So while trick or treating we notice porch lights on,ring the doorbell or knock and no answer. A couple people even just decided to turn off the light instead of answering the door. Its always been if the light is on they are waiting for trick or treaters right? Its kind of ridiculous how rude some people are getting. One house had a light on so while ringing the doorbell this dashound comes from behind the house and starts nipping at my daughters ankle. Seriously people.
5 more days until gas goes up. Fill up your gas cans and 55 gallon drums.
I would like to say Congratulations and Good Luck to the North Judson-San Pierre Bluejays Jr. Pee Wee Pop Warner football team!!! They are playing in the championship game this Sat. November 3rd at Merriville High School against Boone Grove. Good Job boys at being one of two teams left in your division. It has been a great year and you are all a GREAT group of kids!! I can't wait to see what you guys will do in High School!!!!
What ever happend to freedom of speach freedom is not free just a trick played on the gen pop we are the most controlled nation on this earth but we are the few the proud and we try to project our views on the rest of the world and we seeing how well that works so when it time to vote ... vote for change vote where it will make big change
Vote like the survival of our nation depends upon it. Because it does.
Want to avoid the long lines waiting to vote next Tuesday, go to the courthouse, use the elevator and go to the second floor and vote. You will save time and then you can complain, thousands of people throughout the world wish they could freely vote, and even more have died to make it possible. Nothing is more important to Americans than to exercise their right to vote. I am glad I voted today, so Tuesday I am free to do something else.
November has arrived and the most of the leaves have dropped to the earth, the earth sleeps again. We are blessed here in Indiana, and we need to pray for those without a home on the East Coast. There may come a day when tradegy does not pass us by, but comes and stays to break hearts and spirits.
Anita and Lenny were a nice morning voices, and he even told how to make a easy chicken pot pie.
Maybe Lenny ought consider taking the morning show ever now and then.
This is the most important election, not only in my lifetime(40+ yrs), but for the future of our country. There are many NEW laws & changes that are just waiting for a person hopeful of re-election to enact, & if these dominoes are put in motion, there'll be NO GOING BACK. I pray people see through the lies. And f.y.i.....the UN is waiting at the doorsteps. I'm disgusted that early voters in many swing states are finding that they vote for 1 person, only to press the red-confirm button & see that they "somehow" voted for the other guy. DOUBLE CHECK YOUR ELECTION BALLOTS & MAKE SURE WHOM YOU VOTED FOR IS THE 1 WHO SHOWS UP ON YOUR CONFIRMATION. We should also get a paper printout, just like a gas station receipt, showing our election choices, for our own security in knowing our vote is correct. Be aware, alot've deception going on this election.
Why do those politicians promoting less big government think it's just fine to tell us what God thinks and force their personal beliefs on us by the laws they want to enact or repeal? Do they have special conversations with God? Did God choose them to be his emmissaries? What is happening to the separation of church and state our nation's founders fought to establish?
Everyone believes in freedom of religion, as long as it is their religion. That's not a government thing. It's just a basic concept built into every religion. We have to rely on government to make sure no religion is forced on everyone. In that regard, we should not vote for anyone who talks about their religious beliefs as if it was part of their political views. That is dangerous territory my friends. In the same regard, religious leaders should not talk politics from the pulpit. That is just as dangerous.
Loved Lenny in the morning. Variety is the spice of life. Put some spice in our lives KVI.
To the 40+ person. Just how many elections have you voted in in you 40+ years . How do you know the the person who voted early really didn't vote for whom they thought they voted for . Are you the one who has the ability to change their vote as you seem to know who they voted for .
The system used today in Indiana and other States is almost infauallable. I say almost . Nothing is perfect. Think of it this way if you push the R key on your computor can someone else make the D appear. I don't think so.
Showing ID to vote is pure communism.
Indiana voting sucks.
Like the time, get it fixed
If you want to vote for someone who is on our side (good), just push one button....vote. that's right vote for no one. That is the best way to voice displeasure. Of course I am smart enough to see both parties are one and the same
Wow, 6:12 am trusts the voting machine. Shame on you
Voting machines do not vote, people do who push the buttons. And with all of the literature out about each person running for an office and the advertisements--bad and good. People have no excuse not to know who is running for an office, and if the person you voted for gets it good or if they fail to deliver what you believe they promised, you can vote them out the next time. Nobody stands with a gun watching you vote, but the more negative ads really do more damage because if you play it enough on the television or radio, some people will believe it. Why not spend the millions not on advertisements but to help those in need from the eastern storm. They have the money to blast each other while telling us how bad the economy is. Just ask somebody who just lost the home to the storm how bad life is right now, but many others will come to their aid.
They have much more to worry about than where they will vote when they entire home has been destroyed and yet ugly Americans will use the situation to scam others. The next bad weather event could destroy our homes, and we will want help then.
Yes, we had our porch light on for the time suggested . But where are the brains of the parents who would
let there children go trick or treating in this kind of weather. Go to CVS and buy them after Halloween goodies. I know it is fun to dress up but parent control.HAHAHAHAHAH
IN OFFICE EARLY VOTING IS GOING TO END AT NOON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5TH. THERE WILL BE IN OFFICE VOTING TOMORROW FROM 8 TO 12 AND FROM 1 TO 4 ON THE 2ND FLOOR OF THE COURT HOUSE. ANY STARKE COUNTY REGISTERED VOTER MAY VOTE EARLY ON THE VOTING MACHINES.
In actuality, when you looked at the results of the actual tests, the elementary school started with a B and the middle school started with a D. Because the state added a category of growth, which is pretty confusing to a lot of people
It's not that confusing. It's a measure of relative progress. I'm not sure that I would even admit to losing a full point in this area.
Regardless of how you try to spin the results, the middle school received a 0.50 on a 4-point scale.
zero-point-five
Both parties are one in the same controlled by big companys and coprate intrests what about the third largest party?????
mass media controls the masses see it and you belive its that easy people argue pionts they have no clue about silly people
that's right. The last two posts, actually.
Just realize you are free and do not fall into peoples games. Wars, 911, global warming, drug wars, bank bailouts, etc.....its all phony disinformation we are fed and huge profit margins for the spider who plays the fool to lure the flies.
Trust the good lord, fear nothing and stay free
I agree both major parties are controlled by big money interests. They are not at all concerned about our personal interests. For me it is a matter of which party is worse than the other. One party has the backing of extreme right wing "Christians" who talk like they have a direct line to God. They want to speak for God, control your religious beliefs and eliminate separation of church and state. They have made it easy for me to know which lever to pull.
Yesterday I took part in the great gasoline rush, people were pulling in the wrong way and cutting in front of others lined up properly to fill their gas tanks. I had gone to find cheaper medicine and was pleasantly surprised to be able to purchase a $30 gas card, it actually filled my car with the gas telling for $3.109, I am on a fixed income but I have had it never do that for a long time. It was a pleasant surprise at the Wal-Mart in Plymouth, and I watched the poor people out east without the power to even buy gas at any price.
What a great day for me, but a sad time for millions of our fellow Americans with dark cold homes if they even at a home left to heat.
On the internet it said that there were 177,000.00 jobs out there, I wish they would send some of those to Indiana, especially Starke county and help all those families without a job to support their families.
As the parent that posted the earlier article, I always make sure my daughters are warm. I stay with them while they are out and between houses my husband keeps the car warm for them to keep warm in. HALLOWEEN is hardly ever nice here. U just dress the kids accordingly not in inappropriate outfits.
