I would like to say thank you to the Starke County Commissioners for striping Toto Road. It will really help eliminate those questionable passing areas now that they are double striped. You have probably saved someones life , perhaps a new younger driver's life. Job well done!!!

To the former Republican and others. There are 8 Republican's in the election for Starke Co. plus 4 on the Advisory board. 5 of those 8 are currently NOT elected officials. If you are worried about the status quo and you want to make a difference, then get on the ballot. You can't make people run for office if they don't want to. If you want to see the Republican's win, put your money where you mouth is and make a donation. www.starkegop.com

yes getting rid of crack houses is great but please dont use peoples names, too many crack heads around. you mentioned mr m's name but signed post anonymous.

Does anyone else HATE the traffic lights in Knox, on how they change when there are NO other cars waiting. I thought that's what the indicators in the road are for. And the worst light is the one at Main & Culver Rd. It has no delayed yellow, and the wait is forever. Just hope the powers-that-be can have these adjusted.

Anonymous said...

Maybe the former Republican ran and could not make it out of the last primary?

Anybody know what's going in the brown building across from Save A Lot? I saw they paved the parking lot....

Anonymous said...

The Bass Lake fireworks are on the Sat. of the weekend of July 23-25 weekend of the Summer Splash! Enjoy!

I was wondering why if this illegal slaughter house on hwy 10 is comdemned and closed why to this day they continue to slaughter and fail to follow the laws that us other citizens have to follow. They again have animals in the house which was suppose to be habitabel again. Since when is habital mean we house animals in the house. No persons even live in this house. just my thoughts.

I hope they throw the book at the man who chose to get drunk and get behind the wheel of his truck and kill Tom White. When will people learn?

Anonymous said...

I feel that some people need to practice what they preach.like for instance the two decent people turnig in meth labs, this is a good thing but they need to come clean themselves before acting so innocent.

Anonymous said...

well the way they spelled people "pepole" should tell you something, or dangerous...but they got meth and cook roght, lol *RIGHT* Seriously though;I personnally don't like meth up people and i also don't agree with the tractor toy (john deer) has in ACE HARDWARE it comes with the anhydrous amonia tank...shame on them; and their Santa this year, gggrrrrrrrr

Anonymous said...

They should have placed a picture of the loser, Jack Haut, that has NO respect for the lives of others. This loser has been in trouble everywhere he's lived, with numerous DUI's, only to come to Starke Co. & take away one of the best homegrown fellas around. People actually called 911 on Haut because he was driving so eradically just before the accident. Just a total tragedy due to the irresponsibilty of a total loser.

Anonymous said...

Wow 8 republicans running that makes me want to really donate, the incubments up for re-election are good people and worked hard to get there I am proud of them but I would not give 1 cent to the starke county (gop) grand old pilfer maybe someone should look at there books, should not have to beg people to run in the 11th hour

13, 8 and 9 year old girls win a tournament and go undefeated from 4 months of hard work. Good kids that have done something with their summer and not just hang out up town and in the park. Not one word congratulating them.

Anonymous said...

The good ol boys are hard at work here again. I hope someone challenges Gordons filing because there are rules to follow and that should stand for everyone. Indiana election code 3-13-1-2 says candidates looking to fill a vacant seat must file with the clerk by June 30th at noon and that didn't happen, how can you enforce the law if you can't even follow the rules.

WAY TO GO GOP

Anonymous said...

GOP, DEM, your all the same really.... It isnt the party people (with common sense) should be voting for! Party politics need to go by the wayside the only thing that can fix this mess we have is to vote for the idividual.

I will be so bold Anyone and I mean ANYONE voting straight ballot is as corrupt or ignorant as the politicians that are ruining our country! It is not believeable that if someone actually took the time to find out what each candidate stood for they could honestly vote straight party ticket. Good luck to all voters out there this voting season!

Anonymous said...

Well if there were Tea Party canidates like RON PAUL ( remember the Constitution) I would Vote all them in or Glenn Beck Shawn Hanitty need I go on!!!

