why is it that wkvi doesnt take the time to post wrestling info until days later. not everybody is a basketball fan like you are. these kids work just as hard as the other athletes but do not get recognized. its a shame. when was the last time an area wrestler was named athlete of the week.
1st off, I pray WKVI allows this this. We r brainwashed. It's NOT Union wages, or taxes killing r industry. It's the Fed & State Corporate Fees to start & maintain business. And EVEN WORSE is the Workers Comp Ins. that's killing business, especially when a worker gets hurt & their attorney's deny the worker any rights. It's the same as the mob in the old days stiff-arming businesses. Malpractice Ins is also killing r Health System. And GEORGE SOROS(owner of CNN) is behind most of this. He places bets on the failures of economies, & America is in his sights. But FACT IS, r politicians r making a BOATLOAD of $ from it. How can China's people afford to buy everthing if they're working slave labor? THEY'RE NOT. They make good &, it's just that the Gov't isn't robbing the businesses AS BAD AS AMERICA. R LEADERS R SELLING US OUT!!!! And.....OBAMA HAS SPENT MORE $ THAN ALL THE PREVIOUS PRESIDENTS IN R HISTORY....COMBINED! Yes...COMBINED! The banks aren't giving loans cuz they're sitting on the $. Saddly, many Americans r now investing in the Chinese Yen. Isn't anyone in DC smart enuf to c we need to go BACKWARDS & fix some mistakes, not make NEW mistakes to cover the old 1's. It doesn't take a smooth talkin, college grad rich folk to lead r country...we need someone WHO IS 100% LOYAL, HONEST & HAS UNDYING LOVE FOR AMERICA & WHAT IT STANDS FOR. STOP barrowing from China, set tarriffs on Imports, decrease Fed budget(exclude all cadillac programs for Rep's), as Palosi(& her thieving cronies) need indicted for treason, & WE THE PEOPLE NEED TO SHOW THAT WE AREN'T TAKIN THEIR LYING CRAP ANYMORE! Set up workforces for those on Welfare & Unemployment, like in the Depression(which my Grandpa did when they took his farm), decrease the prison budgets(& evry Gov't worker from Sheriff on up), REPEAL NAFTA,...there's SO MUCH we can do, but none of these SOUL-SELLING politicians have the courage. If r soldiers will die serving r country, then y can't these politicians have the courage to say...NO MORE! I will begin outlining many ideas on YouTube & hope we can get this viral & try to MAKE A CHANGE...cuz I'd give my life to make America better for my kids & America's future.
How can we afford to STILL be the greatest "donator" of $ to the countries in "need" when we r collapsing b4 r very i's? These aren't donations...they're "political pay-offs"..& Egypt is 1 of r benefactors. How's that workin out? So is S.Korea, Pakistan & so many others. Does it seem that those in control r setting us(& the rest of the world) up for failure to help set-up the New World Order? Y do we have foreign troops on r soil? NOTHING that we've been told has EVER been the WHOLE TRUTH. Y r all these countries rioting over similar conditions that r takin place in the US, yet we act complacent bcuz r Gov't keeps extending Unem.Ben & Wel.(only bcuz the US can keep printing $). But wat happens when it runs out or stops? Wats happening in Egypt right now is very critical to not only r Middle East Agenda, but to the safety of r troops, so at this moment, we shud b praying for the whole situation. Peace
Please give obama a chance if all of these right wing advocates would try to help instead of demonstrating and acting like Sara Palin. He would have a chance to help our country.
Obama has had a chance and he has only made things worse!
Just wanted to take a moment and thank Mayor Chambers. The city streets were all cleaned of this morning before the school buses ran and before we had to make our way to work. Its not the big storm yet but if this is a sign of the way he will handle the streets when the big one hits we will be well taken care of. Thanks again Mayor Chambers for doing a great job.
I do not read anything written in text form. I do not even text that way. I think it makes the writer look ignorant.
I don't choose to use the language of text, either, but it is NOT ignorant. It is a highly developed system of language, developed for a speed and ease of use on devices with extremely small keyboards. it allows people to express themselves and to get their ideas across quickly. It is no more ignorant than Morse code or shorthand.
I dont like the whole idea of texting ,facebook, twitter and so on today . I know alot of things are said in print that people would never say to each other in person.
Confusion can be had by writing instead of talking today.
I know of jobs, reputations, and relationships that have been lost or ruined that have all stemed from one of the three ways people like to communicate. Mentioned in the above.
With facebook today everybody has there nose in everyone's business and it is not a good thing. Nothing is ever private and things get taken way out of text most the time. People have feelings that get hurt all the time by things they have read or that are said to them be it by the text on the page or a picture too.
I understand that you have to post something for it to become public but you can not even be a friend of someone and see there comments from others on pictures or a wall of your friend so it is possible for others to see something that may have not been thought they would ever see or read.
The society today is just to see how many feeling can be hurt by bashing one another and it is sad.
So before you post or text be careful what you say as it may come back to haunt you in a way you never thought that it could be possible.
I am speaking from experience and have had things happen to me and my family due to all the ways we communicate out there in the world today.
Best bet is if you want to have a conversation or share a picture maybe pick up the phone and dial or mail the picture . Could save a lot of heartache and trouble in the future.
Yeah Morse Code,we all use that. Texting is okay,in the proper situation.
No, we don't all use Morse code. My point was not that Morse code should be used by everyone. My point was that texting language is not ignorant, just because not everyone uses it. If you can't follow a logical argument without making smart-Alec replies...
First I am the original poster of the word ignorant and no other posts. I stand by what I said which was that it makes the poster "seem" ignorant. I agree that it is comparable to Morse code or shorthand. However, you do not see whole sentences or paragraphs written in either of these. If you're point is important enough to make and you would like others to be able to follow your line of reasoning then you should be able to write a coherent sentence. Morse code and shorthand were/are not used to carry on conversations.
OK...I made the political message with the texts. Reason being, it takes up far less room, as you can then prove a larger point. It doesn't bother me to read, nor offend me, and yes, I can obviously fully spell it out for those that lack a full understanding. But...OBAMA HAS SPENT MORE $ THAN ALL THE OTHER PREVIOUS PRESIDENTS...COMBINED! Can you grasp that? The only reason Unemployment wasn't reported at 20-25% was because of all the Government hiring he was doing. He has established a whole new protective force because of his distrust for the Secret Service, his own new "FBI", and has resourced all the organizations that will help fuel his re-election campaign. He bows and contributes $ to more countries than ever, and does not have the backbone to stand up to Islamic Extremists, probably because he has a spot in his heart for them, which he's obviously showing by supporting the Islamic take-over of Egypt. He is BAILING on Isreal! He has NOT enacted Cap-n-Trade, and he's ONLY made MORE DIFFICULT for our industry to survive. His only obvious agenda is to ensure that all resources will be taken to dish out to the "under-priviledged" minorities...you know...those that don't work & that have lived off Welfare for 3-4 generations. This is NOT what America has ever stood for...this is called Socialism. Can all you politically-correct full grammer reading people who waste time on illogical issues understand the big picture? More than ALL PRESIDENTS COMBINED..IN OUR WHOLE HISTORY...DO YOU GET IT???? HE'S TAKING US DOWN.
Highly developed, Yeah right every little teeny-bopper on facebook uses texting. Most of them aren't too bright.
What does a level one snow emergency actually mean? Why are so many people out-isn't it illegal?
Yeah right . I need a special language to talk to my bff. People that speak pig-Latin think they are cool too. haha. If you write more than two sentences using text than you are ignorant and lazy.
Is anybody else seeing robins? We had seven of them in our crabapple tree Monday eating the little fruit that is still on it. That is a sign of spring right???
Both sides of the "text" Language issue actually have points. For the original poster of the "text" language post, I will admit I agree with the woman who said it makes the writer "seem" ignorant.
I will also say that when I started to read your text format post I just skimmed over it because outside of the "text" environment, ie cell phones, etc.. it's just too time consuming to try to figure it all out. So, whatever you were trying to say was totally bogged down with improper format for this setting. This is a blog format not a text format. For example, you would not write your resume in text format, would you? No, not if you wanted the job you wouldn't. So, there is a time and a place for all types of communication.
I will say, when you posted in the text format I pretty much thought you were a raving crazy person bashing the president. BUT.... when you repost it in the correct format, I actually read your post all the way through and it really made me think. Wow. Scary, it was very informative and actually reached the audience you were targeting.
So, I agree with both sides of this arguement. In this blog format "text" communication can get in the way of your intended message. But, in the world of tiny keyboards on cell phones, etc, it really is an awesome form of communication.
Does anyone else see a pattern here. First government is controlling smoking rights and now it seems they are even telling us what light bulbs we can use!!!!!
The president is after the people again, have you seen that if you sell your home after I think it is 2013 you will be tax over 3 percent for selling that home. I think it is very unfair thing to do and why should anyone have to do that. We worked hard to have our home paid off before we retired so as not to have that bill anymore. It is hard to live on retirement. The country should keep money at home and help us, not all the foreign countries. Yes Obama has not done right by our country.
