Happy New Year Starke County Citizens! Let's try to make this year the most memorable and positive year yet!

I do not really follow the areas basketball season or teams except for what i"ve heard around town and what i've read on here. But it seems like the coach or coaches have no need to be in the positions they are in. I am certain any one of us could inherit a team and do just as well the first season until the stars move on and we actually have to "coach" the up and comers. Seems like it's Knox tradition to hold on dearly to these loser individuals. With the talent that goes well underused in Knox it's nice to see that we stick with the old saying"if you do what you've always done you'll always get what you've always got".

You know, it seems as if basketball teams go through phases. One season one team is awsome, and then a few seasons later not so much. All of these athletes give it their best and I don't care what school they play for, they should all me commended for their participation in this wonderful sport!!!!!!!!!!

To the person wanting to help out with community activities in Knox or anyone else wanting to help. The Friends of the Park always needs people to help with their events during the year. They meet the first Monday of the month at the Girls Scout Cabin at 7 pm. The next meeting is Feb. 7th. I'm sure they will need help with the Harvest Festival, Cruise Night and 50's Night.

May Andys mother now rest in peace.
Please evereone here , love your family and your friends. Hold them close, you never know what is to come. Andy was the most wonderful person in our class. I have never forgotten him through all these years.

I really liked this comment & agree, it's not how much $....BUT WHAT'S IN YOUR HEART & YOUR EFFORTS......"To December 31 Anonymous. Look at what you wrote. "My wife and I would love to get involved with the happenings of Knox but we do not seem to own expensive vehicles or be blessed with one of maybe ten last names that you need to be heard in our community." History is filled with people who had no money or status, but had an idea to help others and put it into motion. Volunteer at a school, nursing home, or hospital. Start a food drive or coat and hat drive. Take a couple of friends and pick up trash to make the city clean. The possibilities are endless and it nobody cares what kind of car you drive or your last name. Some people are ducks and some are eagles. You can post your ideas and seek recruits to help you right on this website. Some people would rather complain than get off their duff and actually do someting. I drive a 1998 Ford Ranger and our church youth group has volunteered to pick up trash. But, it is easier to type on a keyboard with your clean fingernails than to get some dirt under those fingernails by actually doing something. God bless you and may 2011 be the year that you and your wife step up and be eagles."

yeah its true teams go through phases. but when you have the amount of talent nj has and they have only won four games there is a problem. look back all the way to these girls middle school years when they go undefeated or lose just one game. and now cant win what most would feel is impossible to lose.

Anonymous said...

i agree about the nj girls bball team seems like they have some talent but just never do any better even with a really poor schedule.

Anonymous said...

If you feel that you have the players and the coaching staff is not doing their job to improve the program, then you need to meet with your school board and let them know your feelings.

Sounds like Knox and North Judson have the same problem.

If you do not get rid of your problem, then it is passed on down to the next class coming up.

The coaching jobs need to be posted and interviewed not handed down or hand picked because of friendship with Athletic Director.

Let the school board vote on them.

Anonymous said...

I agree 110 percent on the comment dated Jan. 3 at 7:18 pm.

Parents and fans:
If we do not get involved and let the Knox school board know how we feel about the Boys basketball Coach and the problem.

I am afraid we will not have enough players next year for Varsity and Jr. Varsity Basketball.

We are stuck with our present coach since no one else will take him.

He has tried to get other jobs and gets turned down because of his background, that we keep hidden.

What a shame our kids and program have to suffer because of him.

Anonymous said...

To the post on January 3, 2011 7:18 PM. I wish it were that simple. The Knox school board DOES vote on the coaches there. Yet they still keep renewing boys coaches' contract knowing that he is running off basketball players. They are down to 12 players on the JV and Varsity teams because kids refuse to play. There have already been two games where the JV had to finish the game with 4 players on the floor. Before long they won't even have enough players for a team and then I guess the problem will be solved!

Anonymous said...

Yes the NJ girls are struggling. It's not that don't have the talent, we have some good 3 point shooters, but the coach tells them what to do and it's not shooting three pointers. Yes we tend to keep him, but it's time for him to go.

Anonymous said...

Yes at North Judson you have the young talent on your Girls basketball team.

We have the Senior talent at Knox, the problem we have is the coach plays his favorites, not the best players.

The girls have no desire to even finish the season. They are just there, sacrificing their time.

A lot of time for practicing and not winning. Would be different if we did not have the talent.

Our northern Starke County team OD wins year in and out, because they build a program there. It takes a coaching Staff to build a team and we do not have them at KNOX.

Time to clean house of Coaches.
Our school board just laughs it off. Very sad.

Anonymous said...

step up and be eagles."

Yah right! and they will soon be falling from the skys, dead, here also

Anonymous said...

The jan 4 10:43 am comment
hit the nail right on the head.
The OD team is winning with talent they have because the coaching staff has knowledge of the game and have played college basketball.
The North judson coaches have neither.
They Were handed their jobs by the AD.
WE HAVE A 6TH AND 7TH GRADE COACH THAT HAS ALL THE KNOWLEDGE AND PLAYING EXPERIENCE. HER TEAMS GO UNDEFEATED, THEN THEY GET IN HIGH SCHOOL, THEN THEY CAN'T WIN, GO FIGURE!!!
The school board or AD needs to try and get her to move up or ask the former coach to come back and straighten this mess out.
We need to do something immediately
before the program hits rock bottom.

To all the concerns of the lack of winning of both the NJSP and Knox girls basketball. It very easy to blame the coaches and the leadership of the school. I have been to many of both the NJsp and Knox games. What I see and many of the fans see is a group of young people who only want stardom. If the can't be the top scorer then the won't give 100% and forget defense. Please think back to the late 90s and early 2000s . Today the girls are more worried as to how they look then how they play . When a player playies the whole game and is not even sweeting tells the story. You can buy all the training available but if the person being trained for what ever reason does not use the tools its not the trainers fault . How many playeres go in early to run lift weights or work on the game? How many players can tell the coachs all the plays in the play book . Its just like school . All the students have books but why do some excell and other do not . Its called desire to be your best, and that is what we as fans are not seeing. When the game is over most players are laughing or on the cell phones, not concerned about their performance. We as fans do agree there needs to be changes but maybe just maybe its not all the coaches faults. When out daughter played we tracked both good and bad performance and discussed it when she got home .She would bring the game tape and watch it to see what she could have done to make the team better not just her . Its not all about me its about team she would always say .To all the parents and gramdparents we feel your payne also . Can any of you remember Harolds radio commentary ( there are bobies all over the floor), when was the last time you heard Harold on WKVI that descriptave on the radio. Its been a long time but it can and will happen again but the players need to step up and take charge of their desinity. Become the leader the role model the play maker the go to person don't expect someone to do it for them. There is nothing more inspireing then to watch a group of young people give all they have and be proud of it . There is still plenty of season left to turn the corner so lets everyone stay behind our furture leaders . Go Big Red Go Blue Jays Go Bobcats . See you at the game

What is our Mayor Chambers doing beside sitting behind a desk at City Hall ?
I think he needs to get out and go for a walk around the downtown businesses and see what messes there are outside of the business.
The trash can's on Main St in Knox are over flowing onto the sidewalks and also in front of the dollar general store around the tree it is disgusting with all the cigarettes laying in the landscape. I hate going into that store and being greeted by the employees standing out front blowing smoke then they throw them on the ground, I thought that was littering and we have a law against that ??? Why is it not enforced ?
I believe that when the Mayor Chambers first took office that his wife put together a program to keep downtown looking nice and plants in the planters . What happened to that ?

Anonymous said...

yes downtown should plant the flowers that bloom thru the snow

i also stopped shopping at dollar general because of the manager having smokers at front door, i am sure the place has a back door.

i hear it is closing and moving to mall

Anonymous said...

I totaly agree, when Dennis Estok was Mayor you would often see him walking around town checking things out, and the planters were always filled with flowers, the trees were mulched and the trash was emptied. You can start a program but you have to make sure things get done. I have seen the leader staff do the same thing with there cigarettes, why can't they use a cigarette butler? There is one thing I do not agree with is when Rick Chambers (is) in his office he is behind his desk, that is when he is there! I see him a lot at the bakery. Things will change this year, because it is a election year. Taxpayers!!

njsp had a girls basketball program that was envied even feared, coach didn't didn't put up with all the distractions and did not make excuses we miss that so much

A good coach knows how to rally the players to want to be better. No matter the sport. It is easy to rag on the coaches when you see talent sitting the bench but if the talent will not play the game the way the coach wants it played then the player belongs on the bench no matter how talented. I dont know any of your local athletes and I am not saying that this is the problem that you all are having but what I know is that if the parents rag too hard on the coach and the kids hear it then the kids will eventually lose faith in the coach therefore the player could end up on the bench. I dont care if I had a Michael jordan protege on my team if he didnt play the game the way I set out to play it he will sit the pine!

Maybe all these coaches need fired that is a good possibility but maybe the parents and students need to buy into the system the coach has and work hard to make it work. The latter would prove the naysayers right if the coach really does stink!

Anonymous said...

