Does anyone know what to do to get an absentee ballot for someone who is attending college out of state?
HELLOOOO STARKE COUNTY! As Oct swings in, I hope you all had a great summer, enjoying the football, & the beautiful fall season that's upon us. As well also draw near to another very important election, I hope we all spend the time, to get to know & evaluate every candidtae, on ALL levels, & judge which agrees with our own morale compass(granted it's pointed in the right direction). We must not disrespect this right to vote, that's been givin to us through the shedding of our Soldier's blood, and bestowed on us by our Father above. So give your due diligence, for that vote is not just your own, but of the future of our youth. G'day..& blessings to ya'all!
I do not believe there has been an announcement of potential sites for the proposed new jail. There is a site that would be ideal if the county and the city could come to agreement and that is Parkview. The city already owns numerous lots there, it is close to both city and circuit court and close enough to the cell tower that county and city law enforcement radio antennas could be positioned on the 250 foot tower which would save the expense of building a tower exclusively for law enforcement.
I think the new jail should be built where the Moose is presently located, for it'd save huge amounts on fuel, time(communication w/ the court system) & then the Moose build a new, family recreational center where People's Grocery Store used to be. Winamac did it correctly when they built right next to their existing court house. Ask Plymouth how much their fuel costs, & any other negetives, on having their jail so far from their courts & county offices.
ABSENTEE VOTING...Beginning Monday, October 8 and continuing daily during normal courthouse hours (8 AM to noon and 1 PM to 4 PM) absentee voting will be held on the second floor of the courthouse in the Clerk's office. Voter identification is required and you must be registered before October 9th to be eligible to vote.
There will also be two Saturdays, October 27 and November 3 where voting will also be available in the Clerk's office. The hours on these two dates are from 8 to noon and 1 to 4.
There will also be 4 evenings when in office voting will also be held in the Clerk's office. These dates are: Tuesday, October 23 and Tuesday, October 30 and on Thursdy, October 25 and Thursday, November 1 from 5 PM to 7 PM each night.
Vote early and avoid long waiting lines at your precinct on election day. Parking is also a problem on election day at some locations, but if you vote in the courthouse there should be ample on street parking available. Any voter registered in Starke County is able to vote early in the Clerk's office.
Why plan to Meet the Candidates on the same night as the Presidential Debates? It should be rescheduled. Also, we should be able to meet the real candidates and not those representing the candidates.
With reguards to locating property for the new Starke County Jail, please remember that it needs to be relatively close to the courthouse. The reason for this is the additional cost of transporting inmates for hearings, trials, and other legal matters. This cost will include fuel for vehicles, additional insurance needs, and the cost of a new vehicle large enough to transport several inmates as well as officers at a time. Also, it may be necessary to hire additional officers to drive this vehicle and to escort inmates to the courthouse.
You have to have read or heard of the use of kidnapped children in African countries being forced into lives of soldiers, or being killed if they refused. In 2008, the Child Soldiers Protection Act was enacted to provide sanctions to those countries that continue to exploit children as soldiers. AND for the third year in a row, our president, the president of the United States, has waived those sanctions against those countries who continue to kidnap and absorb children into their armies! That is a despicable action that rewards the most despicable of actions with taxpayer funding, and isn't worthy of this nation and especially any president of this nation!!! And yet have you read or heard of this action before??? This president has signed those waivers for the last three years and we have heard not a peep from our congress!! And that is a perfect example of the depths that our congress has sunk! And apparently, nobody cares!!!
When is the meet the candidates night?
Since the county must purchase land the suggestion that Parkview be used as the site of the new jail has merit as there would be residual benefits. As far as transporting inmates to and from court, hearings could be conducted via CCTV thereby eliminating the necessity of transport and the potential for escape.
how can my down town business property be re-accessed higher, did the economy get better and i missed it. tax increase without raising the rate. over 100% tax increase in about 6yrs.
Wow. My house, out in the country, was valued at 13% less by this recent assessment...but I didn't see any tax decrease. And Starke Co. raised it's Income Tax to 1 of the higher in the State, to .0171%. After the new year, you can also expect to see a large increase in Federal Income Taxes...& very soon we will have a Global UN tax. There's also more taxers in the works....that's if Obama wins of course.
Met the Candidate Night is tomorrow at 6:00pm CDT
To get an absentee ballot you must get an application from the courthouse (Clerk's office). Your ballot will then be mailed to you.

Bikes, Not the scooters that are causing everyone so much trouble on the roads it is hard enough to dodge a drunk on a scooter. But little kids and some adults on bikes. SOMEONE needs to make them aware of riding on the side of traffic, someone is going to get killed if it keeps up. Maybe not this year as the season is almost over, but please tell everyone in your family the bike riding rules, and if you know a patrolman for towns or county even a teacher in elementry school could spend some time on this subject mention to them that there is a problem as bikes do not follow the rules anymore. They ride into traffic instead of with it. Even adults seem to not know this. Please I do not want to see anyone hurt because no one tells these kids.
