Why am I hearing that a group of kids attempted to pass out information booklets about Youth KKK & how to join, in Knox schools? And now, to prevent this, the principal is not allowing ANY information from ANY organization, including girl scouts, youth sports outside of the schools, or anything. 1st of all, this is sick of any parent subjecting their child to the KKK & it's hatred, & then using them to spread info in schools. If an organization is afraid to identify themselves then they're nothing but hateful cowards. But then to now affect every youth organization because of your stupidity is outrageous. I don't believe that the principal is making the correct move by stopping ALL info to insure this hatred from entering. You should bad ONLY organizations that focus on 1 certain race. So please don't allow this sick act affect positive youth organizations. And we would like to know who the parents are that tried to enable their children to pass this hateful flyers out, because we don't need your hate around our kids.

Anonymous said...

As for the information on the KKK I do not want my children subjected to this type of literature, that being said when all is said and done to stop the issuing of this literature they have to stop all literature. Freedom of speech under the 1st amendment doesn't say your speech has to be smart just so long as you are not threatening you can pretty much say what you want. If they allow the other organizations to pass out literature at school then legally you cannot exclude the KKK. As unfortunate as that is I would rather have no literature than the KKK literature. As is with the Westboro Baptist church picketing at funerals of fallen soldiers their speech and demeanor is hateful and is based against homosexuals, but we cannot stop them as long as they are not threatening or breaking any other laws. Personally I believe that each and every community should pass ordinances that forbid picketing within 1000 feet of a funeral. Stupidity is a dangerous thing and it is a sad fact that there are many organizations who will be held back by one, but if that is what the school has to do then that is what they have to do.

My kids have both graduated from Knox and when they were in elementary school, that was the policy. I complained to the school one year because we missed the 4-H enrollment deadline due to not knowing when it was. The extension office informed me that the school would not allow them to distribute information to the students due to the KKK and other groups wanting to distribute info and if one could do it, they all had to be allowed to do it. Most groups post notices in the Market and other local publications about things for the kids to do now. I never knew the school had changed that at any point so why is this new???

It's interesting in that African Americans have the NAACP, which works 100% to promote black issues. Maybe if the Klan took off their hoods, found a justifiable name, and worked in a diplomatic manner, that they'd be recognized as a positive organization working for the betterment of caucasions. But people have no respect for their "secret society" status, & all the hatred and evil acts performed by them over the last 2 centuries. I personally don't think we need the NAACP, KKK, or any racial organization, but instead, just groups that promote The Americans Cause, because hatred & segregation will only hurt us. As the saying goes, Together We Stand, Divided We Fall.

Can anyone tell me if their is a local Starke county corn maze?

Anonymous said...

I would like to know why most of the children in the Knox schools do not recite the Pledge of Alegences out loud when the pledge was recited?

Anonymous said...

To the question about the corn maze, you can check out Yellow River Farms here in Knox

Anonymous said...

Yes, there's a great corn maze(& actually all kinds of fall items, pumpkins, straw maze, giant slide, etc)which is East of Knox on Hwy 8 near the river, of course. It's an annual ritual for us each fall(& spring for their plants). Great people as well.

Here's a thought.

How about basing your vote on the amount of taxes you pay?

Everyone gets one vote, but after that the more you pay in taxes, the more votes you get.

So if you get a refund, you get one vote. You pay, we base your number of votes on what you fork over. And I'm talking income taxes. What do you think?

About the great Pumpkin drop featuring the social event of Tom's fall schedule, why not add excitement to the event. Sweeten up Tom by pouring honey over him and then finish it off with feathers, he would attract a lot of attention even the bees and butterflies would follow him around if it is done on a warm afternoon. People could donate a dollar for the chance to help decorate Tom for Halloween, and then draw out a name for the winner. And of course, Tom in costume could clean up the pumpkin pulp and sell those seeds. It would be a fun well attended end of Halloween in Knox, Indiana. A lot of money could be raised for a good cause in Starke County while giving WKVI a lot free notice. So, Tom, it is up too you.

Anonymous said...

Great job WKVi reporting the good deeds of the English Lake Church youth, it proves that there are lots more good teenagers and adults than the ones that make trouble and complain there is nothing to do. Keep up the good stories!

Anonymous said...

Cant have any fun around here without someone getting sarcastic and taking it too far!

Anonymous said...

That, in essence, would be "buying votes", & that very thought goes against our Constitution & what Pres.Lincoln stated at the Gettysburg Address, as we are all created equal. Yes, the system has many flaws, starting w/ the fact we have only a 2 party system. The Electorate College is flawed as well, as they should just tally the votes, & the most is the winner. We should start with making the candidate qualifications equal nationally, as the differ w/ every state. Candidates should also be held responsible to make every effort at their campaign promises. People need to be more observant, as we should be able to monitor every vote & act by our elected officials. We also need 100% transparency with our budgets. And full-time elected officials should make only the average median income of their constituents. There should be NO Cadillac Health Care, Severence Packages & life-long perks, for this very act makes them unequal to those they represent. Gov't has become Big-Biz, w/ a lifelong meal-ticket, AND IT NEEDS CHANGED.

Hello....Do we have a health nurse or what? Immunizations must be updated yet there is no health nurse available. A fill in but they will not take anyone after 3pm because she is slow.....The physicians offices in the area only have vaccines for medicaid and under insured children. Any one have any ideas???

Anonymous said...