As far as the coaches.....I will say this.....There are very few players these days who are willing to do what it takes to win. Ask yourself: have I done everything in my power to get better? Do I try to make my teammates better? Do I shoot when I can? Run to stay in shape? Play in the off-season? As a parent, do I get my kid to where ever he/she needs to be? Support the team, never talking in front of my child about playing time (or lack of)? Did I help when asked, car pool, bring snacks, SHOW UP, expect my child to show respect to players, coaches and refs? Was I a good example for my kids?

There are some who are out for the team because their parents won't let them quit (even though they hate it), some who play because they want to get a letter (no matter how bad the team is) and some who are out there because of who is their kin. Then you have the few who are there because they could not live without it.....They are the ones who make the rest better, show them how to love the game, and will the team to compete.

I have seen very few kids who want to work hard, put in their time, and WIN. They might work hard some of the time, but not all of the time. Kids don't show up for practice, mess around when they are there and lose the focus of the group, don't learn the plays...I could go on forever.

As someone who has gained perspective in moving away for a while, Starke County has got to have the largest group of kids I have ever seen that expect to lose every year, and are unwilling to change the expectations. It is really quite shocking to me the vicious cycle we are in....we expect the coaches to work miracles with kids who don't want to do the work and put in the time, and parents who refuse to get their kids to practice, support the TEAM. We have become a society that makes excuses for everything, somebody else did it, not my fault.

Are you on the bench and don't like it? Prove yourself in practice. Show them you deserve to be out there. Somebody famous once said they didn't play the five best, but the best five. It may not be about athletic ability, but about leadership, attitude, how you play with others.

Some of the on-court behavior is absolutely shameful -- taunting players, trying to hurt the other team. I have actually seen a player yell at an opposing coach on more than one occasion, and this player was left in the game. Embarassing for the player, the coaching staff who did not address it, and their parents.

Back in the day, we didn't miss school, we didn't skip practice, we sure didn't talk back to the coaches or treat the opposing players/coaches disrespectfully. That meant you were gonna sit, and then you were gonna run. And your teammates were gonna run with you....because that's what teammates did. And if you caused the team to run, you apologized to the team and your coaches for letting them down.

You ever wonder why we don't have more kids playing in college? Because they are not willing to do what it takes to get there and stay there.

And I have no idea who the middle school coach is that was mentioned, but the transition from middle school to high school ball is drastic. The game is much faster, players more physical, and you could be playing with kids who have much more experience. That's not to say that this coach is not phenomenal...no idea....but there might be more at work here.

Dollar General moving to the Knox Mall , that may be where they belong that mall has a lot to desire they will fit right in with smokers from alco, but at least you dont have to walk through the smoke to get in the door nor do you see the butts laying all over out front.
Yes you are right wake up taxpayers and vote this year to help get a Mayor that will do his job and not set at the bakery. Now you mention that I see him there often too .
Knox could be a nice little town if it was just cleaned up a bit. And some buildings taken down instead of just boarding them up.
I wonder how the Mayor would like one of these buildings or homes that have been burnt out next to his house.

The comment about the girls not listening to the coach, and the coach is doing a good job. Our coach has the girls in tears after the games, but our girls are there to play. A coach can be a coach and be a lousy coach. I have seen that happen over the years. Our coach had some great girls coming back for their senior year and low and behold they didn't what happened there? Our coach picks favorites because he is friends with the family. So sad that it takes that way to make a team. I hope next year our school will wake up and do something with our coaching staff.

Here's an idea for the radio or the leader......do a story chronicling the ups and downs and downs and downs of the area and have the names of the major players in the community with each section....and not just highlight what makes us happy but be unbias (i know its hard for these two bussinesses). Just an idea

January 5th, 9am. I could not agree with you anymore, these lazy kids, and parents are what ruined our programs, not the coaches reputation. I played for the coach with the worst reputation around, and had no problem winning. We were dedicated, loved the sport, and our parents made sure (even when it wasnt convienient) that we were at every single event that was put on by the program. I have a child that was in the saturday morning basketball league, pitiful, there was not one of the players there, boy or girl. When I played that was the highlight of our weekend, teaching those little kids how to play a sport that I loved playing, and now watching. These coaches have a tough job trying to make these kids love the sport, which is impossible when the parents sit at home on the WKVI blogs and badmouth everything that goes on in town, ever heard "the apple doesnt fall far from the tree" this negativity is very contagious. Go to a high school game in any of the 3 schools in our county and report back at how much positive support there is for the kids, win or lose, there will be very few reports back, because the parents and town citizens are all just negative, no matter where they go.

We have been very disappointed in the direction of NJSP girls basketball.Good example of what is happening just look at the number of girls that play basketball it is far fewer than in the past why?Coach K. Brown built the program on mutual respect, leadership, and conduct on and off the court. He was not influenced by friends and outside sources telling him how to coach and what players should be playing. He did it the right way and his players respected him.
PLEASE WHERE ARE YOU COACH K BROWN WE NEED YOU!

The njsp boy bball program is nothing but positive, they have coach that works his tail off and he gets results, and his players follow his positive lead. We are not the cubs we don't have to wait til next year! Bluejay girls BBall used to be great, it can be again.

Anonymous said...

talking about basketball in starke county some need to go and watch OD and the one man show. When you have the coaches son doing it all or so called trying. There is no team work except get the ball to the Richie kid and let him go. He is averaging 42 pts a game and then next scorer is avg.8 a game. They need a new coach also

Anonymous said...

So I think someone with some power from the city of knox needs to take a visit to taco bell and see all the pot heads that are there 24-7. Also the park. There are lots of kids who go there and do drugs at the skate park and the basketball court. Even the skate shop downtown.

Anonymous said...

With the start of the New Year and the talk of all the new jobs coming to Indiana does that mean that THIS is the Year for the SYSCO Plant to finally arrive?

Anonymous said...

I agree that most of the young people of today are a tad lazy. As far as the basketball players, it is hard to find one that really wants to put forth the effort. They may be talented, but don't want to be disciplined enough to utilize that talent. It isn't fair to blame it all on the coaches, when it is up to the players also. It takes both to have a successful team. Parents make it too easy on the kids by letting them have the say on almost everything they do. Face facts, the adult is the boss and they need to let the kids know this. There is not enough respect taught to young people today.

Anonymous said...

Kids follow coaches lead, bales team works hard, hustles and plays with emotion. Hamptons well not so much.

Anonymous said...

There is no team in basketball anymore. Kids dont know thier roles. Everyone cant be the scoring leader. What happened to the the blue collar guys? Rebounding, defense, taking a charge? There is so much jealousy among parents and the kids who put in the time in the spring and summer months and dont just pick up a basketball when the season starts.

Anonymous said...

To all of those complaining about lack of support for the basketball teams,
Please do not tell me that your sport is not supported. In the Knox School System there are two sports that are recognized and they are football and basketball. The only times that any other sport is mentioned is when the team or individual does exceptional and then the school will take credit and acknowledge them. Try participating in a sport that the only support you get is what you, your teammates and your coach give.
Sincerely,
the cross country, golf, tennis, volleyball, swimming, wrestling and track teams.

Sysco will never be and all that talk about smoking in front of the dollar store and alco, what about the city cops smoking in the police cars??????? I know I have seen two different cops doing it!

Anonymous said...

I have read all the comments listened to the buzz in the stands and there are some facts that are just wrong. People want to act like the parents dont put forth effort with their kids, I know alot of the families represented on the basketball team .Most of these kids have been playing in leagues, camps, or even just their back yards way before alot of kids can say the word basketball. Its because their love for the game. Not because of the parents thats unfair to say. The coaches also cant just be blamed but they are to easily influenced by the crowd. Its very obvious on the court play the players for their talent not just how much pressure they might feel to get the minutes in. I believe its just time for a change. Then let the records speak for themselves.

Anonymous said...

Here's the thing for the people saying the kids are lazy and such. Yeah alot are AND always have been which is why Knox has more than not came out at the bottom of the pack in "team" sports. BUT why go and put out 100% day in and day out just to be pushed aside because there's another kid that does your job yet only at half the dedication but mom or dad is a prominant figure in town or was the so called "star" back in the day. Compair football and basketball to say track or wrestling or cross county and other more individual sports where we are more dominant. We loose too much talent to the why even try cuz I'm not gonna get to play "attitude" which sadly is more a reality than attitude. So i say shame on the school boards and athletic directors for continuing to let this happen .

Ok, for all you people complaining about the flower pots, seriously, its 20 degrees out. If you don't like the looks of them then get off the computer and go find some flowers that will grow in the dead of the winter! Is there a law about smoking outside the stores? Instead of complaining about the mayor and him not guarding Dollar General why don't you go in and explain your concerns to the manager. Lastly, for all of you who have seen the mayor at the donut shop, do you eat breakfast? I am pretty sure the mayor is allowed to also!!

Coach bales team is undefeated playing mainly 6 players, girls team is playin 8 3 of which are not ready and are 4-9 hmmm.

Anonymous said...

Judson has to play all the girls because the coach does not have them prepared to play a complete game.

The girls are good enough to play 4 quarters, just not taught to do so.

Again it all starts with the Coaches.

That is where we need to make changes.

