You play a song every morning that I really like and would like to know the name of the singer, as well as, the name of the song. The lyrics go something like, "I'll live forevermore in a place I've never been in the presence of the Lord, I'm dying to live again." Can you help me out with this?

Also, the Market said there is an Angel Tree at the Library in North Judson. I believe there are names on each angel....you pull an angel and purchase for that person.

Try Love, Inc. for families in need at Christmas.

When is the county going to make the contactor who dug up 650 S. just East of the Lakewinds subdivision fix the spot he dug up. Traffic is pushing the stones out of the trench. I suppose us taxpayers will have to pay for the repair

I hope you remind the people that the Starke United Auction is going to be an both the AM AND the FM stations tomorrow starting at 10:00AM. The number to call is 574-772-7209. They have over $12,000 in Merchandise and Gift Certificates for people to bid on and help Starke County Organizations.

Anonymous said...

Lets donate to a lot of these good organizations, spend our money to help, give with the goodness of our hearts but never receive a thank you for these deeds of kindness. Yes it is wonderful to help, but no thank you returned. Sad the world has come to this. People may just quit giving.

Anonymous said...

The only thank you I need is know that what I donated went to someone who truly needed it. If you need to hear it then it wasn't from the heart.

The downtown looks festive with the Holiday decorations. Where are the decorations down US 35? The majority of shopping is located along the highway. Previously, Knox had candy canes hanging on all of the poles along the highway. Good project for the Art and wood working classes at the school with help from city funding. All areas and stores should be treated equal when it comes to promoting the Holiday season. Let's show alittle Knox holiday pride when someone drives thru Knox.

what wood working classes?

It is always good to see orginazation come into the communnity that help those who are struggeing with every day life. However, when one comes along that puts their own agenda or religious beliefs before the need of a family it gives me pause. When this orginazation refuses assistance to a FAMILY because they do not stand up to the orginazation's RELIGIOUS beliefs, you have to ask yourself what is their REAL agenda. If they deny support, assistance, aid, and/or ANY services available simply due to the fact that they are not legally married and telling that FAMILY that they are living in "sin"... Well, how charitable are they really. They are making the children suffer simply because the FAMILY does not meet their "standards". I to have religious beliefs, but I would not allow those in need suffer because I do not agree with their marital status or living conditions. Nor would I allow others to so without intervention. I am thankful that there are other groups in the community that wil assist those in need without having them go through an interview and a questionare to see if they "meet the standards" for assistance. You should be ashamed and look into your own hearts Love Inc. and try to see what really matters. Marital status, or the well being of others.

Liz said...

Randy,I do agree with you if you need assistance from an organization you should not be judged by their religious beliefs and therefore denied their assistance. Was this their reason? If so what is the meaning of "LOVE" in Love Inc.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know when Nichole Bridegroom goes on trial? I thought it was the 24th of Nov. Have not heard anything yet?

Anonymous said...

I agree with you Randy. Especially when there are children involved. Any worthwhile organization should be willing to help someone in need, no matter what the circumstances are.

Anonymous said...

I am not sure what this LOVE INC.
is all about.

I hink somone needs to investigate them.

Sounds like a phony organization, to me.

Starke United would like to thank all the people and organizations that helped make their Auction a success again this year. The final totals are not in yet but it will help several organization in Starke County. All money collected either from the auction or the campaign stays in Starke County. Also a BIG THANKS to CenturyLink for letting us use the Warehouse for the auction and thanks to WKVI for broadcasting it.

Anonymous said...

Love Inc. is not a phony organization, it helps people in need. No question asked, they are great.

Anonymous said...

Love, Inc., is church-based. Why are you surprised that they want to promote a degree of morality through their organization? Be honest...did they actually turn you down for assistance, or did you walk out on them when they suggested you change your living arrangements?

Anonymous said...

I could not agree more with the poster about the holiday decorations! I drive through MANY communities doing work orders and they all have up lights and decorations, making the towns look warm and friendly. Knox has practically nothing and you cannot see the candy canes at night. Where are the lights at?

Also, coming from a larger city... They often decorate their parks for the holidays. Google Hines Park in Plymouth, Michigan for a neat idea that would bring more money in to Knox. A wonderful huge light display that you drive through for the Christmas season. Grab some hot chocolate in a thermos and listen to some Christmas carols as you drive through it. Wythougan park would be a wonderful place to have this at!

Liz said...

I understand that Love Inc. is church based. But I thought this was an organization to help people in need.Sometimes it is hard enough to have to ask for assistance but then to have to listen to someone criticize your personal life and if this was the case I think I would have walked out too.My religion teaches me to pray for someone and not to judge.

Anonymous said...

As with most stories, there are two sides. My experience with LOVE, Inc. has always been positive. I would suggest that people find out for themselves what the organization is about before assuming the worst.

Anonymous said...

There were many people that helped with the auction. During the course of the day there were probably 40 people who helped. Also they raised over $7000 dollars. The final totals are not in yet.

Anonymous said...

