Maybe the sheriff should look into the suspects that were arrested at Bass Lake for the start of the fire. They had knowledge of how to set incindery deviceses

I thought the people of Chile were above LOOTING but I guess they are no better than the people of Hati. I understand you lost EVERYTHING but EVERYBODY lost everything too

So I live in Hamlet for over 10 year... I wonder what is happening in this town. Unless I attend the town meeting, there is not communication. When I listen to WKVI there is very little about this town.

Can someone in the town figure out a way to communicate to the residents? Maybe a email newsletter or a posting on the town hall door or??

I am so upset with the news of the bass lake shoot out espcecially since I have heard about the bank robberies thery had planned. My cousin in head of new accounts at one of the banks, I have had her on my mind all day.
I always worked with Berlie. He has shocked so many here. He was really a nice, quite guy who talked about his four year old son all the time. The idea of him being apart of being apart of shooting anyone of doing something unjust, blows my mind. He could have been apart of the possible killing of my cousin.
I guess you really don't know people like you think you do!
Thank the Lord that God interveined and protected the officers and put a stop it their plans.

Why can't we have anyone on unemployment Longer than 6 months put in 20 hrs community service per week. With waivers to those whom can prove that they are looking for employment more than 30 hours a week. I am sure there is a large variety of skills out there that are not being used. The workers doing the community service can then use the community as a reference for employment. This would show employers that the people really did want to work but couldnt find employment. I am sure this would have to be taken up at the state level, but think of all the people that could be making their communities better with their work. Maybe community pride would even rise a bit.

As far as those who want a free ride for as long as they can? 20 hrs of work isnt bad for the check they recieve each week. (If you didnt get that check would you do just about any job to feed your family?) This isn't to mention the food and the health insurance their children get from the state.

Money for nothing helps nobody!

the swat team started the fire with their tearcase cannisters and only drogas was in the house at the time. as for burley i have spoken with him and I find it hard to believe that he had any part in this also i saw the pad of paper the supposed plans were written on and I saw nothing about a shootout with police or robbing 3 banks. as for the rest of the allegations time will tell however I would caution everyone to listen to facts and not unsubstantiated rumors. the truth will come out in court when the time comes. right now no one knows for sure what was happening i will wait to see the evidence for myself. perhaps the news media should stop trying to sensationalize this story and also wait for the facts to come out

Alright, so this is the MARCH discussion board correct? I was in Knox this weekend and actually went through downtown and then south down Main St towards Culver Road. Can anyone please explain to me why it is March and we still have CANDY CANES hanging from the light poles? Can we say JUNK HOLE.. that just looks horrible, here it is spring approaching and the Christmas season has left us.. but we have Christmas decorations still "beautifying our town"

Anonymous said...

Thank you to all the people who came to the school board meeting on Monday to show their support for renovations necessary for the pool. The stories were amazing and sincere. Considering that EVERY child in the Knox Schools gets swim lessons every year, the case can be made that the pool is far more than an athletic facility. Whatever the cost, it is worth it. You can't put a price on a child's life.

Anonymous said...

did anyone say what the pool would cost in the tax rate

Anonymous said...

I definatley agree about the candy canes!! Real classy You would think the guy in charge of town maintenance would be responsible enough to take care of that in January. It is his "JOB"

Anonymous said...

Why doesn't anyone state the fact that an innocent dog was killed by police and the swat team at the shoot out at Bass Lake. A poor defenseless dog was burned alive because of the tear gas shot into the home. I agree with the person earlier who said the media is sensationalizing this story. I think things are being blown out of purportion. If this stroy turns out to not be true or happened as police said it did, how many lives are going to be ruined over this.

Anonymous said...

The Mayor is in charge of the overall operation of the city why isn't he doing his job! Get down the candy canes. Thank You

Anonymous said...

Have lived in Knox my whole life, & raise my kids here, as we have great pride in our community. But when I grew up, THE POOL was always open, every week, OPEN SWIM for the community. Now we have to travel to Lifeplex. We'd also like to have a public indoor b-ball court. Why can't we be resourceful enough to WRITE THE GRANTS AND GET OUR OWN COMMUNITY CENTER? That piece of eyecandy uptown WAS A TOTAL WASTE!. It serves the public ZERO(except for a banquet hall, & most still go to the VFW(or such) because the Tea Parlor is too expensive. BUT... we do need MAJOR renovations on our High School Pool. I know many kids that would attend here if better facilities were available. SO WE NEED TO HAVE A "TEA PARTY" TO RETRIEVE SOME OF "OUR" PROPERTY TAX $ TO BETTER OUR OWN COMMUNITY, AND SOMEONE WITH ENOUGH WISDOM TO KNOW HOW TO USE IT, AND NOT FOR A STUPID HIGH PRICED DANCE HALL. But yet..the Powers That Be around here have never cared much for our kids anyway, as long as they're outta sight, outta mind. Knox Lifer

Anonymous said...

Open the Gym and Pool this summer or after school; charge 3 dollars a day; fix the pool and equipment; keep the kids out of trouble. If advertized properly and if promoted properly it should raise quite a bit of money for the school. Get local businesses involved. Bottom line find a productive way to finance and keep good things for Knox schools rather than losing them or raising taxes for them.

Easter candy canes. Any one remember the SNOW. The street depts worked hard and long to keep streets clear. I thank you for that. Now that the weather is breaking they will have time for other things, but since it is so close to Easter lets just call them Easter candy and leave them up alittle longer. Thanks again city workers.

I was across the street when the shootout at Bass Lake happened. The dog was by my house and was not killed to the best of my knowledge. If it was the responsibility lies with the man inside the house that was shooting at the police, and not with the police themselves. People are forgetting that the fire or any of this would have occured if the shooter had come out. Are the police not allowed to defend themselves? I saw with my own eyes the many near misses as bullets were flying towards the police officers. I think they did an outstanding job and it's a miracle that no one was hurt. I also want to commend our fire department for getting here so quickly and getting the fire under control. If the molotav cocktails or the pipe bomb had gone off, innocent lives could have been lost. I'm glad those people are no longer across the street from me. I feel safer with them gone, and I know my daughter is safer with them gone. Don't tell me they weren't planning on killing the police because that is exactly what I watched them try to do

Anonymous said...

To the person who lived across the street from the house at Bass Lake, I don't care what you say, I know for a fact that a dog was burned alive in the house, get your facts straight! As for the person in the house, he is responsible for everything that has happened! I don't believe there was any bank robbery planned. I think this man is telling police anything they want to hear right now to make himself look better. And by the way, my uncle and grandmother live next door to that house! Should they no longer live across the street from you either?

