It's not the heat it's the humidity.
let the complaining begin!!!
To LHB:
I had a similar experience a couple of weeks ago at around 10:00 pm. I went outside and saw what I thought was a large animal in the dark and thought it was just my eyes. I would say it was closer to a Great Dane in size. A few minutes later I also heard a noise that I have never heard before. It was very terrifying. I live north and east of north judson. It was definately the noise or size of a coyote. I have lived in the country for quite sometime and I know what a coyote looks and sounds like.
Our hot humid weather is due to a tropical vortex caused by El Nino.
To everyone who came out tonight to honor George "Andy" Howes, thank you!!!! It was wonderful to see so many people lining the streets especially since this was a homecoming long overdue. Rest in Peace Andy.
There are so many motorbikes, mini-bikes and golf carts using our legal roadways that if they were made legal and all had to pay taxes, buy plates and have drivers license/permit just think of the extra $$ put into gov. That would be better than taking $$ away from our seniors on soc. sec. that have paid into and EARNED its return when needed to live on!!
It was great to see all the people come out for Andy's homecoming. What a great show of support. I really don't want to see that again for a dead soldier.
However, I have to agree about the scooters going up and down hwy 35 before the parade. There was a lot of them not paying any attention. No plates, no license and no turn signals.
thanks all, for monday nite, people mowed, cleaned, painted, people did so much alot just all on their own. and tuesday morning, didnt see cans, paper etc everything was left clean. i am just so proud of all of the firemen, vets, patroit riders and everyone else that supported, and that special elderly couple that set at home and held hands and their little American Flags while listening to wkvi. would like to see some pics, for some reason my eyes watered and blurred most of procession, darn alergies.
I think there are three special people in Knox who we need to give a special thank you to for going above and beyond the call of duty in cleaning up our city for the homecoming of Andy Howes. As I was driving by at different times,I saw Knox Mayor Rick Chambers, Coucilman Jeff Berg and Coucilman Greg Matt all working to make our city look great!
Thanks for all of your hard work!!
It is nice to hear positive comments about our city instead of all the negative. When I read about the Mayor, Jeff and Greg it makes me glad to be from here. It is a big change from the feeling I get when I read they are trying to make new laws and add permits for local businesses struggling to make it. We would have a safer and happier community if we were business friendly. I have heard of several places open and get pushed out to go to Porter or Marshall and make a good living. Now just concentrate on a kid friendly gym that has daycare and study rooms that is affordable for all local people to use it.
It was wonderful to see such a great homecoming for a fallen soldier . It would also be nice to start doing this as they come home alive from serving our country so that they can see first hand how much people appreciate what they do for us and our country . Not just see there name on a billboard or newspaper to welcome them back from tour of duty. Just a suggestion
Isn't that there job any way to keep the city clean, maybe they could go down to Parkview next.
To the person who said the he doesn't want to see picture posted all over on signs and billboard when a service man returned home. Thank God some do get to come home safely. I would not care if there were 1000 signs and pictures all over. They got back safe and no war is fun to be in. It was an honor for Andy's brother to at least know he was in a great resting place back in America. So be proud of all our American Service people that serve this country. God Bless America!
Maybe the people in Parkview should cleanup after themselves. I don't think it's the mayor's job to pickup after people who have no pride and don't care about their community.
I think someone misunderstood a comment about seeing name on a billboard when coming home.....
They want to see that but would also like to have a honoring of them also such as a parade or something to say welcome home and let people in the communitry know who fought for them and beable to give a personal thanks.
They were in favor of all they do now but thought it would be something extra. You may want to reread that post.
When kids at that age fight, a parent spanks them or puts the kid/kids in time out, not push them down so hard that a skull breaks from back to front. I think it looks like his head was smashed in by someone grabbing it and banging it on the floor, or maybe she shoved him down, but the other injuries lead me to think she done other things, maybe kicking him, that will also explain the other injuries and a skull fracture that starts in the back and travels all the way to the front. In any case you cannot just take her word for it, she was walking around town like nothing in the world bothered her. Even in the hospital she acted like nothing was wrong. The woman has no remorse at all, if she did, and if it was an accident then when the EMT got to the house for the father, she would have spoken up. Jealously is what made her act the way she did.
The person said he wanted to see more than just their name on a billboard or newspaper not that he didn't want to see them at all. Please read more carefully before posting something like that.