One of the reasons jobs don't come here are a lack workers with the required skills. It's also one of reasons a lot of jobs end up going outside America. Shouldn't be any surprise when we read America's students rank 17th in math and science among developed nations. Something to think about when we see poor "school" scores, which some people just blow off as a joke. Don't get me wrong. Parents are mostly, in my opinion, to blame for poor students, not the schools or teachers.
I tried to post a comment regarding the school's poor rating and it apparently was not allowed to post though I have no clue why. I am not at all surprised at this rating as I do feel it is quite accurate. Parent involvement is not always to blame for poor students. I was a very involved parent. I communicated with teachers, administration, bus drivers and anyone who I needed to regarding my kids. I have a child who graduated and was passed on year after year even though ISTEP scores were low, skills were not mastered and these issues were brought to the attention of those who were supposed to be teaching. That child is now an adult who cannot do simple math calculations without a calculator, cannot read and comprehend what is being read and has other issues in daily life relating to skills that should have been mastered in school. I helped with homework as well but the way things are taught in school today only focus on what will be on those tests and not what the kids really need to know to survive in life.
Literacy Volunteers of America is a free organization offering free tutoring to teach adults to read even those award "a certificate of completion==which is sometimes given to students who are passed through grades and not taught to read. It is not accepted in the place of a GED but with free tutoring, such an adult can be taught free to read and get an GED and get accepted into the military.
Ask at the library and a person will receive private free help, it is sad that a person can't read. They are also looking for more volunteers to work one on one to tutor, it is never too late to get help, just ask and accept help that could lead to a job or just to read to one's children. Nobody who wants to learn should do without, education can exist after school.
Well you obviously don't have any children!!! That is part of the fun of Halloween!!! As long as your a responsible parent and dress your children for the weather there is nothing wrong with trick or treating... That's what they make winter coats, gloves, hats and scarfs for...
To The Nov. 3 parent who blames the school for passing her student on year after year for no reason and who now doesn't have basic life skills. Look in the mirror! Nobody forced you to have a child. When you decided to have a child you accept the parental responsibility to raise the child to become a functional adult. You obviously turned your responsibility over to the government, and now you're disappointed that it didn't turn out too well. Year after year, and now you're surprised? It is your responsibility to feed them, cloth them, AND educate them.
IF YOU EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT NOT TO VOTE, you join these who can't:
Those felons in and out of jail,
the died and dying crime victums,
those who accepts whatever those who vote decide for them, military men and women who have served and died in all the wars to defend our freedom to vote, and those who have no backbone to vote their beliefs right or wrong....Of course, you are right others will determine everything from the laws passed to the taxes leveled, however, millionaires are voting so their money can used to avoid taxes, they are self=insured as they donate money for the hospital buildings and most of us middle class voters would like to climb up the millionaire level, but it is not likely to happen. YES, YOU DO HAVE THE LEGAL RIGHT NOT TO VOTE
SO ENJOY THE NEXT CENTURY OF NEW LAWS CREATED BY THE NEW FACES BEING ELECTED ON TUESDAY. BABIES ARE BORN TO THE RICH JUST LIKE TO THE POOR, AND THEY WILL ATTEND THE BEST COLLEGES TO MAKE THEM INTO LAWYERS, BUSINESS MEN AND EVENTUALLY ALLOW THEM TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT, REMEMBER THE 1960S WHEN MEN COULD NOT VOTE FOR THE PRESIDENT WHO SENT THEM INTO AN UNDECLARED WAR UNTIL THEY TURNED 21. And a lot of those young men did not come home alive to vote just like during the Civil War!
To annonymous, Nov. 2, 6:26 am:
Fortunately for you, you are free to move to any other state or country that you feel is better! Go for it!
To Rebecca. You apparently missed the part of my post that talked about my involvement with my child and the school. My child is now working a minimum wage job and doing her best to make ends meet. She is not on any entitlement programs and I have been a RESPONSIBLE parent who did their part. The school still failed to do their part. I guess I should have just home schooled her like so many others do. Oh wait a minute. I could not do that AND work a full time job that provided insurance benefits and food and clothing for my children too. I did choose to have children. My choice to be a single parent rather than raise my kids in an abusive household could not be foreseen at the time I got pregnant. My kids never got free lunches, free books or free anything else. They were raised with the understanding that nothing in life is free. Maybe that is why they both work now and aren't living at home sponging off of me or the government. My point is that the school failed to do their part. Parents do have a role and I did my part, but the school system failed to do theirs.
Imagine being free to cheer or jeer the election results, I wonder if those who have went on to Heaven before us and before they qualified to draw their social security checks, if they are watching and laughing at us mere morals still debating earthly materalistic property that can go fast in the winds of a hurricane, tornado, fire or flood just like in the days of Noah, remember they laughed at him first, but he survived as has mankind ever since....He built the boat that floated without an engineer to draw up the plans.
I'd be embarrassed to admit that I raised a child who couldn't do simple math. The parent is ALWAYS the first and most important teacher. That's the problem. People are always expecting everyone else to raise, teach, and fix their kids. Did you know that, as a parent, you have the ultimate say in your child's education? If you felt that your child was behind, YOU should have been an advocate for them and insisted that they stay behind as soon as YOU noticed there was a problem. Teachers are human. They are not Jesus; therefore, they are not perfect. You should know your child better than anyone else.
I was an advocate for my child from the day we moved to this community. I went to teachers and administrators repeatedly and was told that there was no reason to hold my child back in school. My child was making better than average grades in spite of the fact that she was not learning what she needed to learn to succeed. I did work with her at home on a daily bases. I never said teachers were perfect or that I expected them to do my part in raising my child. I did expect my child to receive some sort of education in the school system that my taxes were supporting. If you have ever had a young person attempt to make change in any local retail setting, you should be well aware of the challenges most of them face in making simple change. Try giving one that extra coin that was not punched in on the register and watch the confused look on their face. It isn't rocket science. It is simple math. Very few of our young adults seem to have mastered these concepts. It is not just my child, but I used mine as an example because I know in our case it was not a matter of lack of involvement from her parent or the parenting skills that were lacking. If I felt that her education was 100% my job, I wouldn't have bothered to send her to school. However, I had no choice but to send her to school since I had to work to feed her and her brother. I wish the voucher system had been in place while my children were still in school so I could have sent them elsewhere.
We to had a child who could not read at the 3rd grade level. We ask the teacher and principal too hold our child back . There answer was NO lets see how he does in the 4th grade. The 4th was no better only worse. We worked ever night at home but the scholl just put him in the SLOW learning glass. Again we ask to have him held back again the answer was NO it will effect our school rateing. This time we went to the Superintendent and school board . Our wishes as parents were heard and he was held back.
He now is in the 7th grade and doing pretty well no longer in the SLOW readers class.
The princapals and teachers main concern was how him not passing would effect the whole school not how it effected the student. There are many stories like this and as long as the schools are graded on the passing of student this will continue to happen. If the teachers and principals worked in the private sector jobs and the employees failed they would be fired for lack of ability to teach and train there employes. Why sould this be any different in schools??????
All the countries ahead of the United States in any list are more homogenous than us.