Well RANDY... the family is MOST LIKELY suffering BECAUSE THEY DO LIVE IN SIN. Does anyone ever wonder why some families are so blessed, financially comfortable, or over-all healthier? It's usually because they strive to live according to God's way. It boggles my mind that so many people blame EVERYONE ELSE for their problems, but accept no responsibility for their illegitmate kids, poverty or unemployment. We drastically need Welfare Reform, for there should be NO Free Handouts. Instead, they can do some type of Community Service & take some type of classes. And nearly all these folks asking for assistance seem to have enough $ for cigarettes or beer. So..if someone's willing to help..you could AT LEAST show enough Appreciation & Respect to listen to their message, instead of being high & mighty & just wanting the "free handouts". It might not be a bad thing for Welfare to fold-up so that maybe these people will learn how to rise up & do something for themselves, for most of us are tired of seeing multi-generation families living off the system & having no conscience of how many kids they pop out. For in all actuallity, Welfare & Far Left Liberals are destroying the True American Dream...that you can do ANYTHING you want in America...for most just don't want to do ANYTHING to contribute to society. And F.Y.I...LOVE Inc.'s message is probably the most important info you'll ever receive in life...& I fully applaud them!

Anonymous,

I'm not sure who you think you are, but this pious nonsense you're spouting is some of the most offensive slander I've ever read.

Who are you to say someone is living in sin? Do you even know who they are? Simply because someone chooses to live their lives differently than someone as "holy" as you doesn't make them sinners, and it certainly doesn't make them bad people.

It sickens me that you believe so "righteously" that financial situations are determined entirely by someone's devotion to a "God." Has it ever occurred to you that, maybe, just maybe, they are in a bad place because of conditions outside of their control, and they're grateful for any handout they can get? Maybe it kills them inside to have to rely on the kindness of others, but it's a beautiful thing that we live in a country that has programs like these.

Your lack of sympathy for your fellow man disgusts me.

(Also, I would like to express my appreciation toward groups like Love, Inc. that try to help others in need. It's a true show of heart when people lend a helping hand to those in need, and those who receive this support are undoubtedly eternally grateful. Whether religion-based or not, true wholesome kindness is a rare treat in today's society that should never be taken for granted.)

Anonymous said...

I agree with Ben in regards to anonymous post of Dec.06.People such as you disgust me and you are a prime example as to why more and more people are turning away from church today.Your holier than thou rants will sent you to hell much faster than any couple seeking help who would not sit and be embarassed. Based on your idiotic statements it is clear you have no understanding of the Bible or of miracles performed by Jesus with no questions asked. Maybe Love Inc. should re-evaluate their high handed practice and refer more to teachings of the Bible.

Lori said...

I'm a Christian, but I agree that we Christians often have a haughty attitude, as if it is our right to turn our noses up at others who we think are not living up to our code of behavior. Truth is, none of us deserves ANY of our blessings. If you are a Christian, you believe that every good gift comes from God. Think of the parable of the vineyard owner who called workers several times throughout the day, but paid them all the same amount. It was his right, and he cheated no one. Let's be thankful for all we have, and not wish for others to have less.

I am a volunteer for Love In The Name of Christ. And I try not to judge anyone that I go to help. There is always going to be some who ask for help that don't need it or have another way of getting what they need. I am still glad they turn here so they can see God's love in action and hear what He has done for them on the cross. I never force it on anyone and if they don't want to hear then I stop. I know first hand that we are all human and make lots of mistakes. And of course many circumstances happen that we can't control. But God is in control! And all things happen, even our own mistakes so that we would seek God in our troubled times and see that He is a loving, compassionate, gracious creator. Who is not willing that any should perish but that all would come to repentance. He has said He has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that all would repent. I am a sinner, but saved by grace, through faith in Him. All who are thirsty, let them come to the fountain and drink, that they thirst no more.

Does anyone know if they do back ground checks on the people who sign-up to do CASA?

Anonymous said...

to suggest that I am living in sin so that is why things are going bad is another dumb statement. My wife and I have been married for 15 years, we both have worked hard to raise our 4 children, volunteer when possible, give $$ when we can. Then we both lost our jobs (downsize). We are now doing our best to stay afloat in this economy.

Regards to Anonymous post Dec.6th.I read your post and had to read it again!Sounds like you are full of hate for those that need assistance.I do agree with you about the welfare system,it is abused but not by everyone that is on it.Just because there's a few "bad apples in the cart does not make them all bad".Just remember this is the season for giving!Merry Christmas

There is alot of communication here on the Love Inc. organization. I have donated and helped adopt a family a christmas through the organization. Is someone willing to give names of instances that are happening so that donors like myself can question the Love Inc organization? I am willing to help those in need but I do agree with checking into situations. Unfortunately we do have some people that play the systems. I would appreciate any feedback you can help me with.

This is the season for giving. If everyone in starke county gave only $1.00 just think the amount of money it would be to help the needy, There are lots of needy people in this county. Give to the food pantry, give to the Phoneix house for abused women, give to your church to help someone there. Support a child through CASA. $1.00 is not so much that you can't spare it. Have a blessed Holiday season, Give thanks and praise to our Lord God.

The Week in Review in Comments:
I only look at this stuff on Saturday, and now add my 2 cents to yu keyboard criticizers.
1. Love, Inc. The ultimate hypocrisy is from those who would do nothing for the poor, yet critizice those who do. Unless you give money, deliver Christmas baskets, or give your coats to those in need, then your opinion means nothing. It's just a bunch of hot air. who cares what you say. A hungry child child certainly doesn't.
2. My nephew is a CASA and he had a background check on him. So, to the complainers, yes they do, and you would know if you volunteered. Again we have the tounge waggin, but the feet aren't movin.
3. Holiday decoration complainers: So, besides complaining, whacha gonna do? I am sure that Knox would accept a donation of money or a Christmas decoration of some type and put it to use. Don't have any money? Then, go to city hall and offer to donate your time to put up decorations. you want it pretty, then offer to DO something about it other than complain. This isn't a required government function, but anything that our city workers do is out of the goodness of their hearts. If you had any goodness in your heart, then ACT. Your criticism is like Charlie Brown's teacher, "wah, wah, wah." Nobody is listening to your worthless blithering. Feed the poor, volunteer for CASA, and help with the city's Christmas decorations. Then maybe we will listen.