Anonymous said...

Across the street from Bass Lake, only one of the people arrested was shooting at police. Were you at the same scene?

Anonymous said...

I totally agree with the previous writer about the "eye candy". It's out of reach for a large majority of citizens. I wish we could have a YMCA. Pulaski county has one!

jack lynch said...

When were the candy canes made? Who installed them? Who made the brackets to hang them? I remember when the person installed them and the person furnished the trsctor. Just set back and complain and don't ask if any one needs help to make something look better. Which church group do you blong to? When I told the person complaining who was involved, his reply was I wouldn't help him do anything.

Anonymous said...

A companion and friend but a dog is a dog! Human safety is more important than any animals safety! Bottom line No issue!

Jack ..... What????? I couldnt understand your comment.

Anonymous said...

sorry to say the dog of that house was the smartest thing there

Anonymous said...

I agree with anonymous on March 5th. You know if that school bus would have come a little bit earlier what would have happend to the bus driver or the children? Nobody stops to think about other human beings Thats why the world is the way it is.
And somebodies worried about the poor dog. There are to many witnesses for the "story" not to be true. I am just thankful it was taken care of as quickly as it was and glad the people in the area and the swat and police were not harmed.

concerned relative said...

this is to the person who lives across the street at bass lake. There was a dog killed in the house I went in and got her body. There were also 6 dogs there and to my knowledge none of them were at your house since 2 were in a vehicle and i found the other 3 in under a vehicle in the yard. I remember you from that night I was there as well. Unfortunately all I can say for you is that you attempted to make for yourself a little fame and profit off of someone elses misery. Truly a little man in the grand scheme of life. You see as I said I was there and I saw the camera also the photo on wsbt news website can only have come from your direction. I never once saw a wsbt vehicle or any personnell there and I was there for 5 hours. Funny when you spoke to me that day you said you had no camera. "Interesting"
As far as the rest of the comments go I would simply question one decision made by the police. Would it not have been better to attempt to resolve this situation at 11:30 in the morning rather then 3:30 in the afternoon this way there would have been no chance of the school bus being in harms way. However I will not second guess the police they did a magnificant job. Paticularly the sherriffs deputy that got my niece to safety when that animal started shooting. I would also say this noone knows what went on that day except for the people who were directly involved. Not me nor the man with the camera. And know one can know what the truth is except for those who are directly invovled. An animal like drogosz will do or say anything to make himself a better deal. Look at his conduct in the jail up to now. I would caution people to what for the truth to come out in the due process of law. Not the public court of rumors, incorrect reporting and inuendo. the truth will come out and then we will all know.

Anonymous said...

As far as the arrest of the woman beaters, ritenours, report.I am talking to all of those negative on the media and the sheriffs dept.
You people have to realize that they have limited resources due to our commissioners limiting the depts funds, they just got an update for thier radioes. They need more to service the area better so put the blame where the blame should go. as far as the media goes the information i have scene tham is amble enough to get the word to the public and has nothing to do with the actual facts. That is why they have trials. The media probably has several stories from different people concerned and they sort of have to choose the one that they feel is correct just as a jury has to.
The main reason I am even making a comment is that I just saw the story of the 2 that were arrested for attempted manslaughter. As I read the other comments it makes me sick. these people were elected by us as a group can not you find anything better to do to help our community than complain.
Now with that said I believe that the sheriffs dept. should be allowed to obtain any funds for thier equipment that they deem nescessary. i also feel that they should be commended on thier actions right or wrong, They are no fifferent from us, they do put thier pants on the same way as we do.When is the last time youwent to a house full of viscius dogs and guns and just think they have no idea as to what to expect, they put thier lives on the line when it is called for, this is fact. i am 1 person that has scene this first handed. Every one puts down our sheriffs dept., especially sheriff cowen, ronnie lawson just to mention a few, I for 1 am proud of them and very thankful.
A few words to defend the media, if you read the story i am talking about it is pretty cut and simple, if the media wanted to they could of mentioned all the facts that they have on it. they chose not to blow it out of proportion, I will give you an example; did you know thier was an 8 month old baby that was rescued that night, the funny thing they put thier lives on the line to make the arrest, save the baby and after all the mess was over, when ron lawson handed the baby over to the father of shena he asked if he had a car seat in his vehicle, see thats what i am talking about, they went through all this and was still concerned about the babies safety, you people need to rethink your thoughts about all these negative remarks.I bet you always tell your children to think positive or do you.........
as far as the candy canes cry babies out there thet want perfection how many of you out there have taken control to see that your household is in perfect order. Just be thankful for what we have and what has been accomplised since i moved here in 1958

First of all I'm not a man who never claimed to have a camera. I'm a woman who made no secret of the fact that I did have a camera. None of my picture appeared on the news. There was a dog at my house that night. My daughter wanted to bring him in. If there were other dogs in there that got killed, I didn't know about that and I'm sorry for the dogs.

As for whether your Uncle and Grandmother should continue to live across from me, unless they are also planning a shoot out with law enforcement or building a bomb in their kitchen, it makes absolutly no difference to me where they live

after the last 2 jail fires the prisoners were hauled in a knox school bus to other jails. hope the students the next morning didnt find any shivs, blades or drugs in thier seats. or maybe come in contact with infectious fluids. cant say that couldnt happen, they find these items in jails and prisons. next month if there is another fire, leave the area where the fire started locked, till the cause is ratted out. then if you have a need to transport use a dept of corrections bus, not little billy's and little sally's school bus.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I am worried about a poor dog. Being burned alive is a horrible death for animals or humans. Apparenty, the biased media coverage has everyone confused. The media has managed to get several facts in this case wrong. I know people who were present when it all went down. Only one person was shooting. Mike Drogosz!!! Maybe if all of you were in the shoes of the family members of the accused, you would think before you made comments that burn. If it was your son or your daughter, I suspect you would all be singing a different tune. The fact is, just being an outside witness does not mean you know what was going on inside. There is such a thing in this country we live in as being innocent until proven guilty. That does not mean we can all become judge and jury. In time, what really happened will come out and until then, the media should get the correct facts straight. Who has tried to escape several times now-Mike Dragosz, none of the others have tried that were arrested. What happened was tragic-no doubt and could have harmed a lot of people. But lets put the blame where it lies, on the shooter. Comments like those made here that hurt people, praticurly family members, are uncalled for. If they go to court and are found guilty, then make you comments but until then, please respect the fact that these people are someone's family member and those family members are going through hell as well.

Lynda said...

I understand there was only one shooter from inside the house. I also know that the police were approached by someone else carrying a gun. I'm not really concerned about what was going on "inside" exceptt for the fact that it was inside that the bullets were coming from.

