Mrs. Dembowski needs to address all the Fed.& State Regulations & Fees that are charged to new industries that want to build. It's NOT the cost of labor moving our businesses overseas...it's the all the corporate fees from the government. If they'd majorly decrease these, then there'd be an influx of companies that'd come back to America. Now I'd say, whomever the Politician is that can get this done, would be a hero in the eyes of Americans. And if you think 1 person can't change things, then look back at the 1 woman who got the Bible taken out of all of America's schools. We need politicians in there that want to FIGHT for Americans rights, & not just "make motions" & small talk. It's not difficult to see the injustice being done to America's industry by our very own Gov't. CHANGE IT!

Seriously? So now they want to form a committee to upgrade security at the courthouse??? Come on. We have a sleeply little court house that deals with minor crime compared to big cities. This is just a complete waste of money.
If you go to the courthouse in Gary, it's like walking into a prison. Metal detectors as well as armed officers maning the post. They have good reason to have such a system since most of their crimes deal with murder and the families of victims. We don't have that here. Most of the time there are hardly any people in the courthouse compared to larger ones, so why annoy people and waste tax dollars when we have no need for such a system.

Is the rumor true that the Infamous Dollar Store on Main Street is moving to the Knox mall???

Thank you to nj school board/athletic department for hosting the 85-86 basketball reunion. Little things like this not only are good for the community but for our children to see a glimpse into our future.

To the post of jan 24 12:17pm You hit the nail right on the head.
Lets keep extending unemployment
and take off the part that they need to look for a job while they are drawing it for 2 years. And when we get so far in the hole lets raise all the small businesses rates that are trying to keep their heads above water now. I have not seen one tax break for small businesses if you have 300 employees you can get all types of help but have under 30 people and you will pay. They lowered employees share paid into social security but left the business share the same if not more. As far as Starke County goes why don't they add a 5 cent tax on alcohol do you think that consumer is going to not buy that six pack because it went up .25 . Or that guy sitting on my bar stool bragging he just got another extension so he doesn't have to look for a job for another 3 months is going to not buy that next beer. I would like to see Mrs Dembowskis budget and she how much she has been cut back with expenses and pay increases.

Forget the propaganda that you heard last nite about the State of the Union. Here is the State of the Union. We're in big trouble. We need to get our heads out of the sand. This isn't politics, this is pure economics. If your financial situation was the same as America's, you should make an appointment with a bankruptcy attorney to figure out if there is anything that you can do to avert bankruptcy. You would likely be told that you have to reduce your debt and cut your spending immediately. You would be told that it doesn't matter whose fault it is that got you into this fix. In fact you would probably be told that bankruptcy is your only option. I don't know why the sirens and alarms aren't going off in Washington. Forget the blame game. We've got a Code Blue here and we need to reach for the electric shock paddles. This is no less a threat than a plot by terrorists to blow up Chicago. Financial ruin can bring us down quicker than a bomb. We have to email our congressmen and tell them that we want drastic action NOW! We should declare war on on our trillion dollar debt. We like our entitlements, but we like ice cream too, and when you are on the brink of financial ruin, you have to give something up. We can reduce the financial burden of Medicare, Social Security, and the Defense Budget, or we can look forward to financial collapse, and then we won't have to argue about whether to reduce them or not because we won't have any money to fund them at all. Someday we will look back and think that todays 9+% unemployment were the good ole days. We've got to demand action from those in Washington who are supposed to be representing US. It's not just their problem to fix, it's our problem. They work for us. We've got to tell them not to raise our taxes. Cut our spending. Otherwise, about a year from now, they will raise everyone's taxes, a lot, just to keep this country afloat.

So January 26, 2011 at 6:34am. Did you do your part to help out? Did you stop buying products NOT made in the USA. As long as people keep buying things not made in the USA nothing is going to change.

Anonymous said...

I'd like to by things made in America but sometimes it's hard to find stuff made in America.

We made it through 8 years of George bush we can make it through anything, if we had all the money we have waisted on his unjust war we would be fine. Please don't ever elect a man with an evil agenda again we can't take more of that.

Anonymous said...

Instead of being worried about High school sports,I think we need to focus a little on the safety of the kids at school.

Anonymous said...

I found a new store today called K&R's Funky Junk. Neat little store. It's good to see that new businesses are trying to make a go of it in this terrible economy.

Anonymous said...