Anonymous said...

Why is it, that all the cable channels are advertising all their Great Christmas programs, yet not 1 single program is Christ centered? I love Knox, born & raised. Enjoyed ice cream @ Davis's, buying candy at Schultz's Bros., getting a soda at Ritter's, & even cruising & hangin @ Free Parking...& even had 2 paper-routes as a kid, w/ 1 selling GRIT door to door. Or going to the library when it was "uptown". During Christmas, there'd be a Christmas tree in the middle of Lake & Main St., with speakers loudly playing all types of Christmas music. We used to have Candy Canes that were hung, but b4 that we had Christmas figures(angels, etc.) that lit up. I even remember large Candle decorations. I thought we also had a nativity Scene on the Court House lawn. But, as I recall, there was alot of community involvement. People didn't complain, instead they asked "how can I help?". So pertaining to Love Inc., I applaud your caring, helpful, hearts...and am proud to hear that your PRIORITY is leading people to Christ. I'd be honored for you to come to my home so I could donate & be able to have Fellowship. So, if you all think what I said was "eons" ago...I'm under 40.

Yes, remember when Dollar General was the "dime store", maybe called Falvies or something, and it had two levels...downstairs had all the toys and decorations. I loved that place when I was a kid...especially at the holidays!

The Dollar General was called Schultz Bros. when it was a dime store and I loved it too. Falvey's was a clothing store on the next block north.

Why is it that every superintendent that Knox has had waits until the very last moment to call a delay or close?

Must be a requirement that they don't care about their students or staff.

Don't want to delay too soon and let the kids sleep in. Get them up early and then decide to close.

Anonymous said...

No kidding. Every school around us has a delay or cancellation and we have nothing. I don't really want the kids to have make up days, but the conditions outside are obviously bad. If we have school with no delay, attendance will be deplorable.

Anonymous said...

I am wondering if anyone can tell me where I might get some help with christmas gifts for my grandsons. I had signed up for toys for tots but no one ever contacted us. My son is working part time and has had a hard time finding full time work and my daughter is a full time college student. I take care of the three boys so they can work but I have been out on disability all year after getting hurt. Any help would be appreciated. I can be contacted at momallfour@yahoo.com Thank you.

Why is it that Knox school's seem to lack common sense in situations like these? We, as parents, know that just 1 snowday lowers the amount the State gives to OUR schools. But when we already have 12" drifts on roads, then get hit with a ton of snow like it is right now...how hard is it to say "I do not think it will be safe for the kids to travel" & cancel school? Do you not think it would give us parents a headstart in making arrangements? I know Knox was the last to make the 2 hr.delay & pretty certain they'll be the last to cancel. So who is it that "has the power" to make these decisions, because obviously they have no foresight...or what's that called....wisdom?

Anonymous said...

With the weather outside so bad, I agree Knox schools need to get their priorities straight. It is obvious that most people will be snowed in where they are. I am not gettig my children up and dressed, then go outside and try to shovel my way out, just so the kids can get sent back home as soon as I finish. It is ridiculous to think that anyone is going anywhere in this mess. Make a decision and consider the safety of the students, the staff, and the parents that have to venture out into this mess, and make that decision in a timely manner.

Anonymous said...

When my kids were little, if the weather was looking bad, I would make "what if" arrangements for their care. I'd call grandma or the babysitter and see if they would be available to watch the kids the next day if there was a cancellation or delay. Maybe that would work for you. It IS stressful to have to worry about where your kids are going to be.

Anonymous said...

I just wanted to say that I think Tom Berg does an awesome job he is very nice and doesn't make you feel bad or below him when you call in like someone else who use to work there. I enjoy listening to him. He has a very good personality.

Anonymous said...

The call to delay or cancel is made by our illutrious superintendant AJ Gappa. If you have issues, I suggest you call him or complain to the school board.

Anonymous said...

I,too, would like to commend Tom Berg on a great job. I think it was awsome that he came in on Sunday to keep us updated, and then stayed to start his program an hour earlier. Thank you Tom!!!!

WKVI's Morning Man Tom went above and beyond his job and probably saved some lives by spending Sunday night at the station. I awoke to hear him taking calls about the road conditions, it is good to know that our community is blessed with him and his coworkers who braved the weather to help out during this storm. Everybody ought to thank him for doing so and all of the county snow plow drivers too.

Anonymous said...

So, STARKE CO is under a State of Emergency for Tues.Dec 14th, it's still snowing heavily at 10pm, forecast to snow all night & day Tues., OD & NJ has already cancelled....but our Superintendent AJ Gappa still has Knox on a 2hr delay? IS THAT CORRECT? If he waits til 7am to make the decision again...someone needs to take this up at the School Board Meeting. That's rediculous to keep all the parents wondering, when we KNOW it's not gonna be safe at all. Do you think that by knowing the night before would help parents make plans...instead of waiting to cancel a 1/2 hr. before the bus arrives?

Anonymous said...

When we are under a State of Emergency we are told NOT TO BE ON THE ROADS due to bad weather. So why are people driving? Stay home, close up and be safe. A number of businesses were closed on Monday, good for them. To bad the police were busy and couldn't issue fines. Next time, stay off the roads. Great job Tom. It's about time someone at WKVI steps up and helps the county.

