I feel the biggest reason Dem.'s are against RTW is because the Unions are their biggest campaign contributor. But....can the Rep.'s prove that this will bring home more jobs? I know the original Rockwell left Knox due to union problems, & I know Lobdell Emery left Argos due to union problems, & ironically the same union rep. caused both. But I have alot of proud family members in the Carpenters Union, Laborers Union, Teamsters, & they've always been takin care of, through injury, illness, & most rep.s work hard to keep members employed. I also worked at a non-union shop, blew out my back after 7 yrs, denied workers comp & kicked to the side. Workers Comp is nothing but a mob racket. So to be honest, I would choose to work for a Union Co. 100%. Better wages, better ins., & frankly, far more respect, and we DID work hard. And I'm a Rep., but are the Rep.s pushing this to break the Unions to break the Dem party? I don't know, but there's so many possible alterior motives, that it's hard to know the truth, facts & true motive.

Showing up at someone’s home and protesting, threatening charities and trying to disrupt the world’s largest sporting event aren't very smart ways to win friends and influence people.

No matter what is said the politicans are going to do what they want, even if the small taxpayers of the country want something to help ourselves. I'm sure their are lots of comments for the good that couls be posted for our county. God Bless everyone today.

Warren Buffett, the billionaire calling for more taxes on the rich, said Mitt Romney's U.S. tax rate of about 15 percent reflects poor laws rather than failings by the candidate for the Republican presidential nomination.
"It's the wrong policy to have," Buffett told Bloomberg Television's Betty Liu in an interview. "He's not going to pay more than the law requires, and I don't fault him for that in the least. But I do fault a law that allows him and me earning enormous sums to pay overall federal taxes at a rate that's about half what the average person in my office pays."
Buffett, chairman and chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK/A) , supports Democratic President Barack Obama and said Congress needs to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans to close the budget deficit.

I don't hear much country music on this station these days. I realize it "the best of the best" but I thought maybe there would be some best in country music too.

Does anybody realize how little interest at a rate of 1 percent times one million can equal $10,000 dollars, but take 10 million times one percent and the interest is $100,000. Now consider how the modern banks operate, after Mom passed away, her checking account got down to under $50, the bank took half of it because of inactivity,so I closed it. There are lots of rules that we middle class do not know about except that our $1000 put in a savings account at one percent interest makes $10 to reinvest. One bank's
investment partner got rid of me because I did not have enough invested, so rather than paying me any interest they got extra money and rid of me as a customer. They only wanted the big investors. The banks operate under the laws with so many little fine print that
they have gotten rich on the backs of us middle class. Make very sure what they charge for investing your savings before agreeing to any deal. I just retired and because we had a union they had to give us the rest of our profit sharing money but I had to invest in a retirement fund or it went directly to the IRS as windfall profit. When I started working, I was only 18, so they never included me in their profit sharing until I was 21. It was the days when young men were drafted and sent to 'Nam at 18 and they could not vote for the president who sent them to war. Now consider the millionaires who are running for president, they complain about paying 3 million in taxes but spend more than that of donations trying to get elected. What if the spring and fall election fell on the same date for all 50 states? What if the savings to each candidate was donated to help reduce our national debt? What if the president was elected by popular vote with each voting American being allowed one vote?
Of course, that would stop the media from making lots of money off the election.

An insurance man called wanting to help me plan my retirement, I assured him I was retired and already understood investment. I explained to him that lots of people gradurate from college without any commonsense, but fortunately I inherited some and probably understood my own finances much better than him. I will let him give me his advice, but I do not plan to share my personal financies with him. What I have I earned, and I was taught to save what I will need in the future--it does not have to include fancy clothes or trips but it does include food and shelter.

Obama said last night that we need people to fill jobs and need to be trained. I am all for it. But the one having the money gave to them should study job skills needed in America. Tested and if they are not smart enough, they should look to another job more suited for them. They NEED to find them another one that is less challenging and also needed.
I am sorry but not everyone is going fit for a college education paid for by the US government. Some of the people getting this money are not even ambitious enough to get out of bed and go to school. Perhaps maybe they are not smart enough to set a alarm clock?

