Thank you for featuring the honor flight that Harvey Hammerlund and Joe Smrt took. I have been following the whole event thru the website of honor flight. It is a wonderful experience for those who have served in the Armed Forces....Congrats to Harvey and Joe and Thank you for a job well done.

I agree, what sweet pictures. I love this new site. Good job, WKVI.

Thank you, WKVI.com, for the stories on the Honor Flight. The stories were wonderful and the photos really brought the experience to life.

Congratulations on a well-deserved honor, Messrs. Hammerlund and Smrt and thank you for your service in defense of our country.

Note to City Council: The city should tear down the laundromat across from the community center and expand the park. That would be a much better aesthetic use than creating a couple more parking places. More grass and a sitting area would significantly add to the ambience in the summer.

Anonymous said...

I COMPLETELY agree! That abandoned building needs taken down! It's almost embarrassing to have out of town guests come to a new banquet center and have to walk right past that just to come into a wedding or event. It's buildings like that, that give our town the "hillbilly" title outsiders associate us with. Parking right across the street would be the most beneficial replacement for that location.

However, somebody had better do some checking. I recall that about 15 years ago, SMH wanted to build a joint rural health clinic/community center THERE with a lap pool and walking track, instead of the site the CC is on now. (wasn't that supposed to be the post office?) It was nixed because the owner of the laundry got the site declared an architectural landmark. I think it had something to do with the brickwork of the entrance.

Congratulations to the Knox High School Volleyball Team. What a great season!!! Next year should be even better.....keep working hard!

Anonymous said...

There's so much attention paid to whether teachers in Knox get a 2% raise that they're asking for or the 3% raise that they're being offered...and so little attention being paid to our Congressman, Joe Donnelly, who is about to sell us down the path of Marxism advocated by President Obama. Why has Congressman Donnelly not held a Town Hall meeting in the local area? Is he afraid that the people of his District don't want to travel down the road of the former Soviet Union that he and Mr. Obama wish us to travel?

Anonymous said...

Its nice when our elected officials do something right. We like to hear that they are buying the old laundromat for a small financial investment. It is well worth the cost and whatever the cost to tear it down. Finishing it off by expanding that small park to be used by people attending events at the comm. center is the very thing that the CC needs. It will be a very pleasant environment that we can be proud of. Good job.

Please finish TOTO road....We need the road striped..Toto Road can be a dangerous road....this would help keep cars in the correct lane....Hopefully the stimulous money can fully fix and COMPLETE Toto Road!

In regards to the Knox Community School Corp. recieving a grant for the Rosetta Stone program to teach "language minority students" English I am wondering when they will be recieving a grant to teach my English speaking student a foriegn language. After these "language minority students" become bi-lingual, my student will then be at a disadvangage. Does not seem fair if you ask me.

Great job on the HonorFlight story and pictures of Joe Smrt and Harvey Hammerlund!!!! Excellent work!!!! I would love to hear their stories and the experience from their personal point of view.. We can't thank these guys enough!!!!!

Did anyone notice in the dead of night Saturday, our Congressman Joe Donnelly sold us down the river of Socialism with his support of Pelosi's so-called "healthcare" bill. It was nothing more than a government power grab, but then, what could we expect from Donnelly, an ex-Catholic who supports abortion, government control of our lives and more and BIGGER taxes. Did this guy ever work for a living?

Anonymous said...

Correction: Donnelly is pro-life.
Unfortunately he is also pro-socialism with Obamacare. Now we will see if Bayh is a socialist too.