My husband and I live in Starke County but work in Pulaski County. It appears the weather and road conditions are night and day for these two counties. I am commenting because as we understand it, its illegal for us to drive to work. We don't want to risk getting a ticket as we don't have an emergency. Plus we assume the State of Emergency is for a reason, i.e. the roads are unsafe. Having Knox and the Courthouse open is understandable but I think only people who live in the incorporated limits are supposed to come to work right? Why would they be asking people to go against the State of Emergency? The way its be sounding on the radio is that if you can make it somewhere then go. How are we supposed to know if we can make it and why would we go against the State of Emergency? I think it should be made clear that you can only drive if in the Knox limits. Driving outside of Knox is illegal until the State of Emergency is lifted.

Anonymous said...

How are we supposed to know if the roads are safe? This is crazy. My employer is now wanting me to drive to Pulaski County to work. How do I know if the roads are safe. Plus, what Ted just said, if I attempt to drive to Winamac and get stuck then I will not get help and get a ticket. PLEASE ASK MR. BRIDEGROOM to make a decision. I cannot believe this.

Anonymous said...

i think tom berg had fun during mondays snowday, coming in on sunday just not to be late for monday morning work, that is a good employee.

the radio station has had a history of producing a good knox mayor, i think tom berg should run for knox mayor, just want to put it out there.

if he is mayor maybe tom wont leave us for kelly and tom show in nyc.

Anonymous said...

I am sorry, but whether you decide to drive to work in Starke County or not is not Mr. Bridegroom’s decision. We have 3 commissioners as do the surrounding counties; they are doing what they can but cannot govern your household. Let’s face it people, it is December and in this part of Indiana that means snow. The government building for example is within city limits, where Knox Mayor Rick Chambers has announced that the snow emergency in the City of Knox has been lifted. What do we really expect them to do? The employees of Starke County are grown adults, and together with their office holders can decide if they alone should come into the office. I heard on the radio, that one of the gentlemen stayed the night at the station… would you do that for your job? Please do not hold other people responsible for your decisions, if you must go out and drive please be careful!

Anonymous said...

I agree with some of the earlier comments - Tom Berg is doing an AWESOME job on WKVI!

Anonymous said...

We have Mpi here in Knox that doesn't understand the State of Emergency codes either. It was for starke, porter, laporte and according to the HR dept. there (or they just don't give a crap about the employees, or don't listen well) the HR said starke cty was not involved in that so who ever didn't show up for work gets points counted towards them. Most of the employess already know that place don't give a crap anymore about the employees. What about the SAFETY of the employees? Isn't that a bunch of bullcrap!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Why wait til Tues morning to make the Knox Scool cancellation when we ALREADY know Starke Co. was in a State Of Emergency for Tues? We have people questioning if it's legal or worth the risk to drive to work...yet the school was still debating it's options? And "someone" commented that it was "handled correctly"...yet I see NJ & OD had enough foresight to cancel the night before. I applaud NJ & OD & wish Knox would act in the same common sense manner instead of making parents wait til the morning of...especially with the conditions that were present. Pretty rediculous really.

PLEASE consider playing a different venue of music! Play 'Oldies' or something, but ANYTHING other than the junk that is played in the mornings....I have to turn you to another station until the news comes on, and then I miss it half of the time....come on, have a heart, the 'music' that Tom Berg plays in the mornings is brutal, to say the least! Please take into consideration that over 50% of listeners are over the age of 40!

I see Laporte Co is still under a Level 1 emergency but I a also see there schools on a 2 hour delay. Where are all the negitave comments about Laporte Co goverment . I am sure a few Starke Co people will drive to Laporte today. What a few Starke Co people do is try to find a reason not to go to work and blame it on someone else. Thats a great example to set for our children

I turned my radio on Tues. AM at 5:27. I did not hear any of the delays/cancelations until 5:48. They weren't mentioned during the 5:30 news. Sure, they're on the website.....I guess that means I don't have to listen to the radio....because heaven forbid that we be thrown off schedule by saying what the delays/cancelations are a bit mroe often. The website is great - but I'd rather listen to the radio for my information.

Im glad to know that my children go to a school system where they are more concerned about having to make up a day or even a two hour delay than our childrens safety. It's 10 to 12 below zero depending on where you live here in Knox and our children are expected to stand outside and wait for the bus, or walk to school.

I am a parent with kids in the Knox school system and here is a thought...YOU are the parent! If you don't feel comfortable with your child going out in the weather conditions & school has not yet been cancelled...KEEP THEM HOME! Unless they have an attendance problem (which means you let them stay home often anyway) then it should not be an issue to catch up if school does happen to be in session that day. Most children do not inform you 2 days in advance that they are going to get sick in the middle of the night so that alternate babysitting arrangements can be made, so I know as a parent I always had a "emergency" back-up plan in place because I was a working parent.

Hi, Starke County

What exactly does the school superintendant do? I know the make over $100K, but the teachers do all the "hands on teaching" with our kids & I bet none of the kids even know who our Super is. So what exactly do they do that warrants such a nice income? I feel that if anyone deserves high wages then it should be the teachers. There should be a "merrit system" that based on the kids grades, the teacher could get a raise. But the Super should make no more $ than the highest paid teacher. 6 figures is rediculous, because the school would function fine without a Super, but couldn't function at all without the teachers.

