Hey Nancy, you were elected to represent the taxpayers, not the Unions. Get back and do your job!

Anonymous said...

Hey Marcus
Apparently you aren't familiar with government. Union workers are part of the taxpayers she's representing. She has rights to do what she's doing, just educate yourself in legislative law.
She has thousands of taxpayers that are patting her on the back for her taking the stand she is.
GOOD JOB NANCY :)
Unions are needed to look out for the workers. Right to work does nothing but "create" low paying positions (I get it, it's a job, but how in the world is anyone going to ever get out of poverty if their pay wage is $7.25/hr and the cost of living is continually rising?) It's about the worker having their rights looked out for. Creating these low scale jobs does nothing but give someone a "temporary" position they'll end up being laid off from or voluntarily quit because their pay doesn't reflect the work they are doing.

marcus defey said...

Get your facts straight. The Right To Work issue was pulled from the agenda and Nancy is still MIA (why would that be?) If elected officials all did this there would not be a government.
Union workers compose less then 10% of the private sector while the State and Federal workers compose over 33% (these are the ones we pay taxes to support). The agenda of the State Union workers is to raise taxes so they can get a bigger cut of the pie. The State Unions work hard to elect those who will support their agenda and Nancy is one of them. The Union owns the Democratic party and the Democrats pay them back on the backs of the taxpayes they represent, yes even the private sector union people.
You blow this up as a Union Busting thing while in reality it is a budget thing. Overblown Union salaries and Benefits will put a private business, out of business, while such salaries and benefits in a State Union will only raise taxes for those in the state.

Today while picking my child up from the elementary school, I noticed there was no crossing guard on duty. I called the school and was surprised to find out that the school officials were not even aware of this. They advised me to call the Mayor's office as this is who they believe is in charge of employing the crossing guard. I am concerned that so many small children were left to cross a busy intersection on their own. What ever the excuse is as to why the crossing guard was not present, makes no difference to me or any child that could of potentially gotten hit by a car. Someone needs to be down at that intersection everyday before and after school. If I didn't already work and go to school full time myself, I would do the job. There is no excuse to endanger all those kids.

As a Rep/Ind....I applaud Nancy. But facts is, it's the Gov't corporate taxes that's driving jobs out of America. They need reduced from 35% to 20%. And Workers Comp needs integrated into Personal Health Insurance, thus dissolving the current mafia system. What seriously irks me is that politicians will look at cutting everything before they look at cutting something of their own. They make way too much $, way too expensive Cadillac Health Coverage, and their retirement packages are outrageous. So the FIRST place to make cuts is with the elected officials. I like our sheriff(& voted for him), but seriously, well over $100K income. Or the school superintendent, $134K, come on. I'd be ashamed of bilking the taxpayers like this.

Looks like for the next three days we're going to hear a one sided story about the teachers unions. Are we going to hear three days from the Governors office about the other side of the story? What if McD's had unions?? Would you pay $2 for that$1 burger? Jee, a family of 4 could eat there for what, $35-$40. I'm not in a union and never had been or want to be. I still make a pretty good income and I work in Starke County. Just another reason that jobs get shipped somewhere else.

Congratulations to House Democrat Steve Stemler of Jeffersonville. Stemler (who said if you take a job you better show up) "was one of only three House Democrats who remained behind in Indiana and the only one who did so as an act of defiance to his party leadership."

Unions are only good for one thing and that is keeping lazy people employed. Middle class is one thing, but when your salary and benefits come to $40, $50 or even $60+ per person that is just ridiculous. That is beyond middle class. That is why products cost so much in this country.

My union pension was cut by $700,00 this past year & I did not receave a COLA from the government but my medicare went up and Congress voted themselves a $3K cola. Unions have good points as well as bad points. The politicians should start working for us and make some cuts to their salaries and lifestyle like they want us to.

Anonymous said...

My husband is a retired union operator, having retired just a few years ago. He NEVER made anywhere close to $40 an hour EVER and was usually laid off for at least four or five months out of the year. Without his union benefits, we would be in a world of hurt right now. The benefits are well worth the small amount we pay in dues per year...no more than going out to eat a couple of times. We never know when his pension will go down the drain like some others have so we save all that we can and live within our means. I think it is about time the state and the federal government do the same. Indiana has a balanced budget and folks can slam Mitch all they want, but he has done a great job of making this state fiscally sound. Not everyone is going to be happy about the decisions required to accomplish that, but I'm not always happy about things that we can't afford in our own home either...it is part of life. If you can't afford it, you don't buy it. Don't use credit cards unless you can pay them off at the end of the month. Don't get yourself into payments for a car you can't afford, etc., etc.

The democrats need to get back to work.

I know a lot of union workers who are far from lazy. Many get up and leave for work in the dark and come home in the dark and put in a full days work while we have all of our Starke County welfare recipients sitting around with their hand out. Somebody's taxes have to pay for all of that.

Anonymous said...

Regarding the crossing guard... I feel the same but he is human and may get ill at times or have appointments and it is sad that there is not an individual to cover for him. We need to contact the school and ask about that. Also, at the beginning of the year we were told to drop off and pick up our high schooler in the rear of the building. Well it became very difficult while at the same time the busses were dropping off also. Then they decided to close the one end during dismissal of school, again making it difficult to park correctly to pick up my child without having to go there and turn around to come out. So I now drop my child off in front, which again is a tangle mess with the school buses also dropping off there now and I pick her up on the west side of the building to try and stay away from buses and such. My question is where is the correct place to drop off and pick up my high schooler?

Anonymous said...

high school drop off is east end parking lot

i am not saying i agree or disagree with their ideas, i just wouldnt run and hide form my job.

nancy (which i voted for) will have several running against her both demo and repub and the green tea party, so we will have someone new next time.

To all who vote republican in a poor county like ours, now you are getting what you asked for, house bill 1003 will greatly reduce our local schools budget and cause massive layoffs, please if your not rich dont vote republican.

marcus defey said...