What has happened to the Knox High School cheerleaders? They do the same cheers over and over, they dont do their dances anymore, their hair is a mess...half of them dont wear the ribbons that match, they are boring to watch...they dont do the neat things in the air anymore...they just throw up the little girls and they dont even smile. The girls that are older and have been in it can do neat things, but now they just blend in to the rest of the team...they aren't even in the front where all the experienced girls should be. Why are the underclassmen in the front and doing the things in the air for the varsity games? I see the upperclassmen get to do it sometimes...but not enough, it should be upperclassmen all the time for varsity games. Talent is being wasted. What happened to the coach? The last coach knew how to use the girls to their best potential..and the cheerleaders were FUN to watch! I hear they aren't doing their dance for the home games...BUMMER!
The team has the upperclassmen from last year that were in the front and did the things up in the air..they were good...why not put them back in for a good show? And..what's up with the girls basketball team...I see the upperclassmen sitting the bench...I thought this was going to be a winning year with the talent on that team. I see who I thought was going to be the MVP of the team just sitting the bench half the game. The coaches must have personal issues with these girls and use their power to keep them out of the limelight that they deserve after all the years they have put into these sports. What a shame! Shame on you coaches for ruining the last years of these girls school sports by shoving them in the back and not letting them shine. If you think people don't notice...you are wrong..and the opinions being formed of you are well deserved!

Anonymous said...

Ok, I am not saying ALL kids are lazy, but a big percentage of them ARE!! And,no,not all parents are to blame. I am sure that there are a lot of parents that really get involved in their children's activities. BUT, I have attended basketball games for about 20 years, and I have seen the changes in both players and their parents. And sometimes players do recieve special attention because of who their parents are. I have also noticed the lack of dedication that used to be there. I don't think you can put the blame solely on parents, coaches, or players. I for one think there is too much attention paid to sports, when education should be the main focus of school. I am done commentiing on the basketball topic. Enough already.

Anonymous said...

ok for something POSITIVE

i am positive that people here complain too much.

Anonymous said...

I am not a coach, but I know enough about sports to know that what happens in a sport is not just game night. How hard a kid hustles in practice, how they represent themselves off the court/field, their attitude, all that matters as well.

Anonymous said...

I believe everyone knows plants and flowers do not grow in the winter. Last spring there was not any flowers planted in the planters, nor was there any mulch around the trees. In the past the downtown was always cleaned and ready for the Memorial Day ceremonies. There is not a law against smoking out side, but there is a law against littering. Rick Chambers job as Mayor, is to make sure the city is kept cleaned.City hall opens at 8:00 a.m. not 9:00 or 9:30 a.m.! I am a taxpayer, and I do keep my property clean.

If you want positive come watch a bluejay boys basketball game coach has them playing so unselfish its just great. It is hard to be positive about what coach hampton is doing and he has no staff just the same family members collecting a check.

Anonymous said...

Well to whom ever is so ignorant ! I dont believe the person was saying the planters should be filled with flowers now , just that they were very pretty a few year s ago when they were taken care of and then they have turned to crap. As far as an officer smoking in a car he is hurting no one but himself and not someone walking into a store.
I do think that they have the right to smoke but not out front the establishments use the back doors to do this at that no one but them are out there. I am sure that other places in the city have employees that smoke but they keep away from the customers.
And it would do no good to tell the manager of Dollar Gen. as she is one of the smokers.
And yes the mayor has a right to eat breakfast but not just let the community go down hill while he does this.
Remember this is an election year

all I read on here is complaning. you dont like whats going on do something about it. My god grow up people.

I can't believe all the people on here wanting to blame the coaches for the team's losing season. The coach isn't on the floor missing free throws during the game. Nor is the coach the one on the floor traveling or throwing bad passes. This is all stuff these kids should know by the varsity level and not have to be taught every year. If the kids don't want to put in the time and make themselves better don't blame the coaches.

The coaches have a hard enough time doing their job without having to put up with the pressures of parents/grandparents. If you don't like what is being done....APPLY for the job. The school had openings posted this past year. Doubt any on you applied.

As for the kids who play in other leagues that is so they can get seen by college coaches. Doubt any of them go on and play past high school. Maybe parents/grandparents should let the kid play and stop being so involved. If the kid wants to play then he/she will put in the effort. If a kid is playing because of their last name-well nothing you can do about that. That is life and it happens everywhere, not just Starke County.

The NJSP boys team has the same problems the girls do, just not so much complaing because they are winning. Two years ago, out of 12 players on Bales' team-10 sets of parents were contacting the coach in some way to complain about their kid's playing time. His team is no different then the girls other than their record.

As far as the NJSP varsity girls very few of them are ready. If you watch the team with an unbiased eye you will see that the so called stars can't rebound, shoot a free throw or make a good pass.

I say Hampton scraps the varsity team and go with his jv team. If you're gonna lose might as well do it with sophmores/freshman that aren't on the varsity.

The reason the judson girls dont get better year after year, has got todo with coaching. Coach browns teams won every year at that school he didnt have family night he had practice. Now we hire the same family that is represented in every job at the school plus the head coach is just too lazy himself, you cant expect the girls to be any different. Coach BROWN looks that much better every day. We really miss him.

Anonymous said...

lol....well, all the fair weather fans on here. you all complain about the coaches when a team isn't doing well.
judson fans...didn't see any complaining when coach hampton took a team to state. ????
& ur boys coach, the talent is there on his teams, but as far as him "coaching", he is out coached every time by no-talent teams. His time will come when the talent isn't there & then we'll hear your complaints about he's not doing his job either.
knox boys bball...same thing, everyone loved him when there was a winning season & they were winning regionals & going to semi-state. now, ur ready to hang him up. if he needs to go, then he needs to go b/c of what he does off the court, not b/c of his coaching ability.
knox girls bball...wow is all i have to say. first time i laid eyes on them, i thought what a joke to the girls basketball program.
knox cheerleading...can't believe anyone would even complain about the newer coach compared to what they did have. Smiles?? the old coach nor her daughters EVER smiled.
people do need to realize that it's different now then it was 20-25 yrs ago. any sport is now a year round sport instead of just conditioning & the season. kids are burnt out by time they get to varsity sports. my past experience with a varsity team is i could not believe the attitudes, laziness, & lack of heart they have for the game they are playing. & then there is always the fine line of what coaches can & can not do nowadays b/c of parents---don't yell at my kid, ur not playing my kid where they should be or enough, my kid can do ...blah,blah, blah.....
then, when it comes down to it, these are usually the parents that aren't there to support their child every chance they get b/c they have a different opinion of the coach. all u are teaching ur child is that it's ok to disrespect their coach.
& if anyone can do better, i see coaching positions posted all the time on the websites,,,so have at it:)

I say janna just needs to give up no one likes her. The girls don't have fun anymore, they do do the same stupid cheers all the time. She has no idea how to coach tammy plz come back the girls need you. The captain needs to give up too. I mean come on, to be a captain you should have to be able to jump more than 3 inches off the ground, and not stand around.

I feel so sorry for the Knox cheerleaders, they have downgraded so much it must be hard for the upperclassmen, coming from an amazing coach to the ones they have now. What is up with no halftime routine so many people love to watch that. Why are the talented girls pushed to the back and the underclassmen in front they need a few years under there belt before they deserve that front or top spot. It looks so bad when there are bigger girls lifting the smallest girls, when there are more experienced upperclassmen that can do the same thing but better, There is a reason they have JV, and Varsity. JV should be cheering and flying for the JV game, and Varstiy should do it for the Varstiy game like they did in the past. There needs to be a new captain if you are to watch the girls you would never guess she was the captain, I had to ask around to find out who the captain even was in the beginning, and its not who i would of thought it would have been. I see other girls doing her job and then getting yelled at for it by her.

The last coach Tammy Manns needs to return so we have something good to watch. She had more knowledge and was way more qualified for the job, she knew where to place girls so they would shine. She challenged the girls so they would excel. The girls she had on varsity deserved it, the underclassmen they have on varsity now dont need to be on it. The old coach might of been hard on the girls but look now obviously they needed it. The girls were cleaner and flashier, stunts and dances were way better in the past years with the old coach.
They need to get the new coaches out and the old one back in!

It to students job to do there best even if the sport is year round they know that before they join the team, and if the kids are not doing there job its the coaches job to push them!

My daughter is a Senior on the Knox team. She has played Varsity since her freshman year scoring over 500 points starting for the past two years. Led in Assists, Rebounds, and every other stat to be had. Has broken records not only in basketball, but every team she has played for at Knox and works hard. She has played since she was in second grade on leagues during summer. This year she is sitting the bench most of the game and not starting, and it is NOT for lack of effort, trying, or talent, he expects her to show leadership while sitting the bench. And our record shows it. Yes, our coach MIGHT be able to beat the mediocre teams with her on the bench...but GOODLUCK beating a good team and keeping her there. When you know what good basketball is, bad basketball and poor judgement is easily recognized.

so, if your wonderful previous coach, Tammy Manns, is so much better, then why isn't she still coaching???!!!! oh,,,,that's right b/c no one wanted her to & she was asked to resign!!!! & cheerleading knowledge----she was never even a cheerleader,,just a wannabe!!!!

Anonymous said...