When the commissioners declare a state of emergency they can't say use your own judgment if you want to drive to work. Emergency vehicles only. Period. You can't have a level 1 emergency and have the courthouse open and invite the citizens to drive illegally to the courthouse. Thats inviting you to break the law. The one who makes the law tells us to decide whether we want to follow it? If we get a ticket shoud we send it to commissioer Bridegrroom?

Why do people have to be destructive? Those people that wrecked the community center should be arrested for doing all that damage. They should have to clean up the building, wash the walls, repair all the damage and replace the furniture. They are the ones that rented the building for a wedding. What an awful memory for the bride and groom. Why did the police go home early? They get paid for patroling the building. What a black spot on Starke County again.

I've been reading this page all week and I can't hold it in any longer. The word is rIdiculous not rEdiculous. You have posted so many times spelling it wrong that anyone can see that all of these posts come from the same person. We get it, you are not happy with Gappa, but please if you want to be taken seriously learn how to spell one simple word.

Anonymous said...

What's "rediculous" is that a parent who is complaining about the school corporation cannot even spell the word correctly! I have seen this spelled incorrectly in several posts so have to assume it is the same person repeatedly whining. The word is RIDICULOUS...no E in it.

As the other person said, you are the parent. If the roads are unsafe in your opinion, then why would you put them in a vehicle with ANYONE? If you wouldn't drive on the road, why would you allow your child on a bus full of noisy kids who are going to add further distraction to the driver? If there is a chance school will be canceled, then you should be the one responsible for making alternative arrangements just in case they are needed.

I was very disappointed in hearing the news about the Knox Community Center being damaged. The building is very nice to hold events in. Not sure why people feel the need to destroy things for no apparent reason. I agree with previous posts, why not release the names of the people who rented it and and get their comments. It is so disgraceful that we co-habitate with these types of immature individuals. PS...when I rented the KCC for an event we hired security for the amount of time that our bar was open. So don't blame the officers for leaving early. It is the responsiblity of the people who rented it to make sure their guests behave maturely, and leave the building in the same condition that they rented it in.

Nice article and pictures from Kostas Restaurant in Winamac. This is one of my favorite places to go. They are amazing people and always go above and beyond. Not to mention the fact the food is incredible and well priced. It is nice that this hidden gem has been discovered.

Just because the courthouse was open, did not mean that you were forced to come to it!! The commissioners can absolutely say “use your own judgment” and you should do that every day of your life! If you hand over responsibility of your life and your actions to someone else, you are asking for big trouble! We make decisions everyday regarding the “law” and those choices all have their consequences. For such a finger pointer, I sure hope you buckle up each day!! If YOU get a ticket, that would mean YOU made a poor choice and therefore YOU should pay for it! This is why our children are growing up with such problems; everyone wants to pass the buck! Nobody wants to take responsibility for their own actions and responsibilities! Its winter people, if you have not learned how to properly acclimate yourself to driving in these conditions; PLEASE do us all a favor and just keep off the roads state of emergency or not!!! Why is it that when this one person posts about the commissioners, it only commissioner Bridegroom who takes the hit? You appear as someone who likes to get off for doing little to no work and just don’t like people who do their job and take it seriously!! Bet you didn’t get a ticket either, did you?

Anonymous said...

when the bar closes does not make people un-drunk, officer should stay till public is gone. maybe he did, dont really know.

the damages will happen, hopefully not this much, the renters signed a contract to pay for all damages for enforce it.

could make center smoke and booze free

Anonymous said...

Why should only Dan Bridegroom be mentioned is he is a bully.

If you have ever talked to him you know exactly what I am talking about.

This man thinks he is way above everyone in Starke County.

The other two Commissioners let him call all the shots and they agree with him.

He runs the County.
If you don't agree just attend the Commissioner's meetings.

Anonymous said...

So are you saying that you attend all Commissioners meetings, because you know so much? Make sure your hands are clean before you start pointing fingers! Passive people pleasers just don’t get the job done!

Anonymous said...

I heard Bridegoom on the radio after they declared it a level 1 emergency saying that the courthouse is open for business. You cant have it both ways. it would be the same as saying that there is a ban on burning but do whatever you think is best for you. What does level 1 mean? I thought it means that you cannot legally drive on the roads unless you are an emergency vehicle. So you can't tell people to use their own judgement on wether to go to work or not. Its illegal for anybody to drive to work if the comissioners declare a level 1 emergency unless you are driving an emergency vehicle. It doesnt matter wether you work at a bank or McDonalds or MPI or the courthouse. What am I missing here?

Reading the posts on here is ridiculous! (I can spell it!) No one is ever going to make everyone happy. You complain that school should be delayed or cancelled earlier, but anyone who lives in northern Indiana knows how fickle the weather can be. Why call a cancellation, and then have the snow miss us and we've wasted a day off only to have to make it up when the weather is nice! Mr Gappa doesn't have a crystal ball to predict the weather. Having a delay on Tuesday, gave the schools a chance to get the day in, if the snow emergency had been lifted soon enough. It wasn't and school was cancelled. Good call in my opinion!

I love reading all of the comments people make. To me it seams like no one is happy no matter what.

Granted, Starke County does not always make logical decisions in our eyes and there are going to be things we do not like but we have the CHOICE at attend a School Board Meeting, a Town Hall Meeting or even a Commissioners Meeting.

Remember boys and girls, if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

FYI:
Use spell check and proof read your comments. That's how Starke County gets its bad name.