Good job WKVI on the storm coverage. We really appreciate all you do to keep us informed. You are our lifeline.
I seen the robins to. I thought maybe that storm pushed them up from the south. I dont know but i did see them. ?????????
I would like to thank the snow plow drivers and all the emergency personnel including the police, EMT's, and hospital staff for all that they did during the blizzard. I took a drive around today and amazingly the large piles of snow are already being picked up and moved out of our way.
Also for once I would like to thank the Knox Schools for announcing the closings the night before school so I had time to make arrangements.
Thanks to the local news medias for keeping us up to date including both the radio station and television news crews.
Lastly, thank you to God above for providing us a fresh start this beautiful sunshining cold day.
I suggest some of you take a look around at what is positive about your life and give thanks for it, instead of gripping and arguing all the time. Negative thoughts bring negative actions. Is this really how you prefer to live your life?
Actually, robins do not leave for the winter, only go deeper into the woods. Probably the storm forced them to look elsewhere for food. I haven't seen one yet, but wish I would, then I would be thinking spring!!!!!!
The street department did a great job
cleaning up after the storm. I was pleasantly surprised. A lot of hard work for all of you. You are appreciated!
Good job guys!
To Anon at Feb. 3, 12:28.
You are sooo right. Let's thank God for all that is good. Are we in Egypt right now? No. Are we starving like millions around the world? No. Are we involved in a civil war where there is no law and women are raped as often as breathing air? No. Thank God we live in Starke County, America, in 2011. When we get a blizzard, we have a government that takes care of us, emergency personnel that takes care of us, and a private enterprise system that gives us heat, food, and other necessities of life. If you are complaining under these conditions, why don't you move to any other place on the planet earth if you think it is better there. For me and my family, we wouldn't move for all the tea in China. Thank you to all the good people of Starke County.
"Actually, robins do not leave for the winter, only go deeper into the woods. Probably the storm forced them to look elsewhere for food. I haven't seen one yet, but wish I would, then I would be thinking spring!!!!!!"
Where did this info come from? Robins migrate 38 miles a day and settle around the Mid-Atlantic states. They eat worms and berries, where would they get them in this snow?
I understand having the band play for home football games but have a hard time seeing why the band has to play at the home basketball games. How many of the kids on the teams along with their parents support the band at their competitions.
I agree with the previous poster about how good we got it here. Although we are in a blizzard, most of us have a house with heat. We have electricity and WKVI which tells us what is happening. We have snowplows that run 24 hrs/day because we pay taxes that make it happen. We have a local grocery store with food for our taking. We have clothes or philanthropic organizations who provide clothes for needy to keep us warm. So, can we all agree that we are the most fortunate people on the planet earth? Any person who complains in any way about how we have it here, needs their fingers on their keyboard cut off, and then they might know what it is like to live in Egypt. Ouch.
On the anniversary of President Reagan's 100th birthday, who agrees with this statement? If Ronald Reagan ran against President Obama in 2012, it would be a landslide bigger than when he crushed Jimmy Carter in 1980. Probably the biggest landslide in the history of this country.
a cardboard cutout of Reagan would win everywhere but starke county
Oops! I guess the Audobon Society needs to do some research on robins on the internet!!!! I think I got the information from them in an issue of Birds and Blooms.
Those on REMC electricity do not have to worry about clearing away a path as they now have the meters programmed to be read at their office saving money and the risk of the lives of those who once read the meters. And those of us on REMC know that those who work to provide us electricity have done a good job of keeping our power on during the recent storm. They regularly replace old poles, meters, and even cut out overhanging branches that would have fallen on their lines and taken out power as it did in 1998.
The REMC workers are among those unsung heros who risk their lives to keep our homes warm when it is unsafe to travel. They have families who worry about them when they are called out at all hours to repair broken poles and lines. So let's thank them for their dedication to their job, it is not a job that everybody would or could do!
Wish Mrs. Mary Baughman(the late Bill)Carpenter a Happy Birthday today. She hails from the Bunk Baughman family once known for their great watermelons grown in the California Township area of Starke County. She grew up in Toto. Mary is a nice lady!
Tom, why is the lady announcer so much nicer about ball games? It does not seem to bother her a bit about the singers who donate their time at the big football game! Newspapers say that the singers do not get paid except for the cost of getting there as it gives them a lot public attention--good and bad. When are you moving to Television so we can say, We remember when He was on WKVI, a lot us will remember!
Laura Hardin who works for MPI has a Birthday today, she is past 30.
I think there should be a law about desecrating the singing of the national anthem as what's her name did at the Super Bowl. Also, the half time show was horrible. Go Bears and Colts.
Can anyone remember the name of the restaurant that was acroos from Sears. We use to walk there for lunch when we were in high school in the 60s
I believe that the crowd at all ballgames should sing the National Anthem like we used to do. What a wonderful way to honor our country.
Out here at Bass Lake the plows only make a path for 1lane of traffic not curb to curb so I don't know why people are worried about fences and lawn trinkets
perkins was its first name
perkins was its first name, but in the 60's sears was on main street and perkins on the hwy i dont think it was till mid 70's
Not ALL Robins go South for the winter. They haven't done so for years.
The True Sign of Spring is the Redwing Blackbird.
If there are any left after so many fell from the sky dead, and the government still hasn't told us what they were testing to cause all of the dead birds and fish.
The girls sectional begin last night, I urge people in starke county to support your school. They need your support even if they lose or win. Local sports were the in thing in the 60's when I was in high school. I have been supporting my team all these years and will continue to support them. People rally around for all the teams. Thank You
Proud Fan
I'm not so sure the government is responsible for the dead fish and birds. I think the Bible predicted this way back. Our world is such a mess with immorality, crime and disobedience, maybe the Lord is trying to warn us to change our ways.
INDIANAPOLIS -- Judges in Indiana cities and towns preside over legal matters, but they aren't required to be lawyers, a rule some are pushing to change.
The bill has not yet been scheduled for a hearing. If it does pass, non-lawyer judges would be allowed to finish their terms.

call nancy dembowski if you want to stop this
we can change own ways which will effect our own souls, but the big picture has been writen so it can not be changed.
birds die, rulers come and go, and each has left things alittle worse.
the best thing is to clean up your own house first, then the local government and the schools.
cant raise a child with a crack house near, your child cant be taught by an evil teacher.
if your school board is asleep, wake them up.
if the law is weak, replace them
20 people at a council or school board meeting would be like a super bowl crowd to them.
so stop complaining and start doing something.
i am sure someone will point out my spelling or grammar
but leave my grammar out of it, she was a great lady.
I have two male Huskies missing. They are grey. If you see them, please call 896-0022. Thank you.
The Huskies have been found and returned. Thank you to anyone who was on the lookout.
Just a thought! What if instead of making more laws we made it where you would think twice before repeat offending and I MEAN ON THE REAL ISSUES. Alot of laws are just in place for money to keep things moving.Rapists and murders dont pay money back to the state but speeders and public intox does!
A lot of people complain about how the government in Starke Co. runs. You don't like this person or you think this other person should go. Well, now is your time. Get off your soap box and get down to the courthouse and sign up to run in the city election. There's 1 week to go to sign up for the primaries. Who cares if your a R or D, just sign up or shut up. Now is you time to make a difference.
Harold Weinberg and Rose Weinberg what great people. I worked at Weinbergs in Toto during the 70's andI am sure all the employees will remember receiving our paychecks as we left the building on Monday evening, but during the gas crunch, Harold would also give each employee $20.00 cash for Gas. They were two generous people. The Heart of TOTO will never be the same without them. There were many memories made at the store, with all the Wednesday lunches and all Birthdays celebrated with a party for the whole store. THANKS Weinbergs For THE MEMORIES.
Just a thought! The comment posted was not about starke county only. Thats the kind of narrow minded comments that i was talking about. People wake up and start doing things, not just blaming others we are all at fault and it will take us all to fix the problems. You dont like the schools get involved not just parttime, fulltime. You dont like the time change make calls.Hold the people we elect accountable, I do think they should inform people better before a vote on what they are thinking. You post get on down here and sign-up, I work for a living and dont have the time to serve, unlike others who do. REMEMBER THIS IS JUST A THOUGHT!
all the servers are employed
i dont know anyone elected to any office that was not working
I agree the Weinbergs were very great people . I too worked for them in the 80's and remember many things about Harold. He was a very generous man helping out many people everyday of his life. It was nothing for him to hand us a 50 or 100 after a very busy weekend on our way out the door on Sunday's.
And Marylynn hit the nail on the head when they made Harold the mold was broken. He is very sadly missed by many in the community and he is a person that I will never forget. He did not have employees he had one big extended family . We all had a great time working for him.
Love you Harold my you rest in peace....
