Those Christmas decorations look so awesome in your front yard next to that junk car.

I turn on the tube and what do I see
A whole lotta people cryin' "Don't blame me"
They point their crooked little fingers at everybody else
Spend all their time feelin' sorry for themselves
Victim of this, victim of that
Your momma's too thin; your daddy's too fat

Get over it

Instead of taking notice of the "junk car", you should be glad to see that the spirit of Christmas is in their hearts. Maby they cannot afford to repair the car. Maby they plan to restor it. Or maby you are makeing a broad statement made to insult everyone that has fallen on hard times in the current economy. People are so consumed with other peoples issues that they do not stop and look into a mirror at their own lives. You seem like the kind of person that sends his pets into other peoples yards to relieve themselfs.
This area would be such a greater place to live if everyone would stop picking out the problems, no matter how small, and praise the good. Doing so might encourage others to raise their standard of living and make this the wonderful place to live and raise our children it once was. So please, look at both sides of the issue before you come here to post insults and mindless comments.

The Christmas season is upon us. Let us be joyful and thankful for the things we have instead of looking for things we DON'T have!!!

America must be asleep. S 1867 if passed, and it looks as if it will, will suspend the Writ of Habeas Corpus and nullify the 6th Amendment. To make matters even worse Janet Napolitano’s comments yesterday at a news conference in Paris about the “Lone Wolf Terrorists” is another scare tactic to justify implementation of REX 84.

Ben Franklin comes to mind when he said “People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both.”

If the National Defense Act passes as it stands, it will be in direct violation of the Constitution. It will void "posse comitatus", making military action legal on US soil. It will transfer power to the potus enabling him to order arrest of persons he feels are terrorists, and incarcerate them in military facilities w/o benefit of rights! The senators that passed this unconstitutional act need to be removed from office immediately. It is a direct violation of their oath of office!!!

REALLY DOUBLE TIME AND HALF well that should be only after being in a full weeks active pay not vacation, holiday or sick time what is wrong with our so called leadership, vote them all out

Anonymous said...

I am confused... How can the COUNTY board continually tell us that so many "cuts" in programs, assistance, and other county NEEDS are necessary due to financial distress. However, with the same breath, tell us that COUNTY employees are being paid DOUBLE TIME AND A HALF for the holidays...
Please remember this fact when the county board takes away funds from programs that assist families in need, or from school programs but still approve new police cars for the sherriff. Have we forgotten that they approved funds for a new sign for the community center, and at the same meeting were talking about further cuts needed in the county budget. Hellllloooooooooo, is anyone out there listening?!?!
When will we stop voting in our friends and neighbors and start putting the right people in these positions that will make decissions made on actual need and necessity. When will we stop allowing our "officials" to run this area and spend PUBLIC funds as THEY see fit. We continually put people in offices that they are not qualified to hold. You would think that one person on the these boards would have experience or education in the financial field. Or at least have held other public office before being put in position to make critical decissions.

Anonymous said...

How many people are actually going to receive the double time and a half??? Not many government employees even work on holidays so this is only going to apply to those employees who are giving up their holiday with their family to keep you and your family safe...highway workers plowing snow if needed, sheriff's department, etc. I don't think that giving them some extra pay to give up their holiday is out of the question.

I would encourage people to get more active and attend meetings if you have input that might influence their decisions. My husband and I have recently attended some meetings due to an issue with a permit being given for a structure on our road that does not qualify for a permit. The BZA revoked it, but the structure is still there and the owners are living in it without the proper permits to do so. If you want change, you have to speak up and get involved. We plan to attend more meetings and get more involved so that we can have a valid say in what is going on in our community. I was rather surprised to see that nobody attends these meetings other than the boards and the people on the agenda to present their information...department heads reporting in, contractors submitting bids, etc.

I have decided that I can't complain about who is in office if I don't know them, but I will not continue to vote for someone who should not be there. The only way to know who is doing what I would want them to do is to go to the meetings and hear the discussions and the votes on various matters.

Anonymous said...

Common sense would dictate that a person being hired as a deputy, nurse, snowplow driver, people deemed essential personel, know going in that working holidays is part of that job. Extra pay is nice under any circumstances, but holiday pay in the course of completing your job description is out of line.

Anonymous said...

Come on give the county officers such as police personel a break ! They make peanuts to start with for what they provide to protect & serve the citizens of Starke County. Put yourself in their shoes in todays society they put forth alot of effort to protect y ou . I am sure they never know what situation is going to arise for them with all the drugs being used today and people that just dont care what they do . Each time they are in a situation they are risking their lives to protect you so while you are home eating and enjoying your holiday with your family an friends think about them out an about protecting you while they have families worrying about them at home. I think they can get paid for what they do !!! Lots of people get paid alot more for doing alot less !

Anonymous said...

I agree with you that going to the meetings is a smart idea. But is it not a shame that they have to be monitored like children. Should we not be able to trust these people without the worry of what they will do next. If we knew they had the best interset of the community in whole in mind, there would be no need to go sit and argue simple common sense issues. Weather or not you know these people is not the point. I vote for officials on their experience relevant to the position they are seeking. After that, what the accomplished in that position or how they conducted themselfs. Look at the current county board. How much experience in political office does ANY of them have prior to being voted in. Honestly, it is like a barber being hired as a cook on a learn as you go basis.

Anonymous said...

I have to agree with anonymous,Dec.7 5:24am. My daugher is a nurse and knows that she will have to work her share of holidays. She does NOT get double time and a half!!! Our county continually cries about having to make cuts and now this!

Anonymous said...

someone needs to contact the State Board of Accounts about this issue it appears to me that paying time and a half plus holiday pay, without being eligble for time and a half as stated in the employee hanbook Section 7.05 "Paid non-worked time such as paid vacation time, holidays will not be counted in computing eligibility for overtime payment" So they are ignoring the rules they created

Anonymous said...