I'm sure that this is painful for all the families involved. That doesn't absolve the people who knew what was going on inside the house from wrongdoing. If my man was stockpiling firearms and building a pipe bomb you could be damned sure I would know about it. Everyone in that house had to know what was going on

Anonymous said...

First off god had nothing to do with the outcome of the standoff in Bass Lake. Its funny how when things go well everyone thinks that god had something to do with it. Get a clue people. Second the idiot that blames the police for the dog getting burned in the fire needs to be slapped. The loser that wanted to kill the police officers and rob the banks is at fault not the police.

It may be interesting to read more articles about our school system. Do they have service clubs or groups? It might have the group to furnish the WKVI with a monthly news bulletin. Where does the pep band perform? Maybe there is no longer an FFA group, but maybe a Math club,or a science group. Need more P.R.

You are very passionate about what happened at the lake. However, The guy getting the warrant started shooting. What else is there to know about the story when it comes to the dog that you care about so passionatley (sp)? He is the one that caused the ANIMALS death. Everyone elses involvement will be sorted out later and justice will prevail. Dont try to use the dogs death as a tool against our officers protecting HUMAN lives.

To the person writting about the ritenour case, it is my understanding that only the father and son were arrested. is it not fair to say that the wife had knowledge of all this. Should not she be arrested to for concealing these acts of violence along with the two men. If they did all this to the girl would not they have also been doing this to her and maybe others, that they do not know about? What did they do to the baby? I think that a wifes word cannot go against the husband but how about a mothers word against her son or sons, then their word against the father. My god there is enough going on out there. Who would have ever thought all this bank robbery plots and then this what is next. thankfully we have a knowledgable, interactive sheriff to take control of these types of situations. I do so however wish that they could get a hold of these drug dealers more.Well all you people have a good and safe summer. WKVI nice job reporting. Where were the TV stations at? Everyone should know about this. Well maybe Knox knowa how it feels to not get a true up to date mention..sort of like Hamlet feels. End

Anonymous said...

First of all folks no one is blaming the police for the dogs death! We simply stated the fire was started when the tear gas was shot in the house! Please get a grip people. I meant they kept saying no one was hurt and the dog died! Second of all yes it will come out what really happened and all the attacks on the family members that are defending their relative is purely rude on your parts. I understand that Mike Drogosz is to blame for everything that has happened. I also understand that he is in a lot of trouble and will say anything the police want him to in order to lesson his sentence. No one really knows what happened! The girl who lived at the lake is my niece and I am not ashamed to say that!!!! I know she did nothing wrong as do the rest of my family. So please, keep your snide comments and your name calling to yourselves until there is a trial and these peolpe are proven innocent or in Mike Drogozs case, GUILTY!!!

Anonymous said...

Oh yes, before you attack again, I meant no one in my family blames the police for the dogs death!

The incident at the lake was a real scare for the people around the area where it went down. All the comments about who was at fault please take into cosideration all the families lives that were saved that day. The house could have blown up with all the lethal explosive inside. Onlythe trial will prove the parties that are guilty. For the family members of the arrested, have a little compassion also for those families, what if one was your family member.

Anonymous said...

Aunt or uncle of girl arrested please read your march 3rd comment The first sentence will do. That is the comment I am referring to. If it isnt yours then no big deal. If it is; be more careful what you say. As far as attacking goes you are the attacker here. I am trying to be a voice of common sense and reasoning. Nothing more. I truly hope your relative that is involved had nothing to do with what was going on rather than poor judgement in friends. I hope justice is found for those involved and I commend you for sticking up for a family member in hard times. Hopefully your relative learns something about the trouble that can come from the company you keep. I wish you and if truly innocent her the best of luck and pray things work out for true justice.

If a person has a permit to carry a firearm, they should be allowed to have it in their vehicle no matter where they are in the state. In order to get a permit, you have to undergo a background check.

Just because some nutcase went to his car and got a shotgun and fired it in a public building, doesn't mean he had a permit...I'm not even sure you need a permit for a shotgun in your vehicle! Obviously, saying it is against the law to have it in your car isn't going to change the situation if someone really wants to go and shoot someone that they are unhappy with. If that was the case, there wouldn't be shootings in schools and such.

I have a permit and carry my 45 semi-automatic handgun in my purse...you'd never know I had it if I didn't tell you. It is my right to carry it, and I can do so legally with my lifetime permit. After having meth labs left on my property and seeing how long it takes the police to respond when they are busy, I feel much safer with my gun handy. If you don't know how to handle one properly and are not preparted to shoot someone if needed, then you shouldn't have one on you.

Ed and Nancy blew it. We should be able to carry in almost every business. There are a few exceptions but for the most part, we should be able to enter most places, even our own work places. Being in a retail store, it gives the criminals a reason not to try and rob us.

I would like to address a few of the comments that I have read here today....first the shootout at Bass Lake....the only way that justice will prevail in this instance, is for an unbiased jury to hear the facts of the case, in a court of law, then to deliberate, and then return a verdict....if you good citizens continue to hash this out on this public network, you are dirtying the pool of potential unbiased jurors....next, to the people commenting about the right to have a gun in your glove compartment while at your place of employment...although I agree that EVERYONE has a right to bear arms, I think that this one is just common sense...the gun at work is not needed....there are those that will snap and go postal. If there is a shooter that comes into your place of business and you have a gun in your vehical, and you make it out of the building to get the gun, returning to the scene to shoot someone is not what is meant by self-defense. Once you make it out of the building, you are safe and can walk away, or go get help from the police. In self defense cases, unless your life is in IMMEDIATE danger, you have to walk away. You are safe. If you return to shoot the shooter, you become a murderer. (As in Malious or Fore-thought.)
Next, about those candy canes....get a grip people, they will get taken down when the city workers get a chance to get them down. I don't hear anyone complaining about the neighbor that still has their Christmas lights up. The city workers are people just like you and me, and they have pressures on the job, like you and me. Why not help them out instead of complaining about them. If a few able-body citizens would take one of those candy canes down and drop them off at the Mayors office, I bet the crew would get on the job. See they have bosses that tell them what to do, and what jobs to attend to. Apparently a few of you forgot that.

I enjoy reading all the comments out on the wkvi website. There are a lot of good comments. Also I noticed that bad or nasty comments are removed from the website. Good job. I was taught that if you didn't have anything good to say, say nothing. I hope that with the Primary Election coming up that all who are running run a clean campaign. Everyone has a right to their opinion. Please play fair.

anonymous said...