No child left behind is for one impoossible and secondly none of my business, I got my own to worry about
In the good old days before every cash register was actually a computer, the boss taught their cashiers to take money lay it on the top of the register and count out the change back to the customers. This avoid mistakes, because a customer may have given you a $5 and said it was a $20, now it would be hard to prove as the money is tucked into the register and the change just dumped into your hand. At one store I worked the boss said he could not trust teenagers to know how to measure and cut material. Cashiers are caught in between management and the customers, and they are taught the "customer is always right", because you want to keep their business. Once I ask for a phone number on rolls of quarters, the mother made the child break them all open rather than give me a number. The banks will not take rolls of coins now because people put slugs in them in place of coins. Honesty is still the best policy even if it is sometimes not encouraged. The bank teller who hopped his counter and chased down a bank robber got fired because he broke the store policy in the event of a robbery.
Most honest people know that not every child learns at the same pace or has the same opportunities for help at home as others do. Children are pressured to become adults too fast now,and they do not get to enjoy life while learning at the same time. Nobody a parent or a teacher should be blamed for what happens as child become adults,it is sad today that most children do not enjoy a book like we older people did. I did not have a television until almost out of school, I learned to love to read, a book can take you to lots of places. Most kids like to share a book with an adult, at least they did when I babysat them, it prolonged their lights out time.
I find it funny that people who post on here about how bad the schools are, can not even spell the words right.
What school did you go to?
Or, did you even go to school, or drop out?
I believe that the basic US society is in chaos, meandering thoughts as to what to believe, with no direct foundation anymore. With our first 200 yrs, the church, the Bible, & Christ came first, & people based decisions on that, & wisdom came from that. Now, church attendance is at an all-time low, the media is the main mind manipulator, & people count on the Gov't as the main contributor & source of livlihood. I really see that it all started in early 60's when 1 person got the Bible tossed from our schools. Immediately following, drug use, dropout rate, crime, teen pregancy, all skyrocketed. You'd think our "great scholars" could look back & trace these trends to certain actions, Butttt.....I guess they're too smart for that.
To Nov.4 6:45pm. I hate to say it, but it isn't just here, it is all over. Kids cannot make change without a calculator!!! I have witnessed this outside of this county. I guess it is easier to teach with a calculator than to go back to the basics like we did!!!
I never could spell without a dictionary,I graduated from Knox High School and missed out on Kindergarden as it did not exist when I started school. I even have had a few college courses too. One very smart college student invited me to read her paper for errors, she used spell check but it did not tell her when to us to or too, do you know? I think it is interesting that checking for spelling errors is one job of many editors. Who keyboards in those mistakes? They used have typing classes, that an out of date name.
In response to November 5, 2012 10:00 AM :
Possible, a main reason that many have pulled away from the belief in church and/or religon is that over the same time period that you mention, proven corruption in organized religon "system" has pushed people away from the church. The population in general is still a christian society, however, they have lost faith in the church. Also, you have to figure in the groth factor in your statement. The simple fact that the world population has grown so very much in this period dictated that crime and adverse situations have also grown with it. And let's not forget that with the technology available today, more crimes and social activities than ever are being recorded and/or documented by MANY. Issues that were never reported in the past are being shown to the public in several social media internet sites. I do agree that removing religon from schools was a mistake. However I do not agree it is the reason for the problems in society today.
People who live in glass houses should not throw stones, it is an very old expression. It means if you are perfect then you can complain about everybody else. Native Americans said, Walk a day in my shoes. Same meaning, just a different expression.
Walk among the fallen color leaves,
are they ugly or a good excuse to be
Outside raking leaves,
Exercises the body for free
without leaving home
Windy, sunny days with a white
covering in November
Who could ask more more
Here in Indiana!
What a Negative Attitude about Relocation to Canada:
Reasons not to move there were listed, it just proves the grass is not always greener in another country!
List the average annual income of some places and most Americans would not go there either!
How fortunate I am to live in this area, took an early morning walk, what a beautiful sun this morning!
Gods country out here brothers and sisters
To Anonymous 11-5-12, 10AM: Many of our nation's founding fathers were actually deists; meaning they believed in a higher authority but did not believe in organized religion, Christianity or, especially, the New Testament.
Their position on religion was due in part to their strong desire to break with England, where the Church of England and government were one in the same.
Somehow they were able to reach a compromise between all the conflicting interests and beliefs when founding this country. A good part of that compromise established certain basic laws, like freedom of religion, at the Federal level while leaving the details up to the individual 13 states.
Over the years the Federal government has gotten more involved in religion, which is a mistake in my opinion. Did you know it wasn't until 1954 that Congress modified the Pledge of Allegiance to include the words "under God"?
The point of my post is to say our current political leaders could learn something from our founding fathers, but maybe not what most people would think.
Finally no more negative political ads, life goes on and all is well here in lovely state of Indiana.
What was the voter turnout percentage in Starke County? That looks like the highest numbers that I can recall, but an exact percentage would be interesting to see.
Since the city bought the old laundromat how is it that political signs for one party could be plastered all over it? Maybe there's a good explanation?
I voted Ron Paul, the rest of you will get what you deserve.
I love Indiana, Starke County, and Knox. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I love the change of seasons and yes, I love the snow! I think warm weather people are wimps!!! (exempting the ones with health issues).
51 percent of the registered voters in Starke County voted, which means that 49 percent did not vote. Slightly over one half of our citizens decided who will govern us for the next year. Women only got to vote in 1920, now 19 women are in congress, but none has yet been president. Does that mean women are smart enough to help write the laws, judge the criminals but can't lead or does it mean women prefer men to take the credit for all the mistakes their husbands, boyfriends, uncles, son and grandfathers make regarding laws of our land.
I am out of town and would like to know who won the election for State Senator in the south side of Starke county. Can someone please help me?
If the other 49% would have voted would that have changed the outcome? You don't know that for sure. Also all it means is that America isn't ready for a woman president. Heck we aren't ready for a female vice-president.
about 50% of the country are registered to vote, and 50% of those voted, and roughly 50% of those voted for obama. so 12.5% of the people were for obama, what a landslide!
By that same analysis, even less than 12.5% of citizens of voting age voted for Romney. Or were you assuming those who didn't vote were also for Romney and not Obama? If so, I guess they weren't all that fired up about Romney.
so 12.5% of the people were for obama, what a landslide!
You're the only person that's even mentioned that term in these comments.
CNN. Called it a landslide
NO problem America will probably use the GOOD OLD BOY network to make sure that only men are president and vice president. Frankly as a woman I do not mind blaming Men for the laws that pass and those that are stupid. Remember Nebraska's law letting parents leave children without risk of breaking the law. They had to amend the law to cover just what it meant unwanted babies, but before that one man left a lot of children after his wife died. People were driving there just to leave their troublesome children there. Too bad one can't return adult children to their doctor, maybe the doctors would fix men to keep them from creating more babies. The Chinese promote one boy baby per child, now that those baby boys are grown, there is a shortage of girls to marry those men who survive. If you were a second girl baby, you were either aborted, drown or adopted to rich Americans for a good price, Women are worth something just not to lead a Nation.
Election results for the Indiana State senate race were as folows:
northern half of Starke County the winner was Ed Charbonneau and the southern half was won by Jim Arnold.
I read in the paper where the Christmas tree lighting ceremony will be held across from the rec center. Whe did the tree have to be removed from the courthouse, the center of county occurrences? Is there any traditional feelings left? This is a sad note!