8 years of Bush didn't matter. It was the near collapse of our economy, in 2008, under Bush and now with Obama, that matters. Bush gave us a car with the wheels nearly falling off, and then Obama put our car into a demolision derby contest. What did we think was going to happen? Add a Congress made up of politicians with no spine, and now we have trillions in debt. Google "trillion" and try to put it in perspective. Type in a trillion of anything and you will see how big it is. Bush took our country and bumped us off a cliff and Obama has speeded our fall with thousand pound sandbags. You can't argue with gravity. It always wins and we are going to hit the ground sooner than later unless we cut the sandbags and get a massive helium balloon immediately. Instead, Congress passes a massive health care entitlement, and attaches another thousand pound sandbag to our feet. Future generations will consider us the most irresponsible generation in the history of America.

Anonymous said...

Before anyone should even be taken serious about our economy they should know a little about physics. If a car falls off a cliff it will not go any faster no matter how many sandbags you put in it....Obama had the plan to fix the economy and he made it worse. Speaking of small businesses, it is nice to see that some will make it through this but this is not the place for K&G to post and get free advertising. Pay like everyone else does. Also, I suppose you wanted Bush to not protect the American people? Maybe he should have hung out and negotiated with people you can't turn your back on. It takes 3 months to get a mortgage and it is impossible to get a business loan. We will see how bad it will get in the next few years when a lot of people are living off the land and farmers go broke.

If you count one trillion dollars at $1 per second it would take 31,546 years. Since the national debt is over 14 trillion, if you counted the national debt at $1 per second, it would take 441,644 years.

Anonymous said...

I did not see the person talking of the new business as "Free advertising" they did not even mention of its where abouts. And further more what is it of your business to say that ? This is a discussion board put on by WKVI if they thought that someone was getting free advertisement do you really think they would have posted it ?
Sounds to me you have to much time on your hands and need to get a life.
Yeah to the new business wherever you may be located...Hope you are in Knox we do need more places of interest and with the name it does sound that way.

Anonymous said...

Hello everyone I hope you are all having a great day , tired of seeing bashing and negative things posted so thought I would share something nice for a change on here.
Count your blessings today it could be a lot worse tomorrow. Remember life is not a promise for no one so treat each other with a little bit of respect and show your love instead of negatives all the time.
Never do we know when our lives may end !

Blame Obama, Blame Bush, blame the both of them, Blame, Blame, Blame!!

When was the last time you actually did the research on someone you voted for? If you did do you think the majority of voters did too? Or do you think the media and political propaganda influenced most of the votes? I would wager on the latter.
Our country as great as it is has a flawed government. Yes our Democracy is flawed. When we allow Lobbyists to spend money ... I am sorry "Donate" money to our elected officials. We have taken the Democracy and made it a farce! Special agendas and corruption have destroyed our Democracy. It doesnt matter which party you are in. The corruption is rampid. So now what? How do we fix it? Plain and simple we CAN"T!!!
Because the majority are too blinded by party politics or too lazy to worry about politics! So my friends enjoy the ride it is gonna get real bumpy!!

I LOVE my country and am really hurt by the mess the country is in I want it to get better tomorrow but at some point we have to recognize that the system is broken and is no better than the other government systems that have failed.

Until we as the people stop letting the media or political party machines keep us divided on issues. We are going to stay on this path.

As long as one person can say they dont like something and everyone else has to comform to it. Then we will stay on this path.

As long as people let knowing about what is going on in our government take a back seat to their athletic teams. You guessed it. We will stay on this path.

We as Americans are distracted from what we need to be concerned with. To be honest no matter how bad I want it to change, No matter how much I work to get it to change, it seems an impossible task. When do I give up?

Failure to report all the facts. The Friends of the Park has been a 501 (c) 3 since May 2, 2005 with the Internal Revenue Service / Department of the Treasury under section 170 of the IRS Code.

Why didnt' the city attorney ask them before he spouted off that the Friends of the Park were'nt legally a nonprofit? Been one for over 5 years.

EIther you people ran the same national news at 6 o'clock this morning or I'm in the movie Groundhog Day. Should I listen tomorrow or are you going to run it again?

Just because someone is non profit doesn't mean the money is going where it should! I'd like to see the books too before I donated any significant amount of money. How much money do the board members make per year? Why is everything such a big time with this Tony guy?

Some people are never happy. Now you want WKVI to change the news everyday. Why dont you switch over to WGN. They change the news everyday. Some of us like to hear the same news two days in a row, because we might have missed some of it yesterday. Dont pay any attention to them Tom, you just go ahead and play the same news tomorrow. We like it that way.