Lets see. Taxes pay for the unreasonable benefits that the teachers union get. These taxes come from propery taxes, sales tax, state income tax, ect. Even the poor pay these taxes. What we now have is Democrats pushing to tax the public including the not so wealthy, more and more. Public Unions get their money from us tax payers, and that includes from private union workers. The poor pay too. It seems that the only thing the Democrats care about is to ensure the Teachers Unions pay for their next election.

Why would any President who is running for re-election in 2 years wish for $5.00 gas? That would certainly de-rail an already fragile recovering economy and doom any re-election hopes. That makes no sense to me.

Anonymous said...

“… the unreasonable benefits of the teachers union.” Could you please explain to me what these benefits are because apparently the union is holding out on me. Where does the idea come from that teachers are making an exorbitant amount? I am a teacher and am barely getting by. Taking into account the rising cost of insurance and the amount I pay each month for student loans (paying for classes required to keep my job), I actually make less per month than when I started teaching. No, I did not go into teaching for the money. Only a fool would do that. I became a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in this world and help our nation’s youth. I certainly didn’t become a teacher to be constantly abused by our government and now the public. When did being a teacher become a career to be ashamed of?
I am aware that there are teachers out there that don’t teach their standards or don’t put there all into their job, but they are not the majority. I and my colleagues work hard everyday to help our students. We spend our own money to provide them with materials when their parents can’t or won’t get them. We no longer get a budget for classroom supplies. We want markers for an art project? We must buy them ourselves. We stay after school and come in early. Don’t vilify all the teacher because of a few bad eggs.
The Democrats do need to come back; however, the Republicans need to be willing to compromise. The public also needs to realize that there are teacher s who care. Don’t punish us because of a few bad apples. We need to figure out a way to get rid of these teachers or help them improve without implementing a bill that can have negative effects on the successful teachers and their students.

If the HB1001 and HB1003 past as they stand on Friday all who want a new Indiana will have it . You now will have little or no local reprsentation for local goverment. You will have a one person running every aspect of our county, and that person answers only to Daniels. Your taxes are going up this year and the amount youpay for education will go up also. If Hb 1003 passes our small town schools are over. Daniel wans no school to have less then 2000 in the highschool. That means eaither abigger school or a new school , more taxes. Also the money that was going to ur school to voucher students(tax dollars) will now go to charter schools (privately owned) and operated to fund them.To get into a charter school your student must be in the top llevel of the public school. We will then have 2 levels of school one for the rich and one for the poor. Our schools will have no choice but to cut jobs cut sports cut teachers and have larger class rooms. Can anyone explain how this is good for our next generation who we need to be able to leed our county. The less educated you are the less paying job you get so Daniels idea is take away the ability to eduecate our young here put the money where he wants it and totally creat a 2 class state. The poor because we lack education and the rich because they can afford it . Godd luck to all here because we are about to retire and will be leaving the state and all we have worked for behind.

Here we go again, let's solve all of Starke County's problem with this radical approach that will harken all of us to the good old days of poverty: Deport all who were born in any other county, state or country regardless of occupation, color, faith or political association. Let them all take all their material possessions and money but deed back their real estate to the county. It will be a win win for the other better places to live, it will decrease the need for lawyers, policemen, firemen and even the laborors. Why not live where you work if it is out of the county? And try and remember that eventually we will have zero population growth as the local medical hospital does not have a o.b. dept. so those giving birth out of the county should stay there and raise those kids in the county of their birth. Lots of people like to complain but they move here and bring their bad manners with them while bragging up the previous homes. This probably won't get printed as it is a radical approach to cure all the complaining about every day unimportant things on this place.

Anonymous March 3 3:49 hit the nail on the head. For all you who support vouchers because you don't like the way your schools runs things, you better hope you child isn't a special education student, doesn't have any sort of discipline record, or have any C's (let alone D's or F's) on their report card; because if they do they will not be going to a charter school. Charter schools have (and will continue to have under this new bill) the right to refuse any student for any reason...and STILL get taxpayer money!

I hope that everyone will remember the republicans are the party that wants to cut funding for our schools. It is not just a matter of teacher salaries it will increase the number of our already crowded class rooms, and reduce our childrens chances for a good education. Children are the future lets give them the resources to succed, we sold our toll road to be able to afford this, please remember next time you have a chance to vote the republicans would continue to cut the average person out so they can give tax cuts to the rich.

Everyday we place our children's safety in the hands of our local school bus driver's. This morning this bus was full of children and guess what the bus driver was doing? Talking on her cell phone imagine that. We are suppose to lead by example. PLEASE THIS BEHAVIOR HAS TO STOP!! We need to be more strict about this. This is serious and I was appalled!

Just a random suggestion for our so called future. Does any of starke or pulaski county schools suggest that community hours for our students to graduate. In my opinion only it is a way to get our children involved in the community without being "legally" obligated. Or maybe just getting our children through is tough enough. Or maybe for those who care maybe it is part of our social obligation to encourage our children and patents to start caring. Again only a suggestion if any one cares. Maybe it is a way to get our youth involved about their future even if they live here or anywhere it seems somewhat logical.

Anonymous said...

I don't know whether there should be a community service requirement to graduate, but I do know that the elementary teachers often involve their students in such projects. For example, Mrs. Libey's class recently decorated ink pens, sold them at lunch, and donated the money to the Starke County Youth Club. Mrs. Pitts' class volunteered to help the custodians by washing a wall in the hallway. Other classes have done litter cleanup, donated their spare change for school projects, and offered to peer-tutor, read to, or perform skits for younger students.

Anonymous said...

I don't think community service hours should be required to graduate. The kids are there to get an education...some also work and have chores on the family farm, etc. along with church activities and 4-H and such that don't allow them time to do much more and still have time to be a kid. There are also a lot of kids with parents that work and cannot transport them all over the county to do community service work due to work schedules. Gas prices are another factor...who can afford to run their kids all over? I don't know how the parents with kids in sports do it. I don't go anywhere unless I have to at this point.