Why are the comments sections closed on the main page so that we can't comment on individual news stories? Also, what's happening with the North Judson town clerk court case - haven't seen anything lately.
You either got to put the jail next to the courthouse or you got to put a new courtroom in the jail. If you don't, the county is going to have to pay for transportation and inconvenience for decades. DOn't let this happen people. Use your heads.
Wow 4 precints voting at the Knox Community Center. Praytell where are all those voters supposed to park????? Voting early sounds like a wonderful idea.
ACTUALLY.....the majority of court hearings are made now THROUGH VIDEO CONFERENCE, & the inmate does not leave the confines of the jail. They're not even walking across the street to the court at this time. But, there are many other issues that would make it wise to keep it close to the court house, but, I also hear that the county see's expansion to the North, on Hwy 35, & the property North of town will start to see more than just the jail being built.
Maybe when the outfit finishes breaking ground for Cisco, they can break ground for the new jail!
Chilli dinner benefit for 5 year old Vance Flagg, battling AML leukemia at Riley children's hospital at the VFW Oct 6th from 5:00-? $8.00 a ticket
For starters, Cisco is a company that provides network services and sells products like routers, bridges, access points around the world.
Sysco is the food distributer that bought land north of Knox and plans to build a distribution facility there some day. They already have 180 locations and 45,000 employees.
My real point is why do people seem to enjoy making jokes about the future Sysco facility in Hamlet? With annual sales of over $39 billion and that many locations, I think we might have to admit they know what they are doing and will build the Hamlet facility when business conditions are right for them to do so. I know I wouldn't invest in a company that didn't adjust their expansion plans accordingly!
More importantly, Starke County residents need to have more pride in their community and not make comments that tear it down.
I want to thank the Chamber for sponsoring the Meet the Candidates Night. It gave us a chance to hear what the various candidates had to say about how they feel they could benefit the voters by serving in the various elected roles of government. I was hoping to hear from certain candidates why they felt they were the best choice. Some did a good job of sharing their views on issues affecting the local area in the five minutes they were allowed. Others really didn't say anything that would sway a voter to gain their support. One candidate shared a quote and though the quote was a good one, that candidate should have done his research. The quote was not something said by Thomas Jefferson as stated, but rather a Gerald Ford quote from 1974.
When someone promises all of these good paying jobs and makes it look like he's done a great job all because he helped bring Sysco to the county people have the right to say what they want. All I read about in the paper is how someone won some award and he is doing such a great job bringing new jobs to Knox. Where are those jobs and who are all these great new businesses?
"but, I also hear that the county see's expansion to the North, on Hwy 35, & the property North of town will start to see more than just the jail being built".
Where did you get this information? Which county officials see more expansion north of town? More than just the jail being built??? Sounds like some decision has already been made by someone or someone spreading rumors.
So what's the big secret?? All I'm saying is that a company that makes an appearance to buy land and build hopes, and then disappears should at least keep the area involved in their plans. This area is hard pressed and a lick and a promise is insufficient information!!
as far as the knox school board race, can anyone tell me who is running against whom and if there is a meeting to hear them.
Knox should UNDOUBTABLY be a 2A school. Some of us were informed that Knox is only a 3A school due to all the special-needs students being bused & taught in Knox, which is fantastic, & we hope that they receive every possible tool to progress their learning. But as to athletics, this should not count against those who participate 7 have to continually go up against larger school systems. Now, with a 41.5 student decrease, I seriously hope the Knox School Board pursues to bring Knox back into the 2A bracket, where they belong.
The idea of expansion North of the Yellow River is only an idea. It's been looked at, just the same as expanding the South side. So, don't get your panties in a bunch over ideas that have gottin no serious thought as of yet. It's amazing how people are quick to criticize issues they know nothing about, yet, have no interest to even go to any meetings to see what's going on. Instead of calling it a blog, maybe it should be called a gossip column.
NO NO NO to new jail!
I always heard class brackets were decided by 10th through 12th grade student enrollment. 2A or 3A dosen't matter they lose to 1A teams so who cares.
I read the article that Pulaski is shocked there is a rise in heroin use. I'm not. People are prescribed scheduled narcotics when they don't really need them. And now, there is a big crackdown on prescription narcotics without any rehabilitation to get these people over their addiction, so they go to the next best thing on the streets, heroin. You can't just cut someone off cold turkey and not expect some kind of problem. Emergency rooms are overflowing with patients needing their "fix" and rehab and psych units telling er staff to discharge and scheduling these people 2-3 weeks later for intake and outpatient therapy. So they resort to the street substituting one addiction for another. It is sad but we are going to see numerous deaths and near deaths to these substitutions. People losing jobs, homes, families to this silent epidemic that is going on right in our back yards. There is no easy answer to this problem, but for anyone to be shocked over this is wearing blinders.
