VOTING INFORMATION
The deadline for all voters to register for the primary election that will be held on Tuesday, May 8th, is by 4 PM Friday, April 9th. If you are 17 years of age but will be 18 on or before November 8, 2012, you are eligibile to vote in both the primary and the general elections, but you must be registered in order to vote.
If any voter has moved to a different residence since November 2010, you should notify the voter registration office at 772-9160 and report your new address. Your move might have placed you in a different precinct where you should now vote on election day. Report your move by calling 772-9160.
If you have changed your name since November 2010 by marriage, divorce or any other reason, you too should report this to the clerk at 772-9160.
Love one another. Treat others as you would want them to treat you. Then, write your comments.
WHAT IS A PRECINCT?
Starke County is divided into 9 townships (California, Center, Davis, Jackson, North Bend, Oregon, Railroad, Washington, and Wayne). The number of registered voters in each of the townships is divided into precincts so that no more than 1200 registered voters are grouped together into a precinct.
Four of these townships (Davis, Jackson, North Bend, and Railroad) have less than 1200 registered voters and they have only one precinct. Two townships (California and Washington) have two precincts. One township (Oregon) has 3 precincts. Wayne township has 4 precincts and Center township has 6 precincts.
It is important that every voter knows the township and the precinct where they are registered to vote on election day. If you do not know any of this information call the voter registration office at 772-9160 and they will assist you.

I just heard that Sysco, the global leader in selling, marketing and distributing food products to restaurants, healthcare and educational facilities, lodging establishments and other customers who prepare meals away from home, is going to locate a huge distribution center in Starke County. It will create more than 500 jobs. We will all be rich........(april fool).
Only polite caring remarks will be made this month. APRIL FOOLS
EARLY VOTING
Everyone has the opportunity to vote prior to election day on the voting machines in the Starke County Clerk's office located on the second floor of the courthouse. You do not have to give a reason for voting early. You need only to display your Indiana driver's license, your voter ID card, or your passport. You will then sign the poll book and then you will vote on the voting machine. If you want to avoid parking problems, waiting in long lines and other problems that you might encounter on election day at your precinct polling place, this will eliminate these problems. VOTE EARLY!!!!
The schedule for early voting is as follows: Beginning on April 9th at 8 AM and running until 12 noon and again from 1 PM to 4 PM and it will continue daily until Monday, May 7th at noon.
There will also be some evenings when voting is also available from 5 PM to 7 PM on these dates:
Tuesday, April 24
Thursday, April 26
Tuesday, May 1
Thursday, May 3
There will also be voting on these Saturdays from 8 AM to 12 noon:
Saturday, April 28
Saturday, May5
Hey Tom,
What is a "Forgotten 45"? You've only told us 10 million times. I know I only went to the 8th grade, but even I get it.
EARLY VOTING is available to all registered voters who live in Starke County. The voting machines will have the ballots all 21 precincts. Avoid the long lines, parking problems, and other problems that you have previously experienced on election day when you voted at your precinct. VOTE EARLY!!!!!
Hey, leave Tom alone. He does a great job on the radio. Maybe someone tuning in for the first time doesn't know just what a forgotten 45 is!!!!
I find it interesting that the booking picture of the teacher arrested wasn't on the website along with the story of his arrest. Pictures are always there when someone is arrested for drugs, theft, etc. Special treatment because it's a teacher???
Many of Tom’s Forgotten 45s were never on a 45 rpm record.
I think he should do forgotten 8-tracks.
Reply to April 2, 2:14, who said, "Maybe someone tuning in for the first time doesn't know just what a forgotten 45 is" Lets say that a million people have heard something repeated 10 million times. Do you repeat it again because maybe someone new has just tuned in and maybe hasnt heard it yet. Also, even if they never heard of it before, do you think that they could maybe figure it out. Kinda self explanatory dont you think? I like Tom in the morning too, but he aint perfect.
A million people listen to WKVI?! I'll take that!
What seems to be the hold up with getting the minutes posted from the February and March meetings of the Starke County Council? The Commissioners seem to be posting their minutes in a reasonable fashion. Who is in charge of this? Perhaps they need some extra help.
Hey, Mary Lou, yeah, I might just repeat something I've heard 10 million times if I thought someone else hadn't heard it!!!!!!
To: Carl Childers
Is it possible they (council)do not want public asking questions?
Most of the boards don't post the minutes now until after they are approved at the next month's meeting. The commissioners have at least two sets of minutes that have been approved for March meetings that have not yet posted.
Agendas seem to get posted the day of the meeting if they get posted at all. The BZA agenda for February never did get posted to the web. The Dec. 1st agenda was there until a few days prior to the March 15th meeting.
Where do they post the minutes of the meetings?
The minutes have to be approved? By who? And why for that matter.I would think whatever is discussed should be posted. To approve them implies to me that they are possibly edited. I don't want to read an edited version of what took place at the meetings. I used to go to as many meetings as I could, but now due to health issues I just read about them on this website. Please post the minutes!
I wonder if the county would mind if I picked up all of the STOP signs in the county and took them to the junk yard for the money as nobody pays any attention to them
We agree with Mr Childers . If the minutes written are different the the recorder minutes whos hideing what . I think the person asking for the correction and the person doing the correction names should appear in the minutes.