I have heard that over and over for years from my husband; YES i do vote a stright democrat ticket and have since i was 18 *GONNA CHANGE THE WORLD* well now; I am 50 and have voted since i became 18 I FINALLY get it; and I will be in the booth alittle longer these years to come, although I am dem; more of a life-style and income that led me DEM but now it's the person running i am looking at and not the dem *VS* gop, it isn't a they have money and i want more thing; I am who I am and I hope to GOD they are too!!!!!!!! LET"S VOTE FOR THE BETTER FOR THE SAKE OF OURSELVES!!!!

I WISH THE CITY WOULD GET RID OF THE ONE WAY ROAD AT THE PARK. IT IS A HASSEL WITH THESE KIDS ON FIELDS THEY PLAY ON. I AM SURE THEY THOUGHT IT WOULD BE SAFER BUT WHEN IT WAS TRAFFIC BOTH WAYS THERE WAS VERY LITTLE PROBLEMS.I ALSO BELIEVE I THINK THERE SHOULD BE SOME LAW OR ORDINANCE THAT PREVENTS KIDS FROM JUMPING OFF OF THE TRAIN BRIDGE OR GETTING IN THE RIVER AT THE PARK. THEY SHOULD MAKE IT SOME VERY LARGE FINE ALONG WITH A LOT OF COMMUNITY SERVICE TO HELP MAKE THESE KIDS THINK TWICE WHEN THEY JUMP OFF OF THIS BRIDGE. IF THERE ALREADY IS A LAW WOULD SOMEONE LET ME KNOW.

Anonymous said...

Hey I have an Idea lets make it a law that every time you leave your house you need to be covered in bubble wrap too!!! OH and maybe we should have to get a permit in order to leave the house as well. So we all can be protected!! You know for the Kids? Get real and have some personal responsibility!

Anonymous said...

back to the park; it was an accident waiting to happen; and now it has; OMG i can not beleive this has happened; those poor little innocent boys; just tell us how your bubble-wrap idea would have saved the 7 year old;
GET REAL <-------GET INVOLVED and for your own sake hug your child today and everyday

Anonymous said...

Bubble wrap No..... personal respnsability YES!! I have a 7 yr old and would NEVER allow him to play in a river especially in a spot like that... with a history like it has!!! I am not too strict on my son but playing in a river??? Really? Dont get involved in new laws! Get involved in making good decisions for your kids! Dont rely on the government to do it! Do it yourself!! I agree hug your kids every chance you get and let them know what love is!!

Anonymous said...

God be with the families that have suffered the tremendous loss of losing a child. and for all other parents out there... use caution around water. accidents happen and it is very tragic, however much can be prevented. i encourage parents to use the buddy system, and to always make sure their child has a life jaket especially when they are near unpredictable water. it takes but a moment for it to be too late...

I agree with anonymous on July 6, 2010 about Jack Haut. This man has been in so much trouble and yet he gets out of everything. If Starke county would have made him serve his full term, (Due 4 years, but suspended 2, 1 year rehab, 1 year prison)on his last conviction instead of slapping him on the wrist and letting him loose in a couple of months. He would not have even been on the streets. Besides drug charges, DUI's, he's a convicted stalker. Loser is a nice name to call this man.

I know that this is probably going to be a controversial subject for some people, but just bear with me. I would just like to know why Indiana hasn't decriminalized marijuana yet? I mean, really. Almost everyone I know smokes weed and I think it's a little ridiculous that people are going to prison just for trying to lose some stress. Marijuana is not physically addictive, and is much safer than both cigarettes and alcohol which are both perfectly legal. There has not been a single case in the entire world of someone dying of a marijuana overdose. My little sister was molested when she was two years old by a very close family friend and he got sentenced to a measly 6 months in jail. 6 MONTHS for destroying not only her life, but also the lives of my other family members that felt like it was their fault. While at the same time there are perfectly good people spending YEARS of their lives in prison just for lighting up. I'm bipolar and used to have a problem managing my anger, but ever since I started using marijuana me along with my friends and family have noticed a DRAMATIC decrease in aggression, and I am no longer experiencing the suicidal thoughts that I used to have to deal with on a daily basis. Millions of dollars of tax payers money goes to the incarceration of non-violent marijuana users every year. You can regulate it, make it unavailable to minors, and tax it. Just stop putting perfectly innocent people in jail so that we have room for the people that actually deserve to be there. For more marijuana fun facts, go to http://www.drugpolicy.org/marijuana/factsmyths/

Jack Haut not only uses drugs, he also sells drugs. I hope this time he goes to jail for a long, long time

well i know the boy who save that 8 year old boy ! i think they should put some thing up too let people know that it is not safe to swim in the yellow river

Anonymous said...

