I find it interesting that the South Bend stations have the names and charges for the home invasion but out local station hasn't released that information.

Starke County Community Jail Committee
To help you gauge the sentiment of the community I would like to offer a few suggestions such as hire a jailer who will do the job & watch the prisoners thus preventing fires & jail breaks. An elected official was relieved of her duties for what turned out to be inaccurate accusations & still hasn’t been reinstated. How much money has the class action lawsuit cost the taxpayers? I haven’t heard a specific dollar amount. Doesn’t matter, just create another tax for us, after all the economy is doing great, everyone has jobs & is making good money. While some taxpayers are on fixed incomes, I’m sure they don’t mind sharing their money to provide a comfortable place for the scum of the community to recuperate while they compare notes with their fellow law breakers and think of other ways to break into our businesses & homes. Maybe tax us enough to pay them a decent amount of money for time served & they won’t need to rob & beat us, then no one in jail & overcrowding problem solved. Seriously! Prisoners are not there to be rewarded, cuddled or pampered. It is punishment for crimes against society.
Why have Doug Gutwein of Francesville request permission for the county council to be able to adopt a COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TAX instead of Nancy Dembowski of Knox, She has already volunteered our refund from the $320 million dollar state mistake to go to education. New ways to tax people isn’t the answer to all problems. All of you were elected by the people to represent all of us, not just a few criminals.
Yes. Yes.YES!!
Maybe sell some of the confiscated drugs back to them & use that money to build a better jail. Arrest them again, confiscate the drugs, let them out, sell back to them again & repeat until a nice jail has bee built.
The class action lawsuit referred to is filed by Jack Haut a former inmate at the Starke County Jail. He took one of our greatest residence from us and he is garbage. The county government is only doing what is necessarily to avoid further litigation. Makes sense to fix the problem even if it cost the taxpayers some money.
Wow1 Republicans proposing a tax increase. You Teabaggers had better get right on that.
Lets build a new jail for the doctors prescribing all the prescription drugs that these guys are eating, make room in that jail for the Hatchet men of Bain Capital taking away job opportunity s from our desperate citizens, and lets have a cell for Mitch to sit and think about the location of more mystery money.
With respect to the recent Starke County home invasion. If every man and woman exercised their 2nd amendment rights as they ought to, we wouldn’t need a new jail but might need larger graveyards.
Jack Haut a former inmate at the Starke County Jail.
OK, but like anonymous said Still no dollar value to that lawsuit. Why not put the proposed COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TAX on the ballot & let the taxpayers vote on it instead of the commissioners? Taxation with representation for a change. Because then there wouldn't be a new jail.

Should have said "county council" not "commissioners".
Seems like education would be the place to put the states bonus money. An educated person may just take advantage of opportunity and stay out of jail.
With the so called Right to Work legislation looming I hope that our local teachers realize they have the potential to be oppressed by our Republican lawmakers. Don't stand for it. Let them know they will be voted out.
Starke County consists of Bass Lake,Hamlet,Knox ,Koontz Lake,North Judson and San Pierre--Then why do some cities in Starke County get NO benefits? Examples will include for one, Knox schools got new laptops and IPADS for students and teachers to use at home--why didnt North Judson get anything!? Example two, school lunches-all other Starke County cities have pretty good choices BUT of course North Judson Schools have the same thing every week AND to make it all worse half the time such as today the food was spoiled! We pay our taxes and still our kids must suffer. All cities in this county should have the same opportunities--anyone else feel this way and ready for change!?
A law was passed that if we hit a certain percentage of surplus in our budget that we should send it back. It comes to about $50 a person. It is not the states bonus money, it's tax surplus. I'm all for education but a person doesn't need a lot of education to know right from wrong. How many of the people in jail are repeat offenders?
Why are the prisoners complaining about the jail? They already get a roof over their head, meals, etc. There is an easy solution to their problem: get a job, stay off drugs, and don't do anything illegal. Not getting in trouble is a great way to reduce overcrowding. It seems many people have forgotten what common sense is. I know I'll get in trouble if I drink and drive, do drugs, or break into homes. So I simply don't do it. Who really cares if it's not a 5 star hotel?