Loved the show on Harold Weinberg. look forward to more as weeks go by. You've really improved WKVI with Tom in the mornings, along with Anita. They start my day and make my day. I wish Tom had a song for every day of the week. WKVI should use the motto "somthing for everybody." Harold and Nathan with sports, Lenny with his contests, Ed with Talking, and now Ted looking back. You guys need to write the book on what radio is all about.
I loved going to the Weinbergs store on the weekends. They had the best hot dogs and soda ever.
Does anyone know what recourse I have as a homeowner if my neighbors have junk all over their yard making it an eyesore for everyone? We take pride in our property only to have neighbors with junk all over the yard and driveway. We don't live in the city but in the county.
junk in yard: Call the Starke Co Planning Commission or the Health Dept, it depends which has the authority to help you .574-772-9133 The commissioners
Same problem in the city. People have so much junk and stuff in their yards.
I think Greg Matt is supposed to be on this sort of thing. I imagine if he had some people like this around his house he would not stand for it.
Take a ride around town Greg and then get someone on this problem.
Drive down Mound st. The old rooming house is still a mess and the rest of those houses on that street.Check out some of New york st. check out the north end of Main St.
Spring is coming and I dread seeing what is under all this snow.
Sweet, Greg could be the caped crusader of unkept yards. He could drive around in his Matmobile, after he leaves the Matcave, and talk to the commish on the Matphone. And he could do this all year round and it wouldn't even have to be Halloween. But who would be his sidekick?
Hey I live on Mound Street and not every house on that street is an eyesore....
There is one on the corner of Cleveland and Mound being repaired without a permit thought that was against knox laws. Where is the building inspector when you need him? Should be torn down instead of repaired.Where is the Asbestos siding going?
Greg Matt is not in charge of ordinance in forcement. That is the responsibility of the ordinance officer who reports and takes instructions directly to the Mayor , who is his direct supervisor. If you see something you need to contact the Mayor's office at 772-4553. To ask for the ordinance officer to investigate the complaint.
Eyesores? How about the old laundrymat across from the community center. That is seen by hundreds of people who come for wedding receptions, meetings, etc.How many years will it be borded up making us look like a bunch of lazy hicks who don't care? Maybe thats what we are. Also there are other buildings downtown boarded up like across from the courthouse. That must be ok with our city leaders because nobody does anything about it. Its embarrassing.
I contacted the planning commission about several houses in our area that had junk cars EVERYWHERE. It took a couple of months as they send letters to the people once they have checked out the complaints and they have a certain amount of time to respond. If you have the name and address of the person who you are complaining about that helps, but at least the address should be provided. Cars are required to have a valid license plate or are to be stored out of view from the road. Parked in the back yard but still visible, is not okay. We live in the country...not in town.
The laundrymat CANNOT be torn down. Back when SMH and the city of Knox were going to put the post office and the community center/Dr. Browne's office there, the owner wanted more money. To stop eminent domain from taking over, he got it declared a landmark, because of the brick work. The post office was moved by parkview, Browned went behind the hospital, and that was that.....
Doesn't Knox have a law about boarded up windows in downtown businesses? The laundromat may be a landmark but that doesn't mean that the owner has a right to allow its appearance to be an eyesore. What if some punk spraypaints that the City Coiuncil sucks? Are they just going to leave it alone because its a landmark?
Since we are on the buildings, let's talk about North Judson as well.
The block where the Theater use to be on Lane Street is very much an eyesore.
Those buildings have to be torn down or repaired right away.
Also a Spanish guy has a camper that sets by a house there year around, I know that is a violation.
The house there needs cleaned up and repaired, very slummy looking area.
To the Starke County ordinance person.
Please just drive around town and see these homes, they are very easy to spot. Get letters or notices in the mail to them. Most of us take care of our property and if everyone did this we would all be o.k., but that does not happen.
Lets make this a priority.
I love this town and the people in it.
I read on the website today that NJ=SanPierre marching band is down to 14 members. If the kids want to play isn't there some way they could be incorporated into the Knox Redskin Brigade? Just wondering
People are unbelieveable!! Mind your own yards unless you are getting critters, stink, or having the stuff end up in your yard it isnt your business. If someone owns property they should be able to store their belongings on it! You arent going to get rich off your property.
what good is it to have laws if they aren't enforced. Many towns have law that make it illegal to have garbage and junk in your front yard and boarded up windows in dilapidated stores in their downtown. The city lawyer takes them to court and the owners get fined. I know that it happens in Plymouth. Knox could do the same and when they went to court they would clean up their act. Threatening letters dont work. Either city officials need to do their jobs or we need to vote them out and vote in people who will. Peoople who want to live in a cleaner city should run for office and make that a point of their campaign and I bet they would win by a landslide. People are sick of it.
Does anyone out there think, as I do, there should term limits on school board positions? Also, nepotism and cronism is rampant in county goverment, city goverment and needless to say in the school systems.
In regards to Pat's comments of 1-31-11, I suggest he or she should take a course in English and leave economics alone. Also, the word " barrow" means a castrated hog. Therefore, the statement should read"stop castrating hogs from China" So much for English 101 today

here we go again,
someone misssspelled somethang, arent we special.
no matter what you say i am sure yours stinks too
Why is the Gov't making all these huge cuts in many beneficial programs, when they have yet to reduce(or quit) all of the aid being sent abroad? Shouldn't Americans come 1st? It is OUR TAX DOLLARS. They've bailed out all these Corp.'s, funded countless wars, bought all the foreign allies they can(which you CAN NOT buy friends), & Obama's grown our Gov't expotentially, yet those with the least are sacrificing the most. I feel as if it's not even a Gov't of The People, By The People or For The People. Is the word PRIORITIES even in the dictionary anymore?
WKVI reported that the Marriage Protection Amendment passed the House. I didn’t hear how our State Rep voted. So I looked it up online. The bill to make marriage between a man and a woman passed 70 – 26. Representative Dembowski voted against the bill. I remember during the campaign that she said she was pro-family. We got lots of mail from her asking for our vote with smiling pictures of her grandchildren. So me and my husband voted for her. Now we find out that when she gets to Indianapolis she is against our family values. She mus be one of the most liberal people down there if she wont vote for this. I hope WKVI will interview her about her vote so she can explain it to the people from Starke County who put her in office.
There was more to that bill than just the definition of marriage. Maybe she voted against it because it also denied any form of civil liberties to same sex couples. If you still disagree with her vote that is fine. Most of the time people only take the time to hear or read about the main point of a bill when there are many other parts of it.
Why are we still paying taxes like income, etc.they were only supposed to be temporary but these taxes are what is helping politicians get richer, aid other countries and fund wars at our expense. I always thought "Charity Began at Home".
Yes, I too, am disappointed in how Mrs.Dembowski voted on the "family" bill. I think, that if I ever ran, or served, an office, that I'd have a website set-up for as much direct communication with the constituents. And though I'd hope it'd be respectful, I'd also hope to know & understand how people feel about the important issues at hand. I also believe that important, life-changing bills should be placed on the ballot, for the people to decide, just as the Property Tax Cap was. So Mitch, why wasn't the Toll Road sale on there as well? Sp tired of politicians choosing to live in the "grey" areas. Life ISN'T a grey area, for every choice has a line. The problem is that we've compromised our ethics, and that line is no longer straight.
I think it's time for narrow-minded people to wake up...a "family" does not have to be defined by a man and woman. I'm glad Nancy voted the way she did. I believe in civil liberties for ALL people. Now I hope she votes to defend public education as well.
Does "narrow-minded" mean "old views"? For what I see is a total compromise of our values, that "were" based on the Bible. Right & Wrong does NOT ever change, it's only how WE view WHAT is right or wrong that has changed. People of same-sex unions choose to be together, but they have no right to change the definition of marriage, the sanctity of it, or to view it on the equal level as was distinguished & purposed by God in The Bible. But for tax purposes, so be it...give unto Ceasar what is Ceasar's.
Dembowski can vote anyway she wants. Just dont try to con us to get elected. I too got the mailers that said she was pro-family and everyone knows that is a litmus test for conservative values. If she wants civil unions or same sex marriages then she should tell us before election day. That way the People can decide whether to vote for her or not. She always says that she listens to us. Well I would like to see a poll of Starke County voters on the issue of civil unions for gays and lesbians. SHe can support it all she wants but I bet only a small minority of her constituents agree with her. It doesnt make her a bad person, but she should have been honest about her position before election day.I too hope that WKVI will interview her about her vote.
One of our politicians who was making 174,000.00 annually is going to retire with a pension for life 138,000.00 annually and health benefits. What a pity he has to sacrifice when he retires. We wonder whats wrong with our country this is just another example.Something is wrong with this picture.
I,too, would like to hear Nancy Dembowski interviewed on WKVI. I am old fashioned and believe that family DOES mean man, woman, and children. Gay people can do what they please, but they shouldn't try to infringe on values that were set many, many years ago!!!! I for one, am sick of people feeling that anything is alright if it feels right to them. WRONG!!!! There were laws and commandments made long ago to be obeyed. Too bad we are not doing so.