I must have misread some of the comments because I didn't see anything posted here about anyone leaving their place of employment to go out to their car to get a gun to RETURN to a situation where someone had gone "postal". I know I commented on being able to carry a gun in my vehicle, including leaving it in my car while at work, but that isn't so the gun could be used at work for any purpose. This right is for my own self-protection and the safety of my family members as I travel to where ever I am going. If I can't have it in my car while I travel and have to take it out everytime I go to work, what is the point of having the permit allowing me to carry? What if I have to go to an appointment after work that takes me to an area where I might need it and my schedule doesn't allow me to return home to get it? If a person has a permit to carry, they should be able to have it in their vehicle as needed and/or desired.

Seems like we've got a lot of "Dirty

for 44 years and have never felt threatened. Where in the world are these people traveling with their fammilies that they think they need a gun? If their that scarred maybe they need to stay out of those areas or take their mothers along to protect them.
Hope I don't run into any of these Clint Eastwood wanna bees....they all seem like they have an itchy trigger finger.

Heres a different take on the gun in cars debate. A recent Indianapolis Star story told of man
who suffered a "grazed head wound" after he gave the finger to another
motorist in a road rage incident.
The wounded man said he was driving on a city street when another car, weaving from side to side, pulled behind his car. The man said he put his hand out the window and made the obscene gesture. He then heard a shot and felt blood coming from the side of his head. Police found a bullet hole in the back window.
Police in the story said to avoid trouble you should give angry drivers what they want: the road. Pull over and get out of the way.
I doubt if the gun was in his glove
box, but it did end up in his hand.

anonymous said...

You would be amazed at how many people that you encounter are armed. You would not recognize them as "Dirty Harry's" since that is not what they are. They are responsible citizens that are exercising their rights. My husband's cardiologist carries...ended up in a conversation about it during an appointment one day. I have worked for various employers where I felt the need to carry...a lawyer with disgruntled clients, a mental health facility, a hospital...you never know who is going to walk in that door. If I worked in a bank or a gas station, I would feel a lot more comfortable with a firearm although I realize that many of those places would probably not encourage carrying a firearm. When we moved to this county, we realized that the only other house on our mile of rather deserted road housed a drug dealer. I began recording license plates every time I saw someone there and reporting them to the sheriff's department...then people started backing in. I've had two meth labs (or the remnants thereof) left on my property near the road. One we caught the person dumping...the other I found when watching for newly dumped trash...another issue I deal with constantly. Ever drive through Lake County on your way somehwere or through certain lovely areas of South Bend?? I feel a lot more comfortable with my 45 on the seat or in my purse.

For Marshall County Readers:

"When the Marshall County Council decided to hold the monthly meetings in the morning, they excluded most of working public from attending the meetings. Now that they have decided to not allow questions or comments until AFTER they have voted, they effectively silenced the public and made it impossible to proactively participate in our local government.

Council President Matt Hassel explained the new public comment policy by explaining that the council meetings are business meeting and that there is an agenda to be followed and kept to. This answer demonstrates the self-serving nature of this council. A similar answer was given months ago when he was asked why he voted to have the meetings in the morning. Back then he claimed that it was easier for the council members and department heads to conduct the meetings in the morning as opposed to the evening.

In both cases public participation has been diminished to suit the needs of the council and department heads. THEY ARE ELECTED OFFICIALS. Their jobs are to SERVE THE PUBLIC. The council is clearly not interested in public input, nor is it interested in having the public attend the meetings.

This begs the question: How can the members of the council represent us if they do not want public input and exclude the majority us from attending the meetings?

The honest answer is that they can’t represent us when they so clearly do not want to hear from us…"

This was posted by Ryan Ripley, he is running for County Council in November. Currently, all of Marshall County is represented by Republicans, no Democrats in office. This is what they are doing to public participation, along with their actions being opaque as opposed to transparent. They are pushing through votes that favor friends, as opposed to trying to spend money wisely and working for the people. Let's make sure change comes to Marshall County in November.

Secondly, about the candy canes, I no longer want to hear complaining about jobs not being done anywhere. Schools, the government, etc. The majority of people voted this fool of a governor we have in and he cut property taxes, cut school funding and is dead set on decreasing government. Maybe you are happy now that they are continuing to take away everything essential to making sure counties run and schools operate. Not to mention one of the first things they cut from government spending was adoption assistance, way to leave the poor and defenseless such as children and the poor at the bottom while you build your surplus. Good job, has anyone taken Econ 101 before becoming an elected official? A deficit is good for the economy, might want to check into that.

You have once again provide good coverage of an upcoming event--my favorite is the community dinner sponsored by the town, it is a cause that is near and dear to my heart. 20 years ago I lived in a different city, and I found needed support from a lady from a halfway house who helped me to realize I was not the except when my husband went to jail for making me bleed in my own home. I was so ashamed of myself, but I had a great family that took me back home and loved me when I did not even love myself. I have had a friend murdered by her husband in the past, the home is a blessing to lots of people. Keep up support of this organization, it helps when bad things happen. It happens family members regardless of race, money or location.

Thanks for announcing a new teenage beauty contest, it helps lots of girls, but this year could you also publish the names of those who do not win, if they did not have the courage to try out, there would not be any winners to announce. Years ago the family of the losers could find papers with a list of the losers to keep for the future keepsakes. It is so disappointing to be a proud family member to never find a local paper or any paper with their name listed. Members of media say they were not given the names, why don't you ask for them this year. It teaches good lessons to applaud the losers as well as the winners or is this a new modern idea that only the winners count and not all of the rest. Some old fashioned ideas are a good thing to keep, does only the names of the bad people need to be published. Rearrange the paper to lead with good ideas and those young people who do them in all of our county. There are lots more good teenagers here in our community, so give them equal coverage with those who make us less proud and hurt themselves.

People ought to have compassionate on those who have lost their homes in earthquakes around the world, the next one could happen right here in the United States, and wouldn't some of them loot while the decent ones cry and are too proud to beg. The richer Americans use to use their big cars to go get free government cheese and other free produce. Some of them even hide the money from the sale of real estate so they could live in funded housing for less than a $100 a month, and they watched their names to gossip and report their every misdeed. One old man even stole a neighbor's lawnmower and tried to blame his neighbor for it. There are plenty of unkind and mean Americans of all colors and religions, nobody is perfect. And except for the grace of God there walks us, we forget to pray for those with heartaches until it touches us personally. And then we want to be the first to get help, so pray, it does not cost anything to care about all human beings and pray for them.