Tammy is not there because of ignorant people, it shows that she was a way better coach the girls dont do anything anymore. So many people dont even know the story behind Tammy leaving, and they dont need to. You can see the downgrade now! They have a coach who was a cheerleader and had experience and look they are not doing so hot. Tammy didnt have to cheer to know what she was doing. She coached for many years and had many first places! So many of her teams were talented and made their way to the top! Everyone has flaws, no one is perfect! She pushed the girls to do their best and sometimes that means you have to be hard on them! Tammy was a dedicated coach and put her whole life into cheerleading even after her daughters left. It meant more to her than it does the coach now, if your not going to put the time and effort into being a coach then Jana shouldnt be one!!!! or maybe she felt like Tammy was better than her when she was her asst. and now thinks she is but she really isn't! NEWS FLASH Tammy was way better and no one will ever be as good as her!!!! and if you think they will you dont really know cheerleading!!

A real coach doesnt make excuses they develop the talent they have and play as team. Sorry to say that coach hampton just is unable to do that. K.shepherd and K. cox were the real reason nj went to the state title game everyone knows that all our girls will tell you that, since then they have went down hill without them.

So far for January, there are 67 posts to this blog. At least 47 of them are bickering related to school sports. I have a great solution. If sports are not helping anyone, maybe we should eliminate them and put some focus on academics where it should be!!!

Get over it, people. Not one of these kids is going on to be a professional athlete. Maybe if we teach them something they can use in their future, we would have a better educated group of young people to lead our country in the future. Instead, it seems that we have children who have parents that make excuses for them and demonstrate how to not get along with others...Let's go back to reading, writing and arithmetic.

Fire all of the coaches and take all of the money that is being spent on athletics and put it into academics where it should be. Oh yeah, and then maybe the coaches would be focused on teaching the subjects they are hired to teach rather than leaving class to talk sports with members of their teams.

I'm proud opf our sports, the students, the sacrifices of the coaches & parents, & I believe it gives those that assert themselves important lesson in life that aren't gained in the classroom. It is also a privelidge, & thankful our communities have continue to finance them, but also true, they don't take precedence over education. But each has their place, & you can't have 1 without the other. I support all our local athletes on their efforts on the court & in the classroom. And if this is the highlight of the bickering...then our lives must be pretty good. Thank you Lord

Not everyone is a gifted student!! education is not everything. Some kids need sports to pull them to do better in school!! and there are many pro athlete started out as high school athletes so they could very well become pro!! go read a book and stay off the web if your so for education!!

I attended Knox high school and I didnt play the sports I loved because of what I saw as "family politics" I now have so many regrets because I didnt try. was it the politics fault or mine? does it matter now? would it have mattered then? Could I have been a college athlete? A lot of questions but all I can do is move forward now. My children will be playing in school sports in a few years and again I see some of the politics in the system. So what do I do..... I get involved! I help the coaches I try to coach the young teams. I support the programs in place. My parents Idea of support was buying the shoes I needed and taking me to practice when I did play. I understand alot more now than I did then. Maybe that is the issue here our parents need to get involved rather than tear down the programs. We have good people in our schools. Maybe the most skilled player on the team doesnt want to play the game the way the coach wants it played? Until the parents tell the player to do as the coach says the player should sit the bench. As for the Knox boys coach... How does he still have a coaching job? Yes I agree our athletic directors need to get off their duffs and make the hard decisions instead of coasting by. Dont blame the coaches for a losing tradition. That goes on the athletic director.
Some of these kids may get scholarships to D1 or D2 colleges. But if they get cheated out of it by the program in place then they lose that opportunity. Not the opportunity for continuing sports but for continuing education. So in conclusion. Parents get involved, Athletic directors set goals for the coaches and if they cannot meet them then it is time to move on. Make the tough decisions, and students, buy into your program the coaches dont want to lose either!! Good luck the rest of the season to all starke county teams!!!

Its funny how the cheerleaders parents & cheerleaders that are upset are the SAME cheerleaders that were freshman, sophomoes & juniors who were on varsity & flying stunts before seniors. But now that there seniors they are upset? How do you think seniors felt before? The same way you do now!

In the past, the senior cheerleaders always had the spot for flying and they were always in the front before the sophomores and freshmen...unless they were not able to do a difficult stunt and a junior, or lower classmen could do it...other than that, a freshman or sophomore never took the place of a junior or senior. The upperclassmen waited their turn and now they get to watch the younger girls...the reason? They need experience. Why not get the experience during the JV games? JV has the same amount of games to be in the front and fly stunts...maybe the underclassmen are just alot better than the juniors and seniors...maybe the freshman and sophomores should be in the front and flying the stunts for the whole varsity game. The juniors and seniors can do more than one thing..they are adjustable in different spots...the freshman and sophomores can pretty much only do one thing each. So...if you only know how to fly...you will always get to fly! Forget the seniors...they will be gone soon anyway...and the juniors...they will be outta here soon too. Lets make it all about the sophomores and freshmen!

Greetings from Indianapolis. I stop by here occasionally just to see what's up up there.

It appears that a lot of people up there have nothing better to do than to complain and bring down others.

If you have a legitimate complaint, then there are proper channels you can go through to get the word(s) to those who can do something about the problem(s).

Posting on a discussion board where everyone, including myself, is going by "anonymous" does nothing to correct the problems.

So, I suggest you get off your duffs and leave the keyboard and try to correct the problems you complain about instead of just complaining without doing anything to correct the problems.

Contact your school boards if the basketball team coaches are so darned bad!!

Contact the Mayor's office to lodge your complaints on trash being thrown about!!

Don't just sit there like a bump on a log and expect somebody else to do it for you!!

I don't really have a "dog in this fight", but can see that nothing will change as long as all that is done is a lot of b****ing about it.

I'll sign off as Angry Indy Granny.

It seems to me that we have bigger problems that need discussed, between the economy, with so many struggling to make ends meet, so many children who are in broken homes, with little to no guidance, that are left unattended or sent out to the street so the parent/guardian can get drunk, do drugs, sleep around, or molest the sibling left behind. Wake up people! We need values! We need compassion! We need to stop turning away when we hear someone doing something that isn't right or who is calling out for help and be God fearingly motivated! Let's go people! We need to seek God before it's too late and bring up our children with a sense of self worth! Show your kids you care! Spend time with them! Be interested in their lives! Sports are ok but when it's your life you get a big wakeup call when you graduate and there is nothing left but a job at McDonald's or a factory! We live in a good community, but we could make it a great community with just a little effort!

IF a freshmen and sophomore cheerleader can only do one spot like fly then they need to learn how to do others that would be why they are on JV (think about it) how do you think the juniors and seniors know how to do all spots they learned..and screw the people who think its all about the underclassmen because its the seniors last year they should be living it up the underclassmen get to come back seniors dont!! and if it was not for the upperclassmen then the so call amazing underclassmen couldnt do a thing. When the seniors and Juniors were underclassmen they had to deal with doing JV, so the JV girls and there parents now need to suck it up and deal and if you cant do more then one thing just get out of the program cuz we dont want you! They just make it harder on the ones who know what they are doing! Its because of all you people who think upperclassmen shold bow down to the underclassmen that they cant do harder level stuff!! All i have to say is suck it up and i hope when the underclassmen now are seniors that the same thing happens to them......o and just so you know your precious underclassmen cant do anything without the upperclassmen. Wonder what would happen if the seniors and juniors all quit o i know there wouldnt be any cheerleader left only like what 6 girls and they are the ones who cant do anything..you all will see when the seniors graduate. The cheer program will suck even more!! after the juniors now graduate there shouldn't even be cheerleaders for Knox because they will be so pathetic!!

Indy granny... Appreciate your comments but you live in a different community and have little idea of the small town issues the city has some of the same but not really. there are alot of people who do what they can in the community and probably alot of them get on here as well. but sometimes you need a forum like this to vent on and get the word out. What should this be used for other than that? It does make for great discussion and yes there are a few that get on here and are just jerks but the most really feel strongly about an issue. I know I have had my mind changed more than once from a series of comments on here. Most people I am sure feel better after posting.

The athletic teams are the main inexpensive entertainment here other than going to the drive in or just enjoying nature. So people being passionate about it is a good thing. As I said earlier though it all falls on the athletic director to lay out goals and see that progress is being made to achieve them. These teams are motivation for the kids as well as well as a way for some to make it to college or a better college than what they would be able to afford. That is why the schools should take them seriously as well as academics. No doubt academics first but the athletics, band, cheer, and theatre should be a very close second!

With everything going on, why is it people seem to have nothing better than basketball to talk about? There aren't enough jobs, meth problems, people who don't care about paying child support, and a list of other things. My wife's ex recently had his support lowered to "0" because he is in jail for forging perscriptions. Big deal, add it to his back support (not that the low life will ever pay it.Wake up people and discuss important topics.

I agree...the seniors cheerleaders are all pretty good..they stand out and could be an awesome team..just by themselves. Even though they are put in the back of the cheers sometimes and have to watch the underclassmen fly over them, they still are seen through the ones in the front that have a hard time keeping up, rememebering the cheer, or jumping. I would like to see the talent that I have seen in years past...and the seniors and juniors on the team now are all part of that talent. Maybe when everything settles down, the upper classmen will be able to teach the underclassmen some things so when they are juniors and seniors they will be able to keep the cheer program going. Whenever a new coach takes over...its not an easy transition...and it is sad that the seniors this year are getting lost in the shuffle. The senior cheerleaders have always been a special part of the team, and all the rest of the cheerleaders have always stepped aside for the seniors every year...making them top priority. The cheerleaders always look forward to being a senior and having that special recognition...and there is nothing wrong with that....that is how it is with every sport...the seniors all are a special part of the team..they are respected for their experience. The cheerleaders need to pull together and make this a great year despite all the negativity.