That is what is wrong with politicians today; they do vote how they want and forget they are representing the PEOPLE!!!!!
Instead of using this website to complain, I just want to wish the Culver girls the best of luck and I really hope they make it all the way to state and WIN!!!! GO CULVER!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes the old views are outdated views. It is not just "what FEELS right", it is what IS right. What if we were still holding on the the same values or views that upheld slavery? That was a sacred right to many people, so much so that our country went to war over it.
Sometimes old views are old and in the way.
Reading the Pulaski Co. police reports, I noticed some of the people arrested are classiffied as weekenders. What is a weekender?
I'm talking laws that were in the Bible. There were slaves in the Bible, but this wasn't against GOD'S laws. I am speaking of the laws that ARE against GOD'S laws and teachings.
Can someone help me understand please - you plead guilty to maintaining a common nuisance (a class D felony and get 18 month home detention and in exchange they drop the charges of dealing meth - a class B felony.....does this make sense to anybody else? It doesn't to me. What am i missing?
Filing for city of knox offices has come and gone. Looks like all the complainers stayed home. Nothing will change unless someone steps ups. Hopefully the republicans can get some people to file for city offices after the primaries, otherwise we'll all have to read the complaints again for the next four years again. Sometimes real people can make a real difference. You don't have to have a name or a lot of money. Just be who you are.
A weekender is a convicted offender who only spends time in the county jail during the weekend. This allows them to be out of jail during the work week.
You'd probly drop a B felony if someone else fesses up to it.
Nice win for knox redskin boys on senior night....way to go
Senior night is this coming weekend for Knox.
Still waiting for Ms. Dembowski to tell us why she voted against the bill that would make "marriage" only between a man and a woman. People I talk to can't beleive it. I think this is pretty critical to her political career.
WKVI's former employee Tony Ross and the mayor of Plymouth were very brave to be tasored, so why not have the newest morning man Tom and Knox's mayor be tasored to describe what it feels like. After all when Tom was interviewing the mayor the first time the radio went off the air. Knox's radio man should be as brave as the Plymouth radio's man.
All of us would really like to have the feeling described to us so we can avoid getting into a situation that would get us tasored. It would be educational for all those in our community!
Isn't wonderful that the people of Wisconsin have the courage to stand up to their governor. It would seem illegal to remove a person's hard earned pensions. More power to those would refused to vote on a very serious issue.
In America we have the right to reject peacefully those who get elected and push foolish laws that hurt the middle class! And nobody has died during the protests, so maybe Wisconsin is staging their own reverse Tea Party! So everybody should exercise their right to vote out bad office holder during the next election.
House lawmakers approved a Continuing Resolution that proposes to cut $1.3 billion in funding for Community Health Centers from the President’s FY2011 request, a move that will effectively eliminate affordable health care services for millions of Americans. The measure was approved by a vote of 235-189
CAN WE AFFORD TO LOSE ANOTHER BUSINESS IN STARKE COUNTY?
Community Health Centers are projected to save $122 billion in total health care costs, generate $54 billion in economic activity, and create 284,000 new full-time equivalent jobs by 2015.
My question is, why WKVI is not making this news to the county?
WKVI's former employee Tony Ross and the mayor of Plymouth were very brave to be tasored, so why not have the newest morning man Tom and Knox's mayor be tasored to describe what it feels like.
UUhhhhh......NO!
We just voted out the bad office holders last election. Next election we will vote out some more.
have you listened to plymouth radio, they deserved to be tasered.
what next do meth on air,
stick to pumpkin chunkin and other fun, non stupid things
Thank you to Mayor Rick Chambers and his committee for sponsoring the Big Band Dance. Thanks too,to Tom Berg for the publicity.Friends who came from Portage, Crown Point, Hobart, etc. commented on what gracious people live in Starke County and how welcome they felt and are looking forward to coming back for the next dance. Sentimental Journey is a class act and what great music. Thanks again to everyone for a most enoyable evening. Elizabeth
It seems funny to me that people start quoting the Bible when they feel it serves their purpose. Well lets take a look at the 10 commandments: Why do you think that some important moral rules to follow were left out? Like: thou shalt not molest children, thou shalt not abuse or rape another individual...and I'm sure you all can come up with some more moral rules that should be listed. I find it really strange that everyone keeps saying God created Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve...Don't you think this would have made the commandment list? Well guess what all you bible thumpers? Re-visit the 10 commandments, it doesn't mention it. The bible can be interpreted in many different ways. Makes me wonder what Christianity's agenda is all about. Do yourselves all a favor and do a little research on what bible scholars have to say...not just what your minister says on Sunday morning. You are just believing what you are told, like little sheep. I used to wonder how people could let themselves become brainwashed? But that is exactly what religion is. Brainwashing. I don't mean to sound blasphemous because I know you all will think that I am, and my religious family and friends would think the same way. It was very hard for me to even communicate these things, because I too was brought up thinking what the minister says on the pulpit is the "Gods honest truth". Hellfire and brimstone is what I got out of religion...I never remember hearing anything about the loving and forgiving Father we have. After having children of my own, now I can see the truth! I would never condemn my children to a lake of fire for doing something wrong. I love them unconditionally! The powers that be have an AGENDA people...how do you control a person? FEAR! So keep that in mind the next time you attend church services. If you are open minded enough to watch the documentary "Religulous" please watch it. It really does bring up questions we all want to ask but were afraid to.
whats your point?
is the school board meeting still on for tonight
Ted Hayes enjoys interviewing people of Starke County, so who better than a Starke County born teacher and radio man who works in another county. However he and his family have a long history here in Starke County, we should all be proud to hear Tony Ross speak for himself in his former hometown. Tony is remembered as one of our success stories!
Knox's population may be declining, but we still lead the nation, per capitia, in junk automibles on the road: 1 headlight, 1 taillight, no muffler, tailpipe draging, duct taped windows and fenders, doors, and hoods and the list goes on and on. Indiana used to have a vehicle inspection law. It's time to reinact it
Harold W was NOT born in Starved County...Ms Dembowski claims to be pro life...check her voting record. Wake up voters and listen and read.
I would like to know why you don't post all of the news for Starke County. What happened at Wooden Nickle on Saturday?
I am a Christian and proud of it. If you have read the Bible,as I have, you would see that it DOES mention these abominations. Not in the ten commandments, but in other chapters of the Bible. I feel sorry for you if you don't believe what preachers teach from the pulpit. My minister DOES preach that our GOD is a loving and forgiving GOD. Maybe you went to the wrong church if all you got out of it was fire and brimstone!!!!
All I can say is WOW. Criminal Justice students beware, when your professor sends you out to survey police officers, you will get no help from the Knox City Police or from the county cops either.
I am studying for my Master's degree in criminal justice. I asked my husband to take the survey to the police station and see if one of the officers would fill it out, because I could not make it up there. My professor assured me that they would be more than happy to help. Ya, right.
After they made my husband wait 30 minutes at the sheriff's departmant, a Knox's city cop came in and told him they called him because not a single county officer was willing to put his name on the survey. The city cop refused to do it as well. They said they would do it if they didn't have to put their name on it but unfortunately, I need a name on it to prove I talked to an actual police officer.
The scary part is, the survey was on the Bill of Rights and Due Process. Something you would think police officers would know all about.
My professor couldn't believe it and neither could I. I finally got a police officer from Hobart to fill it out. He was more than happy to help.
It is really scary to think that not a single officer, city or county, was willing to test their knowledge about something that has such an impact, not only on their career's but on every single person they arrest and how they go about arresting them. I just can't believe it.
I am just starting in my Master's Program and I really hope there are no other projects that come up that require the knowledge of a police officer from my area, because apparently, they have no knowledge of the Bill of Rights or Due Process, and they are totally unwilling to help students.
To answer your question, Mutt, the owner of the Wooden Nickel, took his own life over the weekend. Viewing will be Wednesday between 4 and 8pm at O'Donnell funeral home in judson and the funeral will be the day after at 11am at the catholic church in Judson
Starke County very likely leads the state in loud mufflers. Listen and learn.
Our society has TOTALLY deteriorated since the demise of the American family. When Welfare was introduced, thus "rewarding" families of "broken homes" & NOT rewarding families for fathers & mothers that persevere. Thus also in 1962 when the Bible was taken out of public school, we saw IMMEDIATE increases(10 fold), of teen age pregnancy, drug use, drop-out rates, crime, divorce, etc. The facts are in plain black & white. Would love to see a leader with the courage to expose this, society acknowledge it & back changing it. It's very sad, when coaching many youth sports through the years, that at least 3/4(or more) of the kids are from broken homes. Fact is, America has DE-emphasized the importance of Family, Marraige between a Man & Woman, Comittment, Responsibility & Accountability, thus the evolvement of a society in shambles with no Biblical morale values.