Also---to the person who said the toll road was sold..that would be very incorrect. It was leased...not sold. It isn't like they can pick it up and take it with them. It will always be here in Indiana and we no longer have to maintain it, yet we receive payments for its use as part of the lease. It's kind of like leasing a car...at the end you turn it in and the one leasing it ALWAYS comes out on the better end of the deal.

Anonymous said...

was the bus driver moving or at a stop?

if the driver was moving, thats wrong and should be delt with.

if the driver was stopped there are certain students matters that should not be talked about on the open air radio for everyone in 50 mile circle to hear. so call in on phone about that safety or medical matter.

the school use to have phones that staff could check out and use for school business, dont know if thats still the case.

If a foreign investment group can lease our toll road for billions in profit why couldnt we just not lease it and keep all the profit?

Anonymous said...

Leased-Sold.Potato-Pototo.No they can't pick up the toll road and take it,they don't need to. For X amount of years it's theirs. All the money from selling,I'm sorry,"leasing"the toll road has been swindled away. All the counties were going to get money from the selling, I'm sorry "leasing" of the toll road. Does anyone remember how that turned out? What a joke,ha ha. Kinda scary how our county elected officials didn't have a clue how that was gonna turn out.

Anonymous said...

Under Bayh, the State of Indiana paid to keep the Toll Road running. It ran at a loss and taxpayers paid--all of the state taxpayers. What Daniels did was get up-front profit money (new ideas, new ways) and bank it unlike Bayh who just kept paying with our tax dollars. If it was so easy for the Toll Road to make a profit as some of these post seem to indicate, why didnt Bahy do it?? The Democrate way is to tax tax tax and do things in the same old way, no new ideas, just new taxes.

Anonymous said...

Yeah Daniels got the money up front and banked it alright. Now he's trying to get two more toll roads built to make up for it. Maybe the toll road was losing money(as we're led to believe). If it was then why was this investor so hot and heavy to get ahold of it,and why is Daniels trying to build more toll roads? I mean since they lose money and all that. It's not thinking outside the box,it's smoke and mirrors and you seem to be quite mesmerized.

Anonymous said...

"If a foreign investment group can lease our toll road for billions in profit why couldn't we just not lease it and keep all the profit?"

That's exactly what we did. We, the State of Indiana, leased it to the foreign investment group, Cintras, which in turn paid all of the lease payments in one lump sum. The state received millions up front. Plus, we still own and get to use the toll road, which means, since we get to keep the asset, at some point in the future, we can do it again for more millions. It truly is a masterstroke of creative fiscal management that provides much of the upside (a big, fat bunch of money) and little of the downside (ongoing expenses of maintaining and operating the toll road). It's one of the reasons (among others) why Indiana has a AAA credit rating for the first time in its history (and one of only a few states that does - no small task).

Hardly a matter of semantics (potayto, potahto), the difference between selling and leasing the Toll Road is subtle, but significant.

Anonymous said...

Regarding the toll road transaction, I suggest that we just give up the discussion. It was a very complex financial transaction involving billions of dollars. Clearly it involved many lawyers, CPAs, and other financial experts to crunch the numbers. Each side concluded that they would benefit financially. For all of us know-it-alls who like to be critics, why don't we just accept that some complex financial transactions are just over our heads, and just shrug our shoulders. You know, NASA just put a 100 million dollar rocket into the ocean. Any of us here in Starke County have an idea what the problem was there? Better to keep your mouth shut so you don't prove to be a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt.

Anonymous said...

The Toll Road lease was a quick up front payment for a short term gain but long term pain.

So it didn't make much money. Big deal, I65, I69, I94, and I70 don't make much money either. Nor does US 20, US30 or US35. Wow, in fact they don't have ANY income.

Service has decreased and the cost has skyrocketed. That does not help Northern Indiana.

Anonymous said...

Sorry you feel that way, but I don't agree. This is the very place to offer opinion about all manner of topics, including, the Toll Road. Since we live in an increasingly complex world, maybe you should do what I've done: study, read, listen and learn enough to process and participate. I may not know it all, but I have learned enough to form a reasoned view. And, just for the record, my mouth is neither open or closed, wise or foolish. I'm writing.

Anonymous said...

Give up discussion of the toll road????? Why don't we accept that some complex financial transactions are over our head???? What you should have said is, "Let's all follow our government blindly like sheep".Then you want to talk about opening your mouth and sounding like a fool. What a joke.

Anonymous said...

The toll road deal is done. There isn't to much we can do about that now. What get's me is all this money that Starke County was going to get from it.Does anyone remember how that turned out? That story came and went in less than a week. Something crooked went on somewhere.

Anonymous said...

To 4:38: This was your comment,
"Since we live in an increasingly complex world, maybe you should do what I've done: study, read, listen and learn enough to process and participate." Well, since you've done so much studying and reading into complex financial matters, would you be so kind as to tell me which way the stock market will go? I mean there are some very smart readers and listeners who are buying, and other smart readers and listeners who are selling. The best we can do is give our humble opinion. The mistake we make is when we express our opinion as fact, and lambast those who hold a different opinion. The truth is that nobody will know whether Indiana made the right financial decision with the toll road until many decades from now.

Anonymous said...

Sorry pal,the right to question my government is one of the things that make me an American.I don't see how opening your mouth and questioning something makes you a fool. Sometimes keeping your mouth shut can make you look like a fool just as well. Sometimes using a lame argument, with a tired old cliche can make you look like a.... well I'm not going to name call.

FINAL FLU ADVICE: Stay home and away from co-workers who must go home and share their new virus. Demand sick pay so you can protect those who sign your check. Good Luck! And if they do not believe you are sick, stay home in bed and do not call in to work, they will come looking for your dead body and then you can kiss them and thank them for their concern unless they decide to fire you and which case you will have ample time to recover from the virus.

So, based on the school board's article, there won't be issues with charter schools harming public education because education will be competitive? How will it be competitive when charter schools can hand pick their students and public schools must accept everyone? How is that competitive? It's like playing poker and your opponent gets to go through the deck to select their cards and you get what's left over. That's not a competition.