Remember the good old days, when nobody had cars to drive to school. There was no need of extra parking lots, kids could not get travel too far on foot to commit a crime and the parents knew where you was most of the time or you got into trouble for causing trouble. So take a radical approach to education, fund it through the 8th grade, then make the parents home school the teenagers, but have required test given at a central location each term, if they did not pass they did not get passed, it would keep lots of teenagers home and busy and recreate a family bonding situation. One school bus use to take all the us kids from a neighborhood, and we got there alive. Individual attention would be given to each teenager, and the high school teachers could only be paid for actual tutoring what a parent did not know and the one and one would be helpful. The more that is given a person the less they appreciate it, and why are teenagers guaranteed a job while their parents are unemployeed, it is the same as a person with a good savings account, big pension and social security check coming in and going back to work to fill up their boring hours. They are taking jobs that others need to survive. I am sure nobody would approve of this radical approach to education. How can a low income or middle class teenager afford the college education any more? An average student might be a better worker than that one that had all the most expensive cars, clothes and freedom that most of us older folks had been taught to work and save for.

At Christmas time my cousin was locked into a large mall, because a woman was shot outside because she refused to let a man take her purse.
She lived, but I wonder if that man had a gun permit and why he had it on him while he was stealing a purse. A gun is a good idea for the person with a temper, a need of money and no morals at all. Lets just arm everybody, then when they shoot somebody important let's just have a hanging while us poor unarmed law abiding Christians picnic and watch. And then we could go back to the 50s when the Klan was alive and well here, we don't need laws we can let mob justice take over. Didn't they kill a lot of woman as witches in Salem based on false words?

Years ago Toto(Rye)had a tavern on every corner, and a murder every weekend until the taverns were closed down. In the good old days of 1935, they were digging up a body because they suspected the person had been given something by another person that had killed them. Were the good old days all good? Gas was cheaper but crime was alive and well too.

Really? I am taken back by those who think taking away guns is a good Idea? You seem to take for granted the military we have. It is the best in the world and I really dont believe that any other country would be able to defeat our millitary. However if for some reason a country or group of countries were to invade the USA would we be like the French and lay down? I surley hope not our guns keep us safe.

If a thug was going to rob a house but his buddy told him he knew the owner had a gun and would use it do you think he would take that risk or go to a house that they knew they had a better chance to succeed?

The thing is that the people that would hurt someone with a gun will get a gun somehow. Those that will use the gun for defense of their families and property, need their guns for that purpose. Dont try and take them away! You cant take away a criminals guns when will everyone understand this? Our police are getting better at what they do all the time but they cannot predict and stop every criminal out there. Some of this responsibility falls on us to make sure we can protect ourselves. This doesnt mean vigilante justice either.

You can take any subject and run all the way right or all the way left, however that is just stupid. The ploitics of this sickens me. Just because some people take the safety they have for granted doesnt mean that those who choose to own a gun and protect their families shouldnt be allowed to. Our criminals dont fear the police as much anymore. Why? because they have rules they have to follow. But enter the wrong mans house at 3 am and he will defend without prejudice! I am a christian and I believe there are alot of bad apples out there. They will be there whether you take away guns or not. Me however, I dont own a gun I wouldnt have it in me to shoot someone. But the last thing I want to see is the guy down the road lose his. That may be what keeps me and my property safe!

anonymous said...

People seem to forget that guns are used for a variety of purposes. Target shooting is a safe, fun way to relax and get rid of stress. Some of us also use guns to feed our families...there are a lot of hunters around here that keep the deer herds in check. I'd hate to think how many more would be hit on the roads without the hunters eliminating some of them. Venison is also a very healthy meat...low in cholesterol and very lean. Guns are also used on pretty much any farm I've ever been to. Sick, injured or elderly livestock are euthenized on farms every day just as many varmin and stray dogs are shot when they get into the farmers' livestock.

Maybe we need a conversation about all the loose dogs in Starke County!! I know we've got several that are buried in the back 40 of our property! I may chase them away once, but if they return repeatedly...they don't go back home.

Actually I did not purpose taking all guns away, hunters and recreational people who use them as they are fine, but why would a person need certain types of rapid firing machine type of guns that the military do need. But a lot of good people do not store their guns safely, the grandfather in Michigan kept a loaded gun where his grandson knew it was and he was killed by it, it was a tragic situation, and lots of children get shot by guns that are not kept locked up. When a person's temper gets out of control, a gun can be used to kill a spouse or a policeman called to help them. The right to bear arms does not mean we need the kind that the military must have or point it at another person even in jest. Guns are like matches that can be misused, and many times the legally acquired guns are stolen and never provide the defense they were purchased for and sometimes a bad person could take a gun and use it on its owner,
common sense says that there are limits on all things, military people and policemen do need their guns and they have died defend our homes.

anonymous said...

We weren't discussing military weapons or assault rifles. We were talking about the right to have a handgun/firearm in your vehicle. And, yes, there are tragic situations involving firearms. But who is to say that that grandson couldn't have taken a knife from the kitchen and commited murder with it? There is more to that story than we've heard at this point. There had to be something going on in that home to cause that boy to take such drastic measures. If he were truly psychotic, wouldn't he have murdered the grandmother too??

I agree that assault weapons should be left to the professionals and those defending our country.

yes i would like to leave a comment for the person who talks about a killing every week in toto ,
my grandfather owned 1 of the establishments you are refering too ,,and there was never a killing or shooting in his bar,he was not closed down ,,nor run out of town ,,he decided to move back to his home state.
as for the right to bare arms ,i personally have a gun permit ,,and own a gun ,,i have both, for my own protection,,the world has become a scarry place to live in with all the drugs and job losses ,i understand the people stealing to feed there families,,and in that case i would give them the food out of my cabinets,,,but as far as a junkie is conserned,,i will protect whats mine..i work hard to survive in this economy and i fill,if i worked for it ,its mine and you will not take it from me,
this is still a free country and i will own my guns ,and i will protect my family,,,you can wait for 911 to come ,and hope your family makes it to the hospital,,but i wonder how many people who have been assaulted in there own homes decided to get a gun after the fact
happy to be a gun owner in america

Anonymous said...

My father who was born in 1905 said that about Toto, and I am sorry but he died in 1990, so I guess we'll have wait to talk to him about it.
He also remembered the KKK being active in the 1950s, and Al Smith not getting elected president because of his faith. Sorry to have offend all of the former Tavern owners, there was also prohibition and my father lived through that too. That did not work either, you can't pass laws and make people be good citizens and respect every persons right to live and breath here in America.

Anonymous said...

I applaud those policemen who did their job and never got killed or killed another human being as they were involved in a situation that could have ended much more tragically. They have families who love them too, and this county does not need more bad headlines but it does sell newspapers.