Ed Charbonneau is south of Toto rd and Arnold in North Of Toto road
Does anyone else have a problem with their neighbors dogs doing their business on your property or harassing your animals? Recently my neighbors large dog chased down my grandson ...in my yard. Scared him to death. I called the sheriffs department and unfortunately our county does not have a leash law. Time to start one!!!
THANK YOU to all veterans!!!!We are where we are today because of you!!!
I am here because of my heritage, not phony wars
Concerning the proposed jail site, is it the corner of 550 East and State Road 8 or corner of 500 East and State Road 8? As a resident in a subdivision of newer and very nice homes on 500 East, I'm concerned about my property values if it is 500 East and State Road 8. Not to mention the addedd traffic on 500 East by the Sheriff's Department at high rates of speed.
Indiana has a leash law calling for the restraining of all dogs. There may not be a county law regarding this, but if you are told there are no leash laws, that is WRONG!
Jail Property Sounds like its a done deal. Call Commissioner Norem as she is the one on WKVI. When was the public meeting to discuss this site . Isn't it the law that they have to have one? Anyone know if they have too.
This NEW JAIL location is not practable at all. Hwy 8 is not able to handle consistant emergency response travel at all. To go & place a jail in the middle of a low-key residential neighborhood is very "near-sighted", for they're only taking into account..."oh, look...there's 10 acres we can buy!" It starts with infrastructure, & that area will require ALOT of upgrade to accomodate..at what cost? What about future expansion? Do you want a new jail smack-dab in the middle of soccor fields & houses? Also, Hwy 8 will NEVER be able to be expanded to 4 lane traffic, due to proximity of houses on 8. I just don't understand why a location, such as the property across from Rockwell, or the back side of the Industrial Park, or Hwy 35 wouldn't be better for the long distant future. But that residential neighborhood is a terrible idea.
Tuesday night, the states of Colorado and Washington sent a loud and clear message to the federal government that they no longer wish to enforce the futile prohibition on cannabis. The symbolic impact of these victories are immediate, but what are the practical effects on the ground now that these two initiatives have been approved? WASHINGTON In Washington State, regulations for the marijuana retail outlets are going to start being drafted by the Washington State Liquor Control Board. This process is expected to last about a year.
In addition to the historic Election Day votes in Colorado and Washington, voters in several cities in Massachusetts and Michigan also decided overwhelmingly in favor of ending marijuana prohibition.
Massachusetts voters in over 40 municipalities — representing approximately one-fifth of the electorate — voted in favor of local (non-binding) public policy questions in favor of ending the criminalization of cannabis for adults. A complete tally of these public policy questions and results is available here. (Voters in Burlington, Vermont also passed a similar non-binding legalization measure.)
In Michigan, voters in four cities – totaling over a million people – also decided on Election Day to legalize or depenalize the adult use of cannabis. Sixty-five percent of voters in Detroit approved Proposal M, removing local criminal penalties pertaining to the possession on private property of up to one ounce of marijuana by adults over age 21. In Flint, voters approved a citizens’ initiative to amend the city code so that the possession on private property of up to one ounce of marijuana or cannabis paraphernalia by those age 19 or older is no longer a criminal offense. Grand Rapids voters approved Proposal 2 to allow local law enforcement the discretion to ticket first-time marijuana offenders with a civil citation, punishable by a $25 fine and no criminal record. Finally, in Ypsilanti, 74 percent of voters decided in favor of a municipal proposal that makes the local enforcement of marijuana possession offenses the city’s lowest law enforcement priority.
Anyone else notice how gas went up to 3.59 today. Yep election is over. Back to business as usual.
Are you people really in favor of legalizing a mind altering drug??!! Isn't there enough carnage on our highways now that you want more? Picture you and your family on Route 30 with a stoner behind the wheel of a 130,000 lb. semi barreling down on you from behind. And this is what you want??!! Federal laws prohibiting marijuana were enacted for the benefit and wellbeing of all, not to be discarded for the recreational behavioral choices of a few selfish people. Don't tell me about the medical benefits of marijuana, and the few it could help. You only want this drug for your recreation. Here we go again with 0.01% of the people dictating what the rest of us will get!
When oil prices go up $3.00 a barrel gas prices then raise .29 cents a gallon. When oil prices drop $3.50 a barrel gas prices drop .05 cents a gallon. This all happened in the last week or so. Of course, to put it bluntly, we are all getting screwed over.
.01%........try closer to 50%...once the "greatest generation", and I use that term quite loosely, dies off the majority will be there. Of course that is a horrid democracy approach.
Your philosphy is a communistic one. This country is based on an individual(republic) vs. Mob rules(democracy). If it was only .01%, it does not matter, as long as that small % or individual is RIGHT.
Barreling down the road?? , try 55mph, 10 n 2 looking for a drive thru.
Remember the prohibition was built around a single mans testimony that he took two tokes of a joint and TURNED INTO A BAT. Your highway 30 anaolgy holds as much water.
I am only worried for the texters and presrciption junkies
You keep eating your prescription pills
I am not going to express any opinion on marijuana usage, for that is a personal/private decision.
I do know the federal government has zero say so in the matter.
Who are you or the guv to tell you what you can or can not put into your body. What you do on your own property/house is the owners choice also. A consenting adult does not need told. You wanna pop into my bedroom at night and critique that, too.
As far as driving, there are laws enacted to prevent such and laws enacted to squash any scenerio you can scheme up. Prohibition is never the remedy. Though laws pertaining to marijuana/driving are very erroneous ! Marijuana is fat soluble. It can cling to the fat cells for months. So ultimately you can have injested marijuana last month, but test positive and be arrested for a "driving under the influence" today.
Wow, .01% won at the polls ?!?!
Xoxo
Here we go again with 0.01% of the people dictating what the rest of us will get!
0.01%?
The voting returns show your estimation to be a bit off.
If you hit my car and it comes out that you are on dope,I'll sue you for everything you have. Which probably isn't very much , so light up.
Yes pot is becoming legal, gay marriage is next. Remember when American's had backbones. I hate my generation. We called it America.
In all honesty, I dabbled in both pot & alcohol in college, & alcohol is far more dangerous. Pot just made me & people I know drive slower & more cautious. I've never seen anybody hallucinate on pot. But from a standpoint of gaining wisdom & maturity, I wish I'd neber wasted ANY time on pot or alcohol, for both are a total waste of the potential greatness of life. I don't think it should be legalized, but nor do I think it should cost taxpayers billions to fight & incarcerate. Just give big tickets. Employers have their own discretion as to hire a user, but I sure wouldn't want a stoned press operator or anyone that could danger my life. THERE IS A REASON IT'S CALLED DOPE. I also don't believe a user should be eligible for Gov't benefits. But I do think it should be legal for those fighting disease, chronic pain, etc. if proven helpful. Otherwise, stay straight, keep your edge, & quit looking for ways/excuses to escape life.
The greatest generation you disdain so much, because they suffered through depression and a world war, worked to ensure you did NOT have to, that you would have what they didn't. They never intended for you to develope an entitlement ethic, but to work on passing on the good life to the next generation, not a "free" life! Personally, I don't care how you damage yourself, but when your behavior begins to effect others, it becomes a public problem. There are NO happy pills in this life, and this free ride will not last!