How many social workers and people studying criminal justice do we need out there?

If The UNITED STATES pay's for it let it be a needed job. Not money given to people so they can buy a lap top and pay the rent a few months.

To those of you that do make a change in your life with the governments help, Great but many to most are just using us.

Before you all start to Pile on WKVI sports for not covering this or why do you cover that. They have sports check. I hear it in the morning with Tom and Nathan. Nathan covers all the local sports. Including wrestling, swimming, volleyball and other sports. Even a few wrestlers have made Athlete of the week. Here is the link: http://www.wkvi.com/category/sports/tyler-roth-wkvi-athlete-of-the-week/ And here is the link for sports scores: http://www.wkvi.com/category/sports/local-scores/ If you look closely you will see all the scores, not only basketball. Then they have Thursday Sports Talk, Thursday at 6pm. Nathan covers all the sports from the past week, with scores and interviews. Then Harold has Saturday Sportsline. Saturday at 8am. He covers the recent games and talks to coaches and players.

I would also like to comment on the "Best of the Best" comment. WKVI has not used that phrase in 2 years! I have heard a few crossover country songs on the FM. The AM station AM1520 plays country music. Next you will comment on where is Ted and Lou at, I don't hear them much in the mornings anymore.

Also I agree with the other poster.

Get off your keyboards and do something. Run for office, go to meetings and make changes.

Send letters, make the change. Quit being sheep and lead the herd.

So, the RTW bill was passed. So if you work in a union shop but don't want to pay union dues, you shouldn't get the protection or the benefits, right???

The political talk on this discussion board needs to reflect a hint of compromise maybe something great can be conveyed and actually help our community.

In reguards to my "best of the best comment" no I don't listen to WKVI all the time. I do know where Ted and Lou are or are not so there was no need for that. I just thought and I am sure I am right that there are a lot of country music fans in Starke County, it was an observation. They can play what they choose and I can choose what to listen to what I want. Just one more thing I'm not "Dude."

the union dues are already changing to "training fees" so dont worry you will still get to pay the union. but it will draw in more companies looking to under pay the workers, the min wage will have to be stepped, where a factory workers min wage is $14 not the $7.25 teenage mcdonalds wage.

Since the Republicans claim the president has failed in three years time to turn around the financial mess they handed him its only fair to to assume all Hoosiers will have great jobs within the next three years. The Republicans have touted all the great jobs that will be moving here now that Right to Work has passed.

Question: Where was obama, in 2005, when the Bush admin demanded a congressional hearing into the workings of Fannie and Freddie, both a part of the biggest reason for the financial meltdown of this nation. Democrats(Franks, Dodd, Watters, etc) turned this hearing into a love fest for Raines and Jones, who were in fact cooking the books to reward themselves with phony concocted bonuses! Well, obama was a sitting senator at the time and collected the third largest political contribution made by Fannie and Freddie! So I guess he wasn't handed a bad deal by the Bush Admin, he helped in handing it to himself!

I haven’t seen or heard this in the mainstream media.

Apparently some folks are above the law. Yesterday BHO essentially thumbed his nose at a Georgia Deputy Chief Judge’s order to appear in court to defend himself against charges that have been brought against him. He (BHO) claimed appearing would interrupt his official duties as president. I am somewhat surprised he didn’t show as it would have afforded him the opportunity to play a round or two at Augusta.