Hey you big KKK pansies!!! Yeah you adult KKK people that want to corrupt our kids. You send your kids to pass out flyers.....Why aren't you knocking on my door passing out flyers while your kids are in school?
SPEAK UP SAY WHO YOU ARE

Anonymous said...

Whomever stated that the news is updated regurly obviously is not keeping tract. These are the same articles that have been here for nearly 3 weeks, and the police reports have not been updated since the 12th of last month. So is this a monthly or bi-monthly news website?

Anonymous said...

Let's take a vote, is the pumpkin drop a Halloween hoax cast upon the faithful WKVI listeners perhaps like the Big Fish story that came on April 1. Sadly it will be over in seconds after all the air time talking about, it needs a Brave Fellow to ride it down to get an eye witness account of the thrill of the descent. Why not pray for Tom Tom the pumpkin killer of 2010, surely he will volunteer if is allowed to wear padding. That would certainly draw a lot interest to celebrate the death of Great Big Pumpkin!
Happy Halloween, Tom, keep dreaming of that Pumpkin!

Is it legal for California Township to withdraw from Starke County? While the streets of Knox are being citizen watched, some one is stealing lots of things in California Twp. Surely Starke County could do without Calif. Twp., oh well, it is probably not legal!

Anonymous said...

Last week the City Council spent a good deal of their meeting discussing "garage sale permits".
Garage Sale Permits? They should be spending more time discussing what to do about the vacant and apparently unliveable properties in Parkview. There are some residents in Parkview who take pride in caring for their homes, let's give them some encouragement.
Has the city thought about purchasing property in Parkview and providing housing for a police officer or two free of charge? Their mere presence would help cut down on the crime. Other cities have done just this and it has paid off.

Anonymous said...

Marshall Co. does NOT even charge for yardsales, so this strategy is just $ hungry. What, is the yardsale increase going to pay for the Commissioners raise? We need a complete overhaul of our local politics, & weed out these thieves looking for a meal ticket, or these families that make it tradition to get as many in politics, making livings on taxpayer $ OUT. These people are leaches, & do not have the people's best interest at the forefront of their priorities.

Anonymous said...

Boy, that sure is a big building that Sysco is putting up. I wonder if they will have an outlet store. That would make Starke County one of the largest employer counties in the state.

Anonymous said...

Laughable!!!! Bridegroom is worried about the payroll funds not being sufficient but yet he approves the 3% raise??? LOL Classic..... Ya Think?

Anonymous said...

LOL, a commissioner doesn't approve employee raises, the council does. Do some research before you start naming people.

in the primary election i tried to vote at new hope church, but i was blocked by several people sticking cards in my face all the way up to the door, so i turned and left and did not vote, if it happens in november, i will get thru them some how and vote for whom ever is running against that person. no need for anyone to post that they cant do that they have to stay back so many feet, well on the sidewalk 15 feet from the door is too close. leave me alone let me vote in peace.

Anonymous said...

for the record the county (which includes the commissioners) does NOT receive any money from yard sales (or anything else) from the city of Knox! the yard sale fee was incurred years ago because of people having yard sales on a daily basis for weeks at a time. I am NOT a city employee, but understand the reason for the yard sale permits. the county does NOT have a yard sale permit fee. so if you have a yard sale OUTSIDE the city limits, you do NOT have a fee.

Meet the candidate???????

I attended the "Meet the Candidate function last night...along with the "Party" faithfull who followed along like the "Groupies" of a rock band.

Does this mean everyone has made up their minds as to who they will vote for?????? Or does this turn-out indicate that the Starke County Voter turn-out for the upcomming election will be 22%?

Once again the apathy shows in this county. I myself was undecided on a few of the races...and left still undecided...and confused by the comments of a couplke of the individuals who are on the ballot and say they are running for the office.....Or are they?

How is it that we call the health dept. and they tell us that because the person who would normally order the flu shots is home on sick leave they didnt order any?

Is this acceptable? Isnt there someone that they could have called in order to get these important and much needed flu shots to the public?

Everyone knew flu season was coming and our health dept. should have done something in order to get these shots here. Now most of the doctors are already out of them!!!

If anyone has an Idea of how to get our children vaccinated for the flu please post it. I thought I heard something on the radio earlier but did not catch it all.

So tomorrow the Great Pumpkin drop's will be announced, and if it is out of town at the Hensler's does that mean that WKVI will charter a bus to take the local residents out there. Why not use the space beside THE WKVI RADIO STATION TO DO the deed on Halloween Sunday so Knox can be famous once again. I am sure that Tom Tom the Pumpkin Killer could pay for the bus to the execution of those large gourds!

This is an off the wall question, How will the Hamlet Sewer Department stop non-payers from using the sewer? Are they going to install sewer shut offs? or are they going to dig up and break connections. Are they going to allow sewage to run in peoples yards just like the sewerage they pour into the ditch?

What's the word on the Honey Bee Killer? I've heard he's running around Starke Co. Keep your eyes open & be careful of strangers until this guy is caught.

Anonymous said...

I don't own a dog, although I generally like them, because I don't have time to clean up after them in the yard. However, some of my neighbors out here in the country think it's okay to let their boxers and chijuajuas run all over the neighborhood, pooping in my yard, knocking over my trash cans, and tearing through my garbage. I am so tired of picking up garbage that has been chewed up by dogs!

Come on, people! Please be a responsible pet owner and find a way to keep your dogs in your own yards!

What's the word on the Honey Bee Killer? I've heard he's running around Starke Co. Keep your eyes open & be careful of strangers until this guy is caught.

Here we go again! The Starke County gossip mill....I went to a school yesterday where I was approached by a educator who asked me the same question.......