Entitlement, ?....the new deal and great society period happened then too. Social security, medicaid, medicare. The world wars had ZERO to do with us.
We have been in a depression for 4 years and never in our nations history have we fought TWO wars at once and fought those two wars as long as any in our history. Obomeneycare is a horrid entitlement program comparable to thoese I listed above. So save me the violin story of your past, there has been a heavy, gradual toll on every generation that lives today.
What's wrong with being happy. Lighten up. My original point was one really of a typical generational gap, specific to the topic.
Psst, we came to this country to be FREE !
Hey Chuck,
Darm straight we need more backbone, but standing up to something harmless(marijuana) is quite cowardly.
Please do not mix it with such immoral acts as homosexuality and suing people.

THATS IT PEOPLE LET IT OUT TELL TRUITH WHATS RIGHT WHATS WRONG SPILL THOSE BEANS ..... AMEN
I don't care if you smoke pot at home. You get in a car,and hit me and there is a chance one of my family could get hurt you will pay. Oh and by the way smoking pot is very cowardly, cause people you do it are too scared to face reality or have damaged so many brain cells they aren't sure what reality is. Anyone who believes it is harmless is definitely not all there.
"What's wrong with being Happy"
If you need an illegal drug to be happy ,are you really "Happy".
Oh dear, I'm sorry, I didn't realize, please forgive me, I should have known: IT'S ALL ABOUT YOU!!!
chuck,
You were doing great till you got a lil' defensive and went straight "reefer madness" propaganda.
Boy, I sure got some of your goats. I could care less. Point is never give up your freedoms and keep your nose in your own business, to each his own brother, glass houses people. I will always cheer on for what we all deserve, less government intervention.
I only wish you felt like I do, I can decide and take care of me and my own
When are we going to get serious about breaking into 3 countries? Clearly the 2 coasts should govern themselves collectively. Then they can have gay marriage, legalize illegal immigration, prostitution, legalize all drugs, gun control, abortion, government-run health care, unlimited entitlement programs, mega taxes, unmanageable debt, and then live it up until they collapse under the weight of their own anything-goes-immorality and complete fiscal irresponsibility. Why not let the HEART OF AMERICA have our own country and live our lives, raising our families with simple morality, common sense, hard work, American prosperity, religious liberty, and neighborly love? I'm serious. Wouldn't that be better than washing down a shrimp cocktail with a bottle of Dom Perignon on the deck of the Titanic? Who's with me?
Enrollment for 4-H is now open. You have to register online. Registration is $15.00 per child. You can pay online with a credit/debit card or pay in person at the extension office.
I soooo long for this blog to POSSIBLY be used in a MEANINGFUL WAY, like: we needs volunteers to help at this fundraiser..or, does anyone know of anybody hiring...or, can get get volunteers to drive for meals on Wheels, or help at Nursing Homes, or schools, or Clean the Park Day, or plant flowers in town day, or shovel elderlys' sidewalks list...just an endless amount of good communication & projects that could benefit from this blog. BE POSITIVE PEOPLE...LOOK FOR GOOD TO DO...& QUIT BEING COMPLAINERS!
Yeah Chuck you shouldn't use "propaganda" like proven science. Besides you should know you can't argue with someone who sees unicorns and flying monkeys.ahahahaha
like the post about helping others, there are always need for volunteers. Helping others is good for the soul. God looks down on us for being there for others. Give to the food pantry, I took food the other day and the shelfs were pretty bare. Sponsor a family for Christmas. Give a little will go a long way just seeing their joy. Have a blessed Holiday.
It's called Europe, go getcha a one way, pal.
This country is going down, and each time they take GOD out of something, it goes down even further!

China seems to be doing very well as a non-Christian nation and even owns more of America than any other country. How do you explain only 4% of Chinese are Christians and 42% are agnostics or atheists? Are they on the way down or the way up? Or would you say this just proves America is on the way down. Something to think about.
What is that horrible odor in Knox??!! It seems to be centered right around the scrap yard on 35. The odor was there yesterday, it was worse this morning, and tonight it has drifted into Knox city limits and is absolutely horrendous!
It is liquid hog manure being spread on Nagi farm east of 35 on Toto Rd.
Not to worry, hog manure apparently smells much better than an ethanol plant, haha
JUST 6 DAYS until we can request Tom's favorite song, GRANDMA GOT RAN OVER BY THE REINDEER. Please request every time he plays a SNOW song.

TO Nov 15 6:20pm. No what that says is that China doesn't have to bother with EPA laws or labor laws or trade agreements and rules. The reason China owns more of America is because politicians love money and have sold us out. If China is doing better it's not because they are a non- Christian nation. Your arguement is lame at best.
My suggestion for the hog farmers, disk it into the ground as you are spreading it to help keep the stinch down. The smell takes my appetite away. Just one more reason to be completely against hog containment operations.
Yeah, that stench from the hog fertilizer is TERRIBLE. It even creeps into the house. Unreal! I'm all for supporting farmers, but they need to have more respect for the people who have to put up with the smell. There also needs to be regulation on the irrigation systems they're using, for it was totally obvious the water table dropped IMMEDIATELY after they turned them on early last summer. All the neighboring ponds dropped 2-3' within a week, & even some of the neighbors shallow wells went dry. I repeat, all for supporting farmers, but when their actions affect the livlihoods of those around them, steps need to be taken. But, I still thank God for farmers.
One reason your pond dropped was the drought . Those wells for irrigation our 100 ft deep or more. so they dont affect your ponds .

Clearly the reason for the decline of the U.S. economy has nothing to do with the questionable economic policies of the last 35 years; It's a simply a lack of faith.
Knox finally made Channel 16 with its story about the adoptions at our courthouse. The little red haired boy was adopted by his grandparents, they attend my church. It was nice to show a good side of our community on television. Good things still happen to good people in our town.
I was at the adoption ceremony yesterday and was so impressed. The kids were so cute. The judge was very compassionate. The laywers were respectible. The camera people were quiet and didn't intrude. Just a first class operation and Starke County should be proud. I was adopted and have adopted one child and I think that something like this could encorage others to adopt.
This wasn't just his pond, ours dropped as soon as the irrigation was turned on too. Yes, drought was a long term factor, but I could measure the drop daily. Then, it was off for a few weeks, & my water went up a bit. These irrigation systems run on 12" wells, pumping out 100's of thousands of gallons daily, & you don't think it affects water table levels? You're wrong on this one.
I am hoping that the County Council will consider all concerns/comments expressed by Starke County citizens in reference to the new jail location that were brought up at the council meeting. I realize we need a new jail but I think the location needs to be reconsidered, esp when you have the majority of adjacent land owners expressing the same concerns. Hopefully our elected officials will pull through for the taxpayers of the county.
Property needs by municipalities are settled by more than just needs or availability. And some times the end result doesn't indicate the process involved.
Well, the election is over, and gas prices are down again on Road 30, yesterday it was $3.279 and another place it was $3.359, last week it was $3.449 in Plymouth with the Wal-Mart Card which took off 10 cents a gallon. Does any know what it is there today in Plymouth? Millionaire Americans still getting rich and playing with gas prices.
Citizens and taxpayers should be aware, if they are not already, improvements to the approaches to the new jail will have to be made at your expense, sidewalks and a widened road at least! Not everyone seeking to visit the Sheriff's Dept for whatever reason have access to vehicles. Building the new dept on Rt 8 is effectively isolating the department from the public.