I would Like to comment on the PROTEST against the jail overcrowding, GREAT job this is the first of another to come next month. There was not enough time ti let the media know so next month we will have media that is not scared and do there job. There was all this talk on wkvi about the cops training with there little rubber bullets and hardly any talk on the protest WE have a BIG problem here in this county just look at the weekly arrest there all public intoxication, minor consumption the problem is you give a man a badge and his head grows and he thinks he god the think the badge is a license to screw over any one they want and to treat anyone like a piece of nothing thats below them Did you see ALL there fat selfs playing with there little guns? The problem in this County is the overcrowded jail because of the Big headed cops and the even bigger headed prosecutors we hire in Juliann so she can screw us over and hire Scott Duerring who falsely prosecutes every case just to waste are tax dollars Scott Duerring has taken more cases to trial than any other chief deputy prosecutor in 20 years. This is why we are broke and our Jail is OVERCROWDED. Also we have a one way court house the rule apply to the defendant not prosecutor if the judge says there is a deadline in 10 days or discovery then the defense better have it in Scott Deurring will get to it when he wants he will put it in 80 days later the judge says put in witness list by Friday thats the deadline. The Defense puts in Friday Scott Duerring puts it in Thursday and Kim Hall accepts it that has been a on going problem in the Starke Circuit Court and Scott Duerring does what the hell he wants and so does Juliann and they laugh about it behind kim halls back . We all better watch who we vote in before you get done in.There is a problem here open your eyes HAS any one seen k-9 Carlos? Why was Carlos a young dog and had to be retired?(cover up) Hint Carlos is on prozak/We need to stand up as a community and deal with this entire justice system

You go Ms.Draper GOOD JOB, Next Month will be better, More people, More Media Coverage wsbt tv and a few more.. WE WILL OVERCOME you and MR.Masuka did a terrific job and I LOVE his ideas for next month SEE YOU THERE. WE WILL OVERCOME

Anonymous said...

I am so glad that someone has finally taken a stand thank you Lynda Draper for a job well done. The protest was great and I hope more people get involved because we are a community and need to stand together in order to get things accomplished. Dont ever be afraid to stand up for what you believe in that is the American way!!

Anonymous said...

Correction: If Congressman Joe Donnelly was pro-life, he would NOT have voted for the healthcare bill that provides funding for abortions in our soon-to-be socialized medicine program. Actions speak louder than words and Donnelly's actions tell us he doesn't give a whit about unborn children!

Anonymous said...

I seen the protest satursay and there were more than 15 people thats for sure. The inmates wouldnt be tearing up things if they were takin care of properly. When you have a bunch of angry men getting their rights violated and being treated like an animal they are gonna act like one. YES they are inmates but are innocent until proven guilty everyone seems to forget that starke county jail is a housing facility not a prison!!!

Anonymous said...

Here's an idea 'Protesters'! How about you spend some time preparing an intervention for your drugged up relatives rather than wasting your time making 1st grade caliber signs! What a joke! It's because of the strung out inmates the jail is run down! As for overcrowding, I would rather the 'alleged' criminals be off the streets regardless of the conditions. They are making life unsafe for all of the law abiding citizens without a second thought! Get a grip!!

Anonymous said...

Has anyone thought about WHO put these people in the position they are in? Maybe we should build them a grand hotel to stay in since some of them never want to get out any way. They should have room service, personal physicians, and Insurance to take care of them while they are incarcerated.Let's get real here people they cause their problems if they don't like their living arrangements maybe they (being the ones in jail) should get a job, and stay out of trouble. Why blame the ones who haven't committed a crime. The old saying, commit the crime do the time.

Anonymous said...

Congressman Donnelly isn't a Socialist, he just happens to believe that Government does things better than those greedy corporate executives who run the insurance companies, car companies, banks and brokerage companies. Medicare has been a great success over the last 40 years and Congressman Donnelly understands that that program can work for all of us better than the mish-mash we have now!

Anonymous said...

You are right. Government has a long history of running things better than the private sector. Look at all the people fleeing the Mayo Clinic and lining up to get into the VA hospital. The line might be a little long because of all the illegal aliens waiting to get their services. At least you won't have to stand behind any senior citizens because they won't be on the priority list for medical services. Mr. Donnely loves the nanny state. I have fallen and I can't get up. Help Mr. Donnely. I need a socialist hand.

Anonymous said...

from the person who responded about the protest November 9th. Obviously you live in a glass house and no one you know personally spent time in jail before well you are special I guess. If you do the crime yes you should do the time but the people in the jail arent found guilty yet so already punish them. That isnt right either I would hate for you to be on a jury . They dont need a hotel or anything like that its a very old and disgusting jail period. I personally dont play the blame game and it takes the community to figure things out and stand together. The protest wasnt against our officials it was standing up to our 8th ammendment rights. Its the system that is failing and you're to blind to see that. But the only one I seen remotely concerned is Kim Hall and its a shame. The corruption needs to stop and we arent gonna take it anymore and guess what? Thats our constitutional Right!!

