«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 236 of 236i work a very good pay union job for 4-5 months a year then the rest of the yr i draw $400 per week unemployment. i could work doing something the rest of the year but why would i want to. its out of control, and soon i am sure some 12 yr old from china will be doing my job and i will retire with a pension of over $3500 per month, that the government has taken over and will pay with tax dollars. so dont run me down for falling in a pile and coming up smelling like a rose. should i refuse the money and quit my job?
signed, hillbilly boy thats done well
I see that even with the Dems. gone they're still getting good things done at Indy,by pushing through the ban on gay marriage. Don't stay in Illinois too much longer, they might decide they don't need you at all.
Who does Dembowski and the other Democrats work for? The Teamsters, IBEW and NEA who might represent at most 10% of their constituents OR the majority of us who are just ordinary hard working tax paying citizens? I guess they really work for these special interest union groups that contributed tons of money to their party coffers. I hope everyone remembers next election what tail was wagging what dog!
REASONS TO LIVE IN/MOVE TO STARKE COUNTY: Adult bevages will soon be available in every store or place of business seven days a week,so you can use your freedom to drink and drive home from church on Sunday mornings.
Cock fighting entertainment to pull in tourists from Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky and even Mexico.
Jobs in law enforcement. Retire from the Chicago police force and show the local law men how to handle the criminals that also retired from Chicago.
Winter Sports available free. Our skies open up and our roads fill up, did you not listen to WKVI when they warned you that it was coming. So why are you complaining that you spent all night in your car trying to work outside of our county.
Education. Some of finest financially blessed students even moonlight in places they can't legally patronize. Too bad, our police had to go our high school and arrest them. What a nice example of how our legal system works.
Unemployed....come here, we will provide you with housing but try not to get arrested--our jail is overcrowded and you might not get your own private cell.
Gas prices are on par with the nations, so what...if you can afford those big motor homes, summer homes and big gas demanding cars...you can afford to give our station owners some much need dollars.
And Summers...it gets awlfully hot here, maybe you should stay in your air conditioned motel rooms and play on the internet just please do not make phony money....that is a crime here too if you try and use it please take it to other places just don't tell them where it came from.
A nice library with police that patrol it when school is dismissed, a wonderful opportunity for the local police and students to interact on weekday after school days.
FINALLY, we have Freedom of Speech==any resident or non-resident can run for any office they please and spent lots of their money here......
SO STARKE COUNTY IS THE PLACE TO LIVE, DRINK AND BE HAPPY forever.
Guess who gets to pay for the special session that will be required since the dems ran and hid like little babies WE ARE THE TAXPAYERS, not the unions or the indiana democrat party, how disgusting is this, maybe we can through them out since they are about to lose the residency!!
I don't have a problem with Unions, but I don't think the Union dues should be used to sway/bribe our elected officials to vote a certain way. That money should not be givien to anyone holding an elected position. I never knew until recently that was the case.
Poor Me! I have REPUBLICAN MORALS & DEMOCAT INCOME. It's hard to decide which way to vote.
Why are we having to cut services? Those on the right kept telling us if we cut TAXES we would increase employment and the economy. By now we should have over-employment.
If this is what tax cuts have done, maybe it is time to have some tax increases.
dear repulican morals, dont worry about it, your vote will not be counted in primary anyway, because your rep has lived at one address in another state for 30 days, so she is now an IL resident and not indiana, this means you are not represented, so your vote will not be counted. have a nice day
what tax cuts, tax cuts were only talked about and not cut.
to the person who wrote: REASONS TO LIVE IN/MOVE TO STARKE COUNTY:
FREAKIN AWESOME! You just made my day. That was an excellent post.
WKVI NEWS POLL
Are you in favor of the proposed educational related legislation and how it will impact our local area schools?
Don't you think your wording of the question kinda slants the poll? The word "impact" sure sounds like negative impact, and why would anyone want that?
For all those who aren't voting for Nancy next time, or are still hating the dems for going to IL...I hope you like teachers getting RIFFED at North Judson, because that is only going to be the tip of the iceberg. Mitch Daniels has said from the beginning he would like to consolidate all small schools. So there won't even be a North Judson school anymore. A lot of these new bills are designed to kill rural schools.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAh.............Thanks WKVI for this place to exercise
our freedom of speech!
OH...................Well all is never well for those of us blessed to have a home, food and shelter.
At least we do not get arrested for expressing opinions here yet...YOU are still posting poor weather reports.........
Come on people, you can't vote for Knox Mayor unless you LIVE in the city limits of Knox. Just because you shop here, doesn't mean you can vote here. Unless your voting for.....
If the county has the money to be increasing the employees in the Treasurer's office then they need to consider doing the same in several of the other departments that are understaffed: starting with the Sheriff's Dept. Let's start spreading all of this extra money around. I would rather that it be put into extra patrolmen for public safety than in collecting taxes. When was the last time that the Auditor, Clerk, Surveyor, etc. got more money for additional staff? Sounds like the squeeky wheel gets the grease.
njsp has no idea what their funding will be for next year, as you know indiana is closed for business. the house APPROVED funding for online charter schools before they left the state. if knox, od, and njsp had became a county school the locations would not have changed at all, still redskins, bluejays and bobocats. just the administration costs would have went way down, and the student count would have been way up so posiable funding cuts would have been none for very little. the county would have needed only 1 person in charge not 3,(like porter county) staff insurance would be cheaper due to total numbers. supplies could be purchased in larger quantities and saved money there and so on,
look at your county tax bill see how much your school tax has raised in last 2 yrs. all the other county services combined run on less than the school. the school are not rewarded for saving money, they will hurry up and spend out of accounts at end of the yr so they will not loose the funding the next yr. that is how i define waste.