Wow China also has a limit on the number of kids you can have, and forced abortion. Are you ready to sign up for that to? If so, I personally will purchase one way tickets for you and your family.
Wow China also has a limit on the number of kids you can have, and forced abortion. Are you ready to sign up for that to? If so, I personally will purchase one way tickets for you and your family.
Nice example of a straw man argument.
You missed the mark. Nobody suggested implementing similar policies here. Sorry.
The grass is always greener some other place than home. Rich and poor exist in China, the poor work in sweat type jobs for little pay in factories next to the rich living in their mansions. Only their poor was like we once were when there was no laws to protect any workers, and the factory owners were the rich bosses, you know like that business man who ran for president would have enjoyed taking the poor back to the extreme while keeping his money invested outside of America.
To the citizens of Starke Co In . In reference to building a new jail. Has any citizen stepped up and said build it here or build it there. No they just say don't build it by me. This shows very little respect for you felllow citizens.
I will not matter where the elected officials select for the jail . A few or many will complain. If the elected officials do their job correctly they will pick a site that has the least impact of the citizens and spends their tax dollars the best.
Does anyone know who the transportation director for the Knox School Corp. is or who is responsible for calling in delays?
We are always the last to make this announcement far behind NJ-SP schools and South Central-Wanatah. For parents working in the eastern time zone this is a real inconvenience.
Unions are a factor in sending jobs to China.
Hostess anyone ?
The Federal Reserve System is the major factor to our economic woes.
Japan actually is the majority holder in our bad debt, not China. This junk debt would just be defaulted on, so saying China or Japan owns us is not the whole picture.
Lack of faith is right up there with the federal reserve(central bank) and phony, costly wars as in regard to where our nation sits today. These are the only three ways to ruin a country:
1. establish a central bank, 1913. Remember the industrial revolution was enabled by no central bank.
2. lengthy wars plunder countries
3. lack of faith.
unions, ohsa, nafta, cafta, "green"...these are all commie philosophies that contribute to our countries ruin
thanks to the knox school board for planning for no school today, knowing that there would be a fog delay anyway, and doing this over a year ago. good job. pass the turkey.
I remember reading something in the news a year or two ago about power outages along 8 east of Knox. Seems like it was either the county police or Knox police that said as soon as they hear of a power outage along 8, they head that way, because they know someone has hit one of the power poles that are so close to the roadway. Maybe the utility will be forced to move the poles back if the county jail is located along 8. Jail or not, those poles along 8 are a big hazard. Would property owners raise a fuss? Probably, but the utility must already have rights to a certain distance into their yards. This is probably just a case of the utility not wanting to go to the expense unless there is a big enough public concern raised.
It's a terrible decision to build the jail on Hwy 8, for there's no way it can handle more traffic, & can not be expanded to 4 lane. The commishes are just looking for a cheap place. Ya know, I'm sure there's cheap farmland near the commishes house, why not build it there? It really shouldn't even reach the point of disfruntling neighbors, for that area has alot of housing growth, & would be a total disrespect to those living in the area. The plain fact that the location has no potential to handle the traffic, nor infrastructure is ALONE a reason to find a better place...unless they want it near a rail to ship "convicts" out. Then there's the far proximity from the court house? Frankly, I am just shocked that they've chosen this location, I KNOW I could find better locations that would please residents & not cause these issues.
In regards to the new Jail Location
To Anonymous posting at 348am. Obviously you are nor aware of the current situation and are concerned enough to not list your name. As far as not having respect for fellow citizens- I'm not sure how you consider the traffic and safety concern a lack of respect for others. If being concerned about the safety of my family and neighbors is being selffish- then yes I guess I am and would have to say I am proud of having that humility. I am not against the jail. We desperately need one. I think a better location could be found. Why not consider other sites that are not as inhabited- such as the stelarema location, or the area where the factories are. The fact of the matter is there will be an increase in fatalities here and I dont want that to happen. I'm sure if was happening at your location you would not be happy either. What is wrong with building on the current site? We already have the property, utilities, and sewage. The answer the council gave was because of asbestos in the existening jail-- that doesnt even make sense. By the way, I do agree you will never make everyone happy but when the majority of the immediate property owners have signed a petition and expressed concerns- I would think that in a Democracy our voices should be considered. We will all be paying for this jail so we should be able to have a say!
Another consideration is that Sabre expressed possible interest in the location if the economy picks up. I think jobs are important to this community and he has already increased his workforce more than 5 times by what he started with. Why put the jail on a site where it wont effect our communities employment opportunities.
To anonymous at 1134 am. You should come to the next town meeting. They are supposed to make a final decision next Tuesday at 9am. I have a feeling they have already made their mind up but the tax payers should be able to express their opinion.
why not build the jail where sysco was going to be built?
1. Plenty of access to highways
2. Infrastructure is already there
3. Use the brand new water tower that is not being used.
4. There is plenty of heavy duty electricity- already there.
5. It is 6 miles from the courts, but they have video conferencing.
Just a thought... use what you already have that you are not using.
I like the sysco idea too. I dont think there are any 'Close' houses there. And the courthouse won't matter since they are planning on building a courtroom, judge & jury chambers in the new facility.
The jail has been in the works for at least a year. If anyone paid attention, a number of sites were looked at (duh) and the land proposed is the best. As to the "increased traffic", WHAT???? Have you seen the location of the current jail? Next to a bakery,(last time it was robbed was??) a funeral home, a number of residential homes (yes, houses where real people live with their kids) and the courthouse and annex. One would like the traffic would be better. Hwy 8 can't handle it? Sure it can and the state will most likely work with the county to make sure it will. So get over it. It's going to be somewhere. Just hope I don't have to make a visit.
I think the new jail site is a good one, it is not close to me so I am happy. But even if the site is good , building it now is wreckles, the economy is not stable enough. The commisioners should have to consign the loan. And how is it economic development? It's more of an economic drain.
I think the sysco site is a great idea too. I heard the town is talking about shutting the tower down since they dont use it
Within 12 month of the jail opening there will be a casualty within 12 months being where it is planned. I would make a bet with anyone. If that is worth it to them then they can live with it. I know a lot of people moving on 8. Might as well let them share the soccer field with the 500 kids in soccer. Why didn't this get brought up before the election?
Anonymous @ 4:45 pm. I can't decide if you are part of the council, not a home owner, dont care about your community or are a frequent flyer to the jails housing and are trying to get on someone's good side. Obviously by your remarks and the fact that you wont stand behind your comments by putting your name means that you must be one of the above. Maybe you should list your address and we can see if they can build by you and then I bet your opinion would be somewhat changed. to address your comments:
1. As far as being a year in the making--it has been more than that. I am a former county employee (9 years ago) and at that time the need for a new jail was being discussed. So you are incorrect on that. There were other proposed sites but all of a sudden this one was the ideal one. Having never been mentioned before. Property owners in the area were not notified. A mailing would have been nice. Everyone at the meeting had the same complaint. We had no idea it was even a possible site until 2 weeks ago. When I called the Sheriffs dept to find the location and time of the meeting it took 2 calls on the day of the meeting before someone could give me that information--so we absolutely were NOT aware it was even being considered and since the sheriffs dept did not even know details about the meeting--communication is an issue here
2. Traffic- the current location has been in existence for years. People that bought houses there knew what they were buying. As for break ins-- really a funeral home-- what would you steal! Theft is NOT my concern, although studies I have read had shownan increase in car theft in areas my jails. The traffic will increase and st road 8 cannot handle it. The speed is going to be an issue at this location-- visibility is not good d/t the rr tracks and traffic speeding over it. INDOT will not get involved so this problem is ours and will only become worse with the jail traffic- employees, visitors, citizens doing business, and vendors- to name a few. As far as safety-- maybe you would like to have kids and live by there--If you have been by the one up town esp on visitors days there are a ton of people outside loitering- I do not want this in my neighborhood.