Let me start by saying that my heart goes out to the Kirby family for their lose. My family is truly sorry, and saddened by the whole event. However I do have to correct some of the story posted. An 11 year old boy named Austin actually saved the life of the 7 yr old, and tried to save the life of the 10 yr old, but unfortunately by the time he turned around to go after the older brother he got swept into the rapids, and there was nothing the 11 yr old could do. He tried to search in the water for the boy for 15 mins, but realized that the rapids were to strong when he got closer, and the little boy never resurfaced. Not to put down what Mr. Jenkins did. But he is Actually NOT the one who saved the 7 yr old. The 11yr old did! But once the 11yr old got the little boy to shore Mr. Jenkins did help pull him up, and called 911. For that we are very thankful. But I believe that the credit is going to the wrong person. In all in all a life was saved that day , and we just need to be very thankful, but also very sad for the loss. The 10yr old was also very Brave for trying to save his brother even though he could not swim..That is a very selfless thing he did. That turned into tragedy in the end.. Even though his family is hurting, I hope that they are very proud of him and honored that he loved his brother that much.

Seriously, was this "community center" just about the biggest waste of $ in Starke Co.? The city is having to take loans to continue paying on it, it's too expensive to use for most purposes, and sits there empty most of the time. If we had been ALOT wiser, we would've been more conservative on the structure of the library, and built a wonderful community center with basketball courts, walking track, weight room, etc., and ALSO added a large conference room that would've served the exact purpose of the "community center", and it WOULD have been self supporting. And then...it cost $14 million to refurbish the Middle School & I understand that it did not add 1 single classroom more from what was there previously. It just seems obvious that we need some leadership that could make a buck stretch alot further, with more wisdom on how to invest it towards the community's future.

Anonymous said...

glad your hind sight is so clear, middle school increased several rooms and a 2nd story.

be there when they start planning the new jail/resort, give the advice them, i am sure it will be welcome and needed.

Anonymous said...

Wow, that was such a moving post on July 8th in the evening about the drowning victim. My heart goes out to this family and like you stated, they should be very proud of that little boy for attempting to rescue his younger brother. Nothing is more courageous than what he unfortunately lost his life to.

I do believe the city needs to take action and create some type of barrier for access to the river in that location. Too many accidents have happened right there around the 35 bridge due to the fast current in that area. Yes, parents need to watch their children, however accidents can happen at any given notice. Even some of the stronger swimmers might not survive in that area. I say we not even allow a chance for an accident to happen by placing some type of fencing up to stop any access to the water around the park.

Is that the same Danny Manns in the police blodder that was congratulated for the meth bust earlier this month? You know...the comment on June 30, with the wonderful spelling, in which we questioned if a 1st grader wrote it, and actually, all my kids were better spellers in 1st grade. But ironic that the same person in now in the blodder.

Anonymous said...

I have to sayalso that the community center is underused, overpriced with minimal purpose. Though it looks great, we definitely could've got more bang for our buck. I would love to see our businesses, people & politicians put together a plan & a drive to raise the $ to build something for Knox to be proud of, for all to use. The property caty-corner the comm.center, where Ritters Grocery used to be, would make a great centralized location, with space across the street for parking. It would definitely re-establish some pride in the downtown district & promote business. So make a plan, start filing for grants, have fund raisers & let's shoot for a 5 year goal. And stay away from the big names, YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, etc, because those names just cost big $. With an asserted effort, we might beat Sysco in getting built.

Anonymous said...

Hey...just noticed Grovertown Fruit Farm put up their signs that they have peaches! I'll have to stop in after the swap meet today.