I read the local news on wkvis page and it truely sickins me to see some of the people being sentenced to home detention and probation the deserve to be in prison. Im tired of hearing about Indianas "Kinder Gentler DOC" and "Alternative Sentencing" If any of the Decision Makers in charge of the DOC ever bothered to go down in the trenches and ask the COs on the frontlines so to speak they would be told this junk dont work and has made no real difference change or improvement, and as for the Community Corrections program here in Starke County there fees are absolutely ridiculas way more than people should be asked to pay which is why some folks turn down house arrest and opt for jail time instead my family member had to decline it as it was NOT affordable. It sounds great when they come to you with a plea offering you this but then you read something to the effect of "on home detention with the Community Corrections Office and any other services or programs they feel you need to be in or go to" and they all cost money. The whole thing is a ponzi scheme to make the county some money they are just playing people by trying to make this seem like a terrific deal for them and its really not its a money pit!It was implimented to help the state save money and keep the jail from over crowding and the worst guy(dennis dates) that was probably ever put on this program ran away and no ones looking for him, tracking him going after him or anything. Sorry but I have no trust in these types of programs I want to be safe at home at nite and in my community and these folks arent and dont give me that piece of mind. They let child molesters, burglars, criminals convicted of battery be on this. These criminals belong in Jail/Prison not next door!

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpao, who houses inmates in tents and makes them wear pink underwear, and feeds them peanut butter and jelly and baloney sandwiches, says if they don't like it there, don't come back!! Incareration is not supposed to be a comfortable vacation, with emenities some taxpayers are without.Joe Arpao is one of a very few handling corrections the right way. Offenders in Indiana arent afraid of or at all worried about going to prison because they have it pretty good,3 meals a day, cable T.V, access to work out equipment the eqivalent to that of a gym, commissary, where they can purchase fast food a couple times a month, game systems and games that rival that of a very well off teenager, free schooling, free medical care, they are even paid to be there yes its only .65 cents a day but still its pay. and now theres talk of suppling them with computers and internet so they can email their families. whats to worry about or be afraid of? Seems to be more of reward than a punishment. Any wonder why they keep coming/going back?

RTW passed, so I hope all HOOSIERS enjoy being slave labor. It wasnt bad enough that Indiana is already one of the lowest paying states that offer employees next to no rights and employers a free pass on almost anything they do now this. The only way this can get any worse is if Indiana lowers minimum wage. Its no wonder that our young people after graduating college relocate to other states Ive heard it time and again and even the sorry Gov. Mitch has said the state has a shortage of professionals no real mystery why they leave theres no reason to stay and those that do are no prize.

to Kindler gentler. I agree 100 % with almost all of your statement except. The county does not make any money on those going through Starke co Corrections . All the money returns to the Correction no the county. I also agree 150% with you crimminals belong in jail not living mext door just waiting for a chance to rob somwone again. Like our sherif has said he could fill a 100 bed jail tommorrow. This county need a new jail large enough to hold all that need to be in it mot letting them walk the streets like the hounest people.

I think the biggest problem unions have is its members are LAZY and SCARED

You have a very good point regarding the brain drain in Indiana.
I have spoke with a lot of different people during the last few months regarding the right to work bill and this is my conclusion.
The people who support this are business owners and people that have a very low paying job and don't understand what decent pay and benefits are about.
Congrats Mitch, you can now compete with the Chinese workforce.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Just how rich is Mitt Romney? Add up the wealth of the last eight presidents, from Richard Nixon to Barack Obama. Then double that number. Now you're in Romney territory.

Anonymous said...

To the Washington AP person. Starke Co is the 2nd poorest county in the state. The right to work bill will only make this worse. My question to Starke Co voters is why would we vote for the party thats not only keeping us at this point but wanting to hurt us more by lowering the earned income of Starke Co workers .

Starke County is the second poorest county in the state, along with other factors regarding health and education being near the lowest in the state! These indicators usually target a county for state and federal funds. I don't see or hear of any of these funds being made available and I wonder why. Are our representatives not doing what we expect them to do, or are we receiving these funds and don't know it!! At any rate, why would anyone vote for a party that doesn't work to raise the quality of life in Starke County?

Shows they are not interested in bettering conditions for the working class.

I hope everyone is happy.Nancy and the Democrats came back so Mitch could ramrod another bill through.Just wish they could have put it on a ballot and let us decide.