YES BUY MADE IN AMERICA PRODUCTS WHEN EVER POSSIBLE BUT I AGREE BUT IT IS HARD TO FIND THEM. WITH ALL THE TAXES THE GOVERMENT PUT ON BUSINESSES AND THE UNION WAGES SOME OF THE COMPANYS ARE FORCED TO PAY IT IS NO WONDER THEY CLOSE AND MOVE. DON'T GET ME WRONG I M
NOT BASHING UNIONS BUT WHEN A COMPANY IS IN TROUBLE AND THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LOWER PAY OR BENEFITS BECAUSE OF THE UNION THIS IS WRONG. (EXCEPT WHEN CEOS ARE MAKING THOUSANDS THE COMPANY NEEDS TO CLOSE) THE POSTER IS RIGHT WE NEED TO STEP UP, MAKE THESE ELECTED OFFICIALS DO WHAT THEY SAID
THEY WOULD. IF THEY ARE THAT CONCERNED HOW ABOUT GIVING UP THEIR LIFE TIME HEALTH CARE. OR TAKING A CUT IN PAY HELL THEY ONLY WORK ABOUT THREE MONTHS A YEAR.
MAYBE OF ALL THE LOCAL MEDIA WOULD START PUBLISHING THE OFFICIALS FROM THEIR AREAS BUDGETS VOTING HABITS AND SPENDING MONTHLY. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE THEIR EXPENSE ACCOUNTS AND WAGES AND THAT OF THEIR STAFF. WE WOULD PROBABLY BE SURPISED HOW MUCH MONEY THEY GET FOR SPENDING OURS.
BUY AMERICAN AND BUY LOCAL WHEN EVER POSSIBLE LETS START TAKING CARE OF OUR OWN..

To the person responding about the new business. I didn't add where they are because I don't actually know the name of the road. But, I wasn't trying to give them free advertising.
Our little towns all around us are dying. Its refreshing to see new businesses opening up in buildings that have been standing vacant forever. There is a new one on the corner down a few buildings from O's too.
My post was more about the fact that many new business are struggleing to make it here in Knox and in North Judson dispite a rotten economy.
I happened to like that store because they gave my grandson a very nice coat for a dollar because my son is poor and cannot afford a whole lot.
WE as a small community should support our local small businesses because without them we have no oppertunity for jobs and we have to drive forever to get the stuff we need.
I love how people on here bash everything. I read about bashing the dollar store manager bashing poor kids playing sports, and now you are bashing me because I was impressed with a place that helped out a child in need and as I drove away I noticed many new business trying to make a go of it. Wow. I think you have too much time on your hands.

To answer the question about how much the Friends of the Park board members make, nothing. Not one penny goes to pay anyone. Sometimes, we even pitch in our own money. Everyone that helps out does so as a volunteer. Outside of a few odds and ends, ie, paper, stamps, advertising, just about everything is going to finish the skate/bike park. When it's done, we'd like to work on something else.

As it has been before, instead of complaining about something, why not help out. That's what I'm doing. I decided to stop complaining and do something about it.

Cruise Nite and The Harvest Festival do not get done without the volunteers. So a big Thanks to everyone that helps.

A few weeks ago the Red Cross stopped in the station to drop off a PSA for us to post and read on the air. I noticed that blood donations are way down. They are at critical levels. So we are having a Blood Drive on March 11th here at WKVI. Call me (574)772-6241 starting on Monday to book your spot or go to our website (www.wkvi.com) and look for the blood drive ad on the left or right side, you can e-sign up by clicking the ad.

I think it's sad that our young people have absolutely nothing to do in Knox or Judson.
We have no YMCA, no roller rinks, boys & girls club, nothing.
I ask you, with nothing to do, what are the options for our children other than getting into trouble.
I really think we need something to occupy our young people.
Our community leaders should focus on that for a change.

Anonymous said...

Who would donate land?

Anonymous said...

Great, yet another person who wants someone else to be responsible for what their kids do.

Anonymous said...

Since When is it our community leaders job to entertain your kids ?? The Schools have all kind of programs and sports for them to
join.. Or there is a sports game just about every night somewhere between North Judson Knox or OD for them to go watch. Knox had a roller rink and the owner closed it because he got tired of the kids tearing it up and the parents
using it as a baby sitting service.
Heres a good idea YOU entertain your kids but you might have to get off your butt and do something.
My grand kids play sports in school and they don't really have time for anything else and I really enjoy going to their games to cheer them on.
Have you been to Knox Park there is a real nice skate park and BB courts and tennis courts and hills for sledding when it snows.

I must agree with the comments on the hospital. I can't believe all the negative remarks I have heard over the years about the hospital! It was never meant to be a major surgery or specialty hospital. I am thankful it was there when I had my children and when those children needed stitches and casts! I would guess that a lot of the people making the negative comments would be awfully grateful for the hospital if they needed some urgent care!!!!!

Seriously? in reply to the poster who said there is no need for courthouse security because there is no crime here: What do you call the meth cookers, the child molesters, and the shooters at Bass Lake? We've had murder here as well

Anonymous said...