It would seem two months is rather long for posting of council minutes. Why has council president not requested they be posted? Why does everything in goverment in this county have the appearance of coverup?
I don't know who is responsible for the minutes finally being posted but I would like to extend my gratitude. If the minutes from the March meeting have to be posted in April, I will look forward to that when the time comes. Once again, my deepest thanks.
Minutes have to be approved for accuracy by the members that attended the meetings. The minutes posted are not word for word what took place by any means...very much a summary edited and approved by the board attorney I would imagine. The minutes of the last two BZA meetings are very vague in comparison to what the court reporter I hired has in her official transcripts.
We attend all county meetings now and plan to continue to do so. We have learned a lot about who we will be voting for in the upcoming elections and how the county operates.
http://www.co.starke.in.us/
This is the link to the starke county web page. Minutes are posted under the various board headings. Meeting dates and times are posted to the right side of the page.
Wait a minute! Am I reading this right? The Council minutes report that the Sheriff is paying for an attorney out of the his departments commissary fund. Does anyone else find this to be highly unethical not to mention illegal? I sincerely hope this is not another elected official choosing the wrong path.
http://www.co.starke.in.us/
Thanks for the information. I found it all.
I believe the Sheriff can use commissary fund for whatever he wants. He spends it at his own discretion and no body checks what it goes for
An entity treads dangerous ground when it declares a group as untouchable and above reproach, and protects it's decisions from observations of the public. It begs the answer to which, the entity or the group, fears the test of scrutiny.
There are a couple of things I don't understand in the recent comments. Betty D writes that her own stenographer has her own
"official" transcripts of the meeting. Aren't the approved minutes the only, single "official" record of the meeting. There can't be two "official" records - only one.
The public one. Elsewhere, doesn't the Sheriff have at least some discretionary authority over spending? And isn't he doing the right thing by reporting the change in spending in the meeting, to be recorded in the "official" minutes for all who care to look?
The commissary fund is used at the discretion of the Sheriff but those are regulated by State Statue. Im positive that paying for an attorney for anything outside the scope of his job(i.e lawsuits from inmates etc.)is not allowed but has been paid out of the commisary fund and even admitted by the Sheriff in last months Council Meeting. I think the Council and Commissioners should investigate this like they did the Treasurer's Office.
Read minutes of Feb.council meeting and would like someone to answer a couple questions. First I understand the sheriff first stated that his attorney was filing lawsuit for free. Then I understand Mark Smith stated he didn't know any attorney who would do this for free and insisting tht sheriff state where money was coming from,at which time sheriff ststed he was paying it from commissary fund.Earlier post say's that is illegal,if so why did council disregard? I also understand that at last meeting Arnett questioned where $180.00 filing fee came from. Sheriff stated there was no filing fee, which was untrue. Are we the citizenry of this county to believe that the Easter Bunny came early and paid this fee or the sheriff's attorney thinks so much of our sheriff he paid that fee out of his own pocket.Houston we do have a PROBLEM
Marvin McLaughlin (not sure I'm spelling that right) stated at the March Council meeting that fees are waived when it is a public agency such as the sheriff's department filing documents in court and that the $180 fee was likely waived.
I hired a court reporter to cover our BZA hearings on the advice of our attorney as those transcripts are admissible in court and can be used in an appeal. The court reporter records the meeting word for word. The minutes taken by the BZA secretary do not.
You can purchase recordings of any of the county meetings in the office in charge of that board for $10 per CD (one CD per meeting). These are public record so anyone can obtain them upon request. You do need to request them prior to going to the office so they have time to make a copy for you.
If Sheriff Cowan used Commisary money for attorney fee's, that's misappropriation of funds, which is as illegal as the lady taking money from the Tourism Dept. The commisary fund has been an issue of great debate for many years, as with the food perdium. With what the inmates eat, there's no way all the State funded money get used, not that I care if they're eating rib-eyes, but it definitely shouldn't be ending up in somebody's pocket.
With the extra $$$ that the State of Indiana has found and is appropriating to every town, can this be used to save OD Schools? What about putting the extra $$$ into a fund towards the Starke County Recreational Center?????
The minutes should be public there should be only one official record of the minutes and they should be available in a timely fashion. There should be NO waiting for any approval. This county has so many problems Ill never understand why the state doesnt investigate more of what goes on here. First this and the whole issue with the sheriffs dept and the commisary funds. Where is the checks and balance system that should and is so badly needed here.
I'm not sure why my post did not show up that I sent last night, but I guess I'll try again. I can't think of anything I said that would have been improper for this blog.
It was stated during the council meeting that the $180 filing fee was most likely waived by the court since it was a county entity filing the documents.
As for the court reporter's version of the BZA hearings...I hired a court reporter on the advice of my attorney because a transcript from a licensed court reporter is allowed to be used in the event of an appeal through the court. The transcript provided by this service is word for word--everything that is said in a hearing or meeting. The minutes online by the various agencies are not word for word.
If you ever want to obtain the audio recordings of the meetings, you can do so by purchasing them through the office responsible for the minutes for $10 per CD. Each CD is one set of minutes.
It is basic parliamentary procedure that minutes from an official meeting are voted on and approved at the next regular scheduled meeting. I would assume that all of our official boards are using some form of parliamentary procedure even if it is not followed strictly. The minutes should not be posted until after the next regular scheduled meeting.