Thank you Democrats for standing up against a Republican agenda the majority of Hoosiers are against. Look at the polls people are starting to understand how bad these bills are. I voted Republican and this is not what I thought I was voting for. I never thought the Republicans would push a state micro-managing public school agenda. Public schools should be under local control. I now know why Mitch wanted to use sale tax to fund schools general fund. Mitch and Tony are destroying public education and I am glad Nancy is standing up against these attacks.

I hope they stay and stand their ground. Daniels has bullied enough from our toll road to our license branches now our schools enough is enough call yourself what you want but think whos going to pay in the end. Our CHILDREN...

How much does a union ceo make?? "Leaders earned between $173,000 and $618,000 at major unions, the Center for Public Integrity found in examining 2009 tax records, with some groups paying dozens of employees in the six figures." Seems to be a lot.

Here's a question, Where does everyone get so much information about what Mitch Daniels is doing in Indy? I'd like to see it. It's not from the Starke Co Media or anything out of S. Bend.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone else wonder who is fibbin? Nancy told WKVI that her e-mails were running 60 to 40, with 60% in favor of the Democrats running to Illinois. But WKVI has a poll that shows that 70% of the people are against the Democrats running to Illinois. With a spread that big, it's a little hard to believe that both are telling the truth.

Anonymous said...

Yes the public school will lose a lot of money up front if the bill by Mitch Daniels get the private school funding passed. The poor people who cannot afford to send their kids to a private school even if they wanted to. All schools are not the best, but do we wanted to punish the kids that go to the public schools? I say if the bill passes they will be affected a lot more without the funding. Nancy vote no and all democrates vote no also.

I really hope people that are unsure of what is going on, don't rely on the comments that are posted under this discussion blog. These are mostly "opinions" rather than facts.
Just common sense- who is right about the % of people that support or disagree with what the democrats are doing in IL. Nancy was giving the % of support and opposition from her e-mails so therefore WKVI does not have a more "accurate" fact, they are using their poll to get their own %, two different numbers there. Not everyone that gets on this board e-mails Nancy, so of course they will be different.
What will happen to the sports of high school athletics? Good question but my guess would be leagues. You as an adult and parent would be responsible for paying top dollar to have your child join a league if they have any interest in playing sports. Talk to anyone in Lake County.. some Charter schools are decent, but the majority of people would agree, if you don't have to send your child to one, then don't.

I get my information straight from the source, just Google Indiana senate and housebills, and then read them. That is where the truth is. But honestly, I don't believe most people do that...they just believe the rhetoric of one party or another. These bills ARE long and extensive, most people really don't have time to read them, and I wonder if our senators and representitives have taken the time to read them either!

Most people would not want their picture posted all over for the crime that she committed. Why does she need a college education as a lot of folks would not hire an ex felon? It does ask for that info on job applications, the whole story should have been omited from the media, it gives the wrong message.

It is beyond belief that Lisa Owens will be getting out of a 40 year sentence after only 9 years. I watched the program tonight. She failed to mention, when she recounted what happened that night, that she left him there dead in their house for three days and went off to vegas with her lover. Ugh. Whatever happened to justice in this country.
She is going to live with her sister. Hopefully her sister does not live in knox anymore, or Jeff's family will have to watch her walk the streets enjoying her life while he rots in his grave. I seriously can't even believe this case.

Did anyone consider that maybe Lisa Owens is telling the truth?
She could of been abused. Granted she did the wrong thing.
She seemed to be the only person on the show who was truly sorry. I do not know what the right thing is for her,but she could be telling the truth about the abuse and was out of her mind afterwards.

When in times of trouble, let's spend $271,900 on a new softball field! Not that we could not need it, but is now the time to spend it? We're worried about having to cut teachers, so we spend money on a softball field!? What a waste of money "at this time". If things improve later, sure, improve the field, but not now. Come on, wake up.

Anonymous said...

When I voted no yesterday it froze but I waited a minute and it went through. As for Lisa Owens, I don't know her and I didn't know her husband but her telling of the story last night wasn't quite believable. She has the affect of a liar and expects everyone to fall for her story, I didn't buy it. That being said I'm not saying that there wasn't abuse but the way she says it came about that she killed him I didn't believe. If she was in that much fear while he was in the shower why not leave why get the gun off of the dresser and shoot him eight times, there were other avenues. She said she has lived on the support of her family, why didn't she do that before she killed her husband? You will never get the true story from her and he is gone so the only one who knows is Lisa and she is not believable, the judge was wrong in modifying her sentence, she should have to do at least half of the original sentence before being considered for release. This is where our system is so messed up, she admits to killing her husband and not shooting him once or twice but eight times and she does a quarter of her original sentence, it's no wonder people today don't think twice about killing someone, they know that there is a bleeding heart out there who will buy their poor abused me story and take it easy on them.

lawmakers should say in IL as long as it takes.

as long as it takes to make sure they are not re-elected.

the softball golden outhouse, one of the problems that this school bill hopes to fix is this kinda stuff.

the state current state funding rules will not allow construction money to be used to keep a teacher,
and the law is that the workers on that golden outhouse job cant not be a local firm that would work for $20 per hour, it has to be $40-$60 per hour union contractor (before you say my husband dont bring home $40-$60 per hour, cost is a total of what an employee costs not just pay) so if the lawmakers would get home and back to work this golden outhouse job might have been half the cost, and locals could have bid on the job

if your lawmaker is in IL, do not re-elect.

Eww I hate more than anything when TV or any media for that matter, actually gives the CRIMINAL an opportunity for spotlight. Their only spotlight leading role should've been the coverage they had during trial when their sentence was announced. After that, lock them up and not let another camera around them to "poor pity me" and try and gain support. You killed a person, not only is that breaking one of the 10 Commandments but you're breaking the law. There are avenues for victims of abuse to go to. The man was showering.. there was no form of immediate physical life threatening danger to her. I believe in self defense if you're standing in front of someone who is getting ready to stab you to death, then yes, I get that. But he was taking a shower! She's going to use that "victim of abuse" card til the day she dies to try and justify what she did. Shame on you WKVI for "plugging" this story on OWN.