You people that are complaining about the Dollar General Employees smoking in front of the store, If you ever worked retail you would smoke to. They have to deal with people complaining about stuff all day long. If you knew anything about the company, you would know that the back door is always locked unless they have a truck or taking out the trash, it is against store policy. The manager has nothing to do with the mulch around the tree. The last I new one of the employees put knew mulch in there not the city. The employees clean up other peoples messes in front of the store. Its not the employees that litter, it is the customers. Just face the facts People are slobs.....

First off, if you are gonna talk badly about someone in print you should spell their name correctly. It's JANA!!! Next, I think the person or persons behind all of this just may be the ones who thought they should be the cheerleading coach(es) and they got passed over. Maybe instead of undermining Jana and getting the cheerleaders to argue amongst themselves, thus in turn making everyones cheer experience a bad one you should swallow your pride and be helpful to the new coach as she tries to restructure her squad and renew spirit in them after what seems to have been a rough time for them after Tammy left. Also, I think some parents need to relize they are out of high school and you can't turn back time. You are getting caught up in your teenage daughters drama and making it your own. Yes, defend your child if they are really being treated unfairly but , don't go running in ready for war when she comes home and says, " mommy, it's just not fair I never get to be on top of the pyramid.". As far as the comment about it looking bad the bigger girls always lifting the smaller ones, seriously......ummmm.....ok. Some girls are made to base and some are made to fly, just a fact of life. We can't all be the prom queen either.

I love basketball, always have, always will, and I think it is really sad that Knox did not even have enough players go out for the sport to make a Varsity, Jv & Freshman team... with a school the size of Knox, the coaches should have to make cuts. I go to alot of games , for all ages, and what I dont see is a basketball program. Not every child has the means to join an AAU team, or play at the courts in Valpo, nor do they have transportation. We have 4 gyms at Knox, why isnt there more programs that teach fundamentals, basketball basics, etc? Most of the 6th, 7th & 8th grade boys have never even seen the Varsity coach. I know Varsity Coaches for other sports teams that work with the coaches of underclassman, they tell or show them what they expect, and how to do it, so that the kids are playing and learning what they need to know BEFORE they get to high school.. Sports is not everything, not even close, but alot of kids do enjoy playing, and it is sad to watch them fail time and time again. I dont care about the score or a winning record,I care about these kids. We all know how cruel people can be, it must be hard to hear all the comments that are made by, parents, coaches, ref's, school mates etc..... I feel sorry for the kids that are trying, that do show up for practice, that do give 100%. I am not sure what will make it better, but something needs to change.

No basketball team can win with 5 players!!! The only problem the Lady Jays have is there is way too much ME ball on the team. Too many girls are only concerned about themselves and do not play as a team. I think Coach Hampton is getting them to play better as a team but they have allot more work to do. One girl is not going to make them a successful team. It takes a team. I do not believe this is all the Coaches fault. I agree there is allot of turnovers on this team and that really hurts allot. Everyone needs to pull together and quit being so negative to the coaches and the players.

Maybe if the senior cheerleaders had better attitudes then they would get the spots they wanted. They should stop acting like they know it all & listen to the coach instead of trying to tell her how to do her job. They hated the last coach but now that she is gone she is the greatest??

What's up with Nancy and the time zone again? It's not a state problem, it a federal problem. I remember the federal dot making the ruling not the state. The state requested daylight savings time and the feds split the timezone. Take to Obama.

Anonymous said...

First off-- It was NOT Coach Brown's team that made it to the State Finals in 2005, it was John Hampton's Team. Brown left those girls high and dry... Why you ask? Because of Parents like you all! He couldn't handle parents coming at him all of the time, so what makes you think that he would want to come back to this team now? I would speechless if that were to happen.

I went to a few of the girls games this year & it is no surprise why these girls have the record that they do. You do not hear faithful fans in the stands, rooting for their daughters, granddaughters, sisters, friends... instead you hear nothing but negativity NOT only towards the coach, but also towards the girls! "We'll never go anywhere with this coach!" "This coach doesn't not know anything about basketball and how the game should be playing." "She sucks!" "She can't get a rebound!" "She shoots waaayy too much!" "She cannot handle the ball!" "She doesn't pass the ball to the right player!" The biggest shocker --"My daughter sucks!" & My personal favorite "The coach has taken everything away from these girls!"

These are teenage girls we are talking about-- IF YOU SAY SOMETHING TOO MUCH THEY MAY ACTUALLY BELIEVE IT!! & that is a HUGE problem in NJ. The parents have ZERO respect for Coach Hampton, thus the girls have ZERO respect for Coach Hampton. & the girls go home only to hear about how horrible their coach is & how horrible the other girls on her team are...

& Now-- (With an exeption of a select few-- and by few, I mean 1 or 2 girls) We have a team of girls who never take the blame for themselves and worry about nothing but their own statistics. They always have someone else to blame for their own mistakes because their parents have implemented this way of thinking into their brains.

AND to the Parents who wanted to boycott the games in hopes to get the coach fired-- SHAME ON YOU. Those are your daughters. You should be supporting them every single day!

I do not believe that Coach Hampton has taken anything away from these girls, their parents have with all of this negativity.

I have a lot of respect for Coach Hampton and his family. I wish them the best of luck in dealing with all of these horrid parents.

To JAN 11, 3:33...I'd be ashamed myself to go & hear the "fans" talking like that. And I bet 99% of them were NEVER successful in any sport. They don't know the work these kids put in just to play these games, win or lose. It takes alot of character to lose & still remain trustful, faithful & hopeful in each other....& that makes me even more proud to see our youth stand up in adversity. Lest we forget the OD Bobcats 5 or 6 yrs ago. Couldn't win a game...for years. And they persevered..& believed..& turned into 1 of the greatest success stories ever. Judson folks are a bit spoiled. They've won Championships, been to multiple Final 4's, so obviously their character is low when success is not attained. But I say..You better be proud, cause I know those girls are giving it their all. Being a Knox LIFER..I've dreamed of seeing a State Championship sign for a major sport(still very proud of the band & spell bowl), while entering into town, AND I HAVE FULL FAITH THAT IT'LL HAPPEN. But until then, I'll support them..win or lose..& contribute everything positive I can. So yes, us Redskins are still proud to see NJ or OD succeed, but we are looking forward to our day in the sun. If failing teams need some advice...I'd say the 1st step is to go & watch "FACING THE GIANTS", as a TEAM, With your COACHES, & With your PARENTS at home. That's where success begins. Remember parents, we're teaching character & integrity as well, & it starts with US.

I think that the Dollar General is one of the nicer stores to go into to shop the store is always clean and you can find what you need. The mulch that was put down in front of the store was put down by a employee who takes pride in where they work. So to the rude people, before you bad mouth people at that store or any other store think about the people who work there and what they do. @the person who left a comment about the time zone (on 11/11 @ 2:45) ~ I have heard nothing about that, is Nancy bringing THAT up again? And, you are correct...it was the DOT (or Department of Transportation) that made the decision on which time zones to put us in...it was NOT up to the Governor...all he did at the time, was to say something needed to be done, and he was right. Something DID need to be done, but it was not his decision. Maybe if it IS brought to the table again, our county would raise its voice and be heard about which time zone they want to be in, instead of sitting back and letting the DOT decide. Thanks for bringing up the subject.
On another note, there sure are a lot unhappy people here...maybe you should move to a sunny, warm climate...might help brighten your dispositions. Hard to read and re-read the same tired whining about cheerleaders and the weather...which is why I get on here and read only about once every month or two. You people are hard to take.

If someone has an issue they want to talk about then they can. Yes some really get whiney but you will have that. Posting to tell people that they are idiots or whiners or that you are embarrased by the discussion is just silly. The statements you see here would relativley be in any other community as well. It is life people. and this gives people an anonymous way to express themselves so to not be scrutinized in public. Sometimes people realize that they may have been off base on their comments as we have seen in the past. Other times comments gain lots of support.

This is a discussion board if you dont like what someone is saying it is simple.... Skip their comment!

This lady is actually far worse....& I can't believe how the Media has picked this story up...& I haven't heard 1 good word about the kind hearted person whom she killed. Hey Jan.11th 3:44 p.m.The first post is what we call sarcasm(look it up).The person who wrote it is more than likely having a good laugh at your expense, not just for taking it seriously, but for going so far as to post a comment about it. So if they're a moron, then what do you call someone who fell for a joke and is being laughed at by said moron.

Was wondering if anyone lost a young female dog, black lab mix. She has 3 white paws, white on her chest, and her tail is tipped in white like a paintbrush. I'm taking her to the Starke Co. Humane society tomorrow ( Jan 13). She was found close to NJSP school

why is it that so many of the comments on here are negative. why do people feel the need to say bad things about our town and people in our little town. Some of the comments on here could be said a whole lot nicer. Just think hoe it would make people feel when they read something good about where they work and live. There are so bad comments about the stores here and people smoking in front of them. How about the next time that bothers you try to say it like this boy I wish that store had a smoking section for there employes to smoke in and make a comment on how nice it is to have the store here in this town. Thank you and have a nice day!!!! P.S thank you to the people who work here in this town you make it what it is THANKS!!!