Anonymous said...

Sorry, 'Anonymous' on Joe Donnelly...any time a government wants to TAKE OVER, if is another step closer to living in SOCIALISM. Do you have a clue what SOCIALISM is? And now, the government wants to penalize small businesses that can't afford to offer insurance to workers...and if they can't pay the penalties, they will face jail time...(WHAT???) If this isn't a step toward a SOCIALIZED STATE, then I don't know what is! In a FREE Country, the government doesn't FORCE citizens to do something they can't or don't want to do. It is not a God-given/born right to have health care (although it would be nice for everyone) And, I don't want to have the kind of health care system that Canada or Great Britain has...check it out. The quality of care will go down, you wait and see...not to mention the shortage of health care workers we will see.

Anonymous said...

I am so sick and tired of hearing about the rights of the criminals! What about the rights of the victims and the law-abiding citizens? It is our tax dollars supporting these criminals in jails and prisons throughout the country. I agree it is better to have them in jail than on the streets! If they don't like the conditions, they should stay out of trouble! If they don't like it in our local jail, then why don't they just move out of Starke county? However, I am sure they are probably eating much better in jail (on our tax dollars) than they were when they were on the streets! As far as their protests go, sure they have a right to protest, but we also have a right to ignore them and support our law enforcement for doing their jobs to protect us!

Anonymous said...

It's funny as I read these messages how I can tell within the first sentence if the writer is for the inmates or against them. To make a persuasive argument against the jail one should probably learn to write properly. Maybe if you spent more time getting an education to pass along to your relatives, they wouldn't be stupid enough to commit a crime which lands them in jail. Charles Manson was also innocent until proven guilty, but would it have been a good idea to let him out of jail until his trial? If you spent as much time raising your kids properly as you do complaining about the system you probably wouldn't have anything to worry about!

Anonymous said...

To the person that posted Nov. 12th...I see your point on Charles Manson but have you even looked at what most inmates in the jail are in there for? It surely isnt murder or violent crimes so get a grip..The majority of the inmates are in there for back child support or public intoxications come on really!!!WE all have rights until PROVEN guilty and you wouldn't like it if your rights were violated and why would I move from here last I checked this is America NOT the middle east and I surely pay enough tax dollars to want to know where its going. And I have a very good education and so do my children but I also have a voice too and I have the right to excercise it!!!

So, Congressman Donnelly is upset that the CEO of Anthem makes a lot of money for making Anthem a successful business...and he wants to turn that over to the people that run Medicare and Social Security...two organizations that are BANKRUPT? Only a Socialist like Donnelly would want a successful, profitable business to be taken over by a failed, bankrupt business. Could Mr. Donnelly point out just ONE government enterprise that's run efficiently? JUST ONE?

Anonymous said...

Congressman Donnelly! Your job isn't to guarantee SECURITY...it's to help guarantee OPPORTUNITY! My Father didn't come here from socialist Europe for SECURITY...he came here for OPPORTUNITY! If the Congressman doesn't subscribe to the theory that America is the Land of Opportunity, then maybe he should not be serving in Congress!

For Harold-Thank you for announcing the scores of other games from the area when you are broadcasting a game. I went to Mishawaka and couldn't go to the game but was happy to hear the updates from their regional game throughout the Culver game. WKVI does every thing. Also, the website is great! I love the pictures! We just decided not to renew our newspaper subscription because it is all right here. Thank you for being a supporter of the community in such a meaningful way.

After this past two days I wanted to say "TOM WHERE ARE YOU?" I have not always been a WKVI fan. I started listening one morning. I wake up with the birds at 5 am and start my day by turning on the radio to listen to you Tom in the morning. You tell me everything I need to know. The weather, national news, local news, sports reports, birthdays, obituaries and so much more. I never need to look at my clock in the morning anymore when I get ready for work. Tom you are so consistent with all your reports. When you announce the birthdays I know what time it is. I really appreciate not being read to on the radio either. I feel like you are talking to us and not reading us a story. I just wanted you to know how much you are appreciated every morning. One last note Bring Elizabeth back!! We love her. She does a great job!! Come back Elizabeth!