In response to the idiot that is complaining about the cars some people are driving, have you ever thought that maybe that is all that they may have to get around in. If it is plated and insured then it is legal. Some people in the county are not as privileged as you i guess. Its because of people like you lower middle class people cannot get ahead. CAR INSPECTIONS are you fricken kidding me!!!!! You must be getting ready to campaign for the next election or something. If the truth is known your probably not even from Starke County!!!!!!!
You are right, I am not from Starke County.
I was born and raised in Hammond.
At least we get our vehicles checked for exhaust leaks.
In Starke County you don't get your vehicles checked at all.
Ia anyone else sick of the beatle break in the morning? Don't get me wrong I like the beatles but I don't need to hear them at the same time every morning. How about a ZZTop break or a Neil Young break something different please even an Elvis break would be good. Thank-you
do you still work in hammond
or just complain about starke county and state how great "lake" county is
I'm told it's pointless to argue on the internet. But here goes:
I can appreciate that some people don't like the Beatles. They aren't a part of our regular playlist, so that's why I feature them for about 5 minutes in my 5 hour show.
The Beatles, love 'em or hate 'em, continue to influence music and musicians to this day.
ZZ Top, Neil Young, and Elvis..not so much. I know some might think it's sacrilege to say, but this is a discussion right?
Is there an Elvis 'Rock Band' video game? Did ABC TV commit hours of prime time programming to the story of how ZZ Top got together?
OK, so Neil Young got mentioned in a Lynyrd Skynyrd song, you got me there. Elvis DOES have a video slot machine, too.
I have this saying posted on my facebook page: All music is an experience of the soul. Whatever your tastes are, enjoy it to the fullest.
I truly believe that.
I picked the Beatles because they touch my soul like no other group or genre does.
Yes I enjoy all types of music,(Swing anyone?) but as far as I'm concerned, there are The Beatles, then there's everyone else.
Again...the feature is only 5 minutes long, unless I play "Hey Jude", you can tough it out, right?
Your thoughts?
Hey Hammond. Did you ever think that the reason Lake County has emission test are to compensate for all the steel mills and factories belching filth into the atmosphere.I might be wrong but I think you can be pulled over and ticketed in Starke County for faulty lights, loud mufflers etc.So stay in Hammond if you don't like it here.
Hammond is a slum. Why did you move here if its so great? I know why but they didn't let me post it. At least we know that are vehicle has an exhaust leak and we don't need to pay someone to tell us that. Actually most of us own tools and have the knowledge to work on a vehicle. That's probably why the cars are still on the road. You are pathetic and need to move back where you came from!!!!!!! QUICKLY
On the topic of junk in yards and boarded up buildings. I love the comment someone made about minding your own yard. The thing is, I mind my own yard because when I look out the window I would like a pleasant view and I have what is called pride in my home and neighborhood. If the neighbors around you don't at least attempt to keep their property clean and " junk" free then guess what happens to everyones property values? Not to mention, who wants to have company over only to hear them say, " what kind of neighbors do you have". Oh, and if you keep " storing" more and more items you will most definitely get critters and stink. I say stop a bad habit before it starts. As for the boarded up homes and businesses. I have found that some of the laws put in place years ago end up protecting slumlords and it takes forever to get through the red tape. How about instead of putting down our city officials we call out these property owners. I know for a fact many of them live out of town and the buildings are probably a tax write off for them. They don't see it so who cares. Hey losers, take care of your property! If you don't want to take care of it sell it or tear it down. You should be ashamed, how about we post some of the owners names! Let's find out who these people are. I think we have a right to know who they are and why they won't repair their buildings. Maybe they will tell us all on this blog just what they intend to do with their eyesore!
Let's see, born and raised in Hammond and now living in Starke County. Mmmmm. How about this. "LESS GOVERNMENT MORE FREEDOM". If you want pollution control, move to California. Even quicker, move back to Hammond.
I,for one,LOVE the Beatles and the Beatle Break!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think your stuck in 1969. Half that band is dead. There aint going to be no reunion.
Tom, the Beatles? Really? Didn't they stop playing in 1972? What about the Monkeys or the Partridge Family? They are a little more modern.
Ya know, if Mitch had just raised the Toll Road rates to what they presently are, we would've been far better in economic standing. Rates are now 3.5 times what they were previous the sale, so why didn't Mitch contemplate that option...instead of the quick & easy $? Sad that non-American capitalists can fore see that far in the future & are now reaping the profits, that our tax $ paid to build & maintain for decades. We were so close to having it paid-in-full, but instead, Mitch bailed. And now, with his new proposal, he'll have non-union scabs taking the jobs. Is that why he wants to build the Illiana Tollway...to build with American $ then sell off again?
GO FOR IT WISCONSIN, BREAK THAT UNION... IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY THEM AND THEY DON'T WANT TO REDUCE THEIR PAY LAY THEM OFF AND SEE IF THEY CAN LIVE ON UNEMPLOYMENT. AND FOR THE ELECTED OFFICIALS THAT WALKED OUT OF THE STATE HOUSE THEY ALL SHOULD BE TAKEN OUT OF OFFICE TODAY !!!!!!
IF I WALKED OUT ON MY JOB WOULD I STILL HAVE IT I DON'T THINK SO.
I BET THEY STILL GET THERE PAYCHECKS FOR DOING NOTHING THEY ARE ELECTED TO STAND UP FOR US NOT RUN AND HIDE WHEN THINGS DON'T GO THEIR WAY. THATS SOMETHING MY 2 YR OLD DOES. GROW UP GET BACK TO WORK OR GET OUT....
Vehicles in Lake county have to be emission tested because of the enormous amount of pollution all the mills produce.
I moved here from Lake County. I don't mind the half baked old beaters all over the road, I think it adds a certain sense of freedom from government invasion. I actually saw a car driving down the road the other day without a hood. It was awesome.
I understand why places like Lake County need emission laws but we have no large factories here ruining our air and its good to see that here in this county, you can be poor without being harassed by the police or local government. So I say, if you don't like it, don't live here.
I for one love it here, and I was born and raised in Lake county. When I go there now to visit family, I can't get out of there fast enough. The people drive like they are insane and the cities like Gary and yes, Hammond, and also Black Oak, don't seem safe to drive through during daylight hours let alone live there.
So you go on back to your crime infested smog choked Lake county. We will stay right here and enjoy the freedom living in this county gives us. And we will smile as we drive our beaters down the road. Gotta love small town living.
When I find myself in times of trouble,
Mother Mary comes to me...
Speaking words of wisdom, Let it be.
I see that Hammond didn't have anything to say. Maybe he or she is packing up and leaving.
WHERES NANCY???? What a chickenPOOP
Stand up for what you believe if that is letting the unions run you like they do dont run away , 30 years ago President Reagan fired all of the air traffic controllers well it is time that the voters fire all of the striking state reps!!!
To the person righting about the boarded up buildings, I think it is ridiculous that you seem to think that the city officials are not to blame. Their the ones that made the laws and ordinances with the red tape. Its actually pathetic that they can tell a person to clean up around their property, but can't tell building owners of down town to put in some windows or tear down the eye sores completely. The city and county officials are quick to hand out fines to some people but others are left alone. THEY ARE TO BLAME! It sounds like you are from out of town possibly HAMMOND.
Oooppps, I meant writing not righting
The Beatle break is a great morning feature. Love it!!
BTW, isn't it time to turn off the anonymous posts. If people don't have the stones to put their name next to their comments, then their opinion doesn't count. I don't read any anonymous posts....
I love the beatles!!!!! Please keep the beatle break! love it!!
I agree with chris
Let's do a survey. How many people have moved from Lake Co. to Starke Co. in the last 10 years? How many people have moved from Starke County to Lake Co. in the last 10 years? Forget the survey. I think we know the answer. Nuff said.
This is a change of subject, but I was so disappointed that Todd Wallsmith was not the asst. prosecuter. What happened. He is such a fine hard working young man. And no I am not his mother or relative. I read what it said in the paper but it does not seem to make sense. Mr.Bourff please explain it to me. Todd I hope you run for yourself next time.
Chris, why dont you get off your high horse and get some stones of your own? Who are you? We need first name, last name, and telephone number. Then we can call you to confirm that you wrote the comment. Otherwise shut your pie hole. Michaelene, you can love the Beatles all you want but why dont you just buy a cd and turn it up in your house. Why do we all have to suffer with Ringo coming out of our radio?
I love discussion boards.
Actually I think I would re-name them, Venting/Arguing Boards instead. A little more descriptive as to what you're going to find. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just some people can't take constructive criticism as well as others. Or rather, can't understand or comprehend any other view but their own. Whatever happened to embracing differences and learning new approaches?