If the county can come up with the money to build a new jail, it seems foolish not to come up with an equal amount of money to prevent people needing to be incarcerated in the first place.
Some will say nothing can be done about these people. Well I don't believe some people are just plain bad and will do bad things. Most of their bad behavior can be attributed to their home environment when they were children. Wouldn't it be better to spend our hard earned tax dollars on prevention, not more band aids? It reminds me of applying more tourniquets to stop the bleeding instead of fixing the wound.
If we can't afford both a jail and effective prevention programs, we shouldn't do either!
Ok, I agree most people are not just bad and do bad things. Yes, some can be attributed to home environment when they were children, but lots of them had ideal home lives, and just decided to do as they please. Prevention doesn't work with these people. And rehab programs don't seem to work either. There are just going to always be people who want to do evil and therefore we will need more room in our jail.
Sorry, I do not agree. If you watch the kids entering & leaving elementary and middle school, it is easy to see the ones that are going to be problem adults. It is just as easy to see the ones that are going to be responsible law abiding adults. Yes, there will always be a few exceptions, but it makes more sense to me to concentrate on the larger segments.
On the cost of the jail, who said it will be paid for thru your taxes. I have heard not everyone will pay for this. I for one would like some clarification. Will this be included in the county taxes or not? If a select few (working people only) are paying for it, that means only about 9,000 out of 23,000 will be payint for the new jail. Please someone clear this up and answer the question. I was one of the people that could not attend the meetings that were held.
I've encountered many families that are choosing to home school their kids. Some have choosen this route because they had issues with getting their child to school on time, or not at all. Others that I'm familiar with have numerous kids at home, schooling all of different ages, by 1 parent. Now I AM NOT degrading parents who work hard at educating their children on their own, as there are issues I have with public schools as well, but it SHOULD BE A LAW THAT ALL KIDS IN THE STATE OF INDIANA, WHETHER PUBLIC, PRIVATE, OR HOME SCHOOLED, BE MANDATED TO TAKE THE ISTEP TESTS TO SEE WHO IS ACTUALLY GETTING AN EDUCATION. I know for a fact there's families that aren't educating their kids very well, or at all. And when these kids become adults, it will be the responsibility of the taxpayer to fund these uneducated people. And, we'd like to see, for the successful homeschooling households, how it's actually better, & possibly learn from their strategies. But ISTEP should be mandatory for ALL.
So when you watch kids walk in and out of school what traits do you look for that tells you they will be problem adults?
Do you judge people at the grocery store, or gas station or elsewhere the same? I try not to judge ANYBODY, for life is hard for all. If I do indeed somebody who needs it, I pray for them, as we ALL need it, but I myself, have alotta faith in these kids coming out of high school, as I know they're not near as wild & crazy as we were back in the 80's. Have faith in them, build them up. See the positives....in everybody.
paying for jail...
the county doubled the edit tax which comes out of you pay check only. i dont know when it starts.
ISTEP tests for all students, public, private and homeschooled. I agree 100%. I also know kids who the parents claim to be home schooling, but I question how much can the child learn, when I know the parent is not capable of being a teacher.
I could not disagree any more. The last thing any student needs is a federal government mandated ISTEP test. How horrid would it be to have no parental choice .
There are ten planks to the communist manifesto. The ninth is government control of schools. Wanting all children to take ISTEP or whatever standerized test is PURE COMMUNISM !
I wrote to my rep. A long time ago warning him of what you are purposing. I knew what the voucher program I.e. "parents choice" facade was all about, raming all our children under government control.
Seems the taxpayer is on the hook for many "educated" people I.e. cops, teachers, union workers...etc....
Hey, get with the American philosophy of freedom and steer clear of Communism.
Get it fixed
Our teachers waste our childrens time teaching to the test. This is an inferior form of schooling. We should eliminate all istep and title 1 from all of our schools.
Go look up the data, the children are no smarter since 1971, but the money spent and testing has increased by an astonishing amount. Money and testing does not equate to a more educated student.
End the deptartment of ed. That was started under the Carter admin. In 1979. You mean to tell me everyone who graduated prior to did not receive a quality education ? No child left behind that was the cornerstone of the Bush admin. Would be thankfully obslete if the dept. Of ed. Was brought to an end, also.
Istep testing is a cancer.
Yes, the Dept.of Educ. is another bureaucratic piece of crap to the system, & needs absolved, BUT....there has to be a way to make sure school are meeting standards, as well as parents who homeschool. We don't need Dept.of Ed to find this out, but there does need to be some type of standard testing to make certain kids are learning what they should at each level, and those who stay at home to learn. We do need a Pres. that will trim the fat, & disband any offices that aren't necessary, & Dept.of Ed is 1 of them. But way too many home schooled students not even close to knowing what public school kids the same age know, & the taxpayers will suffer for it. How can a parent say, "I'm going to homeschool", when they couldn't even get their kid to school regularly? Who's there to protect & help this child, before it's too late? A standard test will at least show which parents are neglecting their child with their choice of taking on the responsibility of homeschooling, for I personally know of 3 households that I feel sorry for the kids, for they won't have a chance when they hit the real world.