Minutes: IC 5-14-1.5-4

Commisary money (Fund) Please reference IC 36-8-10-21. After doing this you will have the correct answers not the street lawyers version. Education is the tool to success.
Out of all that State money that was found, Starke County gets 300 thousand while the counties around us get millions. Once again Starke gets screwed by the State.
really starke county gets less because we have less people less gnp and that is only fair. now to the od issue there is a propaganda flier cirrculating now it say vote yes dont let the pic od the kids fool you if it was about the kids we would not be having this conversation but it is about the peopole that work there and not the kids look at the dept of education website as there was a conversation with several school board members the other day they do not even know the facts as were they told that the graduation rate of od was below surronding schools they argued with me until they looked at the state website and they realized it was correct so look at the facts then VOTE NO !!!
The money back to the counties is based on what was paid in by each county. We have a lot of unemployed people collecting benefits that are not paying in a dime. That is why we get less.
http://www.wkvi.com/schools/oregon-davis/department-of-education-releases-graduation-rates-oregon-davis-over-90/
In 2010 OD graduation rate was over 90% according to WKVI website.
http://www.wkvi.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/2010_grad_rates.pdf
Any data can be twisted however you want it to be and people can say and post whatever they want to.
2010 Graduation Rates (according to link provided)
OD had 91.5%
NJ 78.6 %
Knox 73.3
So how are you getting that OD graduation rate is lower then the area schools???
Thanks to the staff for having the incorrect time for the easter egg hunt at wythogan park. Originally was at noon on the 7th then was announced the next morning to be at 2pm on the 7th. My grandson had already attended a egg hunt but the looks on the childrens faces that hadn't or have no other means was very dissapointy. Maybe wkvi should sponsor something for the children.
The schools in Starke county have comparable graduation rates, but the rates quoted here do not match those posted on the department of education website. If you go to the DOE website, you can see data for the past 3 years, and you can see how numbers fluctuate.
when you only have 50 seniors in a school and 2 kids do something up or down, the % greatly changes.
The FACTS about the graduation rate in Starke County.
The fact is in the last three years OD has a higher graduation rate then the other Starke County Schools.
Avg for last 3 years
OD 89% Knox 78% NJ 78%
2009 OD 88% NJ 75.8 Knox 78.3
2010 OD 91.5 NJ 78.6 Knox 78.3
2011 OD 88 NJ 80.5 Knox 82.8
Source: http://www.doe.in.gov/improvement/accountability/graduation-cohort-rate
From the IN DOE website
So to the person that brought it up... if you want people to vote based on the graduation rates then VOTE YES!
A check of the Ind State DOE website shows that approx 80% of children graduated in Starke County over the past 3 years. That may sound okay to some, but the opposite of that figure is approx. 20% did not graduate. That figure is atrocious, and not something to be proud of! That is really sad.
Tom & Lenny were suppose to be eating twenty dollar burgers in half an hour. It wasn't broadcast, so how did it go? If they could not eat it all in the time alloted, who paid for their burger? Unless a person is very well off most are not going to buy a burger for $20. So did WKVI pay for their lunch on Saturday, or did those two men pay for their own which probably would feed them two meals. Did they get a printout on the amount of calories and fat is included without extra charge. I am sure some your WKVI dedicated listeners would like to know if you both ate all of your food on Saturday!
This website can be used to compare schools including graduation rates, ISTEP scores, and AYP results over time.
http://mustang.doe.state.in.us/SEARCH/search.cfm
According to this site OD has the highest graduation rate of all the Starke County schools, and has had consistently for a number of years.
if yo go the site as mentioned http://www.doe.in.gov/improvement/accountability/graduation-cohort-rate
it shows that o-d rate is down from the prior 2 years considerably
2011 2010 2009
Oregon-Davis School Corp
80.0% 91.5% 88.0%
North Judson-San Pierre Sch Corp
80.5% 78.6% 75.8%
Knox Community School Corp
82.8% 73.3% 78.3%
then we have john glenn
97.7% 92.6% 91.8%
so there you have it the facts
It appears we need to study what John Glenn in doing and institute it in all of Starke County schools. If this set of figures doesn't shame the teachers in Starke, it should!
Regardiing the OD tax issue if the tax rate is based on the max levy if we all vote no then od is absorbed by another school district how can the tax rate go up if we dont vote on an increase in the levy ?
Are you collecting a social security check or medicaid benefits?
The highest graduation rate in the state belongs to New Prairie. The high school principle is a North Judson grad. And hold on to your seats, when the annoncement for head football coach is announced in New Carlise, yet another North Judson grad and legend.
Glenn take a seat.
Top of the NSC = New Prairie
Congrats to Liberty Elementary on being an "A" school.
Poverty rate to graduation rate is an interesting twist and of course number of students.