**The whole issue with the "garbage, car lots on personal property"... I get both views. The ones that tend to have that argue, "it's my property, I choose to do what I want with it." But what they fail to understand is that their "clutter" trickles onto the neighbors and therefore LEAVES their property. IE. rodents living under the cars (they don't stay under that car ALL day and night, they move and probably wouldn't "live" in that spot if the car wasn't located there- so when they move around they come into my yard and destroy my garden), trash piled up (correct me if I'm wrong, but wind does tend to blow things around, therefore LEAVING your property and flying onto mine. Now that piece of McDonald's leftover wouldn't be laying in my yard, had you done the responsible thing and placed it in a concealed garbage can. Now does that make more sense as to why it's an issue? It's not just YOUR property anymore, it's including mine and if I wanted garbage laying in my yard, I would go uptown, get a bunch of bags, leftover food, pop cans and throw them in my front yard myself.
**Nancy's vote. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can always call your State Reps or contact their offices and speak with them directly. I've done this countless times, not with Nancy but others. Since they are public appointed officials, it is their responsibility to listen to and discuss views with the citizens of their communities. I think it is also a responsibility of local media to report on issues, esp if you create a "discussion" board and see an outcry of concerns from local residents to look into completing a news story regarding that issue. So, if WKVI staff does not keep up with this site as often, then maybe you visiting the site and discussion board should contact a reporter for the station and find out if they are looking into this and developing a story? Just a suggestion.
I couldn't agree more though with some things needed to be done to the local abandoned businesses. IE that old Laundromat. OMG, such a terrible location. Considering our Community Center is one of the only places out of town visitors come to (weddings, parties) that sets the tone for our entire town. How in the world are we ever going to have economic business growth when potential investors see nothing but abandoned run down buildings? That doesn't scream growth, that screams recession and if I were looking to start a business, I'd be looking elsewhere. Anyone visited downtown Valpo lately? Lincolnway just north of the University was such an ugly eyesore for so long. Now is it turning into a trendy new area and will create new business, just watch.
On the comment about junk vehicles, I have to say I am one who posted about complaining due to neighbors with multiple (as many as 30) junk vehicles parked on their property. I actually had people coming to my place of business asking when they got permission to start another junk yard on my road. They had not...it was just some guy putting more and more vehicles in a field basically. We have had issues with house fires, drug arrests, etc. and have seen our neighborhood grow and deteriorate significantly since we moved here in 1996. I am tired for calling the cops because I have found yet another meth lab stashed in my woods near the road. I am tired of the fire trucks racing down my road to put out another house fire...most have been deemed arson.
There are limits. I can understand if a car gets in a wreck or breaks down and needs major repairs that cannot be done right away being parked in your yard for a while until it can be taken care of. When you have SEVERAL or MANY cars sitting there, that is an issue. It attracts rodents and undesirable activity from what I've seen. We have to be responsible for our own property but it is prudent to also be aware of what is going on in our neighborhoods.
As far as Todd Wallsmith, there was an article on the WKVI site at one point that indicated he could not take the position due to having many past clients that he had defended and now would have to be involved in prosecuting...conflict of interest.
I think it would be better if wkvi let the people vote on what kind of music is played. How about RAP???? Just joking but country music would be better than what is on now. Just saying. What do you think Tom B.?
Didn't Mr.Bourff have any clients that he had maybe defended? this is not a new problem.
Judge Hall might have had people before him that he might have defended.
Didn't Mr. Bourff know all this during his campaign?
Just asking. Something does not seem right about this.
As for Todd Wallsmith, I think it was publicly stated that he could not take that position due to the fact the Starke Circuit Judge Kim Hall is Todd's uncle. Therefore he cannot try cases in front of him and there were several cases left from the former prosecutor that had to be tried before Judge Hall.
Hey, I admit that the 60's are my very favorite years and the Beatles were a large part of that!!!
There's so much going on here today...I too love the discussion board. One of the things I love about it is that I can express my opionions anonymously. That's right...I want my anonymity! I don't want people throwing rocks threw my windows because they don't like my opinion. So, if you don't read any anyomous posts, or really not reading anything on here. Jeez.
Next, the boarded up business...I don't love them either, but I'd love to know where the money is supposed to come from to get rid of them, or put new businesses in them. No one seems to be addressing that.
Finally, the WKVI music format. Some people never fully recovered from the switch from all country. I for one wouldn't even listen to that. I'd like all eighties all the time, but that isn't going to happen. Like the saying goes: you can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all the people all the time. It is just fine how it is.
O.K. now everybody is complaining again maybe they are encouraged to use this discussion place by the WKVI prerecorded messages. What is so wrong with suggesting tasoring? It was only an suggestion to achieve a humorous reaction from Tom and he never fails to entertain but he has improved and does not get so upset at unreasonable suggestions any more and it gets him off the talk of sports constantly. The suggestion was inspired by the movie "Hangover" which shows the results of getting so drunk that you steal a police car and the police take you and two buddies to a classroom where one policemen tasored the first man, and two children--a girl and a boy get to tasor the other two. It is not a particularly family friendly movie with nudity and profanity but maybe children need to see what happens to adults who get drunk and use drugs. We all know that Starke County and all of the other counties in this state and other states have ongoing drug and drinking problems that support the local court system, lawyers and even the stores that supply it and then sell drugs to help them over come the drinking problem. Nobody can legislate good moral behavior but adults ought to know how to behave without having laws to tell them what to do. We tried probition in the past and it only made people go unground and sell it any way so why not Tax liquor like cigarettes. Liquor kills more people than smoking does, so let them smoke in the taverns maybe a person has a death wish and already know that both kills lots of innocent people.
Is WKVI going to interview Nancy Dembowski in Urbana, IL? How can you get paid by the government to work and leave the state at the same time?
She is a legislator and the Indiana legislature is in session. I think that the newspaper or radio needs to find out where she is and if she is accepting a paycheck that she is supposed to be earning in Indianapolis. She was elected to represent us in Indianapolis, not Urbana Illinois. Someone needs to get to the bottom of it.
my gas bill is due so i will be hiding out in michigan (IL is too full) so take that NIPSCO.
PS. someone please go feed my dog, get my mail and most of all please foward my food stamps and my wontwork check please.
oops i misspelled forward, so now no one will take me serious.
taxation without representation?
think about it
Oh, the Old Golden Days in 1955 before radio came to Starke County, my school bus driver was my neighbor and one very bad day, he went around the block and nobody sent their children to school due to the snow, he just went back home too and stayed there. In those days parents got to make decisions for the safety of their children. Roads were bad too without the expensive snow plows to clear them, how did we ever survive without the modern radio announcers to warn us not to drive in extreme bad weather and children did not have to be bused to Knox for their first eight years. Some how people got educated even during the worse winter days.
About the Weinberg family, I seem to remember Rose Weinberg telling me that she and her two brothers--Harold and Joey were all born here in Starke County. Their father David was from Chicago. How sad that when Rose died sick that the radio never mentioned her being the last of her family to die. When Rose was well, she helped a lot people and yet she died with lots of them owing her money. The Weinberg family built their business and shared lots of their income with the people of Starke County. They even bought clothing for children who needed school clothes, they were not selfish people, they gave back to our community. Lots of us appreciated the entire family, it is sad that their building is just a shell now.
Adam, I am not from Hammond, sorry. I have lived in Starke County all of my life. The more I think about it...you are right!! But, I still think these losers owe us an explanation! Have a great day!
In regards to the Beatles;nobody said anything about a reunion. I just love their music and just because half of them are gone,we don't have to do away with their music!!
If you watched the South Bend television news tonight, you saw our local Legislator Nancy D. on their news, she is out of the state with the rest of her friends.
It is too late for the radio to get her opinion, but they may have today as I did not listen to the radio all day today! She did get her public career stated on WKVI, so maybe Tom, Lenny or somebody else might consider a career serving our state. Nancy won one election by one vote, so anybody can win just remember to vote for yourself every vote counts!
To the person who is complaining about Wisconsin are you crazy? We need unions the right to work bill benefits no one. People want to complain about the President and Democrats well now that we have more republicans in office look at the gas prices. And they statred going up as soon as the elections were over. The stock market is dropping again and it all can't be blamed on the middle east. Republicans only want the rich to get richer and the poor to be poorer. So I say good for the Democrats for walking out and way to go members of the unions.
It's pretty obvious that WKVI blocks IP addresses of anyone who asks or blogs political or community views that differ from their own. That's a real show of respect to our Bill of Rights. That's called Communism...in case you didn't learn that in school. But then...our media across the nation has learned to twist the news. i.e. CNN & it's owner George Soros. He is the biggest cancer to the USA, as he's the biggest manipulator of the media, & is a deviant to the world. But what makes WKVI any different on a local level if they're screening the blog to their own personal views?
How is the determination made to delay schools? Does someone actually drive around and check on road conditions or do they just simply look out their windows to make the decision? There was a former superintendent who was up and out checking road conditions for himself at 4 a.m. Does anyone in the present administration do that? If WKVI would check on this and give their listeners an answer it would be appreciated. Thank you.