EARLY VOTING IN STARKE COUNTY BEGAN THIS MORNING. VOTING EARLY ENABLES THE VOTER TO VOTE WHEN IT IS CONVENIENT FOR THEM. THERE IS NO PARKING PROBLEM TO GET TO THE STARKE COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICE WHERE THE VOTING OCCURS. HANDICAPPED PARKING IS AVAILABLE ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE COURTHOUSE AND ONCE INSIDE THE BUILDING THERE IS AN ELEVATOR THAT WILL TAKE YOU TO THE SECOND FLOOR WHERE THE CLERK'S OFFICE IS LOCATED. FOR THE TIMES AND DATES WHEN EARLY VOTING OCCURS REFER TO THIS THAT WAS POSTED EARLIER THIS MONTH IN THIS COLUMN. VOTE EARLY!!!!
Paying for jail......if it's thru the edit tsx, that does mean only the people working here in Starke Cty are paying for the jail. So if you're retired, umemployed or just not working you don't pay. This means I will be paying and most of my neighbors will not, that just doesn't seem fair now does it. I would think putting into the tax base would pay for the jail a lot faster because everyone would be paying for it not just a select few.
If you put it on property tax then only the people who own property will pay . Renters will not unless the property owner increases their rent payment Either way you cut some will not pay . Anyone working in Starke Co will pay not just the citizens of Starke Co.
Is anyone working on the Grovertown Truckstop accident situation? How many people have to die in accidents in that area before things get changed?
Retired persons who receive a pension pay county tax when they file their tax return each year so the retired people will pay for the jail as well. If this is wrong, someone please tell my accountant that I no longer need to pay this!!
JAIL - Just wait until we have to pay the additional YEARLY operating costs for the bigger jail - more people, more meals, more equipment to maintain, more jailers, etc. Could be hundreds of thousands of dollars more every year. Our jail costs us more than $500,000 every year now. Could be nearly a million a year. Who is going to pay all that??
Homeschooled children on the average are better educated than public or private schooled children.
Are you to decide what my child is to know by a certain age level ? Even worse, is the government to decide over me, the Parent, what is best. Heck no.
Keep control of students local; between the parent, teacher and school board. I trust the teacher who has been with the student 180 days, testing, quizing and working with that student, over a test, to determine what said student knows. Trust of parent over government is an absolute.
I often wonder the same, "Who are there to help our children before it's too late"......I.e. when are we going to eliminate the tests from schools. The tests are simply there to string up the dollars allotted to the school and control. Hilter loved the idea of a standerized colony of cattle that all thought the same
There was a time when home schooling was permitted for religious reasons only, and there was a good reason for it too! I worked with child protective services in another state and found home schooling to be a scam used by a certain few only for the reason of lazyness. This has changed, admittedly, over the years, but there still seems to be few controls. Perhaps a article about "home schooling" in a local publication could do alot to allay questions, perhaps a chance to publicize both sides of the issue!
I've seen many cases where the home schooled student FAR exceeded what would've been accomplished in public school. But I am also seeing many nowadays that defer to homeschooling because of "laziness". Sad thing, these were great students, & great athletes, & I just hope they receive the preparation to lead a successful life. How dooes a society know, without having a test, or even checking in? In no way would anyone want your "Hitler" idea, but there's got to be a way to at least make certain these kids are learning "the minimum".
Lets make this easy . First the teachers have to teach . Students must learn . If students don't pass final test they stay in the same grade and do it again. They can't spell or do simple math yet the are passed . It worked 40 years ago and it will work today except the teachers and everyone who is to be teaching our students will look bad . We are in an all fired hurry to get the kids out of school we have forgotten to teach them .
We have a great way to make sure children are learing...........been in place since the start of education, it is called the Teacher.
Yes we should not tear down the fact that Sysco may still be coming to our area. But Sysco knows we are desperately waiting and you would think they would give us a official update once in awhile. I at this time have more hope that the Professor and Dorothy will land on the property.
Teachers can only teach students that are willing to learn and it has been that way forever. The blame cannot be laid all on the teacher because the parents need to oversee their children to make sure they are progressing. Also as stated below there are cases where they push children through and it is a major injustice to the children that it happens to. As far as this istep testing goes, it is a total joke. They started it when I was in high school but yet I seem to make the grade just fine before it was implemented.
Why is it that so many people leave comments, but choose to remain anonymous. The problem in this county is that people are afraid to stand up for what they believe. If I have something to say I have the guts to sign my name. Jeff Singleton Sr.