One superintendent for all three schools? Oh good, then we can be just like South Bend School Corp. too.
My school tax money is the best tax money I spend. It stays local, here in Indiana. But if you investigate, you will see that the tax formula for how schools get the money has changed, which is why you see the difference on your tax bill. The taxes you pay don't just stay in Starke county anymore, they are divided through the state.
The proposed money cuts you suggest really won't add up to much in the scheme of things. Do you really think OD pays more for a ream of paper than Knox, or South Bend, because they have less students?
I heard something on an Indiana Radio talk show. A caller reported about how State Reps are paid. He said they are paid their full year salary in two payments, that happen in January and February. Then, they are additionally paid daily per diem. I thought he said, they are paid $180.00 per day when they are in Indianapolis, and $90.00 per day when they are home in their districts. Is all this TRUE?
http://ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/Indiana_House_of_Representatives
An interesting link about Indiana representatives and how they are paid.
$22,616.46 per year
$138.00 per day- (Unvouchered- means they dont have to prove they were working)
$35,852.40- at avg per day rate- (5 days a week x 4.33 weeks a month x 12 months)
Total= $58,468.86
The average median household income for Starke County is $37,243 The difference in income is that a State Rep makes $21,225 more.
WKVI, We hear about crashes on the toll way, or other news items that are far outside our county. We even hear a comparison of unemployment rates in the region..
To bad the turnout for 50's Night was so low. I'm sure the friends of the park lost money on the deal. I know they must have tried real hard. They had a lot of food, good music and support of local businesses and their own people. Maybe WKVI could have done something about it during the news when most people tune in. Thanks for a good night anyhow.
I see the Union Bosses have let the Democrats return from Illinois.
Why wasn't the fire at Bass Lake reported on your radio station. We lost a house and another one was very badly damaged. I would like to know how it started because it is totally destroyed.
Dr. Disney movin' on up the corporate ladder. I think its a shame that you can't find a superintendent from the LOCAL area who is looking to get/keep the schools on the right track and FOLLOW THROUGH. Not up and leave. Apparently OD doesn't get as many excuses for a "snow day" so we need to move further north.
I', still confused over the Labor Laws in question. Why do people that work for the State, County, Schools, etc need a Union? How much $ does having a Union cost the TAXPAYER'S? I agree, they have the right to gather & fight for wages, but is a "Union" necessary, when in all actuality, they already are a Union through their occupation. I just don't support Unions that are living the HIGH LIFE on tax payer $, and there has to be a way to communicate & find agreeable middle-ground. There's just too many MIDDLE-MEN in every aspect of our lives, especially the Medical Field, which is why prices have sky-rocketed. Cut out the worthless middle-men who are bleeding us dry.
So much for the Democrats and Republicans. How about we pray for the people in Japan and in Libya???
Believe me, OD is fortunate that Dr. Disney stayed as long as he did. Thank you for all that you have done for us Dr. Disney.
Why do people get upset when someone tries to improve himself professionally? Dr. Disney is probably making a wise decision that will advance his career. Good for him!
Oh he is definitely advancing his career- and wallet. I don't doubt that for a minute. Yes, I agree when opportunities present themselves, it is good to advance yourself. But for positions in schools, especially a superintendent, I think it's ideal for the board to elect a local person who is going to plant themselves into a position and stay. I loved my children having Dr. Bourff as the superintendent here at Knox. Having stability and knowledge of the area and school system, makes for the best superintendent, for the community and all involved.
And that is exactly why Dr.Bourff left, to advance his salary and situation. Money talks.
Nick and Jesses son Kyson Lee was born March 22 2011 then on March 27th 2011 Kyson Lee was called back to Heaven. I want to thank everyone for your support and prayers .Services for Kyson Lee will be from 10 am - 12 noon Thursday MARCH 31 at ' LAKEVEIW ' funeral home in LAPORTE. and then Kyson Lee willbe laid to rest in Pine Lake cemetery next to his auntie Brooke Lyn. Thank you all again and God bless you.
That's cause it's all about dollar signs and not the kids.
SOme of you people deserve to be in the Whiners Hall of Fame. You people are embarrasing yourselves, and I am embarassed for you. Lots of school people make sacrifices to teach your kids, and you moan and groan every time something doesn't go your way. You want someone to take care of your kids all day and teach them all that they need to know, but I bet you don't want to turn off the tv to help them with their homework. Look in the mirror.
Starke County Highway Department - Thanks for closing the bridge on the corner of 500E and 700N without so much as a warning. It was nice to come home to find out I now live on a dead-end road. It's a pleasure to have to drive 5 miles to our farm that is .25 mile away, count the cars that can't read the sign and drive all the way down to the bridge and turn around, no longer receive my paper because the paperlady doesn't know how to get to my house, and anticipate the lovely roadside attractions like appliances and garbage that always seem to grow on the side of the road on dead-end roads.
I know there are other bridges in the county that have been emergency closed without so much as a word, as well as others that may be closed soon. Several years ago I had heard there were something like 60% of the bridges in the county at-risk, yet nothing was done to solve the problem, other than post them with a lower weight rating.
I know like most of the residents, I took something like a bridge for granted. Believe me, I will no longer do so. I understand budget constraints, but I am sure that, had this bridge been near a Commissioner's home, it wouldn't be closed.
democrats were a no show today in indy, last few days that they were there they were not fighting for the schools or fighting for the unions, they were trying to bargain their way out of the over $3000 each fines. by not showing up their jobs and pay should be forfeited.