Anonymous said...

I sure am tired of the price fixing for gas in Knox. We are always 5-10 cents higher than Plymouth, South Bend, even Hamlet! Everyone says we should support our local businesses, but I have a problem with that when they are price gouging me!

Anonymous said...

HOW in the world can a total waste such as Jack Haut claim "not-guilty" when it was an open/shut case, and now waste thousands more in taxpayer $ with a long drawn out court case? Things like this make our justice system look ignorant. This trash is now going to cost Indiana tax payers 100's of thousands to imprison, & being that he'll get vehicular manslaughter, will be back out in 15-20 yrs. It should be a QUICK & speedy trial w/ Capital Punishment.

Anonymous said...

Is anyone else's REMC bills getting outrageous? In the last 5 years, since they built that new building on Hwy 30, the bills have steadily increased.

Anonymous said...

yes remc has that $30 fee know and no discount for geothermo. i replace lites and applicances and use less electric but bill is way up, but its going even higher with the carbon tax on energy.

i have been to europe, i didnt like it. dont turn usa into europe

If you are going to rip on someones spelling. Then at least make sure you can do it yourself The word is blogger not blodder. Just an observation. 1st grade huh?

Anonymous said...

Not to rip your spelling, but the news articles listing crimes and arrests is called the police blodder. A blogger is a person communicating on a blog. Not to be offensive, but just to let you know.

Anonymous said...

giving citations for using golf carts on the roads around Bass Lake is a good idea as they present a hazard but you should also watch the STOP signs at 10 and 210 as no one stops for the 2nd Stop sign

Anonymous said...

Does anyone have any information regarding why Hwy 35, north of Knox will be closed at the end of the month?? Not sure if any travelers have taken notice in this.. just would like to know what exactly is being done to the road or area for them to need to close down the road. Thanks guys!

Anonymous said...

bloTTer: a book in which entries are made temporarily pending their transfer to permanent records as in police blotter .....not blodder nor blogger

Anonymous said...

In that case, I believe what you are referring to is known as a police "blotter" NOT "blodder". Not to be offensive either but just to let you know.

there is a local factory, just west of wkvi, that has been taking insurance premiums out of the poeples pay checks then not paying the insurance company, then the employees that thought they had insurance went to doctors as normal, then claims started being rejected, and hospital turning bills over to collections.

anyone know the legal rights the people might have, i believe that the employees are afraid of being fired if they complain, and we all know how easy a job is to get.

Anonymous said...

I think the first step for those employees would be to whip out their insurance cards and start calling to check coverage. If your insurance carrier is stating your plan is no longer valid.. then I would directly inquire with HR. If you have check stubs that indicate you have had money pulled from your gross earnings for this--then maybe contact the Dept of Labor.. dol.gov Hope that Helps!

Anonymous said...

I wish you good luck with the company not paying insurance. I am saddened that anyone could make that decision to just not send in the check! Very pathetic! You would think the company would at least have a meeting to explain what is going on.

Anonymous said...

the insurance problem is that the IRS or state of indiana comes into investigate, then they chain the gate, and problem solved or did it just start another one.

rockwell windows as it use to be known is now owned by an out of town group, that have no local connections and looks like to me cares only about them selves and not the employees, and thinks they are above the law.

the parking lot there use to be full now its down to maybe a dozen people, which is probaly the most knowledgable people left, when these people find new jobs to get insurance, the company is gone.

i would think the prosecuting attorney should look into it on a local level, save the peoples insurance coverage and get re-elected, sounds like a good trade to me. taking the employees money out to the check and then not paying the insurance company, isnt poor management i think its a crime.

Anonymous said...

The intersection at 10 & 210 is very dangerous, for many times who has the right-of-way is in question. It actually needs to be redone into a T with a 3 way stop with turning lanes. Being it's a State Hwy., and if proven to be a hazard, it should be submitted to the State Hwy for revision.

Anonymous said...