To the person that said Knox teachers should be ashamed is just trying to blame someone else for their mistakes...I can guarantee we could follow Glenn or New Prairie's teaching methods and we wouldn't be any better. So many of our parents in Starke county are lazy and want everything for free and the kids follow in their footsteps. I am sure more parents in those districts make sure their kids work hard and get them help if needed. Parents here also blame coaches for the athletic teams. Knox could hire Phil Jackson for basketball coach and Bill Belichick for Football and nothing would be any better. The reason is parents here build their kids up to be the best when they are in youth sports and want them to be the star in pop warner where it is easy to run trick plays or in basketball where they shoot everytime. Then when they get in high scool they actually have to work hard and end up quitting because those trick plays don't work and the other kids got bigger and faster and the parents blame their downfalls on coaches and teachers. While those other schools get beat by Knox when they are like 9 years old, Knox gets dominated by the time they are at a varsity level. Knox needs to open the gym and the weight room all year to the parents and students. Everyone needs something like that in this town. Make it so the student can only use the facility if their grades are above average and they attend school regularly and stay out of trouble. Am I the only one who thinks this?
The point I was trying to make is that the influence the teachers have the children from day one, is immeasurable, regardless of how lazy the parent is. What is seldom realized is that for some of these children, the only quality time they enjoy is what they receive in school. So many fall through the cracks because their talents are not recognized for one reason or another. Children are children regardless of area of residence. A graduation rate in the 90%tile can be attained anywhere and everywhere!
Great post. Parents do something. Community open gym and weight room is a great idea.
Attitude, along with parenting is everything.
Unfortunately, we all follow the exact same education protocol I.e. communism, so your point of comparing grad rates and athletic performance is spot on.
North Judson has the same problem with sit on their hands parents, no gym/weight room time for anyone and one terrible football coach.
A thought on the 200 million the state happened to stumble upon : could it have to do with a recent Indy star front page, declaring the super bowl cost less than expected. I believe the money could have been set back just in case the city of Indianapolis took a hit on the big game. As we have seen the money is being alotted back, with Marion county receiving the lions share. I believe the amount coming back to every county is correct, just not the narration.
EARLY VOTING IS IN PROGRESS AT THE CLERK'S OFFICE IN THE COURT HOUSE ON THE SECOND FLOOR. VOTE NOW AND AVOID LONG WAITS ON ELECTION DAY AT YOUR POLLING PLACE. ANY VOTER LIVING IN STARKE COUNTY WHO IS REGISTERED AND HAS A VALID VOTER IDENTITY CARD MAY VOTE FROM NOW UNTIL NOON MAY 7TH DURING NORMAL COURT HOUSE HOURS. FOR EVENING AND SATURDAY HOURS REFER TO MY PREVIOUS ITEMS I POSTED EARLIER THIS MONTH.
I agree with your post about parents and school. It is easy to coach them and make them play when they are young but by the time they get in high school they have to work harder and then they wanna get a boyfriend/girlfriend and eventually half of them quit sports all together. Some people hate sports but drop sports and then see how nuch further the grad rate goes down. We have such a nice facility why couldn't the school board have someone open the weight room and gym 3-4 times a week for adults and kids? I think it is a great idea and it would some kids out of trouble. I don't see how school board members can use the facility for themselves or their family but the taxpayers can't use it at all? Even if you charged $1 for parents everytime they came? 30 parents x $1 20 times per month is $600. I am sure a teacher/coach would love to make $600 more a month for 40 hours of work every month. Someone needs to get on this and change your old fashion selfish ideas. I am sure someone will complain about insurance or some other excuse we don't believe. The high school has 600 kids running up and down stairs or in gyms every day or hundreds of people at a sporting event up and down bleachers so if you say it is cause of insurance it just shows you want to stay with the same old ways and keep having the same stupid excuses.
I am so happy someone brought this up cause I have been wondering why it couldn't be opened to everyone in the district even if there was a small fee. Someone please answer me this. If I am on a bank board do I get a key to the bank and get to go inside and use it whenever I want after hours? Ok.....What would a school board member need with keys to the school and why do they get to use the school, along with family members, for their own use? Just wondering....
To thoses who are makeing excusses for the low student average grades. Sports open gym, weight lifting have little or nothing to do with good grades. Parents have the greatest impact on our childres furture. Our education system is far from perfect but its all we have right now. How many of the parents complaining about our schools have gone to school, met with the staff set in the class room with their children , my guess few or none. Take a look back at history . How many of the great leaders were in sports in highschool and college. I think you will find it was very few. They studied hit the books hard had home work ect. They didn't have time for sports because sports were not going to make them successfull in the adult life and they and their parents knew it . It somehow always goes back to home the parent.
If a student is capable of being a great sports person and a excellent student also then they and their parents made the system worked for them and we all will benifit, but this is a rare case in todays world.
Parents do have an impact too but.....high school athletes outscore their peers in leadership ability measure, have better social reasoning skills, they learn to work as a team and assist others. If you make it thru a season of wrestling, basketball or football you would know that some things in life you thought were hard weren't all that bad. To answer your question about what great leaders were in sports here are just a few if you count presidents as a great leader: Grover Cleveland, Roosevelt, Ike, Kennedy, Ford, Carter, Reagan, both Bush's and Clinton. That is just presidents! I am sure some of them would have never learned the skills if not for sports and if we started listing business leaders the number would be really high. If you don't like sports that is fine but that doesn't mean others can't enjoy them.
For 3:56am. After reading your post I think maybe you should have been in sports and then you might have had to pay attention in spelling class....
Wrong
Santorums out, that's wonderfull. Gingrich is all but done and broke. We can not vote for a guy who belongs to a cult.
The only man to vote for in the first place, is going to be the one left standing : Dr. Ron Paul.