It seems that while the "News" is available on the hour..and 99 9/10's of the time ....if from it's reliable source ...will quell most of the rumours that are started by the individuals who go through the "He said, she said syndrome"....

Come on already! Keep informed by reliable sources..not people you talk to.

I look at this thing ...the same way this comming election will be... The people of Starke County will listen to what others say about the candidates...instaed of going to sources for the truth.

People...."Read between the lines" when picking your candidate...too much of the "He daid she said" stuff is floating around the county on some of your elected officials running for re-election and the others "New" to the different offices.

Can someone please tell me why atv's arent or how to fight to get them street legal

Anonymous said...

You go to the License Branch & file for an ATV Road Permit, which you pay $30 for 3 years. If DNR or Police catch you, the ticket is upwards of $125. Once you have the sticker, you're only allowed to ride on the edge of the road(or at least have your right tires off the road). Good luck.

Seeing that headline "Twins get 15 yrs" breaks my heart. I don't know them, but to see 2 kids throw their life away is sad. That's more time than what child molesters & murderers are getting. Don't you think that maybe a few years at a low level prison, then probation w/ full restitution would be better, for with that judgement, they are going to come out hardened criminals, & so scarred from the abuse they'll probably never be a positive part of society. It is just so easy for kids to get a temptation, see the negetive opportunity, then throw their whole life away on a 2 week spree. I remember a few years back, a group of Knox kids, though a bit younger, vandalized & robbed many businesses, yet that turned out to be just a speedbump in their lives. I certainly see similar situations, yet a very large parity in the sentencing. I just hope that with election time upon us that it's not a "tough on crime" statement, because these boys were obviously lost before, but now their gone. Material items can be replaced, & homes repaired, so is that worth 15 yrs? I know far worse repeat-offender criminals get far worse, for even rapists & molesters get less, so what heinous act did these 2 youths do?

Anonymous said...

LOL which story?

I have a Polaris RZR which is a side by side. Pull up a pic so u have some idea of what it is. I was wondering what i would need to be street legal. I have seatbelts. mesh doors. Rear view mirror. headlights, Breaklights. No turn singles. Golf carts dont either and they are everywhere. And i could go 70mph. Anyone with an idea would be greatly welcome. Thanks

Anonymous said...

wow I can't believe that the Bastin boys caught 15 years yet some of them who were involved in the Bass lake shoot out are already out on the streets. These boys didn't try to murder anyone and they were not the only ones involved in these breakins.I guess in Starke County its who you know and how big of a Bull Crapper you are.

Anonymous said...

There is a great deal that the "poor Bastin Boys" did in those homes that was not reported. Just because the media decides to edit for content doesn't mean you should assume they didn't deserve the sentences they got.

Perhaps you should talk to the homeowners about the destruction and loss of precious family items before you jump to conclusions about how mistreated they were. 15 years for seven burglaries does factor in their age.

Anonymous said...

Yes, there were several homes that these kids/men broke into. They totally trashed some of these homes. Maybe if it was your home you might think differently... They really deserve the time they received..

Anonymous said...

Bologna. You're tellin me that what the Bastin boys did was any different than what the Knox football players did? The Knox boys not only stole, but destroyed property as well. The Knox boys got a slap on the wrist(as I am glad, but hoped they learned their lessons), but these Bastin boys do not deserve 15 years. Kids make mistakes, which I can personally attest to, but for the guidance of family, officers(& God of course), I & many young houligans grew up to be self-supporting, tax-paying family oriented citizen. It just really bothers me that child molesters, rapists, manslaughterers...serious felons get far less time. By the time these boys get out, they'll never have the opportunity to put this behind them like similar young folks were able to do. A real success story would've been seeing if these boys could be reformed in a few years instead of locked up with killers for 10 years. I'll be interested to see what the next group of kids in similar circumstances get, because this really surprised me.

Anonymous said...

What do they mean "New Property Tax Assessment"? My local property taxes just went up $25 a month, which actually was done last year, thus leaving my escrow in debt, leaving us to pay an additionel $50 a month. So now, if by chance someone took the pride to fix up their house, the taxes will be raised again? We are far better living in a van down by the river, because if you ever have anything in life, everyone will want a piece of it. It amazes me that Gov't on all levels talks about deficits & shortages, yet they make sure they always get raises & the best benifits. I can see I'm working in the wrong business.

Anonymous said...

Listen up, Tom Tom the Pumpkin killer, this is a message from the Soon-to-be-smashed big pumpkin: If you proceed with this desire to murder me in front of human beings after I spent all of those months growing in the sun, it is just not fair that I die such a death. There must be a law against such a plan, why can't you smash a large watermelon or a crate of eggs or even a nice human volunteer. I must warn you if you proceed with my death, I will put a spell upon you and yours and all those who try to grow one of my special seeds--you and them may expect a year of drought, then a year of floods and then insects will eat all of your gardens! You humans can just starve or eat the insects, forever and forever! I should not have to put up with nasty germ ridden human signing my body before dumping me on a car, There is NO Justice is there? You're a Knoxite who has to travel clear over to Grovertown to just show off and gather a crowd at MY Expense! Surely Judge Hall could issue a stay of execution, since I have had no trial and deserve to die of old age! Sign: The Big Pumpkin

Anonymous said...

So what was Tom Big Announcement on Oct. 11, 2010, or was that just to get a person to listen to Harold Welter advertise his business. How about eliminating all of the sports coverage on WKVI, folks can always buy a paper or listen to the South Bend newspapers to get the scores! The Radio station seems to favor the local teams over others so cover the big leagues too.