I would like to comment on the golf cart issue. I dont agree with not being able to drive them around the lake. If you have a valid drivers licence i think you should be able to drive one around the lake. I see little kids driving them, their parents should be the ones who should get the tickets or citations. I see people in knox driving them are they banned their also? And most golf carts go about 10-15 miles per hour anyway, so the people complaing about having to pass the golf carts probably need to check their speed since the speed limit in most areas is 20-25 miles per hour anyway.

Anonymous said...

The only time 10 and 210 are a problem is if you don't stop for the stop signs and the speed limit around Bass Lake is 35mph

Anonymous said...

Even if the speed limit is 25 mph, only going 15 mph is a big slowdown! IF they made the law that the carts had to pull over for motorized vehicle traffic, and if a non licensed driver was caught driving the cart it would be impounded for a $200 fine. Then yes I agree; you should be able to use the carts

Anonymous said...

Actually......there is already a law that should pertain to golf carts, as is it does for ATV's(4 wheelers, etc.). It states that if you purchase the state permit, you are allowed to drive it on roadways as long as your right-side tires are on the egde or just off the roadway. I had to buy one for my 4 wheelers, so why is this big deal with golf carts something new? The law is already established? And as much as people pay in TAXES, who are we to say they can't legally drive them? I agree they should be licensed drivers, but they only thing I dislike is when they drive in the middle of the road, slowing down traffic. But let them get their permit & let them drive. This IS America, we are SUPPOSED to be free, and The Lord knows we pay enough in taxes, for do you actually know how high taxes are at the lake? And FYI...I'm a lifelong local, not a summer visitor. But fact is, there's already a law pertaining to this, so this whole fuss, dabate has ALL been a waste of time. If I lived at the lake, I'd call in an attorney, though Starke Co. can ill afford to waste anymore tax $(unless I can go to Alaska next time, too).

Anonymous said...

the golf cart situation. this decision to not allow golf carts on the the lake roads is not right i can understand it on the high way side of the lake. i can also understand the problem with the minors driven them , there parents should be arrested for neglect. if the cops out here would do there job, most places at the lake are 15 to 25 mile an hour zones which most regular automobiles that drive in these parts are speeding everytime. the lake is considered a resort area for the most part,ok stop golf carts cause people getting stuck behind them. well i am sick of getting stuck behind joggers , bicyclest, walkers. this should all be stopped as well!!!!!! the PROBLEM really lies in the minors driving the golf carts and the young drivers crusing around at 50 mph . so i say yes keep them off the highway 10 part of the lake , no minors , you should have to have a drivers license and the the cops shUold be out there stopping the regular cars from speeding , and oh ya where in the hell is the basslake neighbor hood patrol, oh ya he drives around thursday mourning at about 9 am . good job. instead of worring about the golf carts , i would be worring about the rising meth labs at bass lake . told straight to myself by an officer that bass lake has had the most meth lab bust in starke county. ya lets worry about golf carts , when we have alot bigger problems ,. SEE YA ON MY GOLF CART , I AM AN ADULT WITH A DRIVERS LICENCE , TICKET ME AND YES YOU WILL FIND ME IN COURT FIGHTING FOR MY CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

First Driving is a privilage not a constitutional right. Our police officers do a fine job. I am sure like everyone else they make errors in judgement but for the most part they do a fine job. Funny (not ha ha funny) how there seems to be more meth labs in the area that you claim is a "resort". Maybe it is the nonlocals at this "resort" organizing it?

Anonymous said...

Hurray no golf carts at Bass Lake finally something was done right as we get invaded by the people from the west they have no respect and think that they own the lake well guess what!! try riding around the lake dodging golf carts and cars with out of state license plates running stop signs not and the cords and hose running across the road lets look at that, on a different note ever been riding a motorcycle then come upon an irigation throwing water all over the road that might need to be next!!

Anonymous said...

Ya know, I'm a local resident, but with what these people pay for property & taxes, I could care less if they drive their golf carts. As mentioned earlier, permits make 4 wheelers legal, so what's the difference? I just feel this is an issue of vindictiveness because most of them are here only for the summer & have $. If their tax $ benefitted the county more, would people be complaing then? But the carts should be classified the same as ATV's, with a permit purchased @ the license branch, a slow moving vehicle sign & a licensed driver. Otherwise, the kids can ride their bicyles. And yes, people drive way too fast around the lake.