It is NOT a new field. This will give the girls a working bathroom and concession stand. How it will cost 271K is beyond me. I'm guessing there's some pork in that number. The boys baseball team has a concession stand, lights, a great scoreboard, and working restrooms for both sexes. Softball has one porta potty for everyone to share. They cannot put the tarps on the fence because it would collapse.....they never cemented the posts in the ground.
I'm not sure how the corporation got away with this under Title IX, but it needs to be corrected pronto.

To "Did anyone consider that maybe Lisa Owens is telling the truth?"

Whether or not Lisa Owens is telling the truth about abuse is not the scary part of this situation. The fact that she flew off to Vegas for the weekend with her lover, who she failed to even mention on the show, then came home to her husbands rotting body, so she lit incense to try to get rid of the smell, is freaking scary. She got arrested at work, I mean, how long was she planning on leaving him in the tub??
Most battered women who kill their husbands call the police after they do it. They do not go about life as usual. That is a cold hard person right there. She had to use the bathroom at some point with his dead body right there with her.
I do not dispute her claims of abuse. I am looking at her actions after the fact, and those are the actions of a cold blooded murderer not a battered woman who committed a crime of passion.

Anonymous said...

Maybe on the next show Lisa Owens will talk about a boyfriend and the money aspect.
When you are in shock you just automatically go about your daily life. No one in their right mind would think 'oh this will just go away' really think about it. She was delusional.
And involuntary manslaughter? There must have been a reason for the lesser charge. What was it?

Anonymous said...

So it is ok to spend money on the baseball team, football team & basketball team but NOT the girls softball team? If you are a fan/parent of kids in the above mentioned sports it is ok to have an actual bathroom to use but not so much if it is girls softball we are talking about? Those girls practice/work just as hard as any other team so they deserve the same consideration. And it is definitely not free to walk thru that fence to watch them pay. I pay just as much as I would to watch any other sport so I think they deserve the same consideration.

The softball field is also getting bathrooms, and a big part of the cost has to be running plumbing out there. The youth softball plays there as well, so this is something for the community...not just the high school.

It took me about 15 minuets to find out the members current terms. Instead of a lot of complaining about what you don't like here, go to a meeting or better yet run for office. I am sure there are a lot of people who would like to have a choice for board members.

Veterans more also.

Folks these Gentleman sacrificed a lot, staying away from home for years and if you ask them, they were in some miserable weather outside for training.

I had 2 brothers in the Army and they missed out a lot when we were growing up.

Back in the 60's if you had money you could go to College and that would keep you out of service.

My family did not believe in that.
We have a great place to live because of them.

It is time we give them recognition for the great place we live.

I think a Veteran every day if I see one and donate to the local Disabled American Veterans Organization in Plymouth, since we don't have one in Starke County.

We just take our freedom for granted. Some of the parents and kids just keep talking at sporting events, when the National Anthem is being sung.

So sad, our Veterans take that time very seriously, they were sent to protect that flag.

Does Nancy ever have an original thougt? The article in the Leader was 100% Democrat party propoganda, that could easily have had Boss Hog, Pat Bauer's name and picture posted.
One question Nancy, you acknowledge that schools in your district are on the list of those who are underperforming. That must be acceptable to you because you resist any change to try to improve them. Why do you fear trying something new so that parents will have a choice? Do the big union bosses, who contribute thousands to your campaign, pull your strings? I guess money talks louder than constitueants. We know you got internet in Illinois and read the WKVI blog, so let's see if you've got the guts to type your own answers.

Anonymous said...

I don't see how the writer who commended Nancy for "standing up for the majority of Hoosiers" figures that. With only 11.9% of the national workforce aligned with a union, and an even lower percentage of union workers in Indiana, and with Republican majorities in the State Senate, House and Executive Branch, it seems that Nancy is standing up for a very loud, but very numerically small minority. The vast majority, over 80% of Hoosier workers do not belong to a union, and most of those are glad about it. I believe that she is going to find herself on the wrong side of history here. Same thing for Mr. Pat "what toupee?" Bauer. And what about Minority Leader Bauer, if he's not at the Statehouse, why isn't he at his desk at Ivy Tech? Seems to me that the taxpayers are paying him twice to not work at either one of his two state jobs. That's "double dipping" taken to an extreme.

I've been reading the "Discussion Board" regarding all the problems we face in society as a whole and came across this. I believe this is an instruction guide for humanity after some type of catastrophic event (either by our own hand or nature). There are many good points made, particularly #7.

THE MESSAGE OF THE GEORGIA GUIDESTONES

1. Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.
2. Guide reproduction wisely - improving fitness and diversity.
3. Unite humanity with a living new language.
4. Rule passion - faith - tradition - and all things with tempered reason.
5. Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts.
6. Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court.
7. Avoid petty laws and useless officials.
8. Balance personal rights with social duties.
9. Prize truth - beauty - love - seeking harmony with the infinite.
10.Be not a cancer on the earth - Leave room for nature - Leave room for nature.

Nancy is standing up for the majority of Hoosiers. Unions are not the only group she is standing up for. Unions indirectly raise blue-collar wages for all the professions they represent. Non-union blue-collar workers' wages are higher because businesses know if they do not pay a competitive wage to the non-union worker, they will leave for the better paying union job. Nancy understands this and is standing up for all blue-collar workers and some white-collar workers, which is the majority of working Hoosiers. Nancy does not believe only white-collar jobs should pay middle class wages. Blue-collar jobs built this country and blue-collar jobs can fix this train wreaked economy.

In regards to the negative education comments look at any poll and you will see the vast majority support public education. I do not believe most of those schools listed are failing. What is failing is the tools used to measure schools performance.

Anonymous said...

One problem that Nancy has is the fact that she represents a rural area with people of common sense, but she answers to a big city representative who represents a very liberal constituency, including Union radicals, with very little fiscal restraint. A state representative for Knox should not be agreeing with a state representative from South Bend on EVERY issue. We are different people. Clearly, less than 10% of the workforce in Starke County is made up of Union workers. We need someone who will represent OUR values. If she was ever to "take a stand for US" it should be to disagree with the far left, radical liberal leadership of her party. The fact that she doesn't tells me all that I need to know about her, and I am very disappointed in her choice to represent the people of South Bend instead of the people from Knox.