Beaure of Motor vehicles . Daniel is doing a great job of keeping Indiana employed . As of March first the Knox license branch will only be open Monday , Wendesday and Friday and the Winamac Branch on Tuesday and Thursday. Now this is what I call helping the people of our state. Eliminate jobs eliminate services . Just another way for Daniels to get tighter control on all of us . Take our money then take our jobs. Thank God only 22 months to go .
That's right, blame the Republicans who have been in office for less then 2 months. People are complaining about them sleeping in their offices. Oil prices are up because of the trouble in the Middle East. That just happens to be where most of OUR oil comes from. If the Democrats (from last year and years before) and President would allow the US to drill for oil and build refineries in the good ole USA, then we wouldn't have to rely on foreign oil. We'd also have people working and most likely most of those jobs would be union jobs (who support Democrats). Drill Baby Drill! You just can't buy me love.
Really you want to blame republicans for gas prices. Are you really that out of touch and aren't up on what is going on in the world? Oil per barrel went over a $100 yesterday, have you seen the unrest in the middle east? You think that maybe possibly that could have something to do with it? Anyone who blames the dems/reps for the rising gas prices are out of touch. As for the Wisconsin/Indiana unions, public service unions should not be allowed. The union leaders should not be able to extort money from the taxpayer as they are allowed to do now. You want to join a private sector union then go for it, if that is your choice. If not then they should not be able to force you or discriminate against you because you do or don't pay their dues. I have grown up in a union household and I would love to be part of one, however, not every union is a good union and you have to be careful. If teachers are that worried about losing their bargaining rights then lets make a compromise and get rid of tenure. They can bargain as long as they are able to be benched as private unions are, because in the unions I am used to if you don't make the grade you sit the bench or are let go completely. Let's be fair if you are doing such a great job, get rid of your safety blanket and compete like the rest of the people who are union or even non-union for that matter.
I read a wonderful post about many years ago when the weather was terrible. The writer said that the bus went around the block and no one sent their children out to get on the bus, so the driver simply went home for the day. The writer encouraged us to make our own decisions regarding the safety of our children going to school when the weather was bad.
I just wanted to point out to the writer that in current times, children can only miss a certain amount of days before the school reports them to the authorities, taking away the parents rights to decide whether or not to send the child to school during poor weather.
I personally thought it was way to slick not to call for at least a 2 hour delay this morning, but Knox schools opened on time. The decision was made and Knox parents had to suck it up and brave those icy roads, or face the judge down the line. It just doesn't seem right to me, and I wondered how the rest of you felt about it.
So is this the new thing in our democracy? When the people vote your party into the minority you leave the state of Indiana? I agree with the poster that said that they shouldn't get a paycheck if they aren't at work. My boss wouldn't pay me if i ran to Illinois. I can't believe Nancy. Have some courage. Stand up to Pat Bauer. Debate the issues. Don't run and hide. Elected officials acting like little children.

I am with the person who was talking about the kids safety .
I have a child that from time to time suffers from headaches and stomach aches , I know that it is nothing serious as I have had the child checked out from a doctor. so I do not run to the doctor just so that i can get a doctors excuse for the school they are not worried about the health or safety of the child they are only worried about the lose of money. For that child not setting behind a desk all day.
I know where my child is when these things happen and I am not just some bum letting the child sit at home for the day. But to the school it is the end of the world. And they send there little paper with threats of turning you into welfare.
To me they are not learning much to start with so what is a day here or there. I think they need to educate the teachers so that they can educate our children !
If they delay school it would be the end of the world they think, well they need to wake up and thing of maybe a law suit if the child gets hurt or a parent slips and falls walking them up the sidewalk.
What about the other day when they give less then a half hour notice that they would be dismissing early ?
Knox Schools have a lot to be desired . They are only going down hill.

No I'm not out of touch of what's going on in the world. The Middle East is only part of the problem. If our goverment would let us use our own oil which this counry has plenty of we wouldn't have to depend on foreign oil. It just seems like when the majority of the house is Republicans they want to tax and take away from all the people they can. I am neither Democrat or Repubilican and I see the difference. We need to worry about our counrty and to help the people here before we worry about helping other countries.
I agree with you that we need to be able to drill here, it is really not to our advantage to keep putting off drilling and expanding our own supply of oil. As for helping us before other countries again I am all for that, recently my son (without any input from me) was assigned a project at school, this project was to go online and play some game and for every so many points a basket of food(rice, wheat etc.) would be donated to a third world country, he refused and said they should send the money to the Americans who are out of work/homeless and take care of them before people in other countries. Out of the mouth of babes, we need to focus on the US and not the rest of the world. They don't care about us in our times of need why should we worry about them, I am not against helping others, but we need to take care of our own first, and that includes removing all illegal aliens in this country, do it the right way or stay where you came from. It's time for us to stand up and say enough is enough.
Most of you people are so out of touch with reality on two items on this board:
1) We do not produce enough oil or have enough available capacity to stop importing oil.
2) Public Unions are causing the states and this country to be on the brink of bankruptcy.
Tom Berg is going to be on TV tonight on Parks and Rec. Neat. Need to start calling him Hollywood on the radio.
Tom Berg is going to be on TV tonight on Parks and Rec.???
Would appreciate you sharing the time & channel. Thanks in advance.
What do...
the late Shah of Iran
Ferdinand Marcos of the Philipines
"Baby Doc" Duvalier of Haiti
Pat Bauer, all have in common?
When they could no longer get their way, they all fled their respective capital cities and hid.
This is NOT what democracy looks like. A free and fair election, in which the Democratic majority was
defeated, that's what democracy looks like. This is what anarchy looks like.
STOP BROADCASING those bad weather days, just skip those weather report and play nice peaceful music, help us start each day on a Happy Note! If somebody complains just tell them it is your New Policy! God Bless All who will complain about this new policy!
NO,you are out of touch with reality we have enough oil resoures and gas on reserve the govenment just refuses to release it. And it's not the unions that are bankrupting the country,it's the politicians. Why doesn't congress take a pay cut and have to pay for their own health insurance it's the tax payers who have to foot the bill for them. Instead of giving tax breaks to the big corporations give the tax breaks to the hard working people. And instead of sending money to help foreign countries keep it in the USA.
This bill only affects the PUBLIC unions, correct? So if I understand that correctly, that would be unions related to teachers or government jobs, not Construction Workers, Ironworkers, Operating Engineers, Bricklayers, Pipefitters, etc. Is this correct?
The public unions are what protect teachers that have tenure and are incapable of doing their jobs effectively and allow teachers to strike, leaving our children in schools without being able to be properly educated. I think we should do away with those types of unions.
I don't think everyone is getting that not all unions are affected by this bill. I had teachers when I was in school many years ago that couldn't teach and the school couldn't do a thing about it...just waiting for that one to retire was the response we got when we complained and tried to get help. My daughter had similar teachers in the recent past...same type of response. That shouldn't be. Our kids shouldn't suffer because someone is just putting in their time until retirement. If they aren't qualified to teach, get them out of the schools.
I can't take it anymore. Some of you have no clue what you are talking about. Where do you people get your information? The school doesn't lose money if a child is absent a day or two or if we have a delay OR if we have a snow day. Schools have to be in session for 180 days regardless. Furthermore, tenure doesn't mean that you absolutely CANNOT be fired. A tenured teacher can still get fired. You all seem to know as much about education as Mitch. Actually come to think about it, that makes you qualified to make decisions about education now doesn't it?
I'm a Rep./Ind., but I don't blame the Dem. for what they're doing. Actually proud of'em. They're standing up for their constituents & Unions. Yes, I'm VERY disappointed by both parties, as it's OUR Gov't that's breaking the bank. I would like to know how much $ OUR leaders have made by gauranteeing all the bad loans by Freddie & Fannie? And with all the tax $ paid by Americans, then WHY have we had to borrow SO MUCH $ FROM FOREIGNERS? Yes, maybe a Union Rep might make 100K, but that's FAR LESS than our worthless Gov't. The 1st place we need to "trim the fat" is the greedy people who are making all these terrible decisions. NO MORE BAIL-OUTS...NO MORE LOBBIESTS...NO MORE FOREIGN AID...KEEP OUR OWN OIL...END THESE WARS...CUT ALL STATE & FED WORKERS SALARY IN 1/2...NO OFF-SHORE CORPORATION'S BANKING TO ELUDE TAXES...SET CAP-N-TRADE...WELFARE REFORM(make'em earn it if able)...LOWER COLLEGE TUITION...IMPLEMENT A SPEEDY DEATH PENALTY FOR MURDERERS(cut prison costs across the board)...CLOSE MANY MILITARY BASES WORLDWIDE...I can go on & on. But...EVEN IF EVERY AMERICAN IS WORKING & PAYING 100% OF THEIR INCOME IN TAXES...IT'S STILL NOT ENOUGH TO PAY OUR GOV'T BUDGET...SO THE FIRST PLACE TO MAKE CUTS IS IN WASHINGTON D.C. & ALL OUR STATE CAPITALS. But these people look at everything else but themselves..but I fear that the hole they've dug is going straight to Hades without the chance to dig out of.