Anonymous said...

Political signs ought to be size of the official Garage Sale signs in Knox, Indiana, it would slow down traffic to try and read them.
It gets a bit interesting decorating the roadsides with all sorts of signs each election year!

Anonymous said...

Hey anon, we locals depend on WKVI to furnish us the local sports scores, & even the big game when we are not able to attend. And you can check ESPN or any other station for pro scores which do not carry local scores. We all appreciate the local level coverage & the pro scores as well, and am also hopeful in all the local area businesses being fortunate enough to advertise.

I disagree with Evelyn Skronski, she must of forgot about the Mayors "07" race, voter fraud was commited through absentee voting by mail,by voting out side the city limits, forgery was also commited, there was even votes cast from out of the county.Unless they are doing something different, people will try to commit fraud!

It would be cool to have a couple of small pumpkins drop to lead up to the "STAR" of the show!! Every star has opening acts before they take the stage. It would be cool to have a couple of angles for the cameras!! Maybe even get the kids that did the "Welcome to Knox video" to do a news flash story on it or something?

The pore Bastin Brothers. Why is it always someone elses fault for things people do. This men were adults and when you make bad choices you have to pay for you actions. I am not sayin it is not a sad situation. But there are plenty of people who have it hard that do not pick crime as a profession.

Anonymous said...

I read the story about the Homestead Tax Credit and I have a question. With respect to the auditor, I don't see where the new state law requires me to show my Social Security Card and Drivers License for you to examine and verify. It just says I have to provide the last five digits of each number on the pink sheet. In a time of rampant identity theft, I don't show my documents to anyone unless I absolutely have to.
In short, I don't think that's what the new law actually requires, does it?

Nice article on the beauty contest but it would have been nice to print the names of the girls not winning as there could be no winners without losers. Those who had the courage to enter should be recognized by the media who all seems to just concentrate only on the winning girls. It sends a message that only those winning count and it is not fair to all of those entering.

Anonymous said...

beauty queen-
maybe we should post every basketball player and volleyball players name that play in a game, even the ones that don't score, or all the names of every kid that participates in spell bowl.

Don't criticize the people that put on the event or the ones writing the article, this is a normal thing to list the top winners.

Anonymous said...

I thought that was little bit ridiculous myself when I heard I have to show my social security card to the auditors office. When you call on the phone to anyplace needing verification it is just the last 4 numbers so she should accept us telling her or putting that on paper. I myself dont even carry my card and have it stored away so that identity thief may not happen. I think you are right as I looked at the new law I did not see where it stated you have to show your SS card. So why does she think she needs this on file ???

Anonymous said...

I'm calling down to Indy to find out if, indeed, that we have to show our Soc.Sec Cards, as I don't believe it's legal to ask that. I also still don't agree with the Solid Waste billing everyone in the county $28 for a service that we don't even use. I pay for trash pick-up, & pay for my tires to be disposed of when new ones are purchased, along with oil as well. So this is just another unneccesary Gov't Office billing people that don't even use or need the office. I'm also still unhappy with our County Property Tax going up 2% a year ago without any notice. That's Taxation without Representation.

About the Beauty contest vs the sports teams. The sports teams all get their pictures taken together and published in newspapers, so it is well known who is on the teams regardless of wheither or not they get mentioned in the weekly paper. This is fine, they are doing something that keeps them out of trouble and provides enjoyment for them and their community. In the old days, the Hit Parades of the local paper carried a group picture of young ladies in beauty contests. Of course, not all can win, but is Winning the Only reason for entering, doesn't learning confidence and showing their talents just as important to young ladies of 2010 as it was 1970. Or do the newspaper wish only to shorten their space and coverage! Shouldn't our young ladies of this era have mothers and grandmas who might want to cut out their picture to save as good memories? The families of sports teams certainly can cut out pictures to be saved for good family memories.

As for the problems of today teenagers, are they so much different than of years ago in the 1950s or 1960s. Sometimes we want to label all teenagers for the bad choices of a few united in crime, and most likely those would not have done the crimes without the backing of the group. Years ago one young man was caught stealing watermelons, and those who were with him surrendered. Who were they? They were Knox's Football team. Did they go to jail? No, because the farmer knew the first teenager caught's father, so he called his mother. She came out and told off all the teenagers involved, and she paid for the melons they got. Years later she said she grounded her son and he never got into trouble again. Today the farmer would be arrested for using a shotgun to guard his property. And they had plan on sharing their 18 melons with their coaches, so wasn't the adult coaches just as bad. But none got a jail sentence out of their little moment of crime, but they learned a valuable lesson too. Two of them even paid her back for their melons, so Crime is Nothing new, but if you've got the time and money to steal, could they not have used it to help their community in some way. Good teenagers sometimes make mistakes, just like their adult parents and everybody else does, it is a problem when the mistake is repeated over and over.