Vote Ron Paul for president.
Spaghetti Dinner Benefit for Chip Mann is this Saturday April 14th. At New Hope Baptist Church on South Roosevelt Rd/350 E. Knox, 4-7pm. tickets. $8 adult, $4 kids, and 4 and under eat free. Also a bake sale. tickets at the door or call 772 4239
Everyone who complains about kids being in sports. Where they ever in sports. I know several kids that were top of their class and played football, basketball, track and still were at the top of their class. Kids have to have passing grades to play sports. So people quick knocking our kids. Sports is great.
THIS TOWN IS FULL OF NEGATIVITY COULD WE PLEASE HAVE ONE DAY THAT EVERYONE COULD GET ALONG AND BE NICE TO EVERYONE AROUND THEM HAVE FUN GO TO THE KNOX PARK AND WATCH THE KIDS PLAY BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL AND SAY THANK YOU TO ALL THE WONDERFUL COACHES THAT DONATE THERE TIME TO GIVE TO THE KIDS YOU MAY ACTUALLT CATCH THE BASEBALL/SOFTBALL BUG HAVE FUN
I have coached MANY youth sports in Starke Co., & the biggest problem, BY FAR, are non-supportive, lazy parents. They couldn't afford the necessary gear, or even take their kid to practice(which I also served as team bus), but they always could afford their cigarettes,i-phones & other unnecessary junk. It all starts in the home, discipline, morales, integrity..EVERYTHING. There are so many parents, teachers & even high school kids that volunteer with open gym, weight lifting, every sport, even tutoring for grades. It's not hard to see which kids parents are negligent, or drug users. I see kids parents with a different "partner" every other season(or more), is that where they learn commitment? People are out there that CARE VERY DEEPLY ABOUT ALL THE KIDS. Sports are great for kids. They learn comradery, commitment, accountability, setting goals & victory..as well as accepting defeat. And it's far better than kids becoming stagnant, sitting on a couch playing video games.
if you let the village raise your kids you end up with a bunch of village idiots.
ANYBODY who knocks the sports, the organizers, the coaches or the players is JUST RUNNIN THEIR YAPP & DOESN'T KNOW ANYTHING. You have no idea how much work goes into every sport, soccer, softball/baseball, youth football JUST TO GET STARTED. Then there's making sure the kids have necessary gear(which I've paid for myself countless times), & even paid for the registration sign-ups for families who weren't able. Then, their's maintaining the fields(BIG JOB), & then the countless practices just to get ready for the season. AND WE DON'T EVEN WANT ANY CREDIT. It's ALL about the kids. I am so proud of how hard they work & support each other, & these kids want to win so bad...the right way. They're always great sports, win or lose. So honestly...it really raises my faith for the future of the community when I see the caliber of kids workin their tail off. So ANYBODY disrespecting the adults/kids of these programs is obviously just a negetive person, & has nothing positive to contribute. Sad way to live life.
Right on
WKVI is to be commended for mentioning the Turkey Trackers organization which will happen in this area in two weeks. This organization makes our county's people proud to welcome people into our county who would not have the opportunity to hunt otherwise. It helps people whose situation in life really limits their ability to have fun. It is a cause started by a young man who has passed away, but his mother and family keep up the event now in his memory. It knocks out all of the negative people's opinions, because except for God's grace we could all be handicapped. Please remember to pray for the Corey family and this event.
Did anyone between 9 and 10 pm last night (friday 13th) see a weird strange light traveling really fast down the side of hwy 35 starting at SIBOS then heading toward 30. It was too tall to be an atv or vechile. Could u please let me know if i was the only one whom seen it?
WKVI's story on the Turkey Trackers is a good story about an organization founded by a young man in whose memory his family is continuing it. It brings together people of all ages from all areas to Starke County with serious health problems that would otherwise prevent them from hunting wild turkey. They are helped with volunteers to hunt and have fun on a Saturday. They will have a banquet free to the public in which those taking part are given equipment to use during the hunt. It does not cost them anything, and those hunting are paired with volunteers for the day.
It is an organization that all of us in our county and out of it should be proud to speak about whenever somebody only points to negative events that are forever happening.
Taylor Kemble is having a Garage SAle on May 5 at the Knox United Methodist Church. All proceeds will go to the Drew Shearin Scholarship Fund. If you have things to donate drop them off at the church after 3:30 on May 3rd and 4th.....
Yeah I saw those lights. Three across with the middle one the largest. Once they turned from white to yellow to white again. I was outside but I didn't hear a sound. Very strange. Must have been going over 100 mph.
Tom, Tom the Turkey Man ought to get a turkey goobler outfit so he will be ready for the upcoming turkey season. There is a shortage of turkeys to hunt this season, so hunters might get some practice in if Tom Berg is a good runner. People might donate to watch, it would help some good cause in this area.
Yes I have seen strange lights a week before and someone seen lights in the early morning March 15th posted here.
Ones saw March 15th made no noise either but it was morning. Anyone else saw lights please post here.
Some lights were hovering over downtown Knox for about a minute, then went straight up about a mile in 5 seconds, then went out to U.S. 30, then went two different directions, one to the west and one to the north. Never heard a sound, and I wasnt drinking either.