How about some current news, Police reports over a week old, I want to know what happened in the last few day, not a week ago

Anonymous said...

To the poster who responded about the courthouse.
Methheads or their families are not generally known for killing their accusors.
Large counties like lake and porter county deal on a LARGE scale, you know like 6 or 7 murder cases a week, verses our little 1 or 2 a year, murder cases and other cases that provoke the emotional turmoil that warrants metal detectors and other security precautions. You can go visit that court house at any time and there will literally be hundreds of people there for various reasons. You will be lucky to see 25 people in our court house at ones during normal business hours.
It is for that reason that it is unwarranted. Starke County does not see a volume of "emotional outburst" evolking cases, nor do they have enough traffic to the court house to warrant such a measure.
I came from lake county and have been to the lake county court house for business reasons many times.
I remember the first time I walked into the court house here in starke county, it was like visiting a museum, compared to the larger counties. I am at the court house regularly for business reasons and I can tell you I rarely have seen more than 25 people in there at any given time. So no. I do not think Starke County needs medal dectors.
I do work in the legal field and visit many courthouses that actually need that type of security. Our court house is not one of them.
You do realize that it will mean there will only be one entrance to the entire building that will be open.

Sorry, I didn't realize that the schools provide a spot for every child in the entire school on a sports team. So your right, we don't need recreation for kids because the schools have plenty of sports positions to accomodate the entire school population.
And I have been to the park we were there playing tennis, that only happened once, we drive all the way to judson now to play because all around us gangster wannabes were smoking pot and nobody was doing anything about it.
And FYI my kids are grown with their own families.
It was your children I was looking out for.
I was lucky enough to raise my children in Valpo, where they have plenty of programs for all the kids in the community NOT just the ones involved in sports.
Starke county has a youth problem because there is nothing for the young non sports kids to do. A YMCA would be awesome for this area not only for the kids but for young parents as well since they provide cheap daycare for needy parents.
There are many children who are not on sports teams, who couldn't get on one no matter how bad they wanted to, who need something to do as well.

To Anonymous from Lake County:

Why should we listen to you? Your from a county where there are 6 to 7 murders per week? Is that the minimum requirement for court security? Let's get real. Have you ever heard of people getting divorced and wanting to get violent? How about the emotions involved in child custody? What about terminating parental rights? Would any of those people be a risk to the other people involved in the court case? What if one husband walked over and smacked his wife in the courtoom where there was not one single security officer? Not one! Can you spell l-a-w-s-u-i-t? We have plenty of criminals and people with mental issues. But even if we ignore them, think of all the people who would like to break the neck of the lawyer of their opponent. If that happens, we can count on a law suit that will cost the county taxpayers dearly, especially if we have NO security in this day and age. We would have to lay county employees off to pay for the federal lawsuit. The cost of providing one security person is miniscule compared to a million dollar jugement for being negligent and providing NO security. Consider the monetary risk to the county. Take your Lake County attitude back home. Maybe you should go back as well. we don't need you to tell us how to do things in Starke County.

Anonymous said...

Your absolutely right. You live here and all of a sudden, even though you have probably lived here your ENTIRE life and you have probably NEVER heard of a SINGLE VIOLENT act at the starke county courthouse, you think we need such an intrusive measure.
Have you? Just 1.
Probably not. If you want to pay the salary of a guard and be inconvienced by only having one entrance to the court house that's up to you, but then again you probably never ever GO to the court house so this is really an irrelevant issue for you.
I, on the other hand, have business there quite frequently. So, for me, it is an issue.
If you could support your arguement with even a little fact on this subject instead of juvenile name calling and "what if's".
You are the epitome of the voice of doom, and you have no facts, you know, actual facts that you can cite, to support your arguement. I mean seriously, how has Starke County managed to survive this long without anything happening????
Seriously, you have no actual data to support your reasoning. So, maybe you have some phychic knowledge the rest of us don't have that there will suddenly be crazy nuts trying to kill each other out of the blue, here at the court house????
Unless you can back up your arguement with actual facts, you know, real incidence of actual violence at our court house, or you can prove your an actual psychic who has knowledge that it's coming, you should probably keep quite on this issue that probably doesn't concern you in the least in the first place.
But I will say, I sure do hope that you are the first person who sets off your fabolous metal detector, and you get to be searched by a stranger, I bet when a strange man is running his hands all over your body because you set of the detector, you will think twice about needing it.
It's obvious you have not encountered many instances like this or you would not be so willing to have it.
And I am sure our elderly individuals in our county will not be thanking you for making them walk all the way around the block in the freezing snow, because now you can only get in one door no matter where you have to park, just because you think we need security at a courthouse that has always been peaceful.