I cant believe we have a Casey Anthony right here in Knox!! I hope she gets what she desserves and dont get a slap on the hand like Casey did. RIP ETHAN
I think the Knox High School gym should be renamed the "ANDREW HOWES COLOSSEUM " as a lasting reminder of this hero's sacrifice. Who else agrees?
School will start next week for our county, lets take special care to watch out for the school buses, and students that drive to school.
Students please drive with care. Drive within the speed limit, you too have responsibility of taking care of others around you. Bus drivers please do not be on your cell phones while driving, my grandson bus driver was seen talking on her phone while driving.
My first question on the Starke Country Treasurer mess is why it took so long to do something about it. Dan Bridegroom and Mark Smith, as president of the county Commissioners and president of the county council respectively, had a meeting with the auditor from the Indiana State Board of Accounts on April 27, 2010 and were presented with the facts of this matter.
Now this mess shows up on the local radio as if the commissioners have just found out about this matter. Does it really take the better part of a year and a half for these people to act on a matter of this severity, or have they been trying to figure out a way to save face, or even more sinister, save another democrat crook from exposure? I wonder.
By the way, if you want to see the details of the State Board of Accounts Audit, just go the Indiana State Board of Accounts web site and search for released audits. It’s all there for the public record. You’ll see what I mean. The County Commissioners and Country Council sat on the matter for so long, I wonder why?
Course these are the same country commissioners who were never were able to stop those folks out there on hwy 10 west of Bass Lake from killing livestock in their garage and hauling the dead carcasses out of state with blood dripping from their van as they left Starke County.
for the high school band......use a field instead of blocking off the parking lot with your cars !
Under the new law that took effect last year, bus drivers and any one that has a license to haul people, are not even allowed to talk on a radio. let a long a phone.
But bus drivers talk to the bus barn and others all the time.
Just another example of how the people of Starke County violate and laugh at the laws of Indiana.
Sort of like driving golf carts on Highway 10.
go watch the band practice then you will understand why band practice has to be done on pavement. it will be clear then
dear knox parents, fridays your kids will be home 30 mins early.
treasurer people get to go home with one million dollars. i do not understand. i am not very smart can anyone explane this to me?
At first glance it appears that the officials we elected here in Starke County that are responsible for our county’s finances are following the example set by those we elected to go to Washington D.C. There are answers to the questions raised by the state board of accounts with respect to the funds that are unaccounted for and hopefully those answers will be forthcoming and wholly truthful.
This is not the first time local funds have been unaccounted for. Unfortunately, it seems history does have a way of repeating itself. This trend will continue unless we the people become better educated on the workings of government, vigilant and more personally involved.
there is no law that states a school bus driver cant use the radio to contact admistration about a matter of a child. the state mandates the buses have radios. now there is a law that they signed yesterday that says "get your facts right"
What about doing something for Sgt. Joseph A Ford!? This town needs to let his family know how proud we are of him.
Please fill us in on Sgt. Joseph A. Ford. I don't recognize the name?? I think everyone in the community is proud of all of our servicemen.
Sgt. Joseph Ford died in Al Asad Iraq. Think it was mothers day 08. His family is very proud of him, but they have taken it very hard. I can't even think how hard it must be. He graduated from Knox High School. And was going to school in Evansville. I heard the Nationl Guard had a honor wall in New Albany Ind back a few months. It would be nice if Knox did something like that here for his family.
joe ford was young. I remember him from school. very nice guy. I would like to tell his family im sorry and wish them the best.
Our forefathers wrote the constitution and bill of rights while the boogie man that was left behind in Europe and Great Brittan was still fresh in their minds. They collectively and individually tried to warn us about how subtly its tentacles can invade and corrupt a government and they supplied our nation with the tools necessary to keep it at bay, the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
Generation by generation we became more and more prosperous, became more and more complacent, lost our moral compass and ultimately became apathetic with respect to the workings of our government. The boogie man has flourished. The Constitution and Bill of Rights have been diluted by actions from both the executive and judicial branches while we sat silently.
If you care to look at what is happening in Great Brittan, Europe and especially Greece you will see firsthand what you will see here in America if governmental business as usual continues.
Chevron Corp. said Friday, 29 July, that profit jumped 43 percent in the second quarter as higher oil and gasoline prices made up for a decline in oil production. Could price gouging be a factor?
Yes, it would be a due honor to have a granite wall w/ a flag @ both ends of town with the soldiers & officers we've lost. We can never show our gratitude enough to their families, nor understand their loss, but we must, in some way, show we will not forget & are forever grateful.