This is in regard to the Toto road project. Of course traffic count, accident history and common sense would dictate that the road requires center lines be put down. We shall she what happens at the County level regarding that matter but at the State level does anyone else besides me believe that a STOP LIGHT should be installed at US 35 and Toto road?

Anonymous said...

Jail over-crowding is not an isolated issue that plagues only Starke County. The DOC has limited space and is running low on beds for violent offenders. Therefore, more inmates are being detained for longer periods at local jails all across the State. Correctional staff do the best they can to safely manage the facilities and institutions for which they work. Overcrowding is a reality that we are faced to deal with. Society can't "blame" police officers for doing their jobs. The responsibility needs to be placed on the criminal offender who "chose" to break the law. I would also like to applaud our jail staff. Before you decide o persecute them please ask yourself this question: When is the last time you had to suffer from verbal and physical abuse? Have you ever been assaulted by bodily fluids or just as worse, weapons fabricated to inflict harm? The accountability needs to be placed on the criminal who actively commits the crime, not the police officer who arrests him/her, the prosecuter who prosecutes him/her and definately not the jail officer who oversees and protects him/her.

Anonymous said...

I think when they are done making the improvements to the north intersection of SR 8 an SR 35 just move that pain in the rear stoplight to Toto Road and US 35.

Anonymous said...

I'm tired of the attacks on Congressman Donnelly about him being a socialist. What's wrong with his idea of bigger and better government???? private companies got us in the fix we're in didn't they...Donnelly said his job is to make everyone to be secure what's wrong with that?

Anonymous said...

Who qualifies for the property tax breaks?

Anonymous said...

There needs to be some sort of petition or lawsuit for a light at Toto Rd. I hate going south of town because of it. People always pull out in front of me there and if you are going south and someone turns left in front of you, you better go around slow cause someone will pull out in front of you. It's 10 times worse when those semi's park along 35 at the junk yard. I'm not sure how many accidents happen there per year but everytime I go by there there is a close call.

I just want to thank WKVI for the beautiful tribute to Ray and Ernie. I was listening to Louanne today and when she talked about her interview with Aubrey lasting more than an hour, I had to laugh. I still remember the afternoon parties with the interns from OD. I think that she does a lot of thankless jobs for our community's kids and want to thank her for that. I hope when my kids are old enough to be interns she's still at WKVI and they get to work with her. Everyone who I talk to at OD has nothing but wonderful things to say about this girl. So, thank you, Louanne. From one parent who appreciates all that you do for the young people of our area. It takes a village, I truly believe that. And also, not that I don't enjoy Tom in the mornings, I miss her putting it to Harold on Saturdays. The two of them always had me laughing and how Harold would talk about drawing out plays to explain to her what football terms were. So, WKVI, keep Tom's sweet voice through the week, waking us up and put Louanne back with sports where she belongs. Thanks

I have to say that after reading all of these posts, that I have come to the conclusion that whatever it is that Starke County is or isn't doing, seems to be raising a lot of red flags in the minds of the community memebers and as I sit here and think and reflect on all of the comments that I have just read; I have to say that the thing that bothers me the most is that no one seemed to notice the one talking about a fatal and UNREPORTED accident. I don't know about anyone else but even if it is just a rumor it still caused a red flag to go off in my mind......especially because of all of the madness that has been going on lately with the Starke County jail.........

Did you see the TV ads supporting Joe Donnelly for Congress...that are paid by the SEIU (Service Employees International Union)...they are one of the leftist arms of ACORN. Why is ACORN supporting Donnelly...and, more importantly, how much of our TAX dollars are supporting Donnelly through this corrupt organization? To the person who wrote before about Donnelly not being a Socialist, you're right! He's more like a MARXIST!

In light of recently honoring our United States Veterans on Veteran's Day and the stories of our brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country, I strongly abhor any company whose newspaper advertisement strategy includes recognizing a muzlim holiday on the bottom left hand side of their latest sale flyer with prices and offers good Nov 22-25, 2009. Are the folks at Best Buy not aware of what happened in New York on 9-11, what is happening everyday in Iraq and Afghanistan, what happened at Fort Hood TX just a couple of weeks ago and who committed such a terrible crime? The latest Best Buy newspaper ad flyer and muzlim holiday recognition is enough to make me sick of Best Buy. And yes I really know how to spell the "m" word if I wanted to show respect, but I chose to exercise my right to free speech as well.