Anonymous said...

Permits make 4 wheelers legal beside the road not on it! Where are they going to ride the golf carts? There is no room!

It isnt really their money that is an issue more of the attitude that comes with it!
Just because they spend their money in our county doesnt mean we owe them anything!
If they give a better attitude.... I will give a better opinion! I dont mean to classify all of them but there are quite a few that are not worth dealing with!

Anonymous said...

i have an idea ....WHO CARES ?!?!?!?! if you have a problem with stop signs golf carts hoses and cords DONT GO THERE ! DUH
if you live out there and you have a problem with it then tell your nieghbor instead of being all big n bad and just blogging about it. seriously . and grammar and caps ....ONCE AGAIN WHO CARES ? UNLESS YOURE MY 5TH GRADE ENGLISH TEETCHER AND YU R GONNA GRADE ME SHUT UP STOP WHINNING ! unless its going to cause bodily harm to you or a loved one who cares ? stop signs a problem ? pay attention when you roll through some yourself. unless you do the three one thousand count like the rest of us LOL TARD ! truth be known some of the lake illinois people for the most part are asses then again alot of us around here are too ! do you have to drive a denali to be one ?? they have golf carts we have 4 wheeler so what hell my dad has a golf cart (born n raised here) and no he doesnt live at the lake ....so just turn off the pc close the lap top and do something constructive or just do your thing and ill do mine

Anonymous said...

I really haven't met very many rude Illinois people. They do have different attitudes & lifestyles, but who cares. They pay their taxes, & as long as they use caution, I could care less if they drive golf carts. AND THE 4 WHEELER LAW IS AT LEAST 1 SET OF TIRES OFF THE ROAD. I think this whole stink is from a bunch of vindictive people who don't have as much, so thus...they are coveting...or at least wanting to cause problems for people THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW. I'd say whomever is making the big fuss is making some bad karma for themselves. I say let'em ride the carts, run the cords, etc. & let'em have fun, for that's what life's about. AND HOW ARE THEY INFRINGING ON YOU CRY BABIES ANYWAY? And yes I'm a local.

Anonymous said...

bass lake is a summer resort area, i have lived in knox area all my life, if someone wants to drive a golf cart on a county road around lake and it is done in a safe manner with the right lighting and signage, fine with me.

I am wondering how long it will take the owner/owners of "Marsh Manor" at 304 So Main St. to clean up that burnt out mess. They have not tried to do anything about the eyesore(s) in years! Shame on them for owning 2 properties here in town and letting them both fall into such a state of disrepair!!

Anonymous said...

Holy smokes!!!! If school starts at KMS at 7:35, how early are the busses going to have to start? Not sure how this can be seen as a great solution....

Anonymous said...

If you can do anything about it, I wouldn't recommend going along with starting at 7:35a. OD starts at 7:20a and my kids bus runs past here at 6:30a and it picks up my niece at 6:15a. I don't like this schedule and I know of many others who don't like it but we have no choice.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure Marsh Manor was insured. And whether it was a dumpornot, it's insured for the "rebuilding cost", so they're going to get a whole new house out of it. I recall about 20 yrs ago, having to deliver an appliance to the basement apartment, and there were extension cords & wires run everywhere. It actually looked like a slum pit, and we were shocked that there were not codes to enforce against that(but sure there is now,but whether they were enforced is another question). But many of these slumlords do as little as possible to maintain a rental, & it burning down is only a "blessing"for them, as they could NEVER sell it for what they're going to get.

Anonymous said...

In regards to Marsh Manor. I have heard the city will no longer allow a home like that to be divided into apartments, as it was in the past. I hope this is so. I also hope the owner will do the right thing and if they are in fact going to save the home make it a nice SINGLE family home. It would be great to see a pleasant family, who cares about their neighborhood, move in there!! It would be a just reward for EVERYONE in the neighborhood to see something good come of that home.

Anonymous said...

I see a couple of posts about the schools starting classes a little earlier in the mornings....can someone please fill me in?...I haven't heard anything about this yet.