I get so sick and tired of all of the political candidates spending all of this unnecessary money on this election. It would be so nice if one of them had an event to support a food pantry, had a cancer fundraiser, or even a domestic violence fundraiser instead of thousands of dollars in advertising. I see post many times about the "problems" concerning the county's "youth" and the trouble that they are causing in the area. However, I never see anyone giving any reasonable ideas how to resolve the issue. Most seem to think simply arresting them, or getting law enforcement involved is the answer. History has proven that legal intervention has done very little to curb the actions of minors, as well as young adults (15-18). However, in communities that provide and/or allow activities for kids have much fewer issues. We all have heard of, or seen first hand, that a great deal of out local tax dollars are being spent on projects/products that are not in the best interest of the general community. If we use these same wasted dollars, and/or allow buisness permits for activity centers of some type to open in the area we too will see a great change. We need to provide places that our children can go to for enjoyment. We all were kids, and can remember how stressfull life at that age was and how bored we were and looking for something to do. If we do not provide/allow safe and secure activities where our children can go and relax, be with friends, and generally "unwind", we will continue to see them seek other methods of enjoyment. The drug problem in this county has grown every year. The ammount of crime committed by young adults has grown every year. But still we do nothing. How many more kids need to get hooked on drugs, alcohol, die in car accidents or from overdose. Or be arrested for being involved in stupid petty crimes before we actually realize that WE, the adults, have the means and resorces to make a change. When will the city and county "powers that be" have the guts to stand up for our kids and actually fight FOR them.

Tom, stop complaining on the radio about fog delayed school closing calls, did you not research your job before taking it. You want calls and all of those calling to see if school is in session is important, Lots of kids probably pray for a completely fogged out day, just wait until it SNOWS to complain about the calls, at least your phone will ring often....ha ha
maybe you could have a fundraiser to buy all of those caller radios that will pick up your WKVI station. THEY WILL BLESS YOU FOREVER!

Dear Anonymous (if that is your real name),

I'm just glad Saturday October 16th wasn't a school day. Did you SEE all that fog out there?

Anyway, the thing is: I am not a robot. I don't play a character on the radio. It's the real me.

So when I'm frustrated, excited, upset, happy, etc... it will come across on the radio.

Yes, I've been told numerous times to wait until it snows for the real calls to come in, and I realize that I'll never change anyones mind on this topic.

Consider this:

How are the people who are SUPPOSED to get through on the phones do so, but they can't because our entire listening area is calling and asking if there are delays?

Wouldn't it be easier to just listen?

FYI we are also on Mediacom cable TV channel 16.

Just sayin....

Anonymous said...

Candidates do something for the community? That's good. Unless it's a fish fry or pancake breakfast, most of them hide at home or the nearest bar. Wish more of them would take an active part in activites besides pushing themselves.

Anonymous said...

Hey Tom...we live in a rural community. Not everyone has cable or internet access to check out the school delays and the South Bend channels sometimes don't post the Knox school closings/delays until after the bus is supposed to have already picked up our kids. I know my older sister who puts her grandkids on the bus has neither of these options available so sometimes calling is her best option. Also, fog is not always evident to some of us living in the country. We have many trees around our home and my kids had multiple fog delays over the years when we saw no fog whatsoever until we got out to the road to put them on the bus.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Tom Berg. Are you people paying for Tom to answer a telephone and answer your questions about delays at some place that interests you? I think that WKVI should charge $1 per call, and all these nairdowells would sit still until they heard the info on the radio or they would have to get that service from their school or employer. I think that the technology exists for the school or business to put it on the internet or even send out a mass e-mail or text message. Quit bugging Tom. He's wrong about a lot of things but he's right about this.

Tom Berg said...

He's wrong about a lot of things but he's right about this.

Uhhh...thanks, I think.

:-)

Anonymous said...

Sorry, Tom, to complain about your complaining, it was a mistake. So would they let you keep the $1 per call, it might not be even taxed. Just relax on fog delayed days, and just get busy and forget to answer the phone, then they will call the old radio number and bug other employees.

I got stopped in north judson today by a bunch of bikes coming from the road by the nickel and getting on highway 10 headed west. I think it is nonsesne that they just kept blowing through the intersection where there is and always has been a stop!!! traffic laws are meant to be followed, and just because you have a group of people together riding doesnt give you the right to delay everyone elses plans! If there was a cop there and he/she was directing traffic that is different.

If i was in front of the line at the stop I would have went when it was my turn. If I made one of these people hurt their bikes then tough. YOU DONT OWN THE ROAD!!! I shouldnt be delayed 5-10 min for these bikes to break the law!

Anonymous said...

Just post it online & mention it on the radio broadcast, and that should suffice. Though, as easy as it is to change the message on the answering machine, you could just put the delay/cancellation on the message in a brief manner, thus you wouldn't have to answer the phone. But I'm discouraged about the fact of how the schools changed the start time to accomodate the bus travel times to sporting events after school. That's a huge sacfifice for all, for the travels of a few. For what reason should my kids have to board the bus at 6:15am when we live 4 miles from school? That's TOTALLY REDICULOUS. That translates to my gradeschooler being on the bus for 1 1/2 hrs. I can't believe our school board approved this. This chaos & disrespect IS being reported to the State Officials in Indy.

Anonymous said...

in regards to the delays/cancellations at the school- I do kow you can call the Knox schools & they have a message that tells if there are any delays or cancellations

Anonymous said...

To the person complaining about the bikes (I guess you mean motorcycles), whaaa. If you had to wait 5 to 10 minutes, there had to had been at least 100 to 200 bikes. That's a lot of bikes. They could have been on a fund raiser ride for some poor kid who's sick or something to have that many. Probably cost them $10 a person. When was the last time you gave $10 to a person who was in need? You must be one of those stupid candidates who don't really care about other people. It's common politeness to let a large group of Motorcycles stick together since most of the people behind the leader don't know where they are going. Take a little time and be polite for once.

Anonymous said...

Now Tom wants us to spell the first and last name of the person on birthday notices. So many WKVI rules to remember. Can you say high maintenance?

Tom Berg said...