You can make statistics say anything you want. So all of your poll numbers and percentages given are silly!
Fact is yes Union wages do help raise the wage of others in the state. Mainly because it raises the average that the workers in the area get paid. In order to compete for workers the Companies must set a wage around or above that average or they will not get the good workers in the community. I am not sure how I feel about Nancy and her leaving the state. But dont forget the republicans have done similar. It seems as though no matter what kind of politician you are your still a politician!

Silly? Poll numbers are often influenced by the questions used and the way they're asked. But, the union figures I cited in my earlier post are labor statistics from the federal government and are considered reliable. Not silly at all. They show union workers in the nation at below 12%. Other figures place Indiana's unionized workforce at between 9 and 10%. Greatly in the minority. In fact, the contrast is so stark, we wouldn't allow a tail to wag a dog this big anywhere else. These numbers should be used to anchor the discussion, because the rest of it is pure opinion. As far as the effect unions have on the economy...it's my belief that they strangle innovation and drive up costs unnecessarily in the private sector. I can avoid that by not buying union made products. In the public sector, I'm forced to pay for higher benefits and fund the bottomless pit of retirement accounts with higher and higher taxes. I no longer want to pay, yet I have no choice. No matter how worthy it may be, we can't afford it. It will drive the state into bankruptcy. It needs to stop.

Nancy has rights to do exactly what she is doing. If things like this don't happen, you will wind up with a communist country. There will be one party running the show and then who can you complain to then? That party running the show might stand for EVERYTHING you disagree on and then what? Sometimes lawmakers have to take drastic measures to watch out for the people they do represent so we don't wind up in a country that is dictator run.
"Nancy leaving the state and you not paying your taxes just because 'you don't want to" are two completely different things and that was a dumb analogy. Nancy has rights to do what she is doing and you not paying your taxes, sure go ahead don't.. then when you get thrown in jail for that, you will have all the time in the world to write her and complain about how she was within the law and you weren't.
Nancy is standing up and showing the Republicans they aren't the Hitler's of Indiana. There is another party and other views that need addressed and aren't about to be bullied. Get 'em girl.

Has anyone had obnoxious people canvassing their neighborhood today trying to sell vacuum cleaners that seemed like scammers? My husband was out testing a motorcycle he was working on and was followed up the drive by a red van. A young twentyish girl got out of the van and offered him a free sample of some sort of "American made soap" and rattled off a business name so fast he couldn't catch it even when she was asked to repeat it. She immediately pulled a large box from the back of the van that had some sort of vacuum in it and the driver attempted to leave (leaving the girl behind with her product she apparently was attempting to sell). My husband yelled at the driver to STOP and take her and her junk with her. I told him he should have let the guy leave and then called the sheriff to pick her up for trespassing. A neighbor called just a little bit ago saying they had been at her house and were very persistent...wanted to come into her house and she told them no multiple times before they finally left. She was checking to see if they had been here or not since they did not appear to be going to all of the houses on her part of the road...just randomly picking certain ones. Her home is set farther off of the road like ours so I just wondered if others had experienced anything like this. She said she was going to call to report it to the sheriff's department but I thought posting it here might not be a bad idea either since many kids may be home without their parents while on spring break in the next few weeks.

I read on this blog that the commissioners are going to drug test all new employees and 10% of the employees in office now. Why 10%, how are they going to determine what 10%. That does not seem like a good idea, they are violating those 10% rights. Remember commissioners you are voted in by the people of Starke County. Drug test yourself.

Anonymous said...

10% drug testing is called random, no rights violated, condition of employment is all. me if money permitted i would test 100%

one better step would be all people getting any government assisted should have to pass a drug test, fail = jail.

Good for you, that's what I think as well! It gets old working 2 jobs to just make a living and there is people not working at all and living and eating better than I do while doing drugs and still getting the world handed to them while having things like insurance that I can only dream of having.

Thank You to lady who alerted the community that there is a couple people out there possibly "up to no good" with their vacuum scam. I'm home with two small children and this is the kind of info I need to know about. In the past, I have seen suspicious people driving on my street in the EARLY MORNING who don't look like their going to work, driving REAL slow looking "house to house". I doubt that every one of these drivers was "just lost".

with the recent deaths of two young men this last week related to overdoses and the rash of deaths this last few years of our young people to the same thing it seems to me like the community has not said much we are truely facing an epidemic here and I never see anything posted or talked about much on here concerning the addiction issues in the comminuity is the elephant in the room?

If you remember last year the Indiana State Police issued a caution warning about people coming to your house with candles. they were trying to sale. If you smell them they made you confused. After they would push their way inside your home and take what they wanted.... Be Careful.

I keep reading all the changes they want to make to education and have a real problem with Governor Daniels calling himself an education governor.......and then keep pulling money from the schools while at the same time requiring more from them. It's difficult to do more with less money and few teachers. Enough already ...... give schools the tools and money they need to meet the needs of the students. I agree that there need to be benchmarks and accountability, but hamstringing the proders won't accomplish the goals set.

I think it is what you consider a scam. I know there were people coming around sellimg Kirby vacuum cleaners. To me, that is a scam. Those vacuums aren't worth the money!! But maybe these people are different ones. Sounds like them, though, as they leave one of their people and drive elsewhere. They offer a free gift of some kind for watching their demonstration. I had someone come here last year and they were in my home for 3 hours!!! They're not getting in again!

Nice to see some helpful information about keeping our community safe, instead of the SAME OLD ARGUING about Nancy D., Lisa O., and school sports. These arguments go no-where. Blogging about suspicious activity could prevent a serious crime!

Anonymous said...