To Mr.Weigal. I completely agree. Our Gov't needs to tarriff the crap out of imports to equal the playing field, or the rich American Corporations will continue to leave. Did you see the company in Mass. that produces solar panels, that received a $43Mil grant, then less than a year later brokered a deal w/ a Chinese Co. & are now moving all operations to China? American companies are selling Americans out for the mighty dollar. I would be proud to have a huge corporation that made decent profits, while employing thousands of Americans, than to manu. in China, sell to Americans & make monstrous profits. Our Gov't MUST take a stand. We the people must strive to Buy American, we can never quit trying, or we'll be throwing in the towel for our children
To Anounyous about a tarriff. Did you possibily think who will pay for the additional tarriff . THE CONSUMER . The answer is stop buying anything that does not say made in AMERICA USA
on 9/11 buy nothing unless it is made in the USA, pass it on
While I agree that when you can buying American made products is best for our country the issue lies with the lack of products actually made in America. Go to the store and tell me how many products you have to look at before you actually find one that says Made in the U.S.
if we made 1/2 the stuff in walmart do you think there would be unemployment. i dont think the price would be any higher if it was made here. now the ford is starting to show some profit, the uaw is talking about striking.
Actually, I do read labels and you would be surprised at all the products that ARE made in the USA. What I think you have to be careful about are the ones that say distributed in places in the USA, but that doesn't mean they are made here. It is interesting to read labels. I have been doing it for quite awhile and I do buy as much as I can that is made here.
Well, then we MUST sacrifice, go without things we are used to, for we will survive, and we WILL send a message that Americans are fed-up with traitors, treasonous businesses & corrupt politicians. How great would it be if we all shut off our cell phones, turned off our internet, bought as little gas as possible & made a whole-hearted effort to Buy American?
The reason the band practices on the asphalt is because the coach won't let them practice on "his field"
is there a harvest fest burn out contest this year
I am very proud of Menards...they have a LOT of products on their shelves that are made is the USA, and they even put signs up advertising that they are made in the USA. Someone at Menards is on the ball. I do a lot of shopping there for this reason. Not many chains can say they sell American Made products.
smiths farm store have alot of American made products too
This morning on the radio a lady called in and they said 911, she said she didn't call 911 and they kept saying 911, that was so dumb, don't they have anything better to
do with their time than that. Tom get with it. Don't make fun of people with things that like. What a waste of time on radio time.
Sad! Sad!
There are a;ready plans to honor our soldier who died in Iraq on Veterans Day. Thee will be memorials for both Afghan and Iraq veterans and those we have lost in Iraq will have their names placed on the monuments. The VFW and American Legion always have "Those who gave all." in our hearts and minds.
Please attend our second anual Veterans Day parade and honor all of our veterans.

A couple weeks ago the commissioners said it would take a few days to hire an auditor to get to the bottom of discrepancies in the treasurer's office. I haven't heard any more about this, at least in the news. What's going on? This is completely unacceptable! Who is the bigger problem in this fiasco? Our commissioners and council have known about the treasurer's problems for almost two years and have done what? Nothing!
This so reminds me of the never satisfactorily explained highway department fiasco!
How amazing that a comment came through about the treasurer. I think they pick and choose what can be printed. I have tried to make a comment about this and no luck.
I am NOT Linda Belork or anyone related to her. She would never do anything wrong and they have made her out to be a criminal.
There are so many people who support her. She tried her best to find the problem and yet the state could not even find it.
I understand that they have to have the office empty to start fresh, but don't make her out to be at fault.
Hang in there Linda.
If our treasurer did anything wrong, it was not admitting she was in over her head and needed help when the state audit came out over a year ago.
I'm not an expert on this kind of thing, but I think a state audit only officially documents certain accounts don't balance. I don't think the state goes through everything trying to find out why. I doubt the state said they couldn't find the problem. That sounds more like a local official trying to defend why nothing has been done about it.
Everyone needs to realize that processes like this take time. Also, what has been done thus far was done so to protect both the county and her. Theft has not been accused thus far, only poor accounting as was pointed out earlier.
Why no story about the stolen truck recovered?
Thank you, August 24, 9:06, for clearing up a question I was having. I didn't realize a state audit only pointed out, officially, that discrepancies existed. I wondered why we would need to hire another accounting firm to find the problem. That makes sense now.
starke county pays an out of county firm to open, record and deposit starke county property tax checks that you mail in. i never did like that idea, $30,000 per yr could pay 3 local people part time to help with that during the busy times. but no we spend out of town.
so the local treas office has to totally except south bends figures as being right, what could go wrong there. i know if my check book was short (600,000 800,000 1,000,000 keep hearing different figures) my checks would be bouncing, so why isnt the county's checks bouncing. i know alot of money could be saved by not having the court house full of elected people but to hire a trained person to manage the court house and all the staff do several jobs, move around in busy seasons. just like the real world.