For everyone that has posted on here about the holiday pay, if you would have attended the meeting only then would you know that the employees mentioned have been getting paid holiday pay plus their salary for over 20 years. This is nothing new here folks! The commissioners, along with the auditor, were trying to take away the holiday pay from the mentioned employees. The citizens who wish to post comments on here really need to start attending some meetings so they can get their facts straight before posting on here. It only makes you look foolish in the end. And just to clarify, the only employees that are getting paid holiday pay on top of their salary are the employees that are scheduled to work that day. Whereas, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day fall on Saturday and Sunday this year. The "county" employees will get Friday and Monday off to observe those days, whereas, the Sheriff's Dept employees will still be working and not get paid holiday pay, only the Sheriff's Dept. employees that work Saturday and Sunday will get holiday pay. Also, if you will take a look at the county website you will see that the Sheriff's Dept. does not have an "employee handbook", it states under the first page of the handbook "not for use by staff of the Sheriff’s Dept. or Highway Dept." Please get your facts straight before you start blogging about something you have no idea about.

Anonymous said...

to the prior post if you would read what was written, it has not been disputed that if they work they should recieve normal pay plus holiday pay which equals double time not double time and a half pretty simple!!!!

Anonymous said...

My facts are right about the highway they have a handbook and it says the exact same thing the exact same sectioin number!!!

Anonymous said...

Yesterday, I posted a comment, whch did not get posted to the website. I guess they nly post certain ones. It was about people getting extra pay for working on holidays, I think they are entiled to it. They are working to keep the hospital going, the policemen on duty are proecting the citizens, and the highway department are keeping our roads clear. Most stores are open, those employees should get extra if it a holiday or given the choose of an extra day off work. Come on people have a heart. Blessed Holidays to all.

For a thrill, drive down 350 E around 2:30 PM and play {dodge a school bus}. Anyone that thinks extending the bus drive to main st.is not a good idea, should give this a try! Why do people worry more about grammer, spelling, and simple errors in others post than the real issue or subject of the post itself. This kind of departure from the real issues might be why so many things in our area are left unchanged. If you cannot focus on the issue at hand and have a meaningful response and/or suggestion, let it go.

Why do so many care what the county employees are being paid on a holiday? While most others will be at home with their loved ones, or attending a family dinner or other celebrations of the season, these workers will be out working in the cold and snow. From a ditch digger to a police officer, they will be out taking care of OUR county in many ways. If you are jealous of them, apply for a county job. Oh wait, they do not pay enough for you to work for the county.... Hmmmmm. You say there is too much BS involved working for the county... Hmmmmm. For years people have continually stated these complaints concerning working for the county, but now that these workers are publicly given well deserved pay, now you want to complain about it. WOW ! THink about that whenever your road is clear of snow and ice.... Or when they come in the middle of night to repair water or sewer lines. Or when they have to pick up after pigs at the county park, and a whole host of things you would not consider or be able to do. And NO, I am not a county worker. But I respect what they do. Maby you all should as well.

Makes sense to me. Donald Trump on obamacare 'Let me get this straight ... We’re going to be “gifted” with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don’t. Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn’t understand it, passed by a Congress that didn’t read it, but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn’t pay his taxes, for which we’ll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!

An Assessment of State Appellate Court Cases,” published by the Center for Security Policy, is one of the most comprehensive studies I have ever seen. It covers more than 600 pages of material. The following summary statement is shocking:

"Our findings suggest that Shariah law has entered into state court decisions, in conflict with the Constitution and state public policy. Some commentators have said there are no more than one or two cases of Shariah law in U.S. state court cases; yet we found 50 significant cases just from the small sample of appellate published cases.

Others state with certainty that state court judges will always reject any foreign law, including Shariah law, when it conflicts with the Constitution or state public policy; yet we found 15 Trial Court cases, and 12 Appellate Court cases, where Shariah was found to be applicable in the case at bar. The facts are the facts: some judges are making decisions deferring to Shariah law even when those decisions conflict with Constitutional protections.

This is a serious issue and should be a subject of public debate and engagement by policymakers."

I will post a link to the Center for Security Policy if anyone wants it.

It further adds to Starke County's reputation as being populated by a bunch of redneck illiterates. It is no wonder teachers are pulling their hair out trying to teach proper use of language if parents are condening such use at home.

A decision by retail giant Lowe's Home Improvement to pull ads from a reality show about American Muslims following protests from an evangelical Christian group has sparked criticism and calls for a boycott against the chain.

The retailer stopped advertising on TLC's "All-American Muslim" after a conservative group known as the Florida Family Association complained, saying the program was "propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values."

Anonymous said...

Keep 'em coming, Rod! People need to know of the creeping socialism enveloping this nation. Sharia law is evil in it's contradiction to our system of freedoms. "All it takes for evil to win is for good men to do nothing", sound familiar? Nothing, in this case, is the public apathy, the belief that unconscionable attorneys are going to get it right for us! SPEAK UP, we can't hear you!

Share the road with all ! If you dont like the buses on 350 E Stay off that road . If you live on it well then get used to it they have been doing this for many years now . They as well as you & I have the right to be on the road. Driving down 35 through Knox you have to dodge cars, trucks, buses, semi's etc. So as a driver on the road we have to learn to share. Trouble with most today is that they are in a big hurry going nowhere so it is an inconvience to have to slow down. Reminder too the speed limit is 35 not 55 on that stretch of road so it should not be to hard to dodge them if you have too. Extension of road also means spending tax payers money. Do you want that or maybe just stay away when buses are using that road ?

Rod Weigel said...

The TLC program “All American Muslim” is pure and simple propaganda intended to lull Americans even further into denial of the clear and present dangers of Islam. It is somewhat akin to putting a wolf into sheep’s clothing, or maybe putting lipstick on a pig.

I applaud Lowe’s for having the fortitude to pull their advertising and take the heat and would like to think by them doing so America will wake up to the fact our way of life is at risk.