If you want to know the truth about kids being passed to the next grade even though they have low grade averages or are simply passed along.... Take a look at the books. Not the books students use for classes. I am talking about the financial books. Schools recieve funds for the percentages. How many pass, fail, attend, drop out, ect ect. If they faila student it is a reflection on the school and the funds they recieve are lower. This type of an educational system is a large reason the home schooling has become so popular.
Also, people have been blaming poor grades and behavior by kids on the parents. However, when the parents take measures to see to the higher educational standards for their kids and taking responsability for their kids in ways such as home schooling, now you all want to throw them under the bus for it. If you research the whole home schooling issue, you may be suprised on the requirements for a "diploma". I agree with home schooling for a variety of reasons including poor educational system, lack of protection/security, high level of drug abuse in schools, and many other reasons.
It would appear that the Fed Govt, thru the Dept of Education, manages the system by looking at the processes of the more successful schools. Much like some teachers that teach to the brightest students only. These results than being used as a guide in the managing of all schools. It would make more sense for each state to manage their own education system, academically as well as financially. I don't believe that the Fed can reasonably compare a Starke County School System with a southern California school system! For no other reason, at least the state system may have the opportunity to bypass politicians running the program, and put it in the hands of educators!
I like the idea of putting a courtroom in a new jail. It would save time and money. Besides the courts are over booked as it is. Try going to in for something. Usually it's scheduled at a certain time but you might get in a hour later. Having a courtroom in the jail would allow other courtrooms in the courthouse to be used for other cases, such as child support.
Would that mean we have to hire another judge, clerk, secretary, court reporter, etc.? I'm not sure that is going to save any money to have to hire a whole second staff and maintain TWO courtrooms. I think the inconvenience of a late hearing is worth the savings in $$$$.
My WHOLE POINT about the Home Schooling was NEVER intended to disrespect it's ability & positives, but only to point out that some parents are using it to totally disregard the education of their child. I'd just like to see something instilled to make certain that these, "possibly neglected children" students are indeed being taught.
So a woman visiting the Starke Co. jail, sits in the lobby and a piece of the ceiling approximately 24x24 falls and hits her in the head. For those of you arguing that we don't need a new jail, wouldn't it be cheaper to pay for a new county jail to be built then to pay this woman damages from a lawsuit?
I guess the need for a new jail in Starke County is apparent, we just need to get past the reluctance to spend the money. We could swallow the cost alot better if the architects will limit the design to functionality and forego the need to present a facade of looks. It's a jail, hard to flower that up, and why would you want to. It isn't a 5 star resort, it is for incarceration and incareration isn't meant to be fun and exciting! Cold and drab looking is the physcological look we want, someplace you don't want to spend your vacation! And certainly not where we want to spend our money!
That is a great idea for the jail. It does not have to be a outstanding piece of art. As you said it is a jail. Make it easy to clean, big enough to get around in, and safe for all. As far as the architects let them know we want a stucture that will be cheapest to heat, easy to keep up and a place you do not like well enough to stay.
If you have any idea about the jail building, you would know it also houses the sheriff dept, 911 operators, detectives and inmates. So sure, fuctional and decent to look at.
EARLY VOTING
At the end of the first week of early voting there have been 198 votes completed. Anyone who is a registered voter in Starke County can vote early in the Clerk's Office located on the 2nd floor of the court house. Vote early to avoid parking problems, long lines of voters on election day and vote at your convience when the court house is open from Monday thru Friday. Tuesday, night of next week, October 23rd, there will be night time voting in the Clerk's Office from 5 to 7 PM.
I bet you anything that all the experts on this blog giving their opinion of what a new jail should look like, inside and out, have never spent one day in any jail in their life. If we find the absolute nicest jail in this state I doubt any of you would volunteer to spend 24 hours locked up in a cell. Jail aint nice. Period. Not only is it not a 5 star resort, it's worse than the worse Motel 6. But it should be functional, safe, and it shouldn't cost much to make it aesthetically pleasing as well. So how long we going to wait on this project? Until the whole roof caves in?
Party politics aside, have you ever asked yourself why so many millions are being spent on political advertising? What do these pacs, organizations and corporations expect in return for the millions they donate to the leaders WE elect? Talk about waste, can you imagine the good that could be done with the 3 billion estimated to being wasted on TV ads alone? Does anyone think this 3 billion was contributed out of the goodness of their corporate hearts without any expectation of getting that 3 billion back in the form of favors and special deals from the leaders WE elect?
I still think aesthetically pleasing is the wrong direction for a new jail. That's where you get into trouble with the cost, with the use of fancy building materials, copper facades, etc. We're talking a jail here, it should be dark and foreboding. You can still make the interior used by the jail/sheriff's staff pleasing without cost overruns. But the exterior should be a monument to ugly, something people will travel from all over the state to view with disgust. So ugly that even the most descerning criminal would not want to be incarcerated there! And it can be done without having to send elected officials on trips around the country viewing examples of modern pleasing designs. In other words, as cheaply and effectively as possible!