Leave the cheerleaders alone...they have a coach that is respectable which is what I look at more than anything...my daughter is on the team and I want the coach to be someone that she can respect. Jana is a good role model for my daughter. Jana may not do things the way Tammy did, but the girls will adapt, and they need to learn that they will work with different kinds of people throughout their lives. Although the cheer squad has endured alot of negativity and change this year, I try to find the good in it all...and if nothing else, my daughter will learn that she needs to adapt to different situations through her life. I love the girls on the cheer squad...they are all fantastic..and I'm sure Jana appreciates each one of them also. Please leave our cheerleaders and their coach alone. Unless you are part of our program, you have no right to your awful opinion, and if you are part of our cheer program, shame on you.

I for one and disgusted by the Lisa Owens story. How can someone that murdered her husband, a man she supposedly loved, then leave his dead body in the shower for several days, only to then claim abuse once her secret is revealed, only serve 1/4 of her sentence and then be glorified for "rehabilitating" herself and getting several college degrees? Why are the most violent offenders in society being slapped on the hand? I for one do not want Lisa Owens as my neighbor. If she would kill a great guy like Jeff, what will she do to a perfect stranger? Our justice system is failing! Where is the justice that Jeff and his family deserve?

Tsmall said...

I've checked out the discussion board for the first time after listening WKVI stating alot of feed back in regards to my cousin's murderer but as I read all the negative comments about our community I'm saddened by all the little things that positive energy is wasted on. Hey in the spring, organize a group and volunteer your time and plant flowers and oh yes, I've seen the cigarette butts etc outside the Dollar store and the manager/owner should be out there cleaning up the mess just as they all have to or should shovel the sidewalks. Be proud of your business. As far as the cheerleaders, please I've been through all the chaos as my child cheered. Shame on everyone involved in that. If you don't like it, don't let your child try out. The coach is in charge NOT you as the parents. It's a privilige Don't live in the past. Work with the present!

I feel more importantly that we have a murderer being released as early as May. WHY??? She is just that a MURDERER! Our family was never asked nor questioned in regards to Lisa Amber Owens on the upcoming series on the "OWN" Oprah Winfrey network. The truth was not told. I miss my cousin as so many of his friends and family. Now what is really more important in this community???

I think the whole Knox school system needs updating. First off we dont need to be bickering about sports and cheerleaders we do need to worry about the education our students are not getting while attending .
We need more caring teachers and other staff that wants students to learn instead of push them to the side when help is needed. They are not living up to the "NO STUDENT LEFT BEHIND " Well on second thought they are by not teaching them what they need to know and passing them on to the next grade that is only thing I see they do with the not leaving anyone behind. It is not help them learn it is pass them on to the next teacher and grade maybe he/she will do better at teaching them.s
Everytime you say my student needs help it is well we can have a tutor for them not the teacher will help. They have teachers teaching subjects that they are not even trained in. Expecting our students to know how to read the book that is not very self explanatory and know how to do it from there.
Wake up parents it is not all about sports it is about our future and our children spending 12 years getting out and not knowing what they need to continue in the real world.
And as far as the cheerleaders they need a lot of growing up and learn to respect there elders . Maybe if they would have done this they still would have been doing a great job with Tammy , but you can only run over someone so many times before they give up. To many cheerleaders today are just plain spoiled and want it to be only there way and dont care about others feelings. What are they going to do when they are faced with reality in the working world as cheer is not a profession for none of them they are not that good anyone can jump around an yell. Since Tammy has left that is all you see when watching them no new stunts ,no new cheers . Is it maybe because they dont want to listen to the new coach either as I have heard she is a very good one with a reputable name in the community. So maybe all this is not the coach it is the girls and the parents.

Why did lisa owens kill her husband? before people get up in arms about her being released, they need to hear both sides of the story and above all else, BE IMPARTIAL! what if she was being abused? what if he tried to kill her? Walk a mile in her shoes before you judge her. Let he who is with out sin cast the first stone. besides, just because some one kills once doesnt make them a "cold blooded killer" What about soldiers? they are ordered to kill just because the other side doesn't agree with our political views. thats any army, not just USA. we celebrate killers every day. William Wallace, Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Cortez, and the list goes on. think before you judge.

Anonymous said...

Even if Lisa Owens was abused, Jeff was in the shower. He wasn't beating her at that time (if ever). She was not in immediate danger. She had a job. She could have left him. This was cold blooded murder. He couldn't defend himself if he was showering. Think before you speak. Jeff Owens deserves justice and so do the people that knew and loved him.

There is a difference between a soldier killing and an everyday humane ...If you know so much then what is the other side of this story ? She was a syco and she doesnt deserve to see the light of day !
We are humanes not animals ! And if she had it so bad then why did she not do what a "NORMAL " person would have and gotten help . Not pull a gun out an shoot your husband.
I am sorry but you must be as nuts as she was and still is. To want to be in the limelight after what she has done she is still must be SYCO ! Get a life and keep those type of thoughts to yourself...obviously you did not know her like most of us did..
KEEP HER LOCKED UP !!!!!

The blogs about the NJ Girls team is getting to be a little much. The parents are behind their girls, people do get mad at the coach when he doesn't let them try and shoot from outside. This is a fact, he favors the girls that are from his friends. As far as the spirit for the girls, many of the fans that attend the games graduated in the 50-60's. We are proud of our girls and we are disapointed for them not for ourselves. To coach Hampton, let the girls drive the ball instead of walk it back, the do much better when they drive it down the floor.
We will always support our teams!!!

It sickens me that some one would "justify" her murdering Jeff with abuse. There ARE channels for abused women to take & get help, or...just call the police. But some of us KNOW THE TRUTH. Jeff gave her everything she wanted. Her problems started with sleeping around & going to the gambling boat. She squandered every dime Jeff made(& 10's of thousands more). She walked all over 1 of the kindest people I've ever known, & didn't stop until she killed him & left him for dead. And for people to eat this "adused" story sickens me. Lisa WAS the abuser, & then the murderer. But now she's being glorified? He was shot in the shower & getting off work. It was premeditated murder, & she going to get away with it after 9 yrs of prison, & come out like a hero w/ college degrees, telling a sob story of what all she overcame. This is SICK...it's a travesty. She has NEVER been repentful in ANY way of what she did to Jeff, & to come out in this manner, she has not changed, but I gaurantee is only worse. I'm still proud to be an American, but what's happening in America is making me sick.

In regards to Lisa Owens; Who murders your husband and leaves him in the bathtub and goes off to Vegas??? Sounds like she abused him!! If it were really abuse, why all the hiding.

Lisa was found guilty in a court of law. Now she needs to serve her time. All of it. Everyone that new Jeff misses him.

I hope Oprah gets a sense of true justice & see's through this woman's lies & crucifies her on National TV. I hope Oprah approaches this as the Travesties that are taking place in our justice system, because this woman, Lisa Ambers, is a true evil scumbag, and her family that supports her are just as bad, for they're just condoning what she did. Your scumbag daughter took the life of a great, honest, hard working young man that was loved by everyone.

There are a few things on here I'd like to respond to:

1. To the person who suggests that we should have to sign a waiver for smoking or drinking; then I think we should have to sign a waiver if we want to eat fast food, or not excersise, or gorge yourself at a buffet, or speed, or not where your seat belt, or use a chair and not a step ladder, or not wear sunscreen, or not brush your teeth, or go hunting, or eat meat, sugar, or any fatty foods, and the list of "risky behaviors" just goes on. I mean, come on.

2. To the person who compares a convicted murderer to a soldier that is just offensive beyond words. These men and women are defending and protecting our right to even have this discussion page. If you correlate a murderer to a soldier, than all taking of life is murder--even self-defense.
Murderers don't have rules of engagement, soldiers do.

3. To the family of Jeff Owens, you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I agree..even if she was abused, she was not in immediate danger.! Here's a tid bit of info for everyone..I worked with Lisa at the time she murdered Jeff. She killed him on a friday and then left state to go be with the big wig of the company she was having an affair with ( a known fact!!)..she then returned home on Sunday night, slept in the same house, as he lie in the bathtub dead for two days. She came into work Monday morning as if nothing had ever happened, smiling and acting completely normal. She worked all day, left that job and went to her second job where she was then finally arrested. So, my theory and a very good one is..she already had plans on going away for the weekend, which she did on numerous occasions (vegas in particular all the time), he came home and they probably argued because she was leaving AGAIN and about some other things (she also found out he transferrd their money so she couldnt get it,Im sure that made her furious and that alone could have made her mad enough to do it)... so she probably figured she'd solve the problem and also keep her plans with the guy she was having an affair with. Now, even if he did abuse her at some point, unless the man was about to kill her at that very minute (which he wasnt)in no way what-so ever can this murder be justified by anybody. Abuse doesnt give you the right to take another persons entire life and destroy their loved ones lives. I didnt even know Jeff and I was actually a friendly co-worker of Lisa before this..but she deserves to suffer for what she did to Jeff, not get out of prison in 9yrs. Heck, dope dealers do more time.! Im so sorry for his family. Its too bad that the community cant stop her from getting out in May.