I have emailed Lowes in support and TLC with my disdain.

The smells of gingerbread, glühwein, bratwurst, candy, roasted almonds and fresh cut Christmas trees on a cold snowy December night never fail to bring a smile to my face. Crafts offered by local artists in small booths decorated with fresh evergreen garlands... I can picture it right now. Wouldn't that be nice?

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - A U.S. Congressional panel has frozen $700 million in aid to Pakistan until it gives assurances it is helping fight the spread of homemade bombs in the region, a move one Pakistani senator called unwise and likely to strain ties further.

Pakistan is one of the largest recipients of U.S. foreign aid and the cutback announced is only a small proportion of the billions in civil and military assistance it gets each year.

I posted the article in response to a question to Obama asking what is next for the military in the wake of Iraq. We are sending BILLIONS to the country that continually threatens the United States in many ways. We are sending the funds that couontry needs to pay for a war AGAINST the United States. The article goes on to say that the MANY IED produced are used on United States and coalition forces. Please tell me that I am not the only one discusted abd sickened that OUR government is allowing this to happen. And the ONLY reason they are now cutting PARTIAL aid is to make cuts in the defense bill. Seriously ?!?!? What other "pork" as they call it is attached to bills that the American people are not aware of.?? PLEASE, people, read articles and press releases, listen to reports in any way you can. Do what ever it takes to be aware what OUR government is trying to sneak past us. Do we want to pay for the very weapons that a country IS, and will use to kill our fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers and sisters ???

The state finds 300 million in funds that no one knew existed. And it happens to be the exact ammount that Daniels had cut from programs and education. To insinuate that Gov Daniels was going to pocket, as retirement, $300 million in "just found" funds is ludicris. That is the kind of remark I would expect from the likes of B Patrick Bauer, who would have put that money to useful purposes like gay marriage or anti right to work propaganda.

I was really upset when I read how our country had dumped the remains of our unknown military remains in a landfill. How on earth have we come to demorailize our service men and women that way? I cried when I was reading this. How much would it take to place these remains in a cemetery with a marker that stated unknown service members and show them a little praise for giving their lives for our country. Our country should be better than just dumping bodies like they were dogs!

DEC. 13 2:5O POST

You are absolutely correct,
that is a lot of money, to just joke about.

A lot of people lost their jobs, because not enough money and state workers were not given a pay raise.
For 3 years. Schools had to cut back and Teachers lost jobs.

How do we back up and make this right and no one was keeping record, to just let that much money disappear??

How much more money is missing.
Need a complete investigation.

I don't even want someone coming to Mc Donald's from Ford retiree
group trying to cover for this.

So wait... in local government occurs an allegation of accounting errors the treasurer is removed from office, and expensive investigation is conducted and the issue is long, drawn out and beaten to death. In state government LARGE sums of money are mishandled and "lost" and the state officials laugh it off?

Indiana residents please remember this and when Mitch eventually makes his bid for national office SPEAK UP and let the country know HE IS UNFIT!

A catch 22: According to a report by the Huff Post, a 21 year old woman in Afghanistan was brutally raped and impregnated by a relative. Subsequently, a Sharia court found her guilty of having had sex outside of marriage and sentenced her to twelve years in prison.

While incarcerated she gave birth to a daughter. Under Sharia law she and the child can leave prison if she marries the child’s father but if she leaves prison she is likely to become the victim of an honor killing by her family because she shamed them by being raped.

What’s my point? People need to understand the dangers of Islam and Sharia and it doesn’t seem anyone else is pointing that out. Yes there have been honor killings here in the US but for the most part they were swept under the rug. Where is the Christian outrage?

So when is enough, really enought? Local Business man sells he place and now he want to put it in a small quiet neighborhood. The local golf cart enterprize sole out and now wants to bring ann that into our homes? This is CRAZY! this place is small, he now has a run down nasty looking "mobile trailer" sitting on the property that he says is going to be his office. Are we being serious? or is this a early April fool's joke? This is NOT the area to bring such a place of business into.
Our property values have hit a all time low thanks to the economy and government, if we allow such a place to enter our neighborhood can you imagine what will happen to your value then?
Listen I am all for keeping a strong business going in our community but not at the cost of my home, safety. We the neighbors have to keep a eye on this "eye sore" of a building all the time, without so much as a "Thank You". The cops are always over there because kids break in, or take things from there. In the summer the grass has to be 4 foot high before anyone does anything about it. So is this what our local government is going to allow into our neighborhood? I sure hope not!!!

Anonymous said...

Financial solvency? Being a previous employee of a state program.... the state budget is balanced on paper only.... not in reality.

The reality of the situation is that you don't "accidently" lose and then find that amount of money.

Then a week later the company filed bankruptcy & all the employees lost their retirement package. Then Ole Mitch traveled the Indiana countryside in an RV and won the campaign over Joe Kernan. Now I actually voted for Joe, who is a far better man, as I always vote for the better person, NOT the party. But Mitch is akin to finding "lost" $$$. Do you think he'd actually sell our Toll Road if he didn't have an invested interest? Do you know that upon becoming Governor, he now owns all/most of the Commissary & vending machines in the State Prison System. How do we continually vote for a person who spends 10's of millions of dollars for a job that pays a few 100 thousand? And, WE ALL MUST CALL OUR CONGRESSMAN ON THESE NEW BILLS THAT ARE GOING TO OVER-RIDE OUR CONSTITUTION. They were initiated by Hillary Clinton & NATO, and it's their way of getting their foot in the door to take away American's Rights, & by law bring military action to it's own citizens on our own soil. Regarding the Eyesore...you need to ask to see the permit file and make sure the permit was issued correctly, etc. More people need to be taking steps to stop this sort of thing in the county. We are fighting the county currently regarding the office trailer that got put in on our road under the premise that it was a Type I manufactured home. They gave the wrong permit. We appealed through the BZA and the permit was revoked. Just waiting to see what happens next here...a stop order was issued this week so they are supposed to stop working on it, etc. I'm not giving up. I'm sure the county officials are tired of seeing my name in their email inbox but I'm not stopping until this is done. The trailer should have never been brought in and it does not meet any of the county codes. With regard to the burning, you need to call IDEM. They will come out and they will fine violators. Their numbers on are available online.