I wasn't home when the potential scammers were here so I didn't see what they had, but my husband said it was not Kirby they were representing. Again, the card they gave him to look at (he should have kept it) did not have Kirby on it and looked like something printed on a home computer. They were very persistent about wanting to get in the house and he was very convincing in telling them no. I don't believe they were local as one of the men in the van was black and there aren't many black people that I know of living in the Knox community. I'm not racist but it might be helpful in identifying these people if they are to get into someone's home and cause harm. You hear about the people who go around trying to reroof houses and such that rob houses while one is talking to the homeowner and the others sneak in through another door, etc., and take valuables. With a lot of kids being home next week on spring break, possibly without adult supervision), this should be a concern that people are aware of.

I agree...this forum is often used for a lot of bickering and could be used for much better purposes.

There are a lot people who miss use the system. People on welfare, I know some that are driving around in new cars. Young people on foods stamps that don't even try to work.
We support the food pantry as a community, why not ask the ones getting the food do something for the community. Giving is good but it wouldn't help to have those people do a little work. I'm sure the council could find something that needs cleaning up.

The Dem.'s left to MAKE A STAND IN PROTEST. Should people who serve the public, on taxpayer $, such as teachers, State Workers really need a Union? Yes, still be able to "collectively bargain" & keep same wages, but a Union is just "middle men" making big $, which can be done w/o them. Myself, I think ALL the ELECTED'S income & benefits need GREATLY reduced, including their operating budget, for EVERY ELECTED OFFICIAL. A sheriff should NOT profit on food $, then ask for taxpayer $ for assault rifles. The parties have become the Capitalists(corporate thieves) & the Socialists(free hand-outs to all), not the Rep & Dem. The Medical Field should be NON-PROFIT, with less "middle-men", reducing operating costs greatly on tax-payers. Student Loans should be Non-Profit, as it's become Big-Business. Many things being allowed today were called RACKETEERING 50 yrs ago, & were prosecuted. Now banks are Un-Regulated, making tax-payers pay for their foreclosed loans. That's what the Bush family was being indicted on in Texas, S&L scandal, when ALL the evidence was in the World Trade Center @ 911. Allowing off-shore bank accounts to avoid taxation for rich should be against the law. Politicians have manipulated laws in order to profit. Bernie Madoff says the Gov't is a Huge Ponzi Scheme & I'm startin to see it. But it's so huge that just through elections can not stop it. Just have fun w/ ur kids & say your prayers, because this world that's being bestowed on them look's onminous.

I wish your husband had kept the card and posted it somewhere for all to see. I am glad he was able to get rid of them! I don't let sales people in my home. If I want something, I will go to the store and purchase it!!! That way I am relatively sure I am getting something on the up and up.

Bravo, let get back to the comedy team of Tom & Lenny, they do such a good job of advertising places to eat don't they? However, since Tom claimed that neither could eat all of their big sandwitches--what happened to the rest of it? Lenny has family to help eat it, but Tom needed some food beyond r.noodles so may we assume that it made three more meals for Tom. However, if it just got wasted--you should remember what your mothers may have told you--eat all of your food, there are starving people in Africa, Haiti and Japan; and if that is too far to mail it, then my cat would have enjoyed it, she is too wild to visit vets and she would have enjoyed the food a lot. Do you two men plan to have bloodwork done live on radio so we can see if you should be eating healthy! It might drum up business for the doctors or hospitals in the area. I am sure some nurse would be delighted to come there and collect, maybe the new Health Department Doctor needs to make an WKVI office call with her needles and tubes while broadcasting your pictures around the world. It was such a good picture of Tom donating blood even though he was carrying germs that week, then too he got feed well afterwards.

Fail=Jail. Let's see, hmm, what's wrong with that. Prison overcrowding, millions more in taxes(drug testing is not free). Somebody has got to take care of their kids when they get locked up.More taxes there too. Unless you want to take care of them at your house. If you are so jealous of these welfare dudes then quit your job and go on welfare yourself. I think you'll find the humiliation far outweighs the "benefits". It ticks me off that people cheat the system, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they are getting the world handed to them. Anyhow how long do you think it would take for these people to figure out ways to beat a drug test. They might be lazy but they aren't stupid.

That person who said about the State Police and the candles. One time I was sniffing a candle at Wal-mart and almost passed out. That was a wierd day.

worst T/P job ever, friday nite some kids tried to TP my house, if you cant do any better than that i would quit. didnt your parents teach you anything. hold the roll so it unrolls when thrown and 1/2 roll or less works best, dont do mail boxes or electric lines, stick to trees and bushes, and totally wrapping a car is good.
someone needs to invent an app for that or video game to teach the right way, whats this youth coming too, too lazy even to properly TP a house.

Some Superintendant was recently interviewed on WKVI and claimed that the new education bill makes "no sense." But, if the education bill passes, and 10 students from Eastern Pulaski transfer to a charter school, why shouldn't the money that was going to be spent to educate them be transfered to the charter school who is going to educate them? If any public agency provides fewer services then the agency's budget should get cut. The "public money" doesn't belong to the public school, it belongs to the "public." The Superintendant apparently wants to spend the same amount of money for his school even after the 10 students are no longer there. Now that's something that makes no sense.

Anonymous said...

There is a reason why the superintendents are against vouchers, and could want to keep the same amount of money-with less kids..
Take a look at these factors:
Annual salaries- teachers, and superintendents.

Then disect the real truth of what a year really is in relation to their annual salary. How many days off, vacation, holidays, breaks, in-service days.

Private schools is the right of everyone to send their children there. But why cut the public school because of their wanting to make that choice. I know a lot of teachers are having to fund out of their own pockets to upgrade their classrooms and buy supplies for the children. Lets not punish the poorer people beacuse of this project Mitch Daniels wants to impose.

Anonymous said...

Charter Schools are private owned corporations. When your tax dollars are taken from the school to have to pay taxes for and moved to a private bussiness don't colplain about the rise this year in your taxes. If a child goes to a private school the parents will pay that bill also. How long will it be before you are also paying tgaxes to keep the private school open also. Daniels ploy is to close all small schools 2000 students or less. That means OD school ,NJSP schools ,Culver Winamac Lacross South Centeral and many more will close and all will go to either a private or a large consolidation and you will still pay the same amount of taxes

Anonymous said...