You should hear some of the phone messages I check in the morning, the names are garbled, or they hit a cell outage, and I miss part of the name.

You DO want me to get it right, don't you?

I could just refund your money if I get it wrong...oh wait, that's right, it's FREE. ;-)

Of course we could use my suggestion of calling in the birthdays yourself.

I always thought that would be better because it puts a personal touch on the birthday greeting.

I'm sure someone will tell me I'm wrong though...

Anonymous said...

Ok, Tom, now you're understanding...The only thing people do around here is complain. It doesn't matter what you do or what you don't do, people have to complain. So, keep doing what you have been, let them whine. "You can't please everyone so you gotta please yourself!" (Hey, can you play that song?) Have a great day!

Anonymous said...

No it wasnt 100-200 bikes it was one at a time for about 20-30 bikes with gaps in between them . I could understand the person in the front of my line not going as the bikes were keeping speed as they approached the intersection.

I have and would stop for any fundraiser ride. But those are kept on highway routes They normally stay close to each other and stay away from side roads. Most of the time everyone knows about them too!

To understand you correctly... The next time I roll trhough a stop sign and get a ticket then I should tell the officer that I was donating $10 to breast cancer awareness or to little timmy's hospital bill and I will get off without the ticket? Gee thanks for the tip.

I am in no way belittling the causes that people ride for. I think it is wonderful that these kind of fundraisers go on. I highly doubt these bikers were on a fundraiser ride though! What I am saying is that these 30 or so bikes broke the law!

I have donated countless hours to My community which is probably worth much more than the $ you dish out on the fundraiser rides!

I do agree on one point that the candidates running for office around here are a bit off of what they should be focusing on!

You can assume they were on a ride but being as I saw the bikes I doubt it!

I challenge ANYONE & EVERYONE who comes on this site to contribute something POSITIVE, either with ingenuity, or complimentary or resourcefulness towards something to contribute that our community needs, or something that someone is doing great that's going un-noticed. Mention things that our community needs to better our lives(like a REAL community center), or voluntary drug rehab programs for our troubled youth, or a Big Brother/Big Sister program for kids from broken homes or no siblings, just anything positive. Churches could even mention special services or projects & possibly garner more public support. I'm certain that if we can become more united, find the positives in each other, that great things can be done that otherwise didn't seem realistic.

Great Story, Tom, on the Skill Center's free check of cars for a food donation. I have gone to most of these, and I have to tell you the students and the instructors do go over your car so if something needs fixing they can tell you about it. They even check the spare tire. However not enough people show up for this great service, I recommend that every person who is not skilled at car maintainous go and see what good young students are doing to improve all of our lives in this community. It cost nothing but a can of food to be donated. You even get a goody bag when the inspection is done. It is a positive thing for all of us to be proud of and I am thankful for the publicity that WKVI is giving this cause. Let's all keep those young people busy on Wednesday.

Anonymous said...

Here is a positive for you...if you live 4 miles from school and don't want your child on the bus for 1 1/2 hours in the morning, why don't you drive them to school? You'll have extra family time together in the morning because you can leave the house 15 minutes before school starts.

I agree with the person who challenged the community to come up with something positive to say on this discussion board. There are lots of positive things happening in our community, however everyone seems to focus on the negative.

Pertaining to the shooting range, why doesn't Starke Co. FOP have their own range? My grandfather was a retired Marshall Co. Officer, & they have a beautiful FOP grounds in the country near Argos that has a pavilion, pond & shooting range. It's great for training, meeting & get-togethers, with a shooting range. Would be great if the county could alot a few acres to establish something like this for our officers. The dirt from the pond makes a great back-drop for the range, & could be done with county equipment to save $. Then eventually the pqavilion could be built. It's actually very nice & would suggest they check out the FOP grounds in Argos to get an idea.

Glad to see improvements to our high school, but, if by chance that grants could be obtained, it would be an incredible blessing if our pool could be modernized, such as expanding to include a dive area that'd be deep enough to bring back the 3M board. If we could extend the South Wall to accomodate this expansion, & also include a walking track around the upper area, starting from where the spectators watch, we could possibly incorporate this into becoming the Community Rec. Center that so many residents desperately desire, and also update our pool so that our dive program could equal State Competition level. Just saying, that if we include the "public service aspect" to the plans, that many more grants woulds be obtainable. I really feel that we've thought outside & beyong "the box" in constructing the new Jr.High, & the Public Library, so why can't we do this with the High School, with many other improvements & upgrades included other than just plumbing, for I don't believe any real additions have been made since the original construction in the late 1970's. We could also use more classrooms, and why not a high-tech college prep(engineering dept, advanced computer dept, business dept, etc.) area to would be state-of-the art, with Knox taking the lead with ingenuity far beyond what any of the neighboring schools have imagined. I just see Knox trying to "keep up" w/ the Jones, but why can't we, with the void of a Comm.Rec.Cen., incorportate ideas, have our future engineers in school research & submit designs, apply for the grants & set monetary goals into bringing something to Knox that'll set a new bar beyond any expectations. I applaud the school board for their goals & victories, as presently any step ahead is an accomplishment in these times, but why can't we really set our sights on some thing GREAT...BECAUSE OUR GOALS ARE ONLY LIMITED TO WHAT WE SET FOR OURSELVES. No worthy goal is without challenge, but why can't we totally reform our High School into a new model of what it takes to send top-tier students(that's ALL of them) into our society to hit the ground running. I just believe the old stereo-type of kids completing highschool is outdated, under-qualified & wasting the full potential of what our kids could accomplish given a more fulfilling curriculum. So seriously, plants seeds, research, start applying for grants, teach our kids CAD that they may very well design the new additions to Knox that can & will vastly improve Knox schools into the forefront of education. I ask...WHY NOT?