If you would believe the federal administration, Right to Work states are suffering economically because of it, a typical lie. These states are actually fairing better in these times then the non-RTW states. Unions are an idea past their times, the protections they fought for are guaranteed by law now. At this point in time, unions are only a lucretive source of income for some particularly shady individuals. The dues the workers are forced to pay only go for lavish life styles for a few, and political funds for others to protect their positions. Really now, does anyone think Mr. Trumpka suffers or has any interest at heart other than his own? Laughable!! Personally, I think it's time for the worker to shed himself of that leash the union ties around his neck, and use the forced dues for his and his family's life, not the use by union goons and corrupt politicians! If you want to be honest about it, there are no more concessions a plant owner/operator can fairly be forced to give up without jeopardzing the job itself.

Pat 16 DEC 7:04 am , I am in agreement with contacting our elected officials and in a perfect world that would do some good. However, I have become weary of the form letter responses and speaking with their arrogant assistants who sometimes want to argue if my view is counter to theirs.

Walking blindly into a buzz saw. I like that. S1867 is ready for BHO to sign and with that the 4th Amendment will become a moot point. All who sponsored that bill and/or voted for it have broken their oaths of office. It doesn’t seem to bother anyone. Little by little those who are supposed to be doing our bidding are gutting the constitution and bill of rights. You may want to go to YouTube and watch Aaron Russo’s interviews. They are very revealing.

What is about to be unleashed upon the American public is Orwellian at best. We have arrived at this point by folks ignoring the obvious and hoping it would go away. Quite the contrary, it has evolved into a monster, the one the founding fathers tried to protect us from. This evolution, on many levels, is frightening. My current concern is how best I can deal with it

Dear Anonymous at 3:20 a.m.

Please be brave enough to put your name behind your words. We (myself and the other 49 residents of Starke County who signed complaint forms) are standing up for what all taxpaying citizens of this county should be standing up for...A better place to live. There is ONE old, run-down house in our mile of road (other than this newest addition), and that house was there long before us. The man that lives there truly cannot afford better.

The new resident is a business owner in the community and certainly can afford better than a salvage unit office trailer that is not even close to meeting code. Since 1995, there have been multiple stick-built homes erected in the mile between 600 East and 700 East on 250 North, and yes...we do refer to it as "our road" because it is where we have chosen to make our homes. However, we have all worked hard for everything we have and have spent the money to build homes that meet code and are safe to live in and do not draw down the values of the properties around us. The property in question is devaluing the entire neighborhood and would make it very difficult for most of the immediate neighbors to sell their homes if they did want to do as you suggest and move. Why should we lose money on our properties (bet our taxes don't get lowered because this was brought in) if we were to choose to simply move away? Why should we have to move so that a slum can move in? This is not to code and should never have been issued a permit. It is not a Type I manufactured home as the owner led the county to believe. Did she intentionally deceive the county just so she could sneak this in? The BZA agreed with us that the unit does not meet the required standards for the permit it was given, and that is why they voted to revoke the permit.

The county has spent a lot of time and our tax dollars (paying for the time of the various commissioners/board members and attorneys to establish, review and approve codes. These codes need to be enforced. This county needs to move forward and leave behind the "redneck", "hillbilly", "good ole boys" reputation that it has earned in the past and do more to attract businesses and responsible homeowners that will build it up rather than bring it down. This is not furthering the reputation this county desires. Why do we want to go backwards after doing so much to get codes established? If we ignore the codes on this unit, I guess we should just throw them out because it would be hard to enforce them on future situations that are remotely like this.

We may as well eliminate the economic development board too. If we all want to live in cardboard boxes, shipping containers and semi trailers, I doubt that you're going to attract any industry that is going to pay anything above minimum wage.

I could go on with more reasons that this is inappropriate, but I do believe I have made my point.

Rod,

I've enjoyed reading your posts on this forum and agree with much of what you say. I honestly have not been very involved in politics and have always tried to vote for the person...not the party. It is often hard to know who to vote for as I rarely know the candidates personally and don't believe most of what I read.

I try to do my research before voting, but am not always happy later with the way that person (if elected) does things.

I get involved when necessary and speak up for what I feel is right when it is something I feel strongly about. This is one of those times. I did not intend to take this issue to the media until I was contacted by the local paper. The reporter had attended a couple of the county commissioner's meetings and contacted me with some questions as a result of the concerns we voiced at those meetings.

I do plan to attend more of the county level meetings so that I can be more aware of the local issues and make better decisions when it comes to voting for members on the various boards. Perhaps, that will lead to more involvement in state/national politics in the future? It is good to expand our horizons!

To Betty First about the older man who lives down the road and can't efford more . How do you know this . Are you his money manager. There are people who don't believe in all the flash and look at me attitude. A home is what is inside not the out side appearence.
2nd Are you the money manager for the people you are pointing fingures at. Maybe they would rather save their money or maybe their bussiness is not doing well .
We live a a world of flash and dash . Look at me I have a big house, new cars and trucks, all kinds of toys and most of you are broke or what is the new saying underwater. Are you one of these ?
Lets look at it this way . Your taxes are high, your upkeep is high , your insurance , is high if you have it. How aboout you payments , anything left at the end of the month.
On the other hand the house you don't want taxes will be a lot less then yours, unkeep less then yours, insurance less and maybe its payed for so they have money in the bank.

While I agree with what you are trying to accomplish I don't think your reference to "rednecks, hillbillies & good ole boys" was necessary or needed. The better part of this county consist of these people, has been built & maintained by this kind of people. Many of the ordinances you are using in your arguments were prepared by these kinds of people. Where do you come from & what kind of people do you think you are? If you feel you are too good for this community then maybe you should move to a more appropriate place. The rules need to be enforced but without the name calling.