Anonymous said...

spelling has nothing to do with starke county and a bad rep.

its little things like, missing county money, fires, meth out of control, teacher fathering a child with a student and school knowing and even covering that child under schools health insurance. or vote for a mayor when you live in plymouth, vote for a new school board member, then school wont let him take his seat for 6 months.

and i cant find spell check on this site, if it is here help me find it please

To December 17th at 7:26am before one casts aspersions on another for spelling one should make sure that they themselves have in fact spelled everything correctly. In you post you put "To me it seams like no one is happy no matter what." The correct spelling for your meaning would be seems. Now when it comes to spelling come on people everyone has typos and everyone makes mistakes. I can tell you I have posted things with mistakes and will again because I am human. If that is all you have to say then please don't waste your time.

Does anyone remember Mr. John Whitenack? He was an announcer on WKVI. But before that, he was an English teacher at North Judson High School. He was insistant on the proper usage of the English language. He taught us and corrected us when we used a word in the wrong way. You sound intelligent and people tend to take you more seriously when you know how to spell and communicate properly. Reading these comments that have been written about the spelling lately just proves the state of our education system in the area. I am glad that I was taught by one of the areas greatest teachers. Thank you, Mr. Whitenack, I wish there were more like you!!

1st of all, there is no spell check, & most people I know r typing in "text" now. But....YES...Bridegroom operates like he's King George. & I agree w/ the Dec17,9am about the teacher/coach fathering a child w/ a student on taxpayer $. He actually dated many students... & FYI...the school board knew about it. But she's a wonderful young lady & a beautiful child, that we wish total success for. About them refusing to seat an elected member 6 mon. for "conflict of interest", when a very long tenured member has been profiting from the Retirement Funds for decades, so how's that not a conflict of interest? But the GREATEST disappointment I have is the lack of a REAL community center, especially for the mentoring of our children, whom many live in broken homes. We desperately need something w/ an indoor b-ball court, indoor track, gym & even a "hall room" & more, so the community center we have now does not come close in meeting the needs of our community, & is really just a waste of what "coulda-been". And I would just like to know school's cancelled the night before so I can take a vacation day & treasure the unexpected time w/ my kids. But, I still love my town, see many positives(especially so many wonderful people), & wish nothing but Joy & Blessings for all during this wonderful celebration of our Lord's birth.

If you follow Knox sports you will know that the girls basketball team only has 2 wilns under their belts..It dosn't look to improve. For whatever reason Knox can not seem to higher a coach that knows how to use the talent that is available.

I was always under the impression that a game of basketball waas played by a group of five players on the court at one time. At Knox HS it appears that the lady redskins only have Miss Gilbert. Although she is very scrappy, she is to small to protect the ball. You would think the coach would be knowledgable enough of the game to use plays and players to change things up. there is no reason with the talant on that bench that this team is not having a winning season.

The Masons have adopted a family, Demotte State Bank is collecting food and gifts for families in need, Economy Auto Sales is collecting food and cash donations for the local food bank and they are matching all donations up to $1,000.00! I guess it is pick on Ted day, it is probably a relief for Tom the morning man, I am sure that it does not stress Ted out much because it means that people are listening to WKVI. Everybody makes mistakes, the previous morning man's response to a mistake in his news, "I just read it, I do not write it." So some place on this planet, somebody listed a dead person as alive. I have heard of the social security agency stopping a check for a live person because they considered them to have died. It was hard to get it straighten out, that would be a bigger problem than reading a mistake. It is nice that previous WKVI people living and otherwise are remembered. John the teacher was one of the best on the radio, and I thinks losts of us listeners enjoyed him on the radio broadcasts.

I have to agree, the artwork in the REMC calendar is spectacular! A few of the pictures are so realistic, I had to look twice to make sure they weren't photographs. Great job!

Still not listing the names of the people who destroyed community center? Wow...I will never support wkvi or listen ever again. I bet I spend more there than the grandpa of the kids you won't list...

Anonymous said...

1. Yes WKVI did name the people that were taking responsibility for the community center issue.

2. You seem more bent on trying to stir up more animosity (sp) than to understand that it is not an issue. The place was rented and the people responsable are taking responsibility to pay for the repairs. So what is the issue? What constructive purpose is there to keep bringing it up?

I dont care who did it or why it happened. Tax dollars are not paying for the repairs. So what is your motivation since names were reported on the radio? Sounds like a personal vendetta on your part? WKVI did a great job Reporting and not opinionizing the issue. No need to make things worse on the young couple that is taking responsibility for their actions?

If you rent a place and have an agreement in the rental contract to pay for any excessive damages over the inital deposit. Then damage the place and agree to pay for the damages then no there isnt any charge for vandalism. You are living up to the terms of the contract. It will probably be in better condition when the work is finished than before they rented it.

To add comments to several posts about the community center:

"Yes WKVI did name the people..."

Answer: No, originally you did not name them and after several people sent messages, which most were unposted, you named who had rented it. The big argument was to the person/people saying it was none of anyone's business, which I believe it is.

"You seem more bent on trying to stir up more animosity (sp) than to understand that it is not an issue. The place was rented and the people responsable are taking responsibility to pay for the repairs. So what is the issue? What constructive purpose is there to keep bringing it up?"

Answer: People take responsibilty everyday for mistakes they make, so why do the police reports need to be put on your website and reported on the radio?

"I dont care who did it or why it happened. Tax dollars are not paying for the repairs..."