It is interesting to me to keep track of the comments here. It is fun at times. Occasionally it is informative. Quite often it is humorous. But much too often it is down right scary. The founding fathers thought that an educated and informed citizenry was the best way to govern this country. I am just not sure that we are living up to their expectations.
Several posts have been made about the absent legislators. Without making a judgment about their points, I have to applaud their dedication and courage. They surely know that they are not part of the current majority opinion. It takes a great deal of internal fortitude to defend what is probably a lost cause for what you believe is the greater good. (The Alamo comes readily to mind) I do not know about you but I cast my vote for the person that I believed would make the best decision for the State of Indiana on my behalf. I did not vote for the person that would vote with the wind. Their current actions are, I hope, what they truly believe are in the best interest of the people of Indiana. That they believe that this is their only recourse is truly sad to me. Ideally the legislature is suppose to be where informed and intelligent people express their views and ideas and reach an agreement on what is best for all of the people of the State not just the few. That they believe this is not possible in the current session is quite frightening.
As for the teachers; I recently heard of a blog? from a teacher that stated she would be happy not to have her teacher's salary. Just pay her for the babysitting and she would toss in the education for free. 30 children at $1 per hour times 7 hours per day for 180 days comes to $37,800. That would be a pay raise for her. It has been quite a while since I needed the services of a babysitter, but I doubt that I could get one for $1 per hour. Just who are you trying to mislead about a truly needed service in this country? Just for perspective, my niece was paid over $10 per hour last year for babysitting in a St. Louis suburb.
I think maybe WKVI needs to change the color of the school closings and delays. I could barely read them in the very light blue color they are. Just a thought. Thanks
In responce to ya 22mts. Sales taxes are up 1% under Daniels If you really look at your property tax formula it is and wiil continue to go up under Daniels plan. Your income tax is down by 2% (socisl security) but your contribution to you retirement fund is also down by 2% so when you retire it will be 2% short for life . This is to be for 2 years. The gas tax is up set by Daniels adminstration. If most would look at what the 1% sales tax has cost you , you will find the the slight reduction in your property tax has been eaten up by the increase of the 1% sales tax . This was just another very quite way Daniel has goten into all of our pockets Republician Democrats any every other Indiana resident. Remember when he was running the first time. 1 time zone for all of Indiana and when he was elected we have 3.He sold the toll road and now its worse to travel and more expensive then ever to drive on. As for breaking the unions those of you who arn't in a union be ware. If Union wages and benifits go down what do you think will happen to yours (your right) your pay and benifits will go down also because there is now no support system for the worker period . Do a little resource on the GREAT DEPRESSION and you will see why unions are here . Remember history always repeats it self it's just a matter of when.
We'd be lucky to have Nancy and the others stay on vacation for a long time. Still, get back to work. That's what we're paying you for. Just because someone says they won't budge, doesn't mean they won't. That's why good leaders can work things out. Come to a happy middle. If you can't do that, get a new job. Or at your age, retire.
An act of terror?
How is it that some one or some persons drain a water tower and no one not know it? Isnt anyone watching this new water tower in Hamlet? Are there locks and gates to protect this from happening? You would think that a community water source would have some sort of protection from unauthorized persons from tampering with it?
To the Dems that walk out of the meeting and went to Illinois, I'm a Democrate and I'm not a bit proud of you, why not stand your ground and fight for what you believe. Your not children throwing a hissy fit or are you? We voted thinking you are there for the people, this shows you are there only for yourself. Wise up and stand up for the people.
If I want Pat Bauer to represent me I'll move to South Bend. I'm fed up with my State Reps. metallity of getting her marching orders from that guy. "Yes Mr. Bauer. Run to Illinois? Anything you say Mr. Bauer." I'll vot for anybody who will listen and represent the people of Starke County. November, 2012 cant get here fast enough.
To the person complaining that the rest of us were not knowledgeable enough to discuss tenure. They may be able to be fired, however, it takes much longer than it should and usually they are just shifted around in the corporation. I don't have to have a degree to understand that public sector unions are bad for this country. If it is money made off of the taxpayer the taxpayer should have a say, instead of collective bargaining put it on the ballot. Let the people decide how much these people are worth.I have to say most people that I know are so upset over the public education system; the education staff would get no raises nor benefits. Public education has been declining and you can blame it on overcrowding or anything else you want, but looking at it realistically teachers are not what they used to be. I have three children in the public education system and there have been more teachers who make me say to myself "where did they get their training, from a cracker jack box?" Good teachers these days are hard to come by, however, they are out there, the unions protect the bad ones and make it difficult to get rid of them. School administrators are even worse than the unions, I actually had a superintendent tell me to find him a qualified teacher, when we had a teacher who was so bad everyone was failing. I'm sorry but those taxpayer dollars that we are paying him to make sure that he had qualified teachers on his payroll not just someone to fill the position. So you can make this into a fight over all unions, but it isn't and collective bargaining is not a right, I don't see it listed on the bill of rights, it was a privilege and when you abuse a privilege it gets taken away. That is the basic rule in my house, abuse it and lose it. Welcome to the real world public sector unions.
The democrats aren't throwing a "hissy fit" or trying to get out of voting for something...they are trying to buy time. What they are being asked to vote on just came up, and there are so many proponents to the bill. There was no time to debate or negotiate. They are still going to have to vote, but this tactic will give time for reflection and reason.

Much the same as the Democrats did with the health care bill. I guess it goes both ways doesn't it, however, the democratic lawmakers have had plenty of time to read the legislation since they have been in Illinois. It is time for them to come back to the statehouse and do the job that they were elected to do. You win some you lose some, pouting in Illinois because you can't figure out how to best the republicans isn't the way to do it. You don't like it change it the next election, but I won't vote for a democrat if they aren't going to do the job they were elected to do. Show the people you are willing to go to work, or maybe the right to work should be taken away from the democratic representatives if they continue to refuse to come back to the state.
Democorat walk out . Someone need to ask an old time republician when and how many time they did the same thing . I think you will find the republicians have walked out 2 or 3 time in the last 20 years. I thinkyou will find that the Democrats got them back with compermise . Daniels said on live TV and Radio he would not ompermise . Leaders who do not compermise are call d-c-a-o-s you fill in the blanks
I understand about standing up for what you believe in but running away and not voting is not the answer. All these politicians are acting like spoiled children and having temper fits. It sure changes the way I will vote next time. Let's face it the gas prices are up because it is getting close to the time the oil executives and their friends take their vacations. Prices for food and necessities going up they need more money.
Yes you're right both parties have walked out, but this is the longest one has refused to come back. There won't be negotiation just as the federal house/senate didn't negotiate on the health care law. It happens and although it isn't right running away is not the answer. Dembowski was elected to do a job not sit in Illinois with the Indiana Democratic party paying her bills for hiding out. She says she wants to help her constituents, she can't do that in another state. Holding up the legislation and costing more in special sessions and not getting a budget passed isn't helping and in the long run will only make it worse, it's time for them to quit hiding out and get back to work.
There have been walkouts in the past but never have they fled outside the state of Indiana so that the Indiana State Police can't get them. This is completely outragious. Dembowski always campaigns on how much she listens to us and how much she represents her constituants. This time she sold us out to Pat Bauer and his cronies. She isnt standing up for us. She is running away with them. Give me a state Representative who will fight for me in Indianapolis. I want my voice heard in the Capital building. She cant represent me if she isnt even there. I voted for her before, but Never again! I am very disappointed in her.
Don't all of you Tea Partiers get it when you say why don't the Democrats stay and negotiate? What are you talking about? They don't have the votes. The Republicans don't have to negotiate. Do you want Nancy to take her knitting needles down there, while the Republicans shove every piece of legislation down their throats? Without going over the border (so Mitch and the boys can't touch them) they can go over bills to present to all Hoosiers. Speedball Mitch would love to fast track everything. And for your information being a right to work state means you move into a class with Mississippi.
First and foremost you are wrong I am not a member of the tea party, I am a registered Democrat, and I am appalled at the way both political parties act. The democrats don't have the votes so we are going to extend the legislative session costing more money to the taxpayer, how is that good? It just doesn't make good fiscal sense to put off the inevitable, as I said before if you don't like it change it with the next election. As I have also said I grew up in a union household and have no problem if you want to be part of a union then that is your right. If you don't want to be part of a union they should not be able to discriminate against you for saying no, simple as that, if you don't like it too bad. You cannot say that someone must be part of a union or they cannot work at a job, how is that right? It is discrimination plain and simple. Not all unions are good unions either, and you really have to be careful which ones you get involved in. And as I have said before public sector unions have no place, they are extortionists plain and simple, if they want a raise use the referendum and let the people vote on raises and benefits, and lose tenure be brave enough to say I am a good teacher and I don't need a safety blanket.