Anonymous said...

I find the comments about the KKK having been active in the past a bit amusing. We moved here in 1996, and the KKK is still active. They are the reason that the elementary school told me they don't distribute information for non-school-related groups such as 4-H or scouting. If they allow those groups to hand out membership info, the KKK also wants to hand out their information to students at the ELEMENTARY school. Seems like it was around the time we moved here that the klan leader was shot in his own home by his wife. I may have the details wrong, but I do remember a shooting related to a member of the klan occuring and thinking...wow, where did we just move to??

Anonymous said...

When I went to work in South Bend I was amazed at the number of people who said, "I'd never go to Starke County thats a big Klan county." An African American I worfked with said his mother told him, "Never go to that county all they have is beat up pickups with gun racks in the back window. Its KKK land." Sorry but true

Just because there locked up does not mean they need to be starved.
I had a cousin in jail there and he said the food wasnt fit for a rat.

Back again for the brainless. First off putting restrictions on guns just helps the criminal and not the law abiding citizen. Criminals don't care about laws that's why they are criminals. If someone breaks into my home I will do everything in my power to make sure that they don't leave under their own power. If your in my home I take that as a threat against me and my family. I feel that people who break into homes won't stop until they are shown the hard way. For the people who believe that guns are bad and should be taken away I hope someone breaks into your home. When you are helpless and are unable to defend yourself against the loosers in this world you might change your mind. Guns don't kill people. People kill people. Don't take guns away make the punishment more severe for the criminals.

Second who cares if the prisoners don't like the food. It's not a resort or a spa. They are there because they can't follow the rules. They broke the law. Some have broke the law many many times. And you are upset becuase someone cried because they didn't like the food. I know how to fix that DON'T BREAK THE LAW AND YOU WON'T GO TO JAIL! Sounds simple to me. Stop doing drugs, stop breaking into peoples houses and stealing from them, STOP BEING AN IDIOT. Sorry for saying idiot. I know that some people here can't handle such a strong word. But I think that's the problem. Get real people.

North Judson had a beautiful golf course, Chesapeake Run, and now I hear that it's closing it's doors..How sad is that?

Anonymous said...

Oh, dear am I get old or what, I do now recalled the new KKK,perhaps they are the new generation of the old members. I hope I have not offend any local members. I have heard other complain that the prisoners are feed from cheaper place, well don't us lower to middle class people prefer to shop in those place, the provide good meals if you use common sense. A clerk in a Wal Mart said it made her mad to see people purchase food with food stamps who then pulled out $200 cash for beer. I am not saying food stamps or beer is wrong, I am just wondering where the cash came from. I have no objections to people buying beer legally either I just can't afford it or believe it is good for me, but I also buy cheaper hot dogs too, they taste good and are faster to fix. I once saw neighbors letting their child taste beer, my folks did not do that but nobody reported the neighbors for being bad parents either. Common sense goes a long ways with every thing in this world, and each person who does wrong will have an excuse for it--times are hard, I was thirsty I needed the beer. Times are hard I needed a gun to rob a store with a gun that can not be traced. Even todays robbers are risking their life and reputation with cameras to record the pictures and security guards who might be able to do their job. One bank fired a bank teller because he hopped a counter and chased the robber, it was against the Bank's policy. One store I worked in we were told what to do if rob, and my supervisor said she wasn't dying for the money==she would help them to carry it to their car. I made a key for a customer once and he came back and said it did not work, I went to the car with him and it worked. He was drunk with children in the car. At a factory I worked one of the semi drivers was drunk, they let him unload and leave and notified the police after he was on the road. However most of the drivers, customers and beer drinkers are not bad people, but the few bad ones make life rough for all others.

I dont believe the KKK is still prominant in this area. The history of them scares people but I think they arent as strong as they used to be. The public rallys and such have come to a standstill.
I believe people in todays society have found ways to steer away from ignorance. It is better to be above that sort of thing.

Get a grip people...we are not talking about your right to protect your homes, we are talking about your right to have a loaded gun in your glovebox while you are at work. Do you really NEED a loaded gun in your vehical? If you are driving in a bad neighborhood, will you be able to retrieve the gun if someone suddenly appears at the side of the vehical, and they want to take your vehical? I think probably not. Then once your vehical is stolen, the criminal now has yet another loaded gun in their possession. Or what about the citizen that forgets to lock the glovebox or the vehical. Now anyone has access to the weapon. Randomly stolen vehicals will now come with a loaded weapon...lucky criminals, huh? I say keep the guns at home, or get a permit to carry them on your side. I don't want any disgruntled employees going out to their cars to get a loaded weapon, that will be used to go "Postal" on the rest of us hard working citizens.

Anonymous said...

If you don't have a permit to carry, you wouldn't be allowed to carry your gun in your vehicle...in the glove box or not. Mine would never be locked in the glove box...it will be on my person or next to me on the seat as it is now. If I am at work, then it would have to be out of sight, but not necessarily in the glove box. Usually, it is in my purse, but I did have one employer that did not allow any kind of firearms on the premises so it was left in the car when I was employed there.

Seems to me that everyone worries a little to much about the scum in Starke Co Jail. I say feed them Bread and water and cram them in the jail like sardines in a can. Who cares they are murders, child abusers, women beaters, drug dealer and drug users so why is everyone so concerned if they are comfortable in their cells. Maybe if it wasn't so comfortable they would not keep coming back.

Although I do not support the violent actions of the KKK, or any other violent actions of any group, I do observe their rights. Why are all other nationalities allowed to speak out whenever they feel on whatever they wish without any public outcry, and yet if a known member of ANY WHITE group states their belief in a white society, it is observed as "ignorant" or a violation of civil rights. Black groups continually call us rednecks, white trash, and a slew of other RACIALLY motivated insults and nothing is said. Illegal alliens get into the United States and do not pay taxes, but yet recieve government and local funds for assistance. And nothing is said. But yet if a WHITE AMERICAN needs assistance, they are required to jump through hoops to recieve any public assistance, if at all. I wish people would look into the very topic they are commenting on and learn the truth rather than to simply follow the "popular" belief or "politically correct" response. These same people sit in front of the TV in the privacy of their own homes, or with close friends will make comments simular to the beliefs of the very group they are denouncing.