REPORT ON IN-OFFICE ABSENTEE VOTING
As of last Friday night at closing time in the courthouse there had only been 59 voters who have voted early. This is an opportunity for anyone who is a registered voter within the county, to cast their vote before election day to be held on Tuesday, May 8th. You do not have to give a reason as to why you are voting early. You only need to provide your voter identifiction card to the absentee voting board members, and you will then vote on the voting machine. It only takes a few minutes of your time and this will prevent longer waiting time at your precinct's polling place on election day. Early voting takes place in the Starke County Clerk's office located on the second floor of the courthouse. For evening voting and Saturday voting, refer to these that were given earlier this month on this page. VOTE EARLY!!!
I was one of the 59 who voted last week. I did not have to show my voter ID card. I did have to show my drivers license.
A new word and how apropos.
Ineptocracy
Could not find this word in Webster's. Googled it and
discovered it is a recently "coined" new word found on a T- shirt on eBay.
Ineptocracy (in-ep-toc'-Ra-cy) - a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves
or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers
the ufo lights, the aliens were looking for intelligent life, couldnt find any and left.
I haven't heard it announced on the radio so figured I would pass along that the Planning Commission has canceled their meeting for tonight. Apparently, they have nothing on the agenda to discuss.
I only found out because I called to ask when the agenda would be posted online. The county site still shows a meeting for tonight, but that is apparently incorrect info.
I just wrote a check for my property taxes and went to mail it...why does it go to 1st Source Bank in South Bend when there is a 1st Source Bank here in Knox? I understand that the taxes can be paid in person at several local banks, but don't understand why when paying by mail it is mailed out of the county.
Interesting that the number of posts is down so much this month. I tried to post earlier to let folks know that the Planning Commission meeting for tonight has been canceled...several hours later and my post still hasn't been allowed through to the blog.
I saw orange lights while driving South on Hwy35 near Toto Rd tonight @ 9p.m.. They looked to be above Hwy 10(approx 5-10,000ft when spotted), & just went straight up, out of sight in less than 20 sec. Didn't look like anything I've ever seen before.
And has anyone ever seen the weather reports be so wrong? We keep hearing rain, then as the rainy days approach, they change it to sun. Even those days they called for rain, we sure didnt get much in Southern Starke Co.
So does anyone have any idea what these lights are? Would like reasonable answers.
i agree with --->

oh did you say lites were orange, ok that makes since now. orange is the lite produced when traveling back in time.
starke people that are working are now making the same money as people did in the 50's so we have been transported back in time and
no one knows it because we are all here,
who to blame? GW hasnt been blamed for time travel yet, so its GW's fault.
The lights are SURVIELENCE DRONES, & they are being used all over the US now. If Obama gets elected, be ready for worse.
Why do we have a Starke County Treasurer if the mailed property taxes are processed in St. Joseph County??? I thought it was one of the jobs of the county treasurer to collect and process the property taxes. I would assume that the 1st Source Bank in South Bend is not providing this service at no cost to the citizens of Starke County.
Very proud to see how hard the Knox High School football team & basketball teams are working for NEXT YEAR. That's dedication & commitment that'll bring success, and yes, we do have the talent in all classes, & am already excited, not only about next season, but the next 4-5 yrs. And I commend the coaching staffs, for they're putting in 100's of hours that aren't in the coaching contract, and showing how much they care about the kids.
But...in Football, I just hope we switch the play calls up in football, as the opposition was reading our signals. And I hope the coaches & kids can get the rest of the talent we have in school to participate, we need depth to reach the pinnacle. Also, diversify the Offense & not rely on 1 or 2 players, & make a ruthless Defense with a ton of blitz packages.
In Basketball it'd be great to mix up the defense instead of man-to-man ALL the time. A little 1-3-1, mixed zone packages, something that'll lead to more fast-break baskets. And also, if a player can slam it, please let'em occassionally, for it really fires up the rest of the team.
In no way am I knockin the coaches, for I'm already admiring their work ethic & attention given to the players, but I think we are darn close to having top notch coaching staffs(as they've learned & grown within the programs), & we have the talent to bring Knox to the next level, & really begin the Powerhouse Tradition.
So keep up the work, bring more on board on the gridiron, & big talent on the hardwood, because the Knox Redskins are going to make ALOTTA noise this year & only get stronger! GO BIG RED!
I am not sure what the lights are either but last night after nightfall my husband and i saw them on 10 mile road. At first we thought maybe they were other fishermen or hunters not sure. They were quiet thought as if they were floating because there was no sound from sticks breaking or leaves. All was fine until the three we saw all decided to join toghether and watch us from the opposite side of the river where we were. All you could see is the light kinda i guess floating and they started darting up and down the side a couple of times. We used the flashlight on them but it made them dart off exteremly fast. we got in the car to see if we could find them again but no luck.
Did anyone else experience anything last night.?
So how did you get the info for that they have sent from Obama so we could be watched?
Have fun playing Russ Radtke and New Prairie this year !
Vote Ron Paul president, where foresight is applicable and no one is pulling the strings
Ya that's it surveillance drones and they are turning on their bright colored lights so you will know they are looking at you. If you don't like Obama those drones will search you out and flash lights at you. Be careful what you say or the drones will flash you.
The Orange lights mean yield or prepare to stop.