What an uplifting story about Sgt. Hewitt. I have tears of joy for his family. I can't imagine the pain of not knowing where he was for that length of time.
Don't have an idea about how we can honor him but think we should involve the students in our schools.
They need to hear the story about this young man who gave his life for his country.
God bless you Mrs. Hewitt, your boy is finally coming home.

I look at that picture of the boy found in Viet Nam. He looks so young. His whole life is before him.

Contact the veteran's organizations in our county,

My mother, had my two brothers in WW II, and told about worrying every day. I can't image what that
mother went through for forty-four years,
Thanks for the story.

Ted,

The fifth graders at Knox Community Elementary School will be holding their annual Veteran's Day program on Nov. 11, at 6:30 p.m. Perhaps a phone call to the Principal could result in a program addition for this Starke County graduate, a short reading of his life, a moment of silence, etc. could be added to the program by someone, like yourself. I know the school is a Knox school and Sgt. Hewitt was O-D, but still, Starke County is Starke County.

If Starke County passes an ordinance or ban on open burning, then they should provide a remedy such as leaf pick services.

Please Starke County big wigs get in touch with the residents.

What a great inspirational story about the two men receiving their awards. Another local business man also deserves such an award, and he was Alex who born oversea, educationed in Chicago and opened his factory in Starke County. While MPI still exists, it was Alex who came to our county and established a very respectable factory that has helped hundreds of local people. Regardless of his being removed from MPI, Alex still deserves a lot respect--better late than never. He and the Starke County Developement Foundation created a lot of good will in his 20 years working here.
Alex was never too stick up to talk to his employees and share holiday meals with them, I know because I enjoyed sharing his company while I worked for him. He believed in giving everybody a fair chance and now everybody understands what they lost when he lost his job there. Pray for him and all of those who have worked for him both now and in the past.

I would hope the school has one this spring before school lets out for the summer. The only thing I thought was a dissapointment was the pizza. The pizza last year was great why did they switch it? But I think the school did another great job with carnival night. I wanted to say that the present operators of the Bass Lake Beach have really done a fine job. We enjoy the food court(food on 1 side & ice cream on the other), the free Wednesdays, the kind demeanor by the staff, and how well it's upkept. I really don't see the big deal of people camping on the beach side when the campground is full, for that only means more people visiting Starke Co. I could see possible liability/safety issues, but people walk on the beach at all hours, even when there's only camping being done on the camp-side(South side). I'm just glad someone has the initiative to keep it open for everyone to enjoy.

This special group of girls continues their quest for a trip to Muncie and the State Finals with a 10am start against #3Yorktown.

Hopefully, there will be a huge caravan to Plymouth High School Saturday, especially with US 35 open just in time for the trip!!!

As a parent of 2 young boys we need to fix our probation department. Mom awarded custody after spending time in jail for having 2 dirty drops. Both have been in trouble and both have been treated total opposite. One-3 times to Muncie for shooting at a fish and drinking at the point. The other-theft, assault, multiple crimes and still walks the street. As a father my hands are tied. I NEED HELP!!!

With all the hype surrounding the up-coming county election, our city police force has been totally forgotten. Yes, we have a city police department, however you would never know this if you needed help. Twice this week my grown daughter (living in the downtown Knox area) summonded the city police. First when her boyfriend's car was broken into and then in a second incident, a drunk man hanging outside of O's Tap, attempted to start a fight with her boyfriend. The city police never even bothered to show up. Later after calling the cops a second time, my daughter finds out the cop went to O's Tap, but never bothered to follow up or take a statement from either her or her boyfriend. I think it is time the community starts looking at the City Police to make sure they are doing the jobs they are paid to do. With all the thefts going on in the downtown area, why hasn't the force done something to catch these thieves? And why can't they be bothered to follow up when someone takes the time to ask for their help?

What a wonderful idea to ban liquor sales in Starke County, or maybe just tax it 100 per cent to cover all the damage the legal liquor does to those who do not drink. Soon they will be able to buy a bottle after church and drink on the way home, let's pray nobody interfers with their right to drink and drive. It does create a lot of jobs, but we all got the right to choise to make poor decisions in this country. I would bet nobody running for an office in the coming election would support a ban or a new tax.
It supports lots of businesses.

Congradulations on a good cause for the smashing those pumpkins, if their death can prevent human suffering and supply food to our local citizens, then it is worth it! Signed: Former protestor of the big pumpkin drops.

Ya know, with so much tragedy happening throughout the world, we have so much to be thankful for, with the elction being the "big crisis" around here. The cartels in Mexico have killed nearly 30K, Indonesia was hit w/ an earthquake & volcano AT THE SAME TIME. The stories go on. So let's keep these people in our prayers, & be more civil to each other during this election. For, instead of attempting to vote for "the lesser of 2 evils", our mindset should be voting for the most outstanding candidate. Society is spiralling downward, but it's up to us to lift each other & our Country UP, for United we stand...& divided we fall. I wish all the candidates success post-election, & hope we all strive to be better people daily.

Help - Can't find this info anywhere.

Are there early voting hours on any evenings?

Is there early voting on Monday?

Not absentee, 'early' voting to be clear.

We know Thursday through Saturday from 8am to noon, closed for lunch, reopens 1pm to4pm, but not sure about an evening or Monday.