Anonymous said...

check the school website. It says KMS goes from 7:35-2:38 and only 2 lunch periods, KHS from 8-2:55 and KCES from 7:50-2:50. That just seems REALLY early to me for some reason.

Anonymous said...

How many people are out of a place to live since Marsh Manor burned?

Anonymous said...

Obviously you have not seen "Marsh Manor" in the last couple of years. It has been vacant, unless you consider the raccoons and stray cats that have been living there as tenants! They were temporarily put out but I believe they are back home! The doors on the lower level had been boarded shut and since then several windows have been broken out and not repaired. They have finally been able to get the owner to mow the yard. But little else has been done with the property. Drive by and you will see it is obvious, even with damage from the fire, this is property that has been neglected for some time.

In regards to the golf carts at Bass Lake and in the City of Knox. Why can't people do what we used to do. I lived at the lake my entire life and we rode bikes and walked around the lake until we were old enough to drive, then we drove CARS around the lake which is a lot safer then golf carts in every way. You must have a drivers license and insurance to operate a vehicle. Obviously, you don't need a drivers license or insurance to operate a golf cart, since there are so many kids driving them around the lake. I feel they are a hazard on the road. I almost hit a golf cart from behind one night when I was driving around the lake. The golf cart had no lights or reflectors whatsoever. If I would have hit the golf cart, it would have been my fault since it was struck from behind, even though they are not allowed on the roads. I really feel this matter should be looked into more seriously, before someone gets seriously hurt!!

Wow...look at that...Napannee is purposing to legalize the use of golf carts(as many other towns have), so as to save on emissions, gas & ease for small trips. Yes, there's stipulations as being a licansed driver, slow moving sign, etc., but at least they have the members of their community in mind, instead of listening to a few loud mouths.

So, now we're told the "Marsh Manor" house has been empty for years, with no upkeep, but had insurance...and now burns down. Sounds very fishy!

As to golf carts in the City of Knox or Bass Lake, how about this: no brake lights, no taillights, no turn signals, no headlights, no drivers license required! If you stop or turn in front of my car while I'm passing, what am I suppose to do? What about Seat Belts! The State of Indiana does not allow golf cars on State Highways. What wrong with walking or riding your bike?

Once again the few have caused a stir by complaining about golf cars in a recreational area of all places! If these complainers were serious about safety, they would do better to speak out against all the "mopeds" whizzing around on US Hwy 35 or State Road 8. I've never been passed by a golf car or had to hit the brakes to avoid one on US Hwy 35 in Knox. But not so with mopeds.

Doesn't the name moped imply it shouldn't go any faster than you can pedal? Indiana law is more liberal. It says they can have no more than 2 horsepower, must be less than 50cc and can go no faster than 25mph. Does anyone really think some of these scooters and small motorcycles around Knox with no license plate meet those requirements? Indiana law also says the driver must also have a valid drivers license. Oh, really? How many of these characters are running around on a so called moped because they lost their license?

A person has to wonder why law enforcement would waste time harassing golf car drivers in a low speed recreational area while avoiding unlicensed, unplated mopeds going much faster than 25mph on a busy four lane highway? I'll leave that answer to your imagination.

put some tools in your golf cart and put a flashing lite on it and a slow moving sign, and call it farm equipment.

I always thought any motor driven vehicle need to have a license plate, headlights, tailghts too. There sure were a lot of golf carts buzzing around the lake this past weekend and there was no regard for pedestrians or cars. The stop signs at 10 & 210 are a joke--no one stops--saw quite a few near misses

I have a question for the area and all of the officals, if children are required to were seat belts and be in car seats or booster seats, why in the world are they allow to ride on motorcycles? I see this all the time and it looks very dangerous to me.

Anonymous said...

As far as my knowledge, children are allowed to ride on motorcycles in front of the driver.. helmets of course. I agree, it does look rather dangerous- however I do not believe it is against the law

Anonymous said...