Answer: I do care! Do you think if I'm a business owner I would want to rent my house/building to someone who has destroyed property in the past? That is a great message to send to kids! Go destroy someone else's property since we have enough money to fix it that means we are "taking responsibility" and you won't get in trouble. Whoever posted the above quotes must be a parent of one of the kids.

"If you rent a place and have an agreement in the rental contract to pay for any excessive damages over the inital deposit. Then damage the place and agree to pay for the damages then no there isnt any charge for vandalism. You are living up to the terms of the contract. It will probably be in better condition when the work is finished than before they rented it."

Answer: WOW, is all I can say. It scares me that there are people who really think like this. Let me start by saying renting a place to live and a place for a wild party are 2 different things. So accidently spilling grape juice on the floor or having a door hit the wall to hard and not getting your deposit back is the same as destroying walls, floors, picking up and throwing chairs and tables owned by the city? If I spray paint police cars and get caught I won't get in trouble as long as I pay for it since the new paint job is nicer than the old one? I sure hope you don't have kids or work with them, I'd hate to see how they act when they are 25 years old!

I'd love to hear what others think about my statements! Am I crazy or are the people thinking it is ok what they did? I'm sick of the way things work around here. If no one gets in trouble for destroying it they would have been better off burning it down then it could have been built elswhere and big enough for a sports/rec complex so everyone could use it daily and actually help the community.

oh my in the dec 25 10:54am post i found a misspelled word, so everything the person said is meaningless.

this was the tone of 2010 spelling wrong or a typo you were treated like an idiot.

What word is misspelled?

Anonymous said...

I don't think the names of the people who rented the community center that night is anyone's business! Are you going to go over to their house and holler at them for what happened, or do you just want to know who it was so you can be more specific when you so gossip about them all over town?

Ben said...

@Anonymous, 10:54am:

"The big argument was to the person/people saying it was none of anyone's business, which I believe it is."

Much of what we consider "news" consists of something that at least one person wishes would not be published. What I am trying to say here is that if the media didn't publish something because somebody didn't want it to become public business, then there wouldn't be much news at all.

"People take responsibilty everyday for mistakes they make, so why do the police reports need to be put on your website and reported on the radio?"

People have a right to know what is going on in their communities.

"Go destroy someone else's property since we have enough money to fix it that means we are 'taking responsibility' and you won't get in trouble."

In no way is that the same as what happened at the Community Center. They made an agreement prior to the event for the tenant to pay for any damages that might occur, both parties accepted the existence of that risk and one accepted responsibility if it occurred.

"So accidently spilling grape juice on the floor or having a door hit the wall to hard and not getting your deposit back is the same as destroying walls, floors, picking up and throwing chairs and tables owned by the city?"

That's the purpose of a rental agreement with a security deposit and responsibility for damage, yeah. Things happen, as long as the responsible party steps up and pays for the damages everything sounds pretty square.

Also, I should mention that the community center is a place for gatherings and events. Therefore, a lot of people get together in one space, and there will always be a possibility of things getting out of hand. As such, it's a very real risk, and one that is specifically addressed in these agreements. It could be considered a "last case scenario," but it is still a real possibility that both parties realize, understand, and accept.

Anonymous said...

It certainly is my business. Would you want to rent or lease your property to the people who destroyed this place? I think not! Thus the reason to know the names of the guilty party.

Anonymous said...

Please
Lets get on another Topic.

We have been on the Community Center long enough.

Let's get a life and talk about something that needs to be addessed on here.

We need to stop correcting people's spelling. Who cares how a word is spelled.

I was born and raised on a farm east of Knox.

After my Army Career I setteled in Fresno, California.

It is so enjoyable to read good news on here.

But all the bickering is so sad that you have to post it on here.

Lets try to just post Good News for the New Year.

I am sure people that were born and raised there and now live elsewhere agree.

Let's act like adults and not try to cut Starke County down.

Tom--the voice of WKVI==is bored this morning, so folks why not cheer up that poor fellow. Help cheer him up, all of us listeners, donate truck loads of snow to the radio station, there's lots of room beside and behind the station.
Wouldn't it draw a crowd of well wishers bringing lots of food to the station and encourage him to volunteer to be bubble wrapped, and supplied with oxygen and be dropped into a real mountain of snow, it could be broadcast near and far and it might even get mentioned on the Letterman show! He might even win as the only brave radioman on that morning show featuring Kelly! Winter is so boring so lets encourage Tom and enjoy his humor TODAY!

About the names of local areas, did you know that Toto once had a post office when it was known as Rye, probably named for a grain crop grown in the area. And some said the name Toto came from a note on the railroad schedule with a note saying To to. Toto was a railroad stop with people able to ride to Knox, N.Judson,Valparaiso and other places. There are postmarks of Rye, Indiana, because it also had a post office. I have some that shows the name and post office. It was probably a much busier place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Electricity did not come to Toto until the 1940s, when the REMC co-op was organized for rural homes in Starke County. It also had stores and taverns and much more crime in those days as well as churches. Toto even had its own newspaper columnist those day written by a local lady, it featured news on all of the local families. There was a pickle factory, that's how the Weinberg store come to be big store of the area known far and wide. Local children only had to walk a mile or two to the one room schools so education was important in those days. My grandfather took a train to Valparaiso Normal College for Teachers so he was a qualified teacher after 9 months of education. Lots of local farmers could teach because there was no school in the summer. And those early schools were named for the family where the school was located. The law required children go to school through eighth grade and schools be located close enough for the children to walk to school in very beginning of the Indiana education law.