Someday, and a grand day it would be, I would like to meet Mr. "Anonymous", who writes to this discussion board. I am betting that he is intellectually superior, surely a patriot, a gifted orator, with uncanny sightfulness, certainly good looking and a marvelous dancer! Wait...........anonymous?............that's me.......never mind!
Can the old jail be repaired, & possibly made into a Juvenile Center? Not to say that making a profit is good, but IF we can put it to good use, serve a good purpose in getting juveniles back on the right path, provide some jobs, & just not bulldoze it. Not sure where we send all our troubled youth, but if it could fill the need for Starke & neighboring Counties, it could still have a positive use. Just an idea.
It's high time our prisoners had a decent place to stay, something they can be proud of. It's no wonder their friends and family complain about when they come to visit. Look, the world has failed these people, made them drop out of school, caused them not to be able to read and write, caused them to resort to drugs and forced them to steal to just get along.
They are not looking for luxurious lake front accommodations, hmm... They are just asking for the basic needs they are entitled to like everyone else. You know, things like HBO and Showtime, not just basic cable, pizza delivery, WiFi, flannel pajamas and warm fuzzy house slippers. No need for a high end leather recliner, just something simple with a built-in cooler and cup holders.
And how about kitchen privileges, well equipped with necessities like funnels, measuring cups, foil, coffee filters, tubing, a pressure cooker would be great. The more experienced cooks could even offer classes for the others.
Isn't it time we made up for all the wrongs these people have had to endure?
The last post wanting all the lauxries for prison inmates, The heck with them, they got themselves into this situation. Maybe they had a rough life, but it takes courage and smarts to do better than the life you had before, Stand up and admit to yours faults and clean up your life, don't forget it's the taxpayers money you are living on in jail.
I am hoping that the post about the luxuries was sarcasm because I don't have half of the things they listed and I am not a criminal. Cable TV is not needed. Get an antenna and let them watch the same handful of channels that many of us get in our homes. What is Wifi? We don't have that either. Do they all have a personal computer or laptop too?
As far as home school kids and drop outs if they made it you could not recieve food stamps or welfare with out a diploma i bet they would get one. Take a step back and look at the familys on welfare 99% of them were raised on welfare and that is all they know, when they get old enough they will be on it. If dad is on disablilty all his kids will be to
Watch the gas prices go down, until after November 5th. You sheeple and your short term memory.
Large Orange Balloons decoratied with the slogan WKVI Morning Man sponsered by the advertisers attached to a light weight lawn chair also donated with a person strapped in it and the straps also donated by a sponser with the person given a GPS, a credit card, high protein bars and released when the winds are blowing at least 20 miles per northeast from the lawn of WKVI to the great Pumpkin drop area. What a great contest for guessing just when and where the flying chair lands safely. And for safety sake, make sure the brave chair pilot has a GPS, a credit card, protein bars, and water as he broadcasts and streams live to the world below. He would have a following of local media near and far, set a new rcord, and maybe even get interviewed by Letterman esp. if he fails to land and travels over Indiana into Ohio. Think how proud of him his coworkers and listeners would be. Just a thought on a damp morning........free idea.
So the bid for brickwork on the courthouse in Pulaski county was awarded partly because the bidder came and looked at the work to be done - even though his bid was over twice as much as the lowest bid. Were all the bidders invited to come and see the worksite? I was under the impression that anytime a public entity was awarding bids they were to be received in sealed envelopes and opened at public meetings of said boards. Why then are the commissioners considering receiving bids in that manner in the future? The whole thing seems a big strange.
Bravo to the Oregon School for having two teachers so innovative and to Dr. Disney for encouraging their endeavors! I'm sure that grant money will be used wisely to benefit not only the students but the community and future of Starke County as well.
I know this is a community blog, so maybe someone can help us. We recently moved into Starke County. We're looking for a good Christian Church that doesn't teach Calvanism. Can anybody help us? Thanks
I think you'll find the local United Methodist churches do not consider themselves Calvinists.
One of the great things about religion is there are so many different denominations; a person can always find one that believes a certain way. I wonder what day of the week God created all these different denominations?
We Sheeple like low gas prices. Whats your problem?
TO post October 17, 2012 7:54 PM....
99%, seriously ?!?!? Where did you get your information?? I think you slightly streatched the facts to try to make a point. In fact, if you talk to MOST children that have a parent on disability for one reason or anathor, you will find that most those children will say they WANT to work and have a dream job in mind. Even those that are pre-teen age have a vision of their life in a few years. The fact that you make the obserd statement that only one oout of ten kids will ammount to functioning working adults is laughable. By your estimates, almost all adults would now be on some type of disability. TRUE, there should be stricter regulations and qualifications required to obtain state or fed. assistance. However, making completely false statements only makes it harder to achieve this goal.