Hey, folks you can have a good meal with a fifty cent package of hot dogs and a can of biscuits at 38 cents to make pigs in the blanket and a can of beans/all under $2, so why can't us white Starke County folks eat good food from our Save A Lot grocery store and even get a two liter of diet pop for 79 cents. If it is could enough for the average person, maybe they could throw in some meat for the less than noble jail population. It must get expensive feeding them three meals a day. Aren't some places charging the jail inmates for their food? If they couldn't afford it at the time, keep a record of what they eat and let them pay later. If they want steak, let them pay for it or create a chain gang to pick up trash around the county, there is lots of good jobs that would tire them bored people out so they do not have the energy to cause trouble at night. Plus it is just plain good exercise walking, and let them wear orange so we will know not hit them with a car or give them a ride to freedom.

If you condone any of their views you condone all of their views. People need to understand that a group such as the KKK has a history of violence. You cant just put that aside and say the organization isnt ignorant. I dont believe that the white population is given the same treatment as any of the Minorities. However siding with the hatred and violent ways of handling the situations is just ignorance. The speaking out is good, the protesting is good, The violence discredits the whole organization.

Actually whoever said a deficit is good is wrong. When government borrows to finance their spending, it crowds out private investment becuase their is less capital for them to lend to private investors. Becuase their is less private investment that will create more public sector job which is impossible to sustain without the private investment so defict spending is bad for a healthy economy.

I miss the coffee shop an read the WKVI WEB. For what it is worth I am no longer on the SCDF board. Been off a couple years now and they offered to double my wages but I still resigned. A little history lesson, 7 of us started the group and I am the last of the original. A friend Ray Stevenson ask what was our reason? Between the highway and roosevelt rd we counted 35 for sale signs in front of homes. 10 or 12% unemployment and total income of residents living in Starke County was 106,000,000...54% of the workers were working out of the county When the unemployment went below 6% a resident said he never thought he would see it go below 10%. In 2008 the total income in Starke was over 300,000,000. We have had many years with 10 million dollar increases. These figures come from the Department of Revenue from Indianapolis and what the total budget of Indiana is made from their income figures When I use to mentioned these figures to Starke county people who would never believe cause they didn't know me and would show the dept of revenues letter head and letter with the years from 1985 to date and phone number to call if they so desired. This was my pleasure working with SCDF. I resigned in 2008. This morning the news from the Whitehouse advised if a company buys equipment up to $250,000 can be depricated totally the first year, 2010. I hope the Regent company with their 35 new employees get in under this. It takes a complete County, schools, churches& another point of intrest, bring in 10 production workers and the monies will turn in your area 5 to 7 times. This is called new dollars.

A beautiful day outside on my way home for lunch and in the parking lot of CVS in Knox I see an older woman with a sign saying “Someone stole my purse out of my truck. Need gas money to get home in Plymouth. Please HELP God Bless “. I had to turn around in the parking lot at Smith’s to go back, pulled in at CVS and got out, asked her if $10 would get her home. Her foot looked like she had shoved a football into a tennis shoe it was so swollen and she proceeded to tell me how she was in the doctor’s office scheduling a surgery for her foot that had torn tendons in it and someone stole her purse out of her truck but left her little dog alone. She thanked me and said God bless you for helping me and told me how embarrassed she was because she felt like she was begging. I am the one that is embarrassed, you come to Starke County for an appointment and get robbed in the parking lot by the hospital and elementary school. Maybe I got duped, but she did limp into her truck and drive over to the gas station as I was leaving. This isn’t new to the area but it has me feeling sick to my stomach.

Isn't strange that bad news gets top billing, when MPI was going up for sale and bankrupt, lots of people got upset. Why did not somebody get upset when the man who brought MPI to Starke County and his top assistant got fired. He knew it was going to happen because the top man who is now gone from the MPI corporation--had closed 3 of the 5 factories in the United States. Now they have two factories in the USA and one in Mexico trying to do the work of what 5 factories once did. In those days Alex and MPI was paying every employee 6 percent into their 401K pension plan whether or not they matched it. A lot of people probably did not appreciate their MPI paychecks. Now they do not get the cost of living raises and the bonuses that Alex gave his good employees and they stopped paying into the 401K too. Once somebody complained about the Starke County Foundation and Alex responsed with a letter that his employees made more than the law said they had to pay them. He said the foundation was what drew him to Starke County. Alex would visit with his employees at holiday dinners, and I am sure it hurt to be fired from a factory he had started here in Starke County.

Give the SCDF board a pat on the back.
For what? Having the second highest county in Indiana on unemployment?

Get real people. Sysco is not coming any more than a new highway.

When Sysco built its last plant in Indiana it was open for six months and then shut down.

Is that what we want six month job?

Why can't we get a real business in here? Could it be because of the reputation that Starke County has? KKK, hoods running the streets, Meth labs.

Keep dreaming people and in those dreams is the only place you will be driving on a new highway to a sysco plant.

I am pleased to read that some person knew how important Alex was to helping Make MPI and Starke County a great place to live. It is great to hear the good things about my brother Mayor Bob. To get things rolling in our county The president of Key Bank and my brother Bob took a short course at Ball State on Econ Developemment. To get water to the MPI site the city had to come up with $22,000 When SCDF met with the Mayor, Bob said he would come up with that amount and not a penny more and the water will be at the site before the plant machinery arived even if we have to do it with pails. MPI was going to buy only 10 acres and when they saw what could get done they bought 25 acres. A private person paid the $10,000 down stroke for the industrisl park land the same day when MPI was looking the ground. There was no magic wane being waved just a few people with an imigation. Starke County is a good place to grow..

Could the reason Starke County has a high unemployment rate be because the people in Starke County DON'T want to work?

There is always someone who thinks they gotta tell everyone the bad news! LOL This person is something else. If you are so down on our county and let the history of it effect you so much then MOVE OUT.

Your statement has no other purpose than to cause trouble. It doesnt promote any new ideas or find a way to help any situation.

Its kinda like getting ticked off cause you won the 200 million dollar lottery and only got paid 20 million. Hey news flash you have $20 million dollars!!!!!

It amazes me how some people work however hard trying to accomplish good things for our community and others try even harder to let everyone know that it isnt enough.

Instead of complaining volunteer to help and do something about it.
Good decent people dont dwell on the negative they try to promote the positive.

I worked for a company that was based out of Porter County. Our computer department included a black lady...company would not allow her to drive to the Knox office without another staff member accompanying her...because she was black and they feared for her safety. That says a lot about what others think of Starke county. I have worked in Porter, Marshall and Starke counties...all three of those jobs included hearing daily comments about Starke County and the residents that live here.

I like the rural setting and wouldn't trade it for the world, but there is a lot of drug dealing and violence that goes on here. There is a reason that the county has the reputation it has. There are good things that happen as well, but people don't seem to hear about those things so much.