To ANONYMOUS who still does not feel the need to state a name:

The man who lives down the road and can't afford more is not older but is disabled from what his family has told me. Oh, and I know his family and have talked to him on several occasions so I do have some personal knowledge. I am not his money manager.

I am also not the money manager for the person who owns the property that is currently being discussed with the county. I do know her personally and do know what she has told me in the past with regard to her finances. If the home is "not about the outside appearance", perhaps you would like to have this structure relocated to your neighborhood? Not having money is no excuse for lack of pride or failure to follow codes and ordinances that apply to everyone in the county.

Are you referring to me having big fancy cars? I guess that would explain the 1999 Jimmy I drive, and that is our newest vehicle. I live in a house that was built by myself and my husband and certainly meets all codes and ordinances. We followed the rules even though there were no codes at the time we moved here and built our home.

You might live in a world of flash and dash. I do not. I buy what I can afford, drive an older vehicle, do without cable tv or satellite and many other things that most people just "can't live without".

My taxes are only high because that is what the government has created for us. I don't believe my finances are really something I wish to air on this blog, but I do not have payments...again people need to live within their means and only buy what they can pay for when they buy it.

Is it fair to ignore codes for some and not others? I think not. The couple directly across the road from the structure were denied a permit for a Heckaman Home when they initially built on their property. The county said no and forced them to build a stick-built home. Heckaman homes are quite nice but their request was denied and yet this other structure right across the street was not?

Also, the upkeep on the structure (it is not a house) that was moved in would far exceed any upkeep on my home. This structure needs so much to bring it to code, that the owner could have bought something far better for what the needed repairs/upgrades would cost.

I highly doubt that there is insurance on this structure since it is currently uninsurable (based on a conversation I had with an insurance professional, not just my opinion). I cannot imagine any insurance company being willing to write a policy for this structure.

Again, if they have money in the bank as you indicate, perhaps they should use it to build an appropriate home that meets codes and follows the rules that have been established by our county planning commission and county commissioners to prevent this sort of structure from being used as housing.

If you wish to continue the discussion, why don't you attend the county commissioner's meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at the court house annex meeting room? I plan to be there. Maybe then you could share your name so I at least know who I am discussing this with.

I do appreciate the opportunity to share my thoughts and bring this to the attention of other citizens of the county that might be interested in attending as well.

Outstanding & no name calling. I agree.

It truly is amazing how many people named Anonymous live in this community.

At any rate, I was not name calling. I was simply sharing the things that I have heard ever since I moved here. Anywhere I have worked (even within the county), people have used these terms to refer to the local residents. It gets to the point where a person gets embarrassed to admit they live here and this type of situation only promotes that reputation. That is all I was saying.

I have a great deal of respect for the citizens who live here and work and support themselves and live a good life. There are a lot of them, but there are others who seem to cause the county to have this type of reputation.

If you look at the plat book, the better part of this county is owned by respectable, hard working farmers and others who have chosen to make something of their lives. These are the people who have developed the codes and ordinances and taken some pride in the community.

I am simply asking for those codes and ordinances to be enforced. I think that should be expected, not something that citizens have to fight for.

With respect to Betty’s dialog, I agree with her observation about anonymous.

We moved here from Kansas City, Kansas knowing full well the reputation Starke County has. (BTW there is only the wife, son and myself as we have no blood relatives that live here) I was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee so I guess that makes me a hillbilly but I do not typify what the term hillbilly might bring to mind. When I speak with people in surrounding counties and they learn I am from Starke County they inevitably give me a peculiar look. I don’t mind and hopefully the conversation we had will in some small way alter their preconceived perception of Starke County.

I know how most people think of Starke County. However, if they would only look at EVERYONE in their own counties, they would see that they have the very same people living there!!! It is mostly the snobby people of neighboring counties that talk trash about us. They need to back off and realize this is no longer true about our county.

To ask anyone to post their full name and address on this, or any other public site is not proper. She stated that she would be attending the board meetings and would love to discuss issues at that time. If you are truely interested in knowing who she is, simply attend one of the meetings to see her. Publishing you full name and address is inviting possible problems with some of the people that read and or post comments here that have less than honerable intentions.

Anonymous said...

One of the best ways to change the opinions that those outside of this county seem to have is rather simple. Attend as many public meetings you possibly can and speak out on the issues. Encourage your friends, neighbors, and anyone you have a discussion with to do the same. Also, at election time, vote for the person BEST SUITED for the positions, not friends and/or relatives. Put people that are willing to do what is best for the COUNTY in the right offices. I attend all the meetings, gatherings, functions, or any other event where the public is welcome in order to stay informed of this counties current events and issues. I try to attend as many functions offered to the public and speak to the officials face to face to get correct information, or the information they are willing to discuss. To simply post complaints here and not follow up on your own words is rather a waste of time. My grandfather has a simple saying relative to taking action.... If your house is blue, but you want it white, there is only one way to get it that way.... get off your butt and get it done. Have a wonderful holiday Starke County. Merry Christmas.

All I'm saying about your name calling & (it is name calling) is that you are alienating most of the community & not helping your case or cause. Because you "was simply sharing the things that I have heard ever since I moved here" doesn't make it right. Most of the world called black people the "n" word however that didn't make it right & they certainly did take it personally & it did & most certainly does alienate them.
Rod Weigel, if you are from TN. you sir, are considered a "hillbilly" by the standards of most of the people of Starke & surrounding counties, like it or not. Hillbillies & rednecks can be & are (in your words) "respectable, hard working farmers and others who have chosen to make something of their lives." It seems that you "have a great deal of respect for the citizens who live here and work and support themselves and live a good life" if they aren't hillbillies, rednecks or good old boys.