To: October 18, 2012 6:56 PM (or anyone else) I would like to invite you to Church of the Heartland on State Road 10, one mile west of US 35 (the door in front). Service starts at 11 am Central time.
They will go down until after Nov. 6th. That's the problem. Then they'll shoot back up. It doesn't really matter who you vote for. Big Oil owns all.
To the anonymous poster from October 18th asking about local churches...we invite you to stop in at the Knox United Methodist Church! Corner of W John St and S Shield St, just south of downtown. 9:15am on Sunday morning! Friendly, inviting, and we have cookies! :)
So, counter-punch big oil. By a newer, more fuel-efficient vehicle. Don't run to Plymouth on a whim just to go buy one thing at Walmart...plan those trips out so you turn what would be 3 or 4 trips into 1. Use less gas. Demand goes down, they need to lower the price because their supply is up.
Big oil has contributed over 240 million to the last 4 presidential elections, 75% to Republicans. 25% to the Democrats. I bet they don't expect anything in return, yeah right.
Ok counter punch big oil "buy a newer more fuel efficient vehicle.Yeah I'll shell out all that money for a hybrid. Also oil doesn't have to follow the rules of supply and demand. They charge what they want when they want.
Why would any oil company donate money to a party that cuts their permits, sics the EPA on them to shut them down, refuses permits to build pipe lines, allows China to drill off our shores but not us, gives billions to S.American govts to develope their oil industry while shutting down ours. Think about it next time you're filling up your tank!
Well thanks for judging, but I only go to Plymouth maybe 2 times a month. Thanks for the economics lesson. But what if demand goes down and supply goes down or what if demand goes up and supply goes up or how about this demand goes up and supply goes down. Will no one tell me????????
I am VERY proud of this years Knox football team. So many close games, just a real pleasure to watch. & TO THE SCHOOL BOARD...we KNOW the student count should put Knox at 2A, yet NOTHING is being done. Not making any excuses, but sick-n-tired of these young men working THEIR TAILS OFF, to only get matched up against power houses like St.Joe & Andrean in 1st round, THESE KIDS DESERVE BETTER. These boys will continue to work EVEN HARDER, but it's YOUR JOB to get them in the class they rightfully belong. Very proud of these Seniors...but f.y.i....don't sleep on Knox football...WE'RE COMIN!
You have TWO great teachers in the OD systems and congratulations for the wonderful grant THEY wrote.
It all about the ability they have to think of kids first and they do
For all those anonymous people thinking those in the Starke County Jail deserve the worse, I got news for you. The vast majority of them are on remand waiting for their trial. That means they are innocent.
The inhabitants of the jail are not "innocent", but suspected of criminal offenses and awaiting trial!
Schools are locked in to classes for a period of two years. The most recent cycle was school years 2011-12 and 2012-13. The administration or school board can do nothing about that. It appears that Knox will be either a large 2A or small 3A the next time realignment takes place.

se where the ramp is located and then use the elevator to go from the first floor to the second floor where the voting is done. Vote early and avoid problems on election day that may arise. All voters must show a valid voter ID card to be eligible to vote. This early voting is for all voters in Starke County.
Per the link provided
http://www.ihsaa.org/Portals/0/ihsaa/documents/News%20Media/2010-11/Reclassification%20-%20Five%20Classes%202011-12%20&%202012-13.pdf
Knox will not experience a change is class. The legend provided on the document states that school notes in BOLD are moving to a higher class, and those in italics and highlighted are moving to a lower class. By inductive reasoning, those in regular type remain the same.
SATURDAY VOTING WILL BEGIN THIS COMING SATURDAY IN THE STARKE COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICE FROM 8 TO 12 NOON AND FROM 1 TO 4 PM. ANY STARKE COUNTY REGISTERED VOTER MAY VOTE WITH PROPER VOTER ID BY GOING TO THE CLERK'S OFFICE ON THE 2ND FLOOR OF THE COURTHOUSE. VOTE EARLY AND AVOID ELECTION DAY PROBLEMS OF PARKING AND LONG LINES.
If you look at the IHSAA page, you will see that there are so many new charter schools in 1A, Knox will probably never be a 2A school. The classes are divided equally, and with so many "new" schools popping up, smaller schools will be pushed up.
TO: JIM HENRIOTT,
Where can the voter find a copy of the ballot so that we know who all is running before we go vote?
Some of us would like to do some research on the candidates.
Will it published somewhere?
Please let us know.
Thank you
Enrollment numbers are based on the enrollment of the school and determined by the IHSAA. There is nothing the board or admin can do to change that (unless you decide to play in a bigger class).
This is the 2nd time I have seen this brought up and not sure why some think we are in the wrong class. We report attendance numbers to the DOE, the IHSAA gets them and determines classes. I guess we could lie about student enrollment, would that make you feel better--of course we would lose some state funding, with the smaller enrollment.