Ted has hit a gold mine. Suggestion, interview each of the 27 National Honor new mwmbers. One each week. Picture and ask questions, like where they are going to college. Will they consider coming back to live in Starke county and raise a family here? What they would like to see done to improve their community. What did they enjoyed most in school? Do they use the city park?

Good Job on covering the Honor Society, it would seem that a lot county teenagers in the Knox High School are being productive and getting good grades, and those in the past have also used their skills to make our world a much better place.
Some of our criminal types are imported from other places, there are lots more people with better transportation than in the past. And lots of good people do not want to honored for doing the right thing. I applaud the person who gave the lady gas money, it does no good not to try and help another person in need, everybody needs a hand up sometimes more than a hand out.

I have been a Democrat my whole life until tonight. I am just sick that my party voted for this socialist health bill. I am scared for us all. I will never vote for a Democrat at the national level again. I will be an Independent for life.

"Two of every three practicing physicians oppose the medical overhaul plan under consideration in Washington, and hundreds of thousands would think about shutting down their practices or retiring early if it were adopted, a new IBD/TIPP Poll has found." People who voted for Obama didn't know this is what they would get. Welcome to liberalism. You asked for it, you got it. I hope you don't need sergery or an expieremental drug anytime soon. I hope you don't need a job either because small businesses will not be hiring.

I pity all Democrat candidates this election. It may not be their fault that the health bill passed, but I fear they are going to sufer the conseqences. Congress approvel rating is at a record low and that will probably trickle down to the local level. Republicans won at the local level after Clinton came in and tried to pass health care and gays in the military. That is when Republicans won Starke County races for Sherrif and Clerk. Right or wrong I see that happening again. Shame on Obama and Pelosi.

Thanks for the report about Purdue and Jerry Johnson. He defended one of the top college and NBA players of all time. He did Starke County proud and I never get tired hearing about it. Plus, UCLA was coached by hoosier great Johnny Wooden, another wonderful human being. And now Purdue is at it again. Sweet 16 for a team stacked with Indiana boys. To cap it off, it doesn't get any better than Hoosier Chris Kramer taking it to the hoop and putting it up in the middle of taller mor athletic players for the game winning shot. Congratulations to Jerry and all other Purdue Alumni in Starke County. They will beat Duke. BoilerUp!

A motto to live by is everything in moderation. When the two political parties get in trouble is when they go to the extremes. Bush got both houses of congress and went to far. Americans taught them a lesson by going the opposite direction. So we end up with Obama and he gets both houses of congress and they go to far by spending all of our money and exploding the debt to pay for all of the gov. programs. Come November, the country will swing back big time but this time the Republicans may be in power for the nest 10 years. But it may be to late for our country. If only they would govern from the center. Thats were the majority of Americans want their government.

I can agree with most of your statement. If they could work from the center we would be much happier! I cant say that Obama spent all of our money though I would have to put that on Bush. Obama spent all our grandchildrens money. When they pay China back. Those Government programs may save the economy as well. However I agree 100% They need to work together instead of working for their "Team" or political party. Forget the party and think of the people!

That Jasper County Judge was wise in the sentence of Mark Milo. What good would a jail sentence have been? Mark is a talented man,
serving his county for 300 hours makes sense. Let's now put this to rest and move on, and let Mark move on regaining his reputation and living a productive life.

Earlier this week, a Knox city police officer showed up at my front door to tell me that the pile of used lumber that I have in my backyard needed to be removed from my property due to some ordinance. The lumber is all used wood, that my husband is using to repair our own home which was originally built in 1890. It is stacked neatly, and has been deminishing with each project my husband has been tackling. I find it odd that I am billed monthly for the mandatory recycling fees, but when I try to recycle building materials, I am in violation of some ordinance. Not all of us have the money to buy new lumber when we have repairs around our homes. Recycling building materials is not an unusual practice, and the pile is not unsightly. I guess the city of Knox would prefer our home to continue to fall apart then to have my husband fix what he can using these pre-used boards. Shame on you Knox...

Haven't seen any census forms in my mail here in the heart of the city.

Today's South Bend Tribune, page 1:
Health study reveals apalling facts about Starke County. Out of 92 Indiana counties, we rank second to last in Indiana in "Health Outcomes." Second to last in "Mortality", which is premature death. Eigth from the bottom in "Morbidity." Seventh from last in "Health Behaviors." Fifth from last in "Clinical Care." Third from last in "Social and Economic Factors." But eigthteenth from the top in "Physical Environment," like air quality. Here is another way to put it. Starke county people die earlier than others, are in poor health, our babies have low birth rate, we smoke more than average, were fatter, drink more alcohol, crash our cars more, have more teens get pregnant, are uninsured, go to the hospital more often when we shouldn't, drop out of high school more, don't go to college, are unemployed more than others, many by choice, have more children living in poverty, and we are complain that our jail is crowded and there arent' any jobs here? In other words, we are fat, lazy, smokin, drinkin, car crashin, teen inpregnatin, uneducated people who die before our time. and most of that is an individual choice. I don't blame our government, our health department, our hostpital or our schools. I blame each of us. We cam either bury our heads in our Starke county sand, or we can face facts and do something about it.

It doesn't have to be this way. Our next door neghbor, Marshall county is 8th best in the state for "Health Outcomes." Can't we do better people?

I agree 100%! Some people dont want a hand up they want a hand out. really they want one handful of vicodin and the other hand on a miller lite. The most exercise they get is walking to the mailbox to get there disability check for adhd. I don't have much but I work nite shift in a factory and I have my pride. But I have worked with others that just quit becase it was to hard. I get tired of supporting them with my taxes. Now i am going to pay more so they can get bettr health care then me.

I offer my condolensces to the family that lost their child in the automobile accident in North Judson. As a mother with a teenager driver, I worry everytime my child is out, and I could not imagine receiving a phone call saying your child is gone. For the family of the other two occupants, keep your child close, and seek counseling to help your child through this difficult time, they will need their family and friends close.

Why is Walgreens applying for a liquor license when CVS was denied one when they applied. Could it be favoritisim

Anonymous said...

Applying for a liquor license and being approved are two different things. Is there something that says CVS can't apply again at some point?

Anonymous said...

You mean we are just about last in all those health categories and that story doesn't even make the local news. Thats a crises. There shoud be town hall meetings dealin with this. and Walgreens wants to sell more liquor to us? Thats just what we need. Maybe we can die quicker and take over sole posession of last place in the state.

Though I find WKVI neglects to print some of the comments due to them not coinciding with their opinions, I do find it is the best local news website around. It has far more than the Leader's site(which is lucky to be changed weekly), but it also has alot of great information. Thanks Ted