We do not have to smash a big pumpkin to get food for the food bank. It was on the radio that the food bank was bare and I'm sure that people have responded each time that they have announced the need. I know that Starke County Club's donate to the food bank all the time. Why does Tom Berg have to or want to be so destructive? Save the pumpkin, cut it up and make pumpkin pies instead.

Here's another idea to prolong the fun day, get somebody to volunteer a dunk tank complete with water. Have Tom and or other WKVI men volunteer to be dunked using smaller pumpkin at one dollar a pumpkin after all there is always lots of leftover pumpkins after Oct. 31. Think how much more money be raised destroying a few vegetables for the food pantry here in our county. So what do you think....

Anonymous said...

For many years my family raised and sold pumpkins, so after the season was over we sometimes gave away loads of the leftover ones--to people who had pigs and hogs...and those animals did not mind smashed, broken and less than perfect pumpkins so why not find a local pig farmer to take the leftover orange mess to recycle it back into the food chain for humans eventually. So find people raising pigs to help remove the orange mess. Or bring the pigs to the event and let them work their magic right on site.

I would like to thank the County for removeing the torn flags from the Jail and the County building.

The jail removed theirs the day after my original post.

The Courthouse removed theirs yesterday.

I apologize for not posting this sooner....

I guess I can assume that the replacement flags will be up by Election Day?????????

With the upcoming election and that's all anybody cares about is the pumpkin drop. Wake up Starke county let's deal with the problems in stead of avoiding them.

Way To Go Citizen! Standing up for trespassing rights. People need to know how to ask permission first.

Just went and got today's mail and for once someone is at least making the right attempt, by saying Stop Talking to a Brick Wall, this certainly pertains to our county. Let's make Tuesday make a difference.

to the person being hounded at the polling location, tell the people inside and they will run them off. campaigners have to stay a certain distance away for the chute (that's the law). if they don't they are asked to leave.

Anonymous said...

Yes no one is allowed to be within 50 feet of chute campaigning. THAT IS THE LAW.

I believe that there was a big two day conference in Indianapolis the day of the Regionals. A lot of the administration was attending that. Also, I saw several high school teachers at the game and even some middle school teachers. Way to go girls! Kick some butt on Saturday!

The County's web address is hard to remember. I always go to www.starkegop.com and use their links to government websites. You can find voting times at the County's site.

that was a very nice buck that taylor kimble shot, but whats with the remark that it's unusual because she's a girl?!! all the women in our family are hunters ( more females tham males )and my oldest daughter put her first mount on the wall, an 11 pointer, at the age of 15. this "men rule" attitude needs to go !!

Great Job promoting a fun time with the Great Pumpkin Drop to fund the empty food pantry, however, now Tom, we, you're loyal patient listeners who you both love and hate depending upon our opinion, we would appreciate an exact accounting of the following:
The exact number of signatures on all of the pumpkins;the number or poundage of the food collected; the amount of money donated and what it purchased plus the time it took to drop the Biggest Pumpkin plus the amount of dollar damage done to the car if it had been a new one that got damaged. And please do not refer everybody to your internet site because there are lots of older listeners and probably younger ones too that do not have a computer or internet.
And make sure you all count the number of witnesses to the event,
so the WHO, What, WHERE needs to be explained, it will keep Tom busy on Nov. 1, and maybe follow through a few days later and get a story on how many families that benefited from THE SOCIAL EVENT OF HALLOWEEN! Thanks for all the work to all involved. P.S. Have you recuited volunteer security to control the crowd?

Like everybody else I too am tired of the political ads that are filling the air, the mailbox and roadsides; but those things will soon be gone so be Thankful we live in a country where we have the free choice to vote and spend money to improve our community by having the courage to run for an office. There are places just going to vote can result in your death, and you best not even complain to your neighbor about some leader. Think what might have happen to this world, if the evil people of the world had succeeded in being in charge. Our Freedom includes the right to go vote and stop complaining. Most of the poorest of us Americans are still rich compared to lots of places in the world. That was our nation even back before 1950 when babies died of diseases so easily stopped today. So either exercise your right to vote, and be grateful that those ads pays for salaries of lots of people. If you do not like a person you once voted for, then go and vote for a different person. And ladies, you only got to vote in 1920, so take a little time and go support our Great Nation!

Here's suggestion to fill your early morning hours before people leave home, feature a different cause that benefits our community so that people can understand what goes in creating that organization.
Some people from the DNR, a visiting nurse, a minister or a teacher with a interesting hobby such as reinactments of olds. Or just an older person who lived through the worst of times to enjoy their life today! Keep it Positive as the news is negative enough, so uplift the morning listeners!

We just returned from the Great Pumpkin Drop out at Hensler's Nursery, and just wanted to take the time to thank WKVI for getting this fund-raising event going! What a great job and for such a great cause. We had an awesome time, something the kids will never forget.

We had an absolutely wonderful time at the pumpkin drop this morning! Just one suggestion, though. How about a drawing to pull the rope instead of an auction? Not everyone has over $300 in pocket change, but might be willing to shell out maybe 3 0r 4 bucks for a chance. Either way, can't wait for next year. Thanks Tom Berg for all the fun!

UP, UP AND AWAY went the Big Pumpkin, and ever so swiftly it came crashing down, What a Lesson in Science for all of Us kids of all ages, and what way to share the pulp. Great Job, Tom, Now you are going to have TO Think of a new Way to Bring our Community together in a positive way! We all await the Next Idea, so Thanks Again to you and your WKVI friends!