I agree that the rules should be followed by everyone & applaud your efforts but not the name calling or your excuse for it.

Seems I need to expand a bit upon my post from 19 Dec 11 10:43 AM.

I personally don’t find the terms hillbilly, redneck or good ole boy offensive. I know I’ve been referred to with those terms and it doesn’t bother me in the least.

I also want to be very clear that I am proud to have been born in the great State of Tennessee the "Volunteer State“ and I am equally proud of my Scottish/Irish heritage from south of the Mason Dixon and my German heritage from Pennsylvania. Both sides were God fearing, hardworking, law abiding and contributing members of society. And each successive generation has built upon their previous generation’s achievements by becoming better educated and more prosperous.

There are two distinctly separate ways of using the term “hillbilly.” One I call guilt by association meaning if one is born in certain States like WV, KY, or TN you have automatically inherited the term as a moniker but that does not preclude one from achieving the American Dream.

The other use for the term is in reference to an uncultured person that has no interest in advancing his station in life.

Let me assure you I do not fall into the later usage.

You are obviously wrong on the term HILLBILLY. My wife's relatives detest being called a hillbilly, as they say hillbilly's are from Mich, Penn, basicly Northern hill regions. Folks in Tenn are called HILL-JACKS. Check it out. Myself, I take pride in my country roots & lifestyle. You can call me backwoods, redbrush, hillbilly...but don't call me late for dinner.

Your demeaning comments is only taking them lower & decreasing the present view that mankind cares very little for their neighbors. So get off your high horse and go help your neighbor, lift them up, encourage them & show that YOU DO CARE.

There were several statements made in the story that stated that I had requested things at the meeting on Monday that I had not. Accurate reporting would certainly be helpful.

Betty said...

To December 21st at 5:38 p.m.

That structure is not a house and needs way more than a can of paint, some lumber and a few nails. If that were the case, I would have been the first one there to help when I wasn't working. However, working 60 hours a week for the last several weeks has not allowed me a lot of time for that sort of thing.

First, they need to get a state licensed engineer in there to evaluate and draw up plans for EVERYTHING needed to bring the structure up to code. Then, there will be extensive work needed and I am not qualified to do that, nor are they.

To the people who keep commenting that we should just let the lady live in her house...it isn't a house and has never been given an occupancy permit so she can't live in it legally until that happens anyway.

Again, if everyone else has to live in homes built to code, why shouldn't these people? There are rules in place and they need to be enforced equally for everyone.

The paradigm shift began on December 23, 1913 (what a coincidence today is its 98th anniversary) and began to accelerate in the 1960s. What once was the right has now drifted left of center to a point where the left used to be and the old left has drifted dangerously close to socialism/communism And the multitudes remain blissfully in their myopic state.

And by the way, Merry Christmas to all .

Betty could not have said it better. We cannot expect people to invest in residential property and build this city if the city does not abide by its responsibility to protect those investments. Property values are shrinking faster than wet sugar in this city. Decreased property values equals less money for city services. Not to mention the crumbling residential infrastructure. The abandoned homes are ripe for drugs and other illegal activity. It is a sad situation but when the elderlym home owner passes away, the homes are so far gone that the relatives don't want them and the abandonment and deterioration continues. That is why we need a full time Code Enforcement Officer. The money and position is in the current budget. There is no excuse for this neglect.

To Long Time Republican Voter. If you want to protect Social Security and other needed programs, it is the Republican Party you want to embrace. The Democratic Party has opened the flood gates for Social Security funds to be used for everything from lower payroll taxes to immagration programs. The Republican Party has fought to protect S.S. for years. It is the Democratic Party that has passed the largest Socialist Healthcare program in history that has driven up insurance premiums for the elderly. They dumped 30 million people into Medicaid while cutting billions in funds. The changes needed to save the program are a result of years of continued Democratic robbery of the Social Security Trust Fund to expand other social programs. Many of which are over burdened by illegal immigrants protected by the Democrats. Taking the If you can't beat them, join them attitude will only exacerbate the problem.

Anonymous said...

To Confused:

The Obama payroll tax cut that you have been hearing about is directly funded out of the Social Security Trust Fund. The Republican fight in the House over its passage was that it should not be funded by Social Security. The wars in Irag & Afganistan have nothing to do with Social Security Trust Fund. The 500 Billion dollars cut from Medicare by the Obama Health care program does. AARP who supported Obamacare has made millions in tax free profits selling supplimental insurance to seniors to cover the higher premiums. When people realize that all the increases in social programs over the last three years has increased the deficit from 1 trillion to 14 trillion. The war in Irag cost $800 billion. The other 12.2 trillion is on Obama programs. Which have nothing to do with George Bush.

The wars in Iraq & Afghanistan have a lot to do with the Social Security Trust Fund. Money was borrowed from the S.S. Trust Fund to pay for them. 18% of all U.S. debt is held by the Social Security Trust Fund. The two main reasons for the current U.S. debt is the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were not funded - historically, taxes are raised to pay for wars. The second reason is that Bush reduced taxes on the very wealthy, while we were in a time of war. It's hard to pay for something (war) if your income is lowered. Social Security currently has a $2.6 trillion surplus. Putting 2% back into the pockets of hardworking taxpaying citizens, really can't be a bad thing. Keep in mind, it in no way affects the income of the very wealthy "job creators".
FYI, Spending on social programs in the U.S. increased 22%, from 2000 to 2005. There was also a 30 % increase in subsidy programs from 2000 to 2008. President Bush added thousands of new federal subsidy programs during his eight years in office, which spread hundreds of billions of dollars annually to special interest groups including businesses.
Also, your figure for the war in Iraq, does not include the increases in spending for Homeland Security, TSA, etc.
Blaming the "Safety Net" for millions of Americans for our current budget deficit, is not very realistic.