Anonymous said...

The democrats returning to the legislature were returning to the peoples business like they were elected to do, not run away because, like children, couldn't get their way. They were not returning heros, but quite the opposite! The union representatives that crowded into public buildings and disrupted business, trampled the law to make a point, intimidated and belittled elected officials and anyone siding against them, were appropriately labeled "goons"! The individuals who claimed to be union member police officers, teachers, etc should be ashamed of the hard earned respect they had and lost! Peaceful demonstration is a right of the people, but this was thugery! Interesting question: of the 22 other states who are RTW, how many have overturned the law and gone back to union control?

Anonymous said...

those RTW supporters over look the fact that working people need to earn a decent wage so we can continue to pay for them ( social security, disability, welfare ect) and bring home enough to live on ourselves. I completely agree with the comment about hoosiers being slave labor, our only hope now is that the new Governor come November can/will fix just some of Mitchs screw ups. I know I will be voting Democrat. Indiana cant afford or take another republican

Anonymous said...

What a bunch of whiners. I have never held a union job or went to college, but I have always maintained and above average wage, and earned that wage because I deserved it not because I paid someone to protect me. Face the facts if you do your job like you are suppose the rewards will come!!

Anonymous said...

Those who are against the RTW law are not whiners. They are telling it like it is. Nancy and the other Democrats were NOT acting like children who did not get their way, they were trying to do what the people who elected them wanted!!!!!

Anonymous said...

It is sometimes hard to see the forest for the trees. We would like to think our elected officials always have our best interests in mind, and hard to think that they would do anything that would bring us discomfort. But the fact is, by supporting unions, and union backed legislation, elected officials are rewarded with campaign funding, usually 50% of funding! That makes the union their constiuents, not the people. And we the people get to gather around and drink the kool aid of long ago victories of workers over the evil manufacturers. Meanwhile, unions like SEIU and AFSCME create civil disorder and disruption to accomplish the bidding of thier masters, paid for with union dues! When you are asked if you are any better off now then you were 3 years ago, include your standard of quality at the work place. Money is the bottom line, in this case dues money, and the control of which brings power. With the lack of integrity and character of our politicians, which is not limited to Washington, money easily finds it's way to receptive pockets. Don't just listen to union officials or politicians, from either side, look at your tax returns over the past years and see if you have actually improved your quality of life, and was that gain(if any) due to union benefit or your deligence and hard work!

Anonymous said...

To Anonymous, JANUARY 30, 2012 6:10 AM
You are correct the unions collects money from members and contribute to labor friendly political agendas {typically Democrats)that will represent workers. The other side of the coin is the Republicans receive campaign fund from big business. If unions are gone who will represent the working people? We abolished slavery once and now the opportunity will exist for all wages to be lowered further.

Please read the following from the Washington Post
Inequality in the U.S. has has grown steadily since the 1970s, following a flat period after World War II. In 2008, the wealthiest 10 percent earned almost the same amount of income as the rest of the country combined.

Now the GOP Presidential front runner is one of the top 1%.
Will he represent the working class? He has always represented himself. The last Republican President sure messed things up for working people.
A few trees knocked down for you. Hopefully you can see into the forest. The rich will take anything they can from ------YOU

unions also donate to fund abortions. there allready have been law suits so the memembers of unions did not have to pay in if the unions donated to things you are against, they won and the union memembers already didnt have to pay. the right to work was to lower the average pay and to make people more dependent on the government.

Anonymous said...

Since the residents of Indiana are so miss lead and support elected officials that vote for things that can only hurt the large majority of residents perhaps we should be known as Indiana Idiots instead of Hoosiers. Why is it that Ohio and Wisc. are and can recall its elected as can other states but Indiana has nothing in place allowing its voters the same benefit. WE should have that same right our elected officials need to be held accountable to us the people. Why not put RTW on the ballot and leave it to us to decide. Why must Republicans always cheat to win like they did with re districting and now with RTW which is just them trying to make sure that Democrates lose any backing and support from unions while they continue to collect from big business and enjoy the kick backs and perks they get from thier business buddies? Changes need to be made and SOON!