I think the tragedy at the state fair was horrendous! But suing for $50 million????? Come on, isn't that a bit much!!!
A few days ago Napolitano announced that the DHS will no longer address the illegal issue from a common sense perspective. Her approach effectively provides amnesty to the millions of illegals already here and provides even more incentive for millions more to come here illegally.
I find this extremely galling on many levels. The ability the DHS to circumvent congress not only tramples the constitution but further erodes life as we have known it. Seems to me this is just one more step towards what appears to be the current administration’s quest to mutate the United States of America (USA) into American Socialist States.
Let us take a quick inventory of where we are. The problem mentioned above, gasoline 3-4 dollars a gallon, economy and national debt out of control, flash mobs, entitlement mentality rampant, unemployment over 9% and the list goes on. It doesn’t take a crystal ball to see where this is headed and it’s not particularly pretty.
Ok, I am going to sound like a union-buster, but it is far from the truth. I simply feel that at this point, the union leaders are becomming just as greedy and uncareing as the companies they are WORKING FOR. Point of fact: it is not low or no tarrifs on improted materials/goods that allows them to be sold in the USA so cheep. It is the low price of labor in the respective countries. Let's take the steel industry as an example. My father worked for Bethleham Steel Corp. for over 40 yrs. And he will be the first to admitt that the hourly wage of these workers is outrageous. At the time of his retirement, he was being paid,NOT EARNING, upwards of $42 per hour. He will also tell yoiu that there is no way he came close to doing work that should have been paid that much money. His, and most others that worked or still work iin the "mills" will tell you that it was the union that "drove the mills into the ground". Producing steel in the USA had simply become too expensive, so the other alternative was to look overseas for cheeper materials/labor. RIGHT NOW, one of the "mills" has begun hireing LABORERS, an unskilled position requireing NO advanced education, simply a GED. The pay...$28 to $32 per hour. A friend recently was hired for one of these positions and has NO prior experience, NO HS deploma, and barely knows how to get to the "mill" that just hired him.
To cut it short... Americans have become so spoiled with high pay for low positions because the unions continually want more and more. If you think they have the workers best interest in mind, think again. How much are they pulling in yearly for FORCED union "shops" ? How much in dues are paid to a Union office and officials hundreds of miles away from the buisness they claim to "support". At this point, companied that adopt a "Company-Em ployee" agreement are doing MUCH better than "union shops". Mainly because the worry in not so much on hourly wage, but more on health care, eye care, vacations ect.
My question is simple. The fact is that this is not the first time, and probubly will not be the last, that monies have been "misplaced" or unaccounted for. With that in mind.... How much would it cost to hire an independant accounting firm, OUT OF THIS COUNTY, to keep "tabs" on this and other public offices?? I really doubt it would come close to how much seems to find it's way into the wrong fund, or pockets......... Take bids, review the cost/loss spectrum, and make a LOGICAL decission. Not a decission that makes the local political parties happy while monies, goods and services are squandered.... Just a though... Be well
The price of gasoline is high because of GREED by the oil companies and the politicians. Who is suffering you ask us the public.
I would like to take a moment and remind all of you who are living in glass houses that you might want to be careful when the rocks start flying. Those of you who are guilty will know what I am saying!Be careful about judging because it will come back to haunt you someday.
The Harvest Festival parade was wonderful today! Thank you to everyone who worked to pull it off. My kids came home with a bag FULL of candy!
Sadly, with the beginning of the school year, also sets in motion the activities of those who would harm our children. PLEASE, PLEASE, parents, talk to your children, no matter what their age, about safety when approached by strangers as well as familular faces !!! How often do you read that the "suspect" was either a close family member or a relative.
ONE of the best defenses we used when our daughter was growing was a SAFE word. If ANYONE approaches your child, teach them that unless they use a safe word they should get away and yell for help as loud as they can !!! Even if the child is mistaken and should have trusted the person, THEY ARE SAFE !! Teach them a safe word and tell them not to tell ANYONE this word. The main thing that preditors avoid is attention. And, if your child yells loud when threatened, these losers get out of there fast.