Keep in mind that one of his claims to fame was to continue testing, both of standard and NUCLEAR weapons, after being instructed not to by the U.N.
I spent three years in total in South Korea during my military service and was present during the student riots. I can state by first hand knowlage that the majority of Koreans want un OUT of their country. They do not think that we are needed in country to keep peace or protect their people. How can both sides have valid claims unless there is more to the story? As far as Obama goes, how can anyone say he is a good president? Has he done anything besides go on vactaion and tv shows? And why did he let the whole birth certificate issue go on for so long? I know where mine is and could show it right now. I would think that would be a requirement before even running for office.

Randy, I have to agree with your views. Korea is a ticking time bomb. No pun intended.

There is a frightening percentage of American youth who believe: socialism is better than the free market, Christianity is judgmental and just plain mean, America is the villain in world history, we all need the government to take care of us.

Might those beliefs be contributory to the rampant lack of respect, obedience, accountability and moderation?

DO NOT invest Soc.Security in the Stock Market! It just gives the thieves more $ to steal. And we should NOT have been in Iraq. Saddam had no part in 9/11, other world leaders have killed far more of their people, yet we don't go there because they have NO OIL. And WHY are we even in Afghanistan??? Lithium mines? These wars have broke our economy, & 9/11 has broke our trust & self-security. I'm a Rep., & I despise both the Bush's. Crazy how Nixon was impeached(as he should've), yet the Bush's, Clinton & Obama are getting away with FAR WORSE crimes. This Fast & Furious scandal should've sent Obama packing.

The continued authorization of oxycodone prescriptions by our local physicians must stop. An overwhelming number of obituaries listed in our local newspapers are caused by legal prescription overdoses. There are alternative pain medications but the greed of incentives offered by pharmacological companies to doctors outweighs the morality of the honored Hippocratic OATH. Please let your doctor know you don't approve and this is unexceptionable.

"You voted for Obama to prove you were not racist... Now vote for someone else to prove you are not stupid"

Clark Starke said...

No one has to tell you who they voted for or why.Why would someone tell you they voted for Obama after you made a racist joke or comment about him. Maybe they thought you were too ignorant to understand why they voted for him and didn't want to waste their time on you.

Anonymous said...

Good point Clark. I have also had to hold back my opinions when ignorant people make stupid comments. Stupid people like to make stupid comments about our president when they cant admit he was handed a lump of *^/##! by the last administration that had a documented history of ruining everything they touched even prior to taking office.

Anonymous said...

I don't think we got the whole story on why the city turned down money to replace stop signs.

What we need are more stop signs on Main street to break up the racetrack that exist now.

The 25 mile per hour speed limit is a joke just like on the highways where it is 55 or 60, people do 70 or 75 there, here in town they do 40 or 50.

Randy said...

For those who are calling people ignorant and calling others remarks idiotic...... You two must be among those that have not been effected by the current economy. Or have health care issues. Or worry about a job. Or have no tax issues. Or not worry about anathor useless war. Or do not mind our country giving BILLIONS to other countries that hate the United States and use the money WE GIVE them to fund their own military to fight us. And the fact that you lowered yourself to use profanity to try to get a thoughtless point across pretty much made your comment mute. It really does not matter who voted for Obama. We all voted for who we THOUGHT would, or could, make a difference and begin to turn the econmy around. However, now that we have seen his political views and opinions, and more importantly his actions or lack thereof, will you vote for him again. Who ever votes for him in the next election is not stupid, or a moron. I am sure you have your reasons. But being well read on Obama's political agenda is clearly not one of them.

Randy said...

I am not sure that additional stop signs on main street is a good idea. It might make a traffic nightmare. I think a more tangable solution is simply for the local police to more closely monitor the speed of traffic. If just one patrol car was positioned along the route and actually made traffic stops that everyone would see, I believe that you would see a swift decrease in the average speed that drivers travel. But you make a good and relavant point. People only slow down on the route when they see a police car in the area.

sign money..this is the sign sorry from wkvi, the money was to pay an egineering fire for a study, which the town would have to put in $5000, you dont need a 50,000 study to place the signs, the town saved $5000 by turning this down, good job mr mayor and others thanks for saving money.....Mayor Rick Chambers told WKVI that the council agreed to decline the grant because the $50,000 grant required a $5,000 match from the city. That cost, combined with the fact that the grant only covered the engineering aspect of the project, convinced the council to proceed with the project at their own expense.

I am always amazed by people who blame the president for everything. I am not just talking about Obama, but any president. When you have a congress that does nothing but work against you how are you suppose to get anything done? We need to start holding our representatives in Washington responsible for the actions that have taken place.

Clark Starke said...

What does that say about you pal putting up slogans like "if you vote for Obama this time you're stupid".While not being a racist remark it is stereotyping. The first step to racism. I might not vote for Obama this time, but not because of rude, ignorant people like you.If I don' vote for him it's because he promised to get us out of this mess Bush and his buddies got us into, but he didn't deliver(don't know if anyone can). Oh by the way didn't he get Bin Laden and didn't we just officially leave IRAQ.Also not every Obama supporter uses profanity(more stereotyping).

Please be mindful that the contentions illustrated on this bulletin board are exactly what the men behind the curtain want and need in order to accomplish their ultimate goals. Although many of the posts have valid points they are the micro as opposed to the macro problems we face.

Anonymous said...

Okay, as far as Obama goes he was handed a mess. My problem lies with the fact he has done little to help. Sure, he gave the auto industry and banks bailout money, money that was wasted. Why not help by giving it to people to help pay their mortgages. That money would have went to the banks in the long run, and more people would have been able to keep their homes. Why not offer to take a pay cut and advise others in Washington to do the same? I seem to remember reading about a President doing this around the time of the Depression. Enough with the racist remarks too. Could a black person (man or woman) be a good president? Yes. Is Obama doing that? I guess that depends on how you look at what he has (or hasn't done).

Anonymous said...

Randy, Hurts when someone refers to you as stupid. maybe you can learn a lesson from that.

Randy said...