3. As for your advice to get over it, maybe you should think about all of the citizens of the county. I would not want this in any residential area- including yours. Although I am sure that the decision is final I will continue to express my opinion as that is our right.
PS--remember as a fellow tax payer we will be paying for this new jail for a long time through our taxes. I think the county needs to find a site that doesnt cause so much displeasure amongst the land owners in that area.
They need to reconsider sites that do not have as much growth in the area and current residential land. On st rd 8 there have been several houses built by 500 over the last couple years- some are still being built. Sabre has expressed a desire to buy the land if the economy increases. Like I said before his company has grown sustantially despite the way the economy has been. So why not find a site that wont affect not only the safety of the area but also potential growth---I think we can agree our county needs the growth.

I think the proposed site on SR 8 is as good as it's going to get. I see a lot of pluses. Sure there are people living nearby with concerns, but any county or city service is going to have neighbors. It wouldn't bother me to live close to the sheriff, fire dept., hospital, or any public service. I would feel a lot safer than living out in the boondocks where I now live.
A new jail on highway 8, maybe the sheriff department can give a lot of tickets outm Highway is nothing but a racetrack, I have relatives that live on that highway and the cars do not drive 55 miles an hour. There are so many accidents on that road because they think highway 23 is a through highway. The school bus does a double turn so that the kids are left off the bus on side of door opening to their drive way. Cars have not stopped for school buses.
Sysco? That sounds like put the jail anywhere except by me. Sysco would be way too far out for legal proceedings, visitors, medical needs, etc. I hear about doing things by video, but that only works if both parties have video capabilities. Most do not. Besides, why would Sysco sell the county just 10 acres, with the best highway access, out of the 320 acres they own out there?
Talk about naive, rebuild on the present jail site? One of the main problems is space. That's, what, 2 city lots? To get 10 acres would require a skyscraper.
Seriously, I like the idea of putting the jail on the proposed Bailey property. Makes a lot of sense. Maybe concerns will go away when neighbors realize they have a top priority for clearing snow & ice from those roads.
We dont have a problem now with snow removal and even if we did that few times a year is no trade off for safety year round.
We are anything but naive. They could build up 2 or 3 levels and have enough space. This avenue would be cheaper for the taxpayers of Starke county.
the only reason the jail can be built is the county side stepped the law. they got the law makers of indiana to allow EDIT tax to be raised and spent on a building project, and at this dollar amount it would have had to been voted on by the county during the election. at the meeting the question of jail road entry was not answered or i missed it, if you have the driveway off of hwy 8 you will need basicly an off ramp, or the cheaper way is to enter off of 550E across from the houses. which is it. the county had there meating last tuesday to speek of only one site, then county business days later at 9am they will have another meeting to approve the site. only 2 business days makes if impossible for anyone with a complaint to reseach and take action. other purchases have to follow certain time frames and newspaper postings, why doesnt this have to follow same type of plan. why the cost of the property stated at the meeting, someone said the price was 1/2 million dollars for the 10 acres. the building on hwy 8 had been used as a youth center in the recent past, on this blog you read posts about county needing a youth center, close a youth center to build a jail. i tried to seach the web to see what property tax this area brings in, but i am confussed with my findings, so this is not 100% fact, it looks to me that this building was a non-profit and paid no tax, i need more time, but county gave 2 business days between meetings.
If the people saying to build up on the current jail had been attending meetings on this all along (which were well advertised), they would know that the current jail site was reviewed and it is not structurally able to handle the amount of building up that would be needed to meet the current needs.
All county meetings are posted on the doors of the county annex (probably the courthouse too) and are on the county web site. Agendas are supposed to be posted to the web site prior to the meeting, but that doesn't always happen.
I agree that the current site makes sense. Unfortunately, there are always going to be people who say "don't put it by me". This site already has city sewers and water and is in close proximity to town for medical treatment of inmates, court hearings, etc. Gas is expensive so driving them to and from these services will add up the farther it is out of town.
Stelrema makes no sense at all since that building was built long ago and would need so many upgrades, they would basically have to demolish it and rebuild. They stated at the meeting that the jail has to meet certain standards regarding holding up to tornado, earthquake, etc. That building on the Stelrema site is not built that way and I assume it would take a lot to correct those deficiencies. It also does not have city utility services so that would be an additional big expense.
There are many things that can go in right next to you without you being notified that affect your property values.
I believe that the jail site in question on 8 is a commercial zoned site NOT a residential site. So your not going to have houses there. I would think a jail would be a lot quieter then a factory. I live near one of the spots looked at. Wouldn't brother me. Sounds safe.
Read between the lines folks, I said municipal property needs are settled by more than just needs and availability. That being said again, picture this. Those seeking visitation with inmates, walking down Route 8, on your lawns or in the middle of the road, venting anger because their friend or relative is in jail! How about a court ordered mandatory bus service so "rights" aren't violated. Guess who pays for that? Enter the state who will exercise highway rights of way from the centerline, talk about disruption! Have all the downsides to this property been considered, were they ever considered? Are the taxpayers jumping into something that really hasn't been vetted entirely? Seems that more hearings are needed on this as the prime property creates some insurmountable challenges to citizens rights, that need to be discussed. What's the hurry, these discussions have been ongoing for awhile now, couple more weeks....what does it hurt?
Nice points
Zonings can be the changed. You are correct on the current zones. Occupied resident dwellings are surrounding that property in close proximity.
Exactly for some reason this site is being pushed quickly. Very well stated. I have heard from other countries that when inmates are released and don't have a ride they are told to walk. I m not feeling secure if this happens either.
Thank you WKVI for having this discussion board and letting all citizens voice their opinion. This is a nice service you provide
I hope the commissioners are reading...
Wow! No tax but my house is $2,000 a year just a half mile from there. I do not know if anyone has said anything and it wasn't posted or I am the only one wondering but why did the current land owners decide to sell? I know it wasn't on the market. Another thing is I remember the county giving the old owner of General Woodworker a loan that was not paid back the the property sold at auction. So we lose the money, then sell for cents on the dollar then by back for a premium? Where else in Knox has anyone paid that much for 10 acres? They might as well buy all the land on the soccer field road and build a prison where they can take in prisoners from other counties that don't have a clue like us. At least then the're would be jobs available and if ran efficient they could make money and lower our taxes.
At least people won't let there kids play outside and women won't be able to go on walks fearing one of the hoodlum visitors on meth will attack them or an inmate will. They don't care about the reasons why people moved to that neighborhood! I'm sure there will be some good deals on houses. You can afford the tax since you can buy them for half price.
TO 5:11 AM- Sysco DOES NOT own that property- They have Option to buy. Is that the same as owning the property? Last time I checked, it is not. Maybe you have some different information about the ownership that you would like to share?