What an honor to have Ted Hayes attend the Operation Quiet Comfort event held in Plymouth on Thursday nite. He is, and has been, such an asset to WKVI and the surrounding area. We had a huge crowd and the proceeds of the event and auction with go to Operation Quiet Comfort, an organization of volunteers across America who honor and comfort our U S Armed Forces who are injured while serving in harm's way.
I would feel better if someone were pulling the strings for Ron Paul
What was outcome of lawsuit the sheriff filed against merit board? Hear it went to arbitration but nothin else. Did they mget rid of merit board,or are they still members? Also who paid the $180.00 fee?
I believe things were worked out in the mediation and there was no fee since it was being filed by a county entity. The fee is apparently waived when it is a county entity filing the petition with the court.
merit board story in wkvi news, seach the old news, all is settled.
you silly tax payers, why would you mail your tax payment to treasurers office, when we have PAID a bank in south bend to do open the envelopes. but we will get rid of our elected treasurer for being off 27cents without a chance to even check it herself, she is banned from the office, and her court hearing is after the fall election. (this in no why reflects anything bad on the fine jod her replacement is doing)
Congradulations to New Prairie High School on landing Russ Radtke as your Football Coach.
Sad that Knox High School does not go for a Coach of his caliper.
He was a thorn in our side when he Coached at North Judson, when we had good teams.
He will really pound us now, with out the talent.
Watch what a program this man will build there.
We are going in the wrong direction in all sports.
Wow, Radke to New Prairie...Knox's Conference foe. Get ready for the wishbone. I like our coach at Knox, but wish someone else was running the Offense. Wasn't Steve Bradley having some success with our Offense and training quarterbacks some years back? Good to see local past greats have a passion to contribute to their hometown team, as many of our coaches were past players.
There is no competency test to run for public office. Maybe there should be. But until there is voters and the media need to ask candidates what their qualfications are. Anybody can run and get elected. Later we find out that they cant do the job, but then its too late. When the office requires technical skill and knowledge we need someone to actually find out their qualifications. Would you vote for Chief Maintenance Officer based on his family name? Thats what we have done in the past so lets stop it now.
HOW MANY PEOPLE KNEW THE FORT WAYNE FOOD BANK TRUCK ARRIVED FRIDAY AT A CHURCH IN KNOX? I guess they had a good turn out among those who knew about it! Some overweight people were pushing little elderly ladies out of their way, and while the rules said one box per family, some families got one box per family member. I declined the opportunity as I feel only those in need should get it. It brought out the greed and bad manners in our citizen, but at least one man gave another man with his box a ride home because he was sick and had a long walk ahead. I guess they then can put down how many people was helped as they get more donations. I donated food to the tornado vict. at the Victory Church which was taking people and food to Henrysville to help clean up and feed those who lost everything. There are lots of good people in this county but others make us look bad.
ORANGE LIGHTS! It is an election year and some nice wealthy people of a powerful political party are organizing to regain control of the presidency so they can get even lower tax rates, and they are probably using the profits from the gasoline stocks that everybody needs to operate their cars. It is nice that some can travel around in expensive cars using the profits from millions invested in stocks.
http://www.wkvi.com/schools/28-indiana-schools-receive-excellence-award/
Congrats to Oregon-Davis. One of only 28 schools in the state Excellence in Performance for Teachers!!! So proud of our wonderful teachers!!!
The area schools to get this were OD, Bremen and Fort Wayne.
no awards change the cold hard truth about small schools VOTE NO !!!!!!
I own a house in Hamlet and the Taxes are more their than a 4 unit in Marshall County. That ain't right!! And the house is valued less than the 4 unit. Enough is enough with Taxes!!!!!
Anonymous- if you vote no and they consolidate with an area school, the taxes will be even higher. OD has the lowest tax rate of the area schools.
Whats going on at Bass Lake? All 3 commissioners the highway and 2 DNR officers were out there last night . Is there something going on the rest of the Bass Lake people should know about ?
Ted Hayes where are you when we need you? Report please.
The United States national debt is $15.6 trillion ($15,600,000,000,000), as calculated on April 14,which works out to nearly $50,000 for each of the more than 313,400,000 men, women and children who are citizens of the country.
The big spenders are so out of control these days that they routinely spend 40 percent more than the nation collects in tax revenue. BTW, Obama just appointed a new Atrocities Czar. Is that czar number 35 or 36?
I don’t know about you but I want this insanity to stop and have called and written those who have been elected and are supposed to do my bidding. I am anticipating yet another form letter.
I guess anyone wanting to know what is going on at Bass Lake or in your neighborhood should be attending the county meetings. This was discussed at the commissioner's meeting that they were going to go out to assess which roads have lake access that is county owned property so they know where the fire trucks may need emergency access to water and such.
But the OD teachers always receive that raise, no matter what the School's budget standing. I voted NO to that issue. As stated above enough is enough.

THURSDAY, MAY 3
YOU WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO VOTE ON THE NEXT TWO SATURDAY MORNINGS FROM 8 AM TO 12 NOON. ALL VOTING IS DONE ON THE SECOND FLOOR OF THE COURTHOUSE IN THE CLERK'S OFFICE.
VOTE EARLY AND AVOID PROBLEMS ON ELECTION DAY.