I am not sure where I was "stereotyping" people as you claim. What is the stereotyping. And I never stated that all supporters of Obama use profanity. It was aimed at that particular person. The only name calling and rude remarks were in YOUR post. I believe you read into my postings as you seen fit, not for face value. I am guessing that you are one of the two I referred to in my post.
And by the way, as much as I hate to admitt that Bush did anything good. HE is the one that began the pull out of American troops, and even gave a month it should be done by. Obama just happened to be in office when it happened. Also, the military operation that finally "got" Binladen was in the planning LONG before Obama took office. As I said, it seems you are not aware of Obama's true political agenda.

Randy, Bush was not in office last summer when the Iraq government insisted we leave their country. Someone so well read on Obama would know that. And a military operation to get Bin Laden was in the works long before Obama took office. To bad we didn't know where he was at that time. I really don't think Cheany would have given Obama the spotlight.

Anonymous said...

My posting should have said. I want to see Rod Weigal's birth certificate. He can't be from this country. I can't understand a word he is saying. Nothing personal Rod your a great guy but put your thesaurus in the drawer.

Anonymous said...

You can't have it both ways. If You're going to attempt to give Bush credit for us pulling out of Iraq and getting Bin Laden, even though it's been almost 4 years since he's been gone, then you'll still have to blame him for the economy and everything else.

Anonymous said...

Randy, a cop making traffic stops would be nice, but they can not do it all the time. Why is there no stop signs from up town until the light at Culver?

That is about a mile with out anything to slow down the drivers. They fly over(literary) the railroad track and keep going. It is not safe for kids to play out front of their houses as one might even run up in a yard. Seen that before.
Breaking up this race track would not only would be nice, but should be forced by the people that live on that street and other residents in town.

If I needed a thesaurus to post I wouldn’t and about Obama.

Few get it, most don’t. BHO has been described as incompetent or perhaps inexperienced but he is neither. His agenda of pro-government, pro-taxation and anti-free market smacks of the Cloward–Piven strategy. The current administration’s push for a government that controls every aspect of daily life is obvious to anyone willing to open their eyes.

I’m sure you have all heard the old adage “Birds of a feather flock together.” Consider two of BHO’s closest friends like Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, of WUO fame, who have been pushing this same agenda since the 1960s. One thing about socialists/communists is their persistence and history has proven that usually pays off.

Truth be Known said...

Rod, you left out part of this conspiracy theory few people know about.
The Cloward–Piven strategy that Obama is implementing was first initiated by Ronald Reagan busting the unions during the flight controllers strike in the 1980's. Taking away the ability to earn a wage to support the American family was the first step.It was a brilliant way to make the American people dependent on the government in every way.
Then secretly Corporate America started off-shoring our jobs. Your right, Obama is really smart he had all of this planned perfectly.
Then Obama introduced the Bush Family to the Bin ladden family and covertly planned the 9/11 attacks. This strategy was the perfect plan for invading Iraq. This war would mirror the war in Vietnam perfectly. Obama could send hundreds of thousands of American troops to a far away war, then when they return home they wouldn't have jobs and the disabled would be totally dependent on the government. Back up a moment, I forgot an important fact. Obama would have to make up a better reason for the war. Weapons of mass destruction - perfect.
Obama would then let thousands of illegal immigrants filter across the Texas border and they would take the remaining jobs and lower the wage. Corporate America was already in on the plan. This would make the American people further dependent on the government, they would all lose their healthcare benefits, they might even have to visit the food pantry or get on foodstamps.
This is the part I like. Then Obama conspired with Newt Gingrich, they would have Fanny Mae give the American people home loans they couldn't afford and the value of their homes would plummet with so many foreclosures.
In hindsight, Obama might not be so smart, he made an error when he saved the US automakers and saved millions of jobs, now they wont be dependent on the Government.

Really, stop signs on Main St. This town has been in existance for how many years & suddenly there is a dire need for stop signs on main street? Why don't we just wrap up in bubble wrap & never leave the house??? Life is full of risks & freak accidents & putting a stop sign every 15 ft. or a stop light on every corner is not going to change that. People in their 80's survived without stop signs on Main St. & a lot more so I'm pretty sure we can too.

Anonymous said...

Okay, first things first. Instead of having to put stop signs everywhere on Main St why don't people get a little common sense and slow down. It's free and doesn't require ant work (although I think it takes a lot of work for some people).

Second, there is a problem with the Obama conspiracy theory post. The work "theory" is included. All anyone has to do is look at how things are going and you can see how the government wants to run our lives. Look at all the nuts saying we should take away the Second Amendment. What's after that, the First? We get taxed to death for everything. It's almost to the point where you can't put up a birdhouse without getting a permit.

Anonymous said...

When was the last time the government brought up the second amendment. That's a desperate but expected statement from the ill informed.
No tax increases have been mentioned either just a pay role tax deduction. Deduction means less taxes paid.

Truth be known,
You’re on the right track I wish more were.

Let’s be brutally honest here, this is NOT a conspiracy theory as much as John Q. Public would like to think. The media has placated the status quo with rhetoric, numbing their logic, as usual...

As much as I would like to believe there is hope the reality is those who hold elected office belong to a club that elevates them to positions of authority over all of us and they do not listen or obey what we the people put forth. They think they know what is best for all of us because they believe they are smarter, as in we the people all have faulty thinking. And oh by the way let’s not forget about “The Common Good.”

Also, FEMA has morphed, though that will be denied, from a humanitarian endeavor into a reasonable facsimile of KGB, that is why there was such a delayed response to Katrina. There is video footage of FEMA black-ops forcibly taking citizens weapons and in what situation would one more need to protect yourself and property.

The 1st Amendment is being eroded by unconstitutional hate speech laws, BHO and Hillary want our firearms regulated by the United Nations there goes the 2nd Amendment, yesterday BHO signed the controversial DOD bill (S1967) nullifying the 4th.

2012 promises to be interesting, Happy New Year everyone.