Glad to see the Prosecutor transition go smoothly, with keeping the experience in place. But....do we REALLY need 4 PROSECUTORS? From the Police Blotter that's reported each week, there shouldn't be ANY reason that 1 Prosecutor & 1 Asst.Prosecutor should be more than enough to handle the job. We talk about downsizing Gov't where possible...but this just seems to be unnecessary TAXPAYER $ being wasted. Being an elected position, I certainly hope he takes the spending of OUR TAX $ importantly, & to only see his office expand does not show that. That's a position that takes courage, & it takes courage to let un-needed, wasteful positions go for the sake of taxpayers.

one of my foundedst memories as a kid and not all that long ago is that of wasting my days away on christmas break doing what EVERY kid in town did.....sledding at the park. i took my kids to the park the other week to sled and was rather disappointed with the fact that there is only one hill to "safely" go down. now i understand that things change and times change and it can be somewhat dangerous but the fencing and benches and whatnot at the softball field were either not there or were able to be moved unlike now. i also realize that this is a rather small community and that funds need to be stretched but how much foresight and capitol would it have taken to say hey theres is NOTHING in this town for the kids so why dont we make these things removable or portable ? now more than ever is sledding a great way to spend a day or a week with your family or friends on no more cash than a cup of hot chocolate afterwards but instead we have to travel to CMA or valpo or southbend to do this....even with the greed-mongers in power here im sure they could further line thier pockets by charging a buck for the day or having a warming shed at the bottom of the hills selling hot coco or coffee....just seems like the local government for years have gone almost out of thier way to drive out the youth which ironically is who everyone will look to in the future to keep the area afloat unless our city and government officals want our town to fully degrade into another ora, toto, winona, ober or so on....

Wow...the last few weeks of the year have provided more rape/child molestation cases than we've seen this year. If so, that is pretty bad she didn't want to try these cases so she just leaves them on the street for months...

Just saw that indiana might become a right to work state, THIS WOULD BE VERY BAD! for anyone who is in/wants to join or is retired from a labor union. Many people could care less about this but Those of us who work in a union must contact state reps and tell them we do not want this. It is a major step back for the labor movement not only in the state but in the country. Plus in reality the dues you pay aren't really missed

Anonymous said...

if you want to go sledding..drive over to Judson and enjoy the slopes beside Norwayne Field - you don't have to go to Valpo or South Bend.

Anonymous said...

The park board does not want kids to use the park for sledding. That is dangerous. All they had to do was remove a couple of trees and stumps and fill in some ruts and move some fencing a make a nice sledding hill for kids to use in the winter. But nooooo, they don't think it's safe. The kids still do it and the parents still take them. Why not just make it safe and leave it at that? They just care about how things look, not how things get used. How about a outside skating rink in the winter? It could be done pretty cheaply and I'm sure some parents would help set it up.

Why should anyone have to attend a Park Board Meeting to voice our concerns over sledding on the hills? We've been doing it for 40 years since I was young, was done long before that, and then the Park Board comes along & stops it? Obviously the Park Board members are not from around here, or have no idea of past recreations we have for kids, because there's VERY little. But I feel Common Sense should have stepped in long ago. What amazes me is that you'll build a very dangerous skate park, but put a stop to sledding. I just take my kids to other towns now, that cater to sledding & other activities for kids. BTW...where's the meetings? At the "Community Center"?

Seriously? "That's there, not here"??

Whats wrong with going 'there'?

I'm sick of this 'town bias'. What's wrong with traveling to a town you don't live in once in a while. You might find something interesting. Shocking, right?

We are a community, not just Knox, or North Judson, or Plymouth or whatever.

No town is an island. I have a feeling that some people who live here would like it to be though.

Too bad. You don't know what you're missing.

The business people say shop locally.

The reason I shop out of town is, we have no clothing or shoe stores.

I can buy groceries and gas cheaper in other towns or cities.

I have to go out of town for entertainment.

Our boys basketball coach stated at the Argos Tournament, that the players are not smart enough to win.
Where does he think he is coaching?? THEY ARE IN THIS MESS BECAUSE OF HIM, no one wants to play for him.

Go figure!!!!

My wife and I would love to get involved with the happenings of Knox but we do not seem to own expensive vehicles or be blessed with one of maybe ten last names that you need to be heard in our community. I am positive we are not alone in that feeling. Just a very sad state of "community" we have here.

We are not crying about our Knox girls basketball team.

We have a great team, just not the coach.

We have a lot of Senior Talent that the Coach is not using.

He will win about 10 games then he has nothing coming up.

Same thing as what is happing with the boys program

Athletic Director and School Board is allowing it to happen.

To December 31 Anonymous. Look at what you wrote. "My wife and I would love to get involved with the happenings of Knox but we do not seem to own expensive vehicles or be blessed with one of maybe ten last names that you need to be heard in our community." History is filled with people who had no money or status, but had an idea to help others and put it into motion. Volunteer at a school, nursing home, or hospital. Start a food drive or coat and hat drive. Take a couple of friends and pick up trash to make the city clean. The possibilities are endless and it nobody cares what kind of car you drive or your last name. Some people are ducks and some are eagles. You can post your ideas and seek recruits to help you right on this website. Some people would rather complain than get off their duff and actually do someting. I drive a 1998 Ford Ranger and our church youth group has volunteered to pick up trash. But, it is easier to type on a keyboard with your clean fingernails than to get some dirt under those fingernails by actually doing something. God bless you and may 2011 be the year that you and your wife step up and be eagles.