Seeing some things about our children having these computers that I'm not very fond of. I presumed, when this was established, that the kids books would be downloaded onto their PC's, but instead, while doing homework with my 6th grader, she informed me that they are just suppose to "Google" the questions & find the answers. In doing so, we encountered countless topics, with very little having the correct answer. It'd been so much easier JUST HAVING THE BOOK, but I suppose they're learning how to computer search for info. But this process will lead to many problems, in that the broad array of issues that pop up for each question, with some being unsuitable for children. So I ask...WHY AREN'T THE BOOKS PERTAINING TO THESE CLASSES NOT ACCESSABLE TO THE CHILDREN THROUGH THE PC's? Or is the school just distributing worksheets & the PC(& the whole world it holds) the "text book"? Because my 6th grader, who's in 7th grd Math, was only given worksheets & told to do them at home, while not even being taught the lesson prior in class. So are the PC's the teacher as well?
Tony J Gross--you were always loved, especially by me. I miss you so. You will forever live in my heart XOXOXO
On the subject of kids being taught on PC's. I agree all this should be done in the class room each day. The teachers are being paid to teach students not PC's. And as doing this at home, parents are not getting paid to teach their kids at home, I say go back to paper and pencil to do home work. What do they do in the classroom? Yes computors are great to have but the time it takes to find all this on the computor is not good.
I want to know why gas came down a penny when district 17 Representative came to knox for a discussion on gas prices. When they left it went back up
all the school mac book info was went over when you and your child went to pick it up
Went to school with Sgt. Ford. Just wanted his family to no he will not be forgotten! He was such a good guy. Lots of fun. Sadly he will be missed.
WOW ! former KPD officer Ryan Taylor...not only a deadbeat dad but now charged with arsen ! We the People of Starke County only hire the best don't we ?
Wasn't the original premise for the "Dancing With The Stars" program to take untrained "stars" from different walks of life with little or no dancing experience and teach them to dance? Please check this out, Tom, before you make any more hasty personal judgments.
Really???? I have heard a lot of things about a lot of people but Ryan Taylor being a deadbeat dad has never been one of those.... I see him with his child all the time, and he always seems to be a great dad! I think he hasn't used his best judgement in this case but to say that he is a deadbeat dad is just WRONG!!
No, I actually enjoy helping my kids with homework. It's just that there is NO AGENDA on where they're supposed to get the answers. They were told just to Google them. As I understood at the class, is that the PCs will be linked up the corresponding books for the class. I DO NOT want my kids just Googling, or fishing, for answers blindly on the web.
Oh I'm sorry. The school is making you have to check what your kid is looking up on google. Truthfully you should already be doing that. You can google almost anything and get sites that kids shouldn't look at.
you obviously do not have a child in 6-12 because if they try to look up anything outside the schools filter it gets flagged and the school knows before you can even go through history
So then why are you complaining about what they are looking up? If the school has got their filter on it, then the kids can't look at anything bad. As far as "fishing" for answers, well it's really no different then going to the library and looking through the card catalog to find what you need. You might not know this but that's how search engines work. You type a subject and get a wide variety of topics pertaining to certian key words in your search.Darn that school for not being able to control the internet.
Since when do parents get "paid" for teaching their child? It's called being a parent! People expect teachers to not only teach, but raise their child, as well. Every parent should be involved in their child's education. Their learning should be it's own reward or payment.
The subject on the kids computor work at home. Come on people, yes sometimes it is hard for parents that do not have computor knowledge to help. If there wasn't a computor in the home it equally hard for parents to help. So it was gone over with the parents and child when they picked up the computor. What was really taught to them. And want is being done in the class room for the hour they are in there. Maybe the school should give the parent's some training on the computor. Like I said not everyone has a computor at home. School help
work with the families on this problem.
parents i am sure your 7th grader will operate the new computer with all ease, if they cant ask your 4th grader to help, remember they grew up with them. plus they are macs, i hear a mac can even tie your shoes.
Dear August 31, 2011 8:35 AM,
Hahahahahaha ! you have no clue what you are talking about do you ?
OOOOOH wait a minute you just have no idea what IM talking about !
Oh where were we before "google", how did we ever survive, let alone advance. Wait a minute, I seem to remember something called a "text book", or "reference book". I remember using something called an "index", it was all so long ago I forget. I even remember a teacher actually "teaching" from these things. We always said the this society would become dependant on computers, and now it seems it has pervaded the schools and their ciriculum. To expect parents to be in possession of computers, a certain type, and be computer literate is pretty "arrogant" by the school. But then, arrogant describes the school system pretty much.
ok i understand your point now, sorry.