I had heard Knox enrollemnt was down, & is on the borderline of being 2A again, but talk/rumors holds no weight over fact. We had also heard that because Knox takes all the special needs students, that this also counts against the enrollment numbers, thus putting Knox in 3A class. 100% for all getting best possible education, but should only those eligible to play sports be counted for class placement?
Has anybody noticed that today the gas stations on Road 30 are now advertising gas at $3.399 and less, so good is happening before the election, so vote.
Seriously? "Sorry children with special needs. We can't allow you to enroll because in order for our school to finally win any kind of athletic title, we must cut numbers and get to a smaller class." Read, reread, reread AGAIN, and then hit "Publish Your Comment."
If you got down to 1A would it really matter? I know high school sports are important and all. There are some good teams in 1a Knox would have trouble with.
That's rather naive to think politicians could drive the price of gas up or down to affect an election. We should be so lucky they have that much control over anything.
If politicians could change the price of gas, it would be the Republicans driving the price up right now. Most big oil campaign donations go to the Republicans.
By the way, just how would they drive the price of gas down? That information would be very valuable.
Strange for a supposedly Christian nation to have all this fascination with Halloween. More and more is spent every year on such things as decapitated heads with blood running out eye sockets, people hanging by the neck with multiple knife wounds, but why go on? You know what I'm talking about.
Most will say it's all in good fun? for our kids. Somehow I don't think these innocent little 4-6 year olds came up with this bizarre stuff on their own. What is wrong with us? Why do we encourage such imaginary thinking?
I just love Knox, I love Knox sports, the people, the community & am plain tired of Knox being the doormat & treated like so. I want so much for these kids, that work harder than you'll believe, to accomplish something they'll be proud of the rest of their lives. I dream of football, wrestling, basketball, ANY SPORT(girls or boys), to get a sign placed on each side of town saying STATE CHAMP! I'm also 1 that feels we need a Community Rec.Center. But point is, we don't get near the participation as any other 3A schools, & being we're on the cusp of 2A/3A(by only a handful of students either way), feel we should be 2A. But, as Mr.Huizinga points out, does 3A pay more $$$? Sports & activities play a huge role in kids lives, develops work ethic, goal setting, striving to succeed, teamwork, strong relationships/friendships that endure a lifetime, & of course, they have to pass all their classes. And then take into account many of these kids work part-time, have chores/studies at home, I'm very proud of our student athletes. & it's the best years of their lives before they're thrown into the realm of reality. So support the athletics, for these kids work hard to make their community proud.
Why should Halloween be any different than Santa Claus and the good old Easter Bunny? Did you see some study that showed a correlation between hanging gruesome dummies in one's front yard with carrying out Satanic murders later in life?
Maybe the Feds should jump in and ban all make believe bloody video games and violent movies too. I'm just saying.
You may pick up a copy of the ballot for the November 6th election at the Starke County Clerk's office located on the 2nd floor of the courthouse. The ballots have also been posted on the county's web site at: www.co.starke.in.us
The local newspapers have also been given copies of the ballots and when space is available in their paper they will run the ballots.
There is more than 1 ballot used in this election. Some precinct have school board elections and others do not. Some of the precincts have been assigned to different State Representative and State Senator districts. The town of North Judson has a referendum about whether to increase the size of their town board. Therefore you will have to request a copy of the ballot that will be used in your precinct.
Stop crying, you're in 3A because you belong in 3A, how hard is that to understand. You don't even know what you are talking about. Knox has no chance of dropping to 2A. Just man-up or give up.
How can you people have such strong convictions about these topics but then not identify yourselves? Thats pretty sad and I'm afraid that I can't take any of you seriously.
Isn't it funny when people post on here about how others don't identify themselves on their posts. Then all they really have to say is looky at me I put my name down.So what. What's so impressive about that?
Thanks Mr. HENRIOTT for posting the information,
Politicians Don't control gas prices. However they get paid to look the other way by the people who do.
Andrean is 2a school.
Sounds like you have a concern, as most of us do, for the unfair advantage of playing private schools.
Knox will never win the conference .... New Prairie
Half of knoxs schedule is already 1A
Wouldn't it be nice to see Tom parachute down to the Big Pumpkin Drop using a orange parachute? Fearless Felix was on TV, and he said he was never in danger!
Now is the time to nominate a Starke County Business for Business of the Year. Form and details can be found at the Chamber's website: www.starkecountychamber.com

Shame on Rochester for not playing the national anthem at the game Friday night. Are we getting away from playing that?? I sure hope not. Rochester owes an apology to the fans from both towns. Are we not to honor our country anymore. Are we losing sight of what is great and what is wrong. Not playing the song was wrong. I'm praying for them.
I think Starke Co. should move trick-or-treat to Friday!