I sure hope that Surveyor Estok is not planning on taking out the rapids at Hwy 35. You can see plainly from the park that the water level upstream the rapid is 2-3 feet higher, & by taking out the rapids, it will drastically drop the water levels upstream. If I were a river property owner, I'd be very concerned about that. I can still see the logic of filling the hole in front of the rapids, but those rocks have become a natural dam, & greatly helps the ecosystem & natural habitat upstream. Is the DNR aware of this idea?
Well I think that if you do the research OD rates is not the lowest and if we are having this vote to raise the levy If it fails wont we have to have another vote to raise it if the neighboring schools have a higher rate looks like a WIN WIN VOTE NO!!!!!!!
My parents taught me to do what is right for my community!
SAVE OD Vote YES May 8th!
Does anyone remember about 40 plus years ago they wanted to consolidate Grovertown and Hamlet schools which became OD? At the time a lot of people were also for sending kids instead to Walkerton and Knox make larger school for the better education.
Was a great idea then and a better idea now, we are always going to be to small of a school to keep up with the larger schools. lets not worry about our jobs we hold at OD and think of the kids and the fact they need a GREAT EDUCATION with more subjects and even maybe a football team. Time to let it go people. It should of been done 40 years ago. Same old people still holding on.
Why is there nothing on Wkvi about John Hampton.
North Judson - San Pierre High School Girls Basketball Coach Retiring??
I agree it never should have gotten to this point even though I went to od my kids and my mom went to hamlet VOTE NO !!!!!!
I am not real thrilled with the tax referendum at OD, I have many issues with the administration and school board. However, looking at the last couple of posts, playing football should not be a reason to close the school. If the referendum does not pass then the school will have to consolidate or if no one agrees to consolidate the state will end up taking OD over, they will not close just go under new management. I am not for the referendum at all and probably won't vote for it, but I am doing it on actual problems with the education at the school not the sports offered.
About the rapids at the park on 35,you are misinformed you need to call Starke County Surveyor Dennis Estok 772-9135 he will be glad to answer all your questions.
My parents went to Oregon School and many parents went to Davis School. Going to OD myself one of the very last classes before the building completion. Remember Pictures used to hang on the school wall. I could find my parents or my own on the wall. Well when they got the new building no one has seen the pictures again. Where are these pictures? Is this the way of the school well poof to OD also.
Vote for ron paul
Perplexing issue..this OD school vote has become. Has it come to their mind as to whether those of us at Knox or John Glenn School want all the extra students? Have you thought about how we'll have to enlarge our schools, & at what cost to us? I think it's a simpler solution to figure out how to save your school, than to open a whole new can of worms, with the consolidation process. And I sure know I wouldn't want my kid riding a bus that distance everyday. Figure it out & Git-r-done!
Speaking of Oregon Davis, what ever happened to all the class pictures that hung in Hamlet and Grovertown High School. Oregon Davis never felt they were good enough for them to hang?
It would be much easier to decide to vote yes or no to the OD issue if the alternative plans were more well known. If the NO vote wins and the students are merged to another school, what will happen to class sizes? If more classrooms and teachers are added what will happen to the schedules for special classes such as music which right now are pretty jammed packed with the number of classroom that exist? What about transportation, special education, lunch service facilities? Are the other existing schools able to SUCCESSFULLY accept students from a consolidation?
If the YES vote goes through what are the plans to continue the great ISTEP and graduation numbers under the new budget? What is the plan to ensure that the school is not in this same position in 2,3,5,10 years?
Too much arguing about the yes or no votes and too little sharing of the plans for after the vote.
Why is it that so many people say they don't want to go to Knox?? I think it may be jealousy!? I graduated from Knox, both of my daughters graduated from Knox, and we are very productive adults. My one daughter is an RN the other a stay at home mom who also works part time. I moved here from Plymouth and you talk about a place I wouldn't want to go or have my children go!!!!!!!
od grad rate, when you use such low numbers, if a senior were to become ill and die, the grad rate would fall by 2%, so in od's case the %'s are very missleading both to the good and bad. the vote wont pass, so prepair for major cuts in staff, buses, trips and sports.
Does anyone know when the town wide yard sale is for Knox? I haven't seen a date yet and it's usually around the middle of May, I think. Thanks!
The town wide yard sale is May 19.
Feel the comments on the joining of the school systems is NOT a good one. Crowding is never a good thing for our students. And as one said about needing to bus the students. We already have a problem with that issue. How or WHY children already have to be picked up over a hour before school is crazy. Some parents have already said how they not only have 1 but 3 bus's go past there home when some of those students live clear across town the other direction. Does that make any sence??
I agree that consolidating schools is not always a good thing. Studies show that schools with fewer students do better due to smaller class sizes. But, sometimes consolidation is inevitable. The day of the small school is about over. The bigger schools will have a larger budget and therefore will get the benefits. Sorry, but that is just the way things are in this day and age.
Let us not use the long bus ride as a excuse for keeping OD. Very few if any would be kept in the bus longer than they are now. More buses would be put on draw a circle people they will be just about the same distance. Good excuse but will not actually cut it.
I think having all the kids bussed here and there is dangerous and unhealthy for them and all of us. Once again lets find more ways to keep gas prices high. Just think of how you would feel driving clear to Gary for activities, and how much more gas that would take for all. I know big school systems sound great but why not just start out your childs education in college if you want them that far from home.