Thank you also wkvi for providing this blog, the commissioners/county council members are reading and responding..
This is going to sound like I'm defending our commissioners, but I'm just being realistic. The search for a new jail site didn't just happen. It's been going on for a long time. I doubt anyone posting here has spent anywhere near as much time as our commissioners have spent looking at possible sites or visiting other county jails. I have a lot of respect for them and believe they are doing the right thing, even if a few people are unhappy. Let's face it, there are going to be unhappy people regardless of the site chosen. Just like the election, it comes down to what the majority of our citizens want not a minority.
I'm really curious. How many people have been attacked in the town of Knox by people visiting inmates at the current jail or by inmates being released? I've never heard of that happening. I would much rather have the jail next to me than the drug dealers that leave their meth labs in my woods.
To the 744 am post. This site actually did 'just' happen. At the commisioners meeting last week they stated the this site was not one being considered and that the land owner (Baileys) approached them. So, for us in that area we had no idea because it wasnt a proposed site. Then all of a sudden it is 'the' site.
I'm sure the commisioners have put alot of time into this over the last 10+ years, but those in office wanted that position as they were not forced to run in the election.
I agree we need at new jail and am not even upset at the increase taxes we will be paying because we do need it.
As for there will always be a complainer- that is true BUT I am 100% positive that a more remote location can be found that is not in such close proximity to occupied houses. Lets face it the these people in Jail are not upstanding citizens (very few are innocent)- so who would want them in close proximity to their residence.
As for the majority-- you are right but the MAJORITY of the property owners in the immediate area do not want it and have legitimate concerns. The Majority of the county population is happy its going here because ITS NOT BY THEM-- some have even stated that on here. In this case the minority if majority of the area and should be listened to.
I ask again---Why was a question about the jail not proposed on the November election ballet? Why the SUDDEN push for this specific site? Why are the commisioners not concerned about public safety in the area being proposed- do they want it on their conscience when the first of many fatalities occur here due to their poor decision?
Also as for the Stelarema building not being up to code for 911-- that is true but neither is the 'Bailey building---at the meeting they said they will have to build that. So it would be the same scenerio.
In driving around today- just on 35 I saw several open sites some in city limits with no existing residence close-- I am not thinking any of these were on the list of consideration???????
Also why is the meeting at 9am-- when the majority of land owners are at work and not in the evening when they could attend? After all the concners I would think another public meeting should be offered -- allowing citizens time to do some research as well as the council on the concerns so they can better be addresed. This is huge for our county and will forever change a neighborhood.
im sure that somewhere/somehow theres gonna be some pockets getting filled with the "sudden push".......i meen be realistic ! why else would this place just come to light. my question is if theres such a concern over distance, traffic, safety and so on why wasnt the area next to the moose used ? close proximity to the courthouse AND city hall PLUS PLUS PLUS even being a jail....just think how much that would improve the looks of that space. we all know the city could use a face lift.
The Ft Wayne Police Department is looking for a K-9. Maybe they would be interested in the Knox K9 officer since we cannot seem to continue the program here>

The question was asked and it needs some consideration: Why does this decision need to be made in such a hurry? This is a big decision that will impact lives for years to come, so lets get it right! Everyone is a NIMBY on this topic(NotInMyBackYard), and that's very understandable. So the suggestion has been made about land around the MOOSE. Could there be a more perfect spot if at all possible. If it is an expense thing that removes this area from consideration, remember, this will be a one time project in our lifetimes, lets get it right regardless of expense(within reason of course)!
I have yet to see, in my lifetime, any govermental agency building erected without the cries of "foul". Cronyism, favoritism, visions of grandeur, oh you've heard them all. Hopefully, on a project of this magnitude, our county board will listen to all who wish to be heard on this matter. What may be seen as petty to some, may be big in other eyes.
Say what? With all these concerns, me thinks some of you wish you had been more involved in what's going on in the community sooner.
With all the drugs in the area why get rid of the dog, I know the officer left, I am sure a new person will be hired that person could work the the , just needs to be part of the job requirement. Or a none officer could work the dog.
I really wish I could give more of myself, to my church, to my town, the schools, volunteering, just anything to help people & make my community a better place. I really love Starke Co. w/ all my heart. But in these times, it just seems like there's barely enough time to do enough to get by. With work, kids, sports, it's endless. But my New Year's Resolution is to volunteer the whole year for at least 1 worthy cause. Got some ideas, but would like somebody to post a list of oranizations that need volunteer work. $ is tight, but would be honored to give of the time The Lord blesses me with.
Literacy Volunteers of America would welcome you just for an hour or so a week to help an adult learn to read. Ask at the Knox Public Library, they have supplies and it won't cost you anything but a little time each week to help another person.
With Christmas approaching fast. And with the majority of us numb to its true meaning anymore, I was wondering if there are any shelters or organizations where my family and I could volunteer a hand at ?
Being a traditionalist, I am going to pass on the Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the community center.
GO NOTRE DAME!!!!!!! WOOO HOOOO WIN IT ALL!!!!!!! & GO REDSKINS, TOO!!!!!!!!!!!! & GO IU BASKETBALL!!!!!!!....Wow, with this streak....maybe this WILL be the Cubs year!!!!!
Are all the locations for the new jail going to be discussed Tuesday or just the Bailey property.
Making Highways 39 & 14 a 4 way stop won't make any difference if the people are like the ones here in Starke County. They won't stop for the signs anyway. I also think using the Sysco site is a good idea
People are in way too big a hurry. Please don't tell me things are different these days, either. That's just a frame of mind spread by advertising. I try to be a defensive driver and when you're in that mode, you notice all kinds of reckless behavior on the roads. I saw a lady just yesterday make a right turn at a stop sign for her, not for my street, without even thinking about stopping or even looking my way. She was driving a SUV, on her cell phone and, I guess, thought she was the center of the universe.
It's not just soccer moms, either. I saw a contractor kind of guy recently drive right through a red light. It sure looked to me like he was texting. I'll give him this; he was only doing about 20mph, but I sure never saw his brake lights come on.
Nor is it just the roads. I see people all the time driving way too fast in parking lots. Makes me sick to think what would happen if a small child darted in their path.
All it takes is for a person to be in the wrong place at the wrong time to be involved in a needless tragedy.
On Monday WKVI said jail site to be selected . On Tuesday jail site is expected to be selected. In the body of the article it states jail site to be discussed . Which one is it. What time is the meeting , where is the meeting , is it open to all.
The meeting is today (Tuesday) at 9 a.m. at the county annex building in the meeting room on the main floor. The agenda is posted on the county web site under the "commissioners" tab. On the agenda it says "Decision on the project site of the new county jail". Unless it is an executive session, the meetings are open to the public but very few people attend.
I think I might feel a little safer with the jail near me. All the cops there and the dispatchers right there. Just sayin'.
With all those who keep returning to jail, it might save money to use them in the building process, it would save money for them to make their home nice and cozy for the future. Individuals who use it as a revolving home away from home and never learn to walk straight, need to be educated on the purpose to avoid future problems like breakouts, fires and conflicts between each other. Even having to clean up after the workers every day would provide much need exercise to those using the place. Maybe indivdual cells will their names above them would give them some pride in the place.
Why is the county going to pay $2,000.00 more than the property was appraised at. Are we that rich a county that we can just give money away?
You mean $200,000. Why did we loan money on it and lose it 20 years ago?