North Judson San Pierre Corp has already told many teachers they won't be back next. Some class sizes are now so large with the cuts all the students won't fit in the glass room.Just how great are some of our teachers . A few took a buy out so the younger teachers with families could keep their jobs and that quality person now is no longer teaching our students because Daniels knows better how to educate our children.

Anonymous said...

The more tax dollars that are removed from a county the less services the local govement can provide. Reduceing money to schools is reduceing services (EDUCATION). The budget for the county will began to be reduces as less bussiness and people come to small comminities. Our local school will not be able to offer the same quality of education large corps and private schools can. Our work force will be less educated which means they will earn less money. The only jobs that will come her will be the very low paying. Just think of how many of our local student who went to college to be a teacher either wouldn't be able to get a job here or be forced to relocate out of the county. Either why you cut it our counties population will began to go backwards. If Daniels has his way you will not ownly see schools consolidated but counties also.I wonder where the multie county seat will be (INDIANOPLIS) and we will have no say over anything but still pay the same or more in taxes.

I'm tired of the teacher bashing, like some people think we're ripping you off. Teachers do not get any paid holidays, and we do not get paid for our summer break. Some of us ask that our salary be segmented so that we receive checks over the summer, but we only get paid for our contracted days.

Mitch Daniels doesn't know how to better educate our children, he knows how to make money he is a business man first. Hoosiers you should have known that before you put him in for a second term. Remember that when he runs for a higher office which I'm sure he will.

does anyone else understand what going broke is, i dont think anyone does here

ILL, Michigan, Ohio are all millions in the red.

Indiana must cut everything, and cut it now. education, welfare, license branch, government pensions and staff, cut everything and close somethings totally. cant wait tell there is nothing left.
states have to balance the books just like your household.

i am glad mitch has a business mind and no heart, and didnt go run and hide when things got tough.

if the truth hurts, just wait you havent seen anything yet, the real pain is coming.

Anonymous said...

I agree with your post except on one point. Yes, our state is in better shape than most because of Governor Daniels business acumen and fiscal management experience. But, I don't think he has cut budgets and programs without heart. He left public education for last and cut it least. Conversely, Leader Bauer and the Democrats tried long ago to spend the state's Rainy Day Fund and all of us into near bankruptcy with the resulting need for higher taxes, like our neighbors in Illinois. As it is, these people will be costing us a small fortune, unnecessarily, as they will force a special session to be called just so some work can get done.

OK, the "dems" left the state to make a point. We get it. I ,as well as most other democrats in the community are beginning to have our doubts. Would their voices be better heard in the state house, where they were ELECTED by us to serve ??? Right now they are sitting at a table in some hotel whispering back and forth to eachother, instead of standing in a public arena where they can actually be heard. At this point, even the very people that put them in office are wondering what how long will we have to wait to see these ELECTED officals back at the position they were GIVEN the opportunity to hold. By the way, did I mention I was a democrat? I voted for someone that I thought had the people in mind and would speak for us. How can he/she do that from a hotel in Ill.?? As far as the fine that the state is, or is about to inpose on these ELECTED officials... I would like to see a full disclosure concerning how these fines are paid. For that matter, I would also like to see how the bill for the extended hotel stay, as well as all other bills accumilated assoiated with this period, such as meals, fuel cost, laundry services, and so on, are being paid as well. If these cost are being paid by OUR tax dollars, even in part, we have more to worry about then why they started this "protest" to begin with. We, as a community, continually state that "elected officials, reguardless of political/religious belief, should be held accountable for their statements and actions". These ELECTED officals are not giving the people that put them in office the proper respect by simply reaching out to them in any way to solidify their party. They can easily contact local radio or television stations and make public statements to inform us of their current stand and/or intentions or any progress in the issue in whole. By the way, I did not single out any ELECTED offical by name intentionally. I do not want others to simply defend the person/persons that they might have voted for or are friends with. We should look at this issue without reguard to personal or professional affiliation to those involved.

I haven't been on this discussion board for a bit but came across the post regarding the "vacuum" sales. This happened at my parents house while I stopped over on my lunch break!! Seriously, same type of ordeal. This guy walked up to the door and then after he kept insisting that this was the "best" and let him in to show my mom (keep in mind, she already told him no and that she had one of those vacuums thats installed through your house/walls) I finally walked up and told him I was calling the cops if he didn't get his unwanted soliciting off our property. They started piling out of the red van as well. Luckily I was there because I could easily see what you mentioned about people trying to find a way into the house while you're being distracted by an annoying "plug of a product." Very true though about the kids being home this week from school.

i support the democrats going to IL now. it was explained to me how i could understand it. they told me that they were representing all the people not just the ones that got out and voted the republicans in by a landslide. they are looking out for the 50% that gave up on voting, so they know how those people think. its all so clear now, wait, wait i think the cool aid is wearing off, i am starting to think clearly now, oh man that was close, i almost got in my car a drove to indy to picket with premade signs, and just picket with no idea of what i am picketing about.

A couple of weeks ago, Nancy said that she ran to Illinois just to give us all a chance to read the legislation that was being rammed through the session. I thought that was pretty far fetched at the time. Now, several weeks later, she is still hiding out. The bogus reason has proved to be bogus all along. Sometimes an elected official should be careful what she says, because her own words may come back and bite her. Ouch.

I take exception to the woman who said that voting for mayor "isn't worth the time".

What about the 'time' of military veterans over these past 200-plus years that fought and died for your right to vote?

Should they have just laid down and let the enemy walk all over them because it "isn't worth the time"?

Maybe I'm being overly dramatic, but I'm just trying to make a point.

Our elected Democrats "conducting business" from a hotel in Illinois are between a rock and hard place now. They foolishly chose to follow the Pied Piper of South Bend to Urbana under the pretense of having time to study proposed legislation. After accumulating huge fines and hotel expenses that the Democratic Party promises to pay for them, who is going to pay if they see the folly of their way and come back home on their own? If you read the Pied Piper, you will find those "children" are still locked in a cave somewhere.