In regards to the press that Lisa Ambers (shes not an Owens anymore in my book and its a disgrace that she ever carried that last name)is getting. I have 1 question......WHERE ARE THE STORIES ABOUT JEFF???? Lets write about his life (although cut short by this PSYCOPATH)Why doesnt WKVI or THE LEADER write a story about him and talk about the things that he did in his life. Work, hobbies, family, anything. When i went to get the paper this morning i was almost embarrased to buy it coz of what was on the front page (a smiling prison photo of a pure NUTCASE) TRULY A SAD SHOW OF JOURNALISM AND WASTED OF INK, TIME, PAPER, AND 50CENTS!!!!!!

I went to school with Lisa. She was always happy and very sweet. So it was a real shock when I heard she killed her husband. Now people say she was evil and Jeff was a saint. What she did was wrong, but do any of you actually know for sure that he wasn't beating her,no one knows what goes on behind closed doors. Maybe she snapped from all the abuse, along with physical abuse comes mental abuse. How do you know what you would do unless you were put in that situation. And if he was so well loved why didn't any of you people miss for 3 days? As for the boyfriend she supposedly had, this is the first I have heard about it. What's his name? Why wasn't he charged, surely if she spent the whole weekend with him he knew. You say you don't want her as your neighbor or back in Starke county, well what about all the child molesters the are over 100 here in this county. I say they are way worse than Lisa. I feel bad for Jeff's family, but come on she did her time, leave her alone, God will take care of her on judgement day. You people have no right to judge, like I said you don't know what went on behind closed doors. If you want the real danger out of Starke county make sure child molesters don't ever get out of prison, it seems like they only get a couple of months and then are released to hurt more children. It's unlikely that she will kill again.

Anonymous said...

To the person who posted on jan 13 9:16pm. I also went to school with Lisa. And the fact is..even IF Jeff did abuse her, he wasnt doing it at that very minute. She didnt just snap and kill him, you dont just snap while somebody is in the shower. I dont know that she had a boyfriend...but what I do know is she was having an affair and on her way out of town with that person the night she killed Jeff. Im highly doubting she ran and told they guy "hey guess what, I just shot and killed my husband" So they guy probably had no idea either. She accepted a plea, therefore it doesnt matter who knew what, anyway..she admitted it and accepted a plea..case closed. If you think she's served her time, then why dont you put yourself in the shoes of Jeff's family. Did he really deserve to die?? And not to mention the way he died and how she just left him lay dead in a bathtub. She may not kill again, but she had no right to kill in the first place.!! Or does minor abuse (if true) give somebody that right? I think not.!

There is a fine line between Christian Judgement and Compassion, years ago when my husband decided to kill me, I was left bleeding, ashamed of myself and with a broken spirit. Some of my Christian friends were the first in line to judge me. Here are some of their comments: Who are you killing now?(My Christian Boss said that before he knew that my Dad was in the hospital and later died that week)--He can never marry again because of you.(My Matron of Honor)
How could he have done it, he is so much smaller than you?(A High Society Lady who wanted me to keep volunteer)--I had sought counseling both for myself and joinly with him involving two ministers. I was ashamed of myself and blamed myself, but fortunately I had a good lady from a home for abused women--who helped me to overcome my shame and feeling like a failure as a wife. I did not try to get revenge either in person or otherwise, and I truly believe in the good part of the man I had loved. I was very disappointed in those who should have just offered a hug without words. I do not support any kind of volience against any other person, but I did know a lady who felt that her husband was planning to kill him so she went crazy and shot him. A good friend of mine would send me her son and daughter and their dogs, whenever her husband was home. One day the news ran the story, she did not show up for her school bus driving job. They found her beaten to death in a pig pen, her husband went to jail and her children no longer had a loving mother. Regardless of who kills whom, it is not a good situation and unfortunately the law 20 years ago did not offer me any protection until I filed for a divorce. I am still saddened by that chapter of my life, but I know with God's help and a few people(mostly my mother)I survived. I still believe in love and marriage, but I also know what the otherside of the coin feels like too. I am not proud of what happened to me, I could never tell it on a television show--it was and is a my own private personal business so I could not tell the world about it. I know that God has forgiven my own mistakes, and he is my Judge, however, so many people get compassion and judgement confused.
We have laws and if we break them there are rules to cover that but before man wrote them rules, God gave us the commandment, Thou shall not kill. Imagine what the world would be like if everybody sought their own revenge. Guard your words well for one day, you and I both will have to stand before our Lord and Savior and have to explain our words. It is not easy living in this world, but it is easy to jump on a bandwagon and declare what you would do in a certain situation. Nobody knows exactly what they would do until it happens to them. WE all need to pray for all victims and criminals of all crimes big and small. Bad things happen to Christians too, we were given a choice as human beings and some place either on this earth or in the next we be helt responsible for our own actions.

To the person that posted at 5:14am. I didn't say it was right that she killed him. And I do feel bad for Jeff's family. She probably shouldn't be getting out this soon, but our legal system is totally screwed up. I hear alot of people complaining about how unfair it is. But like I said it is highly unlikely she will kill again. Where as they let pedophiles out after a couple of months and they are very likely to moleste again. I never hear anyone complain about how many of them live in our community. And just because he wasn't beating her right at that moment doesn't mean she couldn't have snapped years of abuse could make you crazy. Or maybe she did it cause she was cold hearted. No one will ever know the truth. I'm not defending her, just don't understand why everyone is making a big fuss,it just gives her more publicity. Like I said before come judgement day God will see she that gets what she deserves.

About the Knox Sports programs, I think the blame needs to be laid where it started with the parents.
All kids are lazy if you let them
be. Do any of them do chores any more ? Are they held responseable for anything.. It they have bad grades it the teachers fault.. If they get in trouble in school they are being picked on. If they get arrested "it wasn't that bad they are only kids" My children have a choice they can play sports or get a job and work after school. I feel our children are going to fall into one of four groups.. The A+ group the really put a effort into learning the sports
group good grades but really give
100% trying in sports. The workers that would rather work then play sports and last, the corner group they don't work they don't play sports they are the ones you see hanging out up town or at the mall or riding around with a group just like them. these are the ones the will quit school or not put any effort into it so the can get SSI and live off the taxpayers for the rest of their lifes. We are Parents act like it. Go to a Basketball game there will be 20 kids on the floor and maybe 10 parents total in the stands and it is always the same parents. You can sit in the stands and cheer your child on just as easy as you can sit in your recliner. I don't always agree with the coaches BUT if you don't want to get involved don't bitch they know alot more about the game then I do, I hope when some of your kids get older they never get a boss or supervisor they don't like or they feel are mean to them because they will be calling you to take care of it because they won't know what to do other then quit.

Ya know I think I'm gunna kill my husband tonight. Yeah, go to prison for about 9yrs all the while getting a college education. I'll be out at the age of 32 and still have a long life to live outside of bars. Sounds good to me! (There would be WAY more people killing each other if all cases were like Lisa Ambers. This story makes me SICK!)

Anonymous said...

I have to agree with all the talk of Lisa , you are only making her more public rather it be good or bad talk.
The reason we have judges today is to do just that be the judge over what happens in a case.
She served time just like ordered to do , dont blame her for getting out early blame the judicial system.
And further more who are all of us to pass judgment on this lady. Most dont know her but add to the post from what others have said or told them to do or say.
Just as Jeff has family so does she....How would you like it if she was your sister , daughter or such you would want here with you just as much as Jeff's family wishes to have him .
Until you walked in her shoes or lived with her every waking hour dont judge her she is humane just like you are !
All the arguing in the world dont bring back a loved one from death nor does it solve this early release someone is always going to have there own opion to the case and never will anyone see eye to eye on it .
So give up and stop putting her more and more in the limelight , let it go so that no one remembers her and Jeff can rest in peace.
It has been 9 years and for most of the people that were not directly involved with Jeff or Lisa had probably forgot all about it and now everyone has her back where she wants to be on the minds of all . It is obvious or she would not have even thought about talking on a TV show.

Something needed to be said to the girls over at North Judson. They were dressed a little skimpy at the basketball game, and was totally inappropriate for a high school event!

To the post about the NJ girls being dressed skipply. The girls to day dress acording to the fashions. It is hard to find decent clothes that doesn't show cleaveage. The boys don't dress any better with the pants below the butt and underwear showing. PJ pants are not appropriate to be wore outside of the home. But todays world is a totally different from the 50-60-70's. I think we have more important things to think about. Girls and boys please dress a little more unshowing.

I know some of the women that are in Rockville and I know that in prisons and in county jails they don't allow the prisoners to murder or rob other people, they don't allow them to use drugs,so how can anyone determine that they have been rehabilitated? Who knew Lisa Owens was capable of murdering her young husband and depriving him and the people that loved him of his life, and who knows that she won't do it again when she gets out? Shame on Oprah Winfrey for glorifying the rehabilation of someone that could kill another human being in cold blood.I for one will not watch the SPECIAL and if I see Winfrey on anything else I will turn it off.