Anonymous said...

Thank you for pointing out the Best Buy ad. I just looked at mine, and you are right. And the ad has no mention of Thanksgiving. I, for one, am sick and tired of the political correctness crap. It's time for us to stand up for our rights as Christians. No one seems to mind offending us, but heaven forbid we offend the Muslims!

Anonymous said...

I think it is terrible that the IHSAA gets involved in petty things like this. 30 years ago a boy who went to Plymouth High School moved in with his grandmother in Bremen so he could be a starter on the basket ball team and nobody said anything to his family. I know families relocate all the time for academics, why not for the sports program?

wHEN YOU HAVE TWO CHARLIES WORKING ON A DEAL IT CANNOT GO WRONG.. Good Luck American Oak, another feather in Starke Countys hat....

Why is it that many people forget one of the rights that our honored veterans fought for? That would be the freedom of religion. The men wo were responsible for 9/11 were radical Muslims, fanatics. What they did ws an abomination to their God as well as the Christian God. Do not punish all Muslims for this. This attitude merely perpetuates hate and prejudice. Christians have been responsible for many atrocities throughout history. We certainly do not expect to be held accountable for the Spanish Inquisition or the slautering of Native Americans.

Not all Americans are Christians. Many of our founding fathers were not Christians. The country is meant to embrace people of all races and creeds.

For the record, I come from a long line of military service men. My father was in the reserves for over twenty years. My grandfather fought in WWII and was a Methodist minister. My great-grandfather fought in WWI. I honor and respect our veterans and all that they have fought for including the rights of expression and practice of religion. I see no harm in a company honoring the diverse nature of the USA. It is further evidence of our great country's tolerance for the differences of our people.

Anonymous said...

I can agree with the frustrations that christians,or any other people may have with political correctness. Governmental agencies being sued because they display christmas trees and pictures of Santa Claus, or even statuettes of the 10 commandments..

The Muslim religion and culture is peacefully defined and is not hostile. I ask who is the one behind the suing? It is the ACLU(The American Civil Liberties Union) Like them or not? they are the ones pushing the issue and funding the lawsuits. Muslims have extremists but so do Christians. The KKK was founded on christian principles, but do we still associate them as a christian group? or a radical supremist group?

Anonymous said...

That's nice for the town of North Judson to get involved in the expansion of American Oak. It says in the article that this will create 14 new jobs. O.K. so why are there rumors of cutting current employees hours to 30. How can they create new jobs when the current employees are getting there hours cut, or laid-off. without the employees to do the work, then how can the office staff do there job of selling the product. Makes no sense. But that's Starke County for ya!

I just learned about this new website. Congratulations to WKVI. I have friends in Starke County so I check out your news from time to time. I feel the need to respond to those who have commented “let him play.” I don’t know anything about the boy or his family so none of my comments have to do with him. I find fault with the attitude that if rules get in the way of fun then fun should win. What if a player fouls out of a game? Maybe we should give him the microphone at center court and he can explain why he committed some of the fouls. Then the referee can put it to a vote with the fans. If the majority say “let him play” then he gets to keep playing. What if the player becomes academically ineligible? Isn’t that too harsh? He just wants to "play" basketball Why should he have to follow all of the academic rules that apply to the other athletes? Maybe he can write a paper and explain that he failed because his parents didn’t make him study. C’mon, have a heart, he is just a kid so let’s let him play. I don’t know if this player violated the IHSAA rules or not. Truthfully most of us just don’t know. But to take the attitude of “let him play” sends the message to our student athletes that rules should take a back seet to "fun." So lets save our comments until we find out if the eligibility rules were violated or not. Violation=no play. No violation=play. Its just that simple.

I haven't heard of this American Oak.. but from what I'm reading.. it sounds like you're saying they are a mini Wal Mart in the works. "Creating new jobs".. however at the same time.. cutting hours for existing employees. Do these employees currently have benefits as full time employees but will have these cut if their hours are cut and are considered part time? That's the run around these companies are doing. "Offering" jobs MINUS benefits. How is anyone ever going to get off of public assistance? Wal Mart hires people left and right however never gives them benefits and they do that intentionally. Hopefully this company won't cut benefits if they are currently offering them to the employees the currently have working for them