Anonymous said...

Oh how some people love to whine and cry when they can't have their way! Oh big business is killing us(when in fact it's providing you with paychecks), oh we need recall elections (you mean the last one was illegal), oh we'll lose the unions because of RTW,(you mean they're in it for the money only), oh there is inequality of finances,(we don't punish success, go work for more equality), oh the republicans are going to take away our govt money, (again, go to work, and minimum wage jobs are not beneath dignity), oh why aren't the representatives responsible to the people,(they are, it's called elections, some every two years, go vote), oh the republicans just cheat all the time, (right, which is why democrats don't follow the Constitution, like the president who has trampled our Constitution since day 1)!

Anonymous said...

RTW or NO RTW, the Union Dues should not be given, in any way, to someone in office or seeking office. It's clearly shady, because it's only Democrats that get these "Donations". I thought the dues are used to "protect the worker", and make the workplace better, NOT elect a congressman. One word: SHADY. Why should a republican worker have to pay "union dues" to elect a democrat?

Anonymous said...

you cant put RTW on the state ballot. just remember who the smart people of the state put in as president

Anonymous said...

So you say that unions support democrats and that's why they "fight" so hard for Unions. That theory would explain why Republicans "fight" so hard for big oil,and Wall street. That's where all their big donations come from.Either way working people don't have a chance.

Anonymous said...

Well,Jan.30,11:39am,lets say that a Democrat works in a non union business that is owned by a Republican. This Democrat will work to make a profit for the owner and he in turn will use some of that profit to support a Republican candidate. Isn't that the same thing you are saying about the Republican working in a union place????

Anonymous said...

Almost half of the states in the US have a RTW law. Gee, can't really be that big of a deal, unless your a union big wig. Probably most people never heard of it until last year when Wisconsin passed it, and there doing pretty well. Business is business and that's what Mitch is, a business man. At least we're doing better then Illinois and Michigan. (Democrat states, just saying)

Anonymous said...

You're exactly right Mitch is a businessman. What better way to help you're "business" along then push a bunch of bills through that will benefit you greatly once your back in the private sector. Why would he run for president? He's got such a sweet deal set up for himself here.

Anonymous said...

Rtw is here, it will be passed by the senate this week, and signed by the governor, end of story! All the bill states is that mandatory union enrollment is not required anymore in employment, a worker does not have to pay dues to an organization who, among other things, finances a certain political party and it's politicians, and shows up at legislatures and polling places to bully, intimidate, and terrorize people into their way of thought!! Oh dear, we might lose our fair wage, or lose union protection on the job. Well, not true, the union will still be there, and you may have to voluntarily donate your dues. But listen to the stories by the Ford plant retirees about how little work they did while the union allowed them to screw the company. Sounds to me like the company has long needed protection from the union. This is not a novel concept, but you have the right to work, and the company has the right to expect some work out of you!! The mentality of "that's the way it's always been" is over for this aspect of life. There's a new day dawning! And again, the big test for RTW is this: how many RTW states have overturned the RTW legislation and gone back to union control? (hint: the answer is none!)

Anonymous said...

Henry, The dems use scare tactics when the Rep propose insane ideas that leads to the decline of the middle class.
Maybe the middle class haven’t seen a rise in wealth for the last ten year because almost half of the states are RTW.
#12 If you are buying a $50,000 car you must be quite well off. You can purchase many American made vehicles manufactured by Union employees for around the $20,000 range. The UAW workers compromised a few years ago and gave up pay so the US auto industry could survive. The GOP needs to learn to compromise so our nation can survive.

Check you facts on other right to work states . The jobs that do come are low paying no benifits or seasonal. The people who have their pay cut not won't spend as much money so the net gain will be 0 or nonmeasurable