I can understand a small child (under five or six years of age) riding in front of the driver on a motorcycle for a short distance...a ride around the block or something. However, any obstruction in front of the driver is going to restrict their movements and their reaction if something were to run out/pull out in front of them, etc. There is no age restriction for children as passengers on motorcycles, but they are required to wear a helmet. Commons sense would hopefully kick in and the driver would only allow a child old enough to hold on securely to be a passenger and would drive with extra caution...no fast take offs, etc. Motorcycles are not what is dangerous...it's the people who pull out in front of them and don't watch for them, etc. Motorcycle drivers have to be much more aware than anyone driving a passenger vehicle. We have people pull out in front of us all the time and most motorcycle accidents are not caused by the motorcycle.

Then dont take your child on a motorcycle....

People need to quit trying to protect the world!!! Talk to your own family about common sense to avoid a disasterous (sp?) situation. We have enough laws!!!! We dont need reasons for new ones!

If you feel you need to make a difference donate your time to the parks dept or food bank or something.

Why complain about golf carts not having seat belts...look at our school buses. If my child is in my car he has to wear a seatbelt (It is the law) but, yet many children pile onto the school buses and have no seatbelts. Are school buses exempt from the seatbelt law? If so, maybe I will trade my car in for a school bus.

I Really feel bad for the family of Young Mr. Kirby whom lost his life in the yellow river. However, I really dont feel it should be acceptable to have a memorial like that in a public park. If someone wants to dedicate something to the park in his memory then that is a good Idea. As long as it is something that is normally found in a park.

Bad things happen and I really feel bad for anyone who loses any loved one in a tragic accident. But does everyone who visits the park need to experience that feeling when they see the Cross that has been placed there?
Yes I do have a problem seeing them along the road as well. It just isnt the place for that sort of thing. I am not trying to be a jerk or anything and I am truly sincere when I say that I hope god finds a way to let the family of Young MR. Kirby know that he is okay. God bless him and his family.

I would like to know why there was no report about the trial now in process at the courthouse, the Rittenour case, This is an important case, it involves I beleive attempted murder of his spouse and a severe beating and then the abuse, shooting at the young lady. I am just suprised , or is it someone has to die before it is reported.

Let's hope the memorial to the young man who lost his life swimming in the Yellow River lasts longer than the No Swimming signs just put up.

It's all very simple pertaining to golf carts. Licensed driver, required State Permit(same as an ATV), daytime driving only unless lights are installed, & proof on insurance(whether through Auto or Homeowner's), because accidents happen. I'm really shocked this much of a stink has arose of this. You just can't outright BAN all golf carts, but they can't run rampid either. Apply the same laws as ATVs(rightside tires on shoulder of road), & proper authorization. You know...this wouldn't be a problem if all those kids had respect for drivers & didn't drive like they owned the road, so you brought this on yourself.

I noticed that the new ticket booth at the Knox Middle School football field has been vandalized already. (see police reports) Does this construction mean that the softball team will finally get their concession stand with REAL restrooms? Just wondering.....

We are all concerned about the safety of our county and should take the opportunity to hear about change next saturday August 7th at the Starke County library in knox at the town hall meeting.

Someone should be asking why it is going to take 3 months to fix highway 35. That is ridiculous.

And yes, 7:35 is way too early for middle school students to start.

There is a house almost across from the middle school that is divided into apartments, so it still happens.

Lori W. Murphree, Knoxville, Tn.
I'm Tom White's sister. He was killed by a drunken Jack Haut on July 2 on Hwy. 35 less than 1/2 mile from the farm he grew up on. Can you believe they want to slap Jack on the wrist again and plea bargain? This case is so egregious I can't believe anyone had even considered anything less than prosecuting him to the full extent of the law. Jack Haut walked away free from that death scene but my brother's body was so mutilated the funeral director spared us from seeing it. Tom will not get to see his daughter graduate, enjoy a penny a retirement he's worked hard for, be there for his disabled brother as he was so good about in the past. Raise a ruckus, Starke County. This is not justice!!!

I am one of Jack Haut victims. He broke into my home and Starke County sheriff dept. took him home. My windows were boarded up from him breaking them. He keyed my vehicle and broke the window out. Harrassed me at home and work! Thank God that was 9 years ago. Starke County created this monster!!! I hope he rots in HELL!