Well I took your posters advise and
went to a basketball game. It was the Freshman tourament held in Knox. North Judson Winimac and KV
all had teams playing. All the boys played their hearts out. I was surprised KV had more fans then the other three schools that are all alot closer. But it was a good time watching the teams trying so hard, in the end Knox won the trophpy and the best part was they did it with only 5 boys on the team. It was also nice to see the Varisity Boys who had played the night before at the Knox games cheering on the under class men. I can tell you it won't be my last game. So I would tell anyone that will listen get off the couch turn off the tv and go to a local ball game, It will give up a look at the good that is done in the area and you might even know a couple of the kids playing.

If you are concerned about how girls are dressing please watch the double messages you are giving them. Do you watch shows with women dressed that way? Anything from sitcoms to movies to award shows or Miss America? Do you buy or have Cosmo, Sports Illustrated etc.. in your home? So why wouldn't they want to be that way? WE tell them that is what's good and if you want to be good, you need to be like that. We tell them... So STOP telling them that. YOU can make a difference. You can not buy that magazine, not rent that video. Just say NO. Tell your daughter NO you can't wear that. Tell your son to watch his eyes. Girls are NOT his 'eye candy'. Have some respect. Tell the stores put that garage out of eyesight I'm sick of you affecting our kids - I'm not talking porn, I'm talking any scantily clad covers or videos etc... Did you know women suffer an immediate drop in self esteem just from seeing fashion magazines or any with those models on them? Can you imagine what it does to girls? Did you know men suffer from less satisfaction in their marriage by seeing those images? How is that helping them. They'd be happier without it! With young guys having that in their face constantly in this culture, what do you think they're thinking about constantly - when their around your daughters? You have a responsibility. Tell - demand, your culture to change and make the changes yourself. Money talks don't give it to them. It's very possible. Really think about it.

if you kids slipped all the way to the bus, thats your own driveway and your responsibility. and what time do you kids get on the bus, notice the post time of 5:31am no knox kids are the any bus at that time. and od did not have a 2 hour delay this morning. i will take your word that od is a good school system, did you know your kids can go to that school free of charge to you, check it out.

here is a sad fact. some kid's only food of the day comes from the school, no school = no food.

I have had kids in the Knox school since 1985 till the present. It is hard for me to sit back and read the negative things that are always being said about our school. It is a school it is ran by for the most part some great loving teachers and other staff members.Just like any other type of business sometimes things dont go perfect, however i believe our school does a great job in keeping our kids safe, however if you dont you have other options send them somewhere else home school them or go to a school board meeting

Dont know where you got your info from but OD did have a 2 hour delay this morning( Tuesday)

Refering back to the NJ cheerleaders..when I seen them last weekend, looked to me like they had long sleeve cheer tops on, not to metion they are turtle necks..lol whats skimpy about a turtle neck?? So what team did you see...?? seriously?

I completely agree, if you don't like Knox school system, then it's open enrollment, take your kids to OD. They also went longer than what Knox did at Christmas break too, so have fun with that!!!

KHS Cheerleaders looked awesome tonight!

we go to the kristkendel market in chicago alot around Christmas and i just thought it would be a cool idea if we did something like that around here but rub a a little bit of down-home funk on it ! besides what better way to boost the community morale ! have a couple goofball contests like best snowman, best sled, polarbear swim, snowball/polarbear dunk tank....maybe the mayor or chief of police or sherrif or you guys at wkvi would volunteer to get dunked, sleigh rides (cause im sure theres gotta be atleast one person around here with a horse),even a fun run/walk,maybe see if the fire department would sponser an ice rink, i think with very little effort things could really come together rather easily and if not eh well cant say we didnt try !

I don't know what OD kids had a delay on Tuesday the 18th because I dropped mine off at 7am as usual. And the bus went by my house at 6:30am as it does every school day during normal operation.

The KHS cheerleaders still need a lot of work before I would use the word awesome!!

Oh ya, let's have a winter festival. Everyone has an idea, but nobody wants to do the work. We have 4 summer festivals and a county fair and you can hardly get people to help with those. Let's just see what happens with a winter festival. Great Idea, but who's going to do it? Someone step up!

I was at the last Knox girls basketball game and a few fans should be far more embarssed by their comments than by the play of their team.

I would just like to say that the Starke County CO-OP weather radar was much easier to use and read than what you provide on the website now. Is there any consideration to going back?

Anyone hear anything about a shooting in North Judson last night? Was there any arrests?

I agree that there are many comments made by fans during Knox Girl's Basketball games which are a total embarrassment to the Knox community. However, as a fan of Knox basketball with no family tie to the current team, I'd like to voice my opinion of the situation. The biggest problem I see is that the JV coach is by far the best coach in the program. I've watched the girls teams play for many years and follow them closely. Over the past three years, the JV team has played much harder than the Varsity. They appear much more prepared as well. I believe over the past three years the JV has had records of 15-2, 13-6, and are currently 8-5 on this season. Rumor has it that the JV coach turned down a couple varsity positions a year ago. We are lucky to have him, but I for one understand if he would decide to leave for bigger things.

I agree...I think the last three Knox JV coaches have all won more than varsity coaches. I believe they won the conference four years ago and came close about seven years ago. I have been watching the girls teams (NJ and Knox) for a long time and I just dont think any top coaches will put up with the Starke county parents for long and crazy school decisions. Look at the turnover in football coaches.

maybe shouldnt include nj in the turnover of coaches comment.

Good job tonight LadyJays... One thing I have to say is screw off you non believers

Hopefully with the hospital changing their name they with change their care. Anything would be better then what we've had in the past. You can only put a bandaid on something so long. Don't get me wrong, but they can't do a whole lot there.

if the name change works for starke memorial hospital, i may try it.

signed ;) B. Obama

Would say your correct on lady jays if record was 9-6 instead of 6-9, this just shows what should have been.

Good job Lady Jays varsity team. Glad to see you run wth the ball instead of walking it down. Now need to work on spotting better when throwing the ball. This fan was proud of you last night. But I'm proud of you when you lose also!! Keep your heads up! Most of your fans are proud of you.

wow no one is complaining about the schools and the 2 hour delays this morning. what is it too cold to type.
when i was in school we didnt have 2 hour delays, i walked to school -20 uphill both direction and i liked it.

Well why don't we start on the hospital now. You have trashed the schools, sports, cheerleaders It sounds to me like there are some people that need to move. If you don't like it here MOVE. The hospital was set up to take care of minor stuff if you need a open heart go somewhere else if you need stiches go to smh. If you talk to anyone from Laporte they say the same things about that hospital that you do about ours.
But you are the same people that do all your shopping at Walmart and Menards but when a family member gets sick and you plan a benefit or your kids play sports and need a team sponsor you run right to all the local businesses for the donations. I have lived here my whole life and no Starke County isn't perfect we have our problems just like every where else
so if you are really unhappy here MOVE I don't think you would be missed.

Maybe if you din't have spend $10 to get a bargain at the local grocery store, and gas wasn't a nickel more a gallon here more people would shop here

Anonymous said...

By the time you drive out of town to get your gas and groceries, you've done spent your savings on gas to go there!

All of you people who complain non-stop and specially those who attack the children (players and cheerleaders), grow up! You really sound pathetic and sadly we know who most you are, becasue you have been saying the same thing for years.

For those of you attacking the hospital, yes they struggle, but they are trying to provide us with a basic human service. Get a life!

maybe the name change won't make Starke Memorial a level 1 trauma center, but at least there are people out there that are trying to better the hospital...so it would be nice to have the support of the local community!

I would really like to see Mrs. Dembowski & Charlie Weaver GET OFF THEIR BUTTS, harp on the State Congress & Mitchy, & all of them communicate with Sysco & GET THE BALL Rollin. Throw them an INCENTIVE PACKAGE to motivate them to Git-R-Dun! We need these Jobs...NOW. And I haven't heard of Dembowski assisting IN ANY WAY. Make it happen!

Great Job! Bluejays, you were awesome!! Boys keep up the good work. We are so proud of all the NJSP teams-GO Big Blue!

Anonymous said...

LOL Very nice games last night!! Blujays purely DOMINATED both games!! I for one am very proud of them and want to thank all the coaches and players for the experiance!! GO JAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm proud of ALL our community's student athletes...win or lose! Very few know the work that goes into being a STUDENT ATHLETE. Academics always come 1st, for w/o it, you can't be an athlete. But then...to give it all EVERY DAY @ practice. Yeah...it's pretty easy to believe in yourself after winning...but it takes deep courage to keep believeing in yourself after losing...& that's character. But I say to all of our county's student athletes...relish every second...& retain everything positive that will help you succeed after high school, because that's where the discipline, perseverence & belief in yourself will make the greatest difference in you & all those you touch.

Really Nancy,
Will not vote for the education bill because it will take away from public schools, I thought education was about the kids not a building or political group...

Glad to see nice comments on the ball teams for a change. The Judson gym had a really good crowd of fans. Our ball teams from class of 1986 was honored. Nice to know what some of them were doing now. Watching the little tiny girls playing basketball, and all the yourng girls from the cheerleading camp was great. Future players and cheerleading upcoming. Lets keep this blog with favorable comments on it. Enjoy reading them.