Mitch Daniels has been an advocate for a business friendly state but in the same the breath has bashed our unions which have provided training for a skilled workforce that stands alone. 90% of our factories employed skilled union employees at the outbreak of world war II. These skilled workers turned out the weaponry that ultimately prevailed and secured our freedom. Now the working class are at the mercy of the privileged, Very few of the privileged have served when our country has called. They coward at the thought of the average becoming educated and having a voice. Mitch cut $320 million dollars from education. They persuade the uneducated that the tax dollars that are taken from the privileged will hurt the average person.
We entered this perilous economic period in 2007 and 2008 and our Republican President George Bush call upon our people to spend more money, it would bring us out of our economic turmoil when in fact it fed the credit crunch and the consumer fetish of cheap product from China that we replace yearly. Come on! wake up! Our democratic government has a role. Protection from oppression. Our President has been lynched by the conservative media for an attempt to stimulate our economy after Wall Street has line its pocket with your retirement funds. Right to work is one more attempt to shut you up. A national deficit is unwelcome but so is legalized slavery in the workplace. Some may argue that a lower wage is needed to keep us competitive. Tell that to corporate America That is not reinvesting in our country and hoarding trillions of dollars. Now that interest rates are at an all time low we should invest in our countries infrastructure and working class.
Don't listen to the fat cats that make billion on high interest rates they would have us build our infrastructure when it benefits them and that is where Mitch came from. Mitch is for Mitch, that why he moved to Indiana in the first place.
To the person that has a problem at NJ sounds like you need to go to a school board meeting in NJ. This is a local issue and has nothing to do with Knox.
The opportunity that education may present could be a job. This could limit the number of people that are so desperate that they turn to drugs or burglary. They may stay out of jail. I agree that you don't need to have an education to know right from wrong. but in this desperate job market it is a shame that intelligent hardworking people need a bachelors degree now to get a descent paying job.
Our local teachers have the chance of being repressed by the Republican lawmakers over right to work legislation??? Again I have to ask, other than stealing monies from the teachers' paychecks to support questionable individuals, their goons, and corrupt politicians, what are the unions going to provide for the teachers? Better hours, more vacation time, shorter school year, higher wages, right! Time to come out of the depression era mindset and realize all these protections are provided by law and mandate. Send the goons packing! Right to Work....Right On!!
Has there been any updates on Stacie Brown? When is she going to court or anything??
If you want to know the truth of how the "Right to Work" process really effects people, simply ask someone that works under those conditions now. I, as a state employee, have been under this program for some time now. The simple fact is this, the Right to Work law is favorable to the EMPLOYERS in many ways, and in no way to the employees. Under this process the employer can pretty much do with you as they please with reguards to hours, position, and raises. They can dismiss employees at their discression without just cause without fear of reprisal. They give raises to "favored" employees under the mask of "merrit". Meaning that friends and "yes men" get raises while hard working employees may get nothing. Right to Work ONLY works if governed by ethical employers. And they are few and hard to find in this economy. I have seen good, reliable hard working people terminated under false pretense simply because they did not agree with certain policies and stated their concerns. I have seen others passed over for promotion and denied raises because they were not "friends" of management. But those that play golf, hun or fish, or go drinking with "management" recieved raises, better positions, and generally favored. I am in no way a fan of Union. However, without a Union, or a employee-employer agreement, employers have an open hand in the treatment of workers. There must be some legal and binding agreement of some type involved to ensure any kind of fair treatment of employees. But NOT the Right to Work process !!!
A lot of the people complaining about the jail are only thinking about the inmates. It's not just about them. Ask someone in the prosecutors office, a sheriff deputy, any city or town police officer or anyone that has even had to visit for any number of reasons. The place is a dump and a crappy place to work. The building is run down and not set up for today's usage. Think about that.
Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpao, who houses inmates in tents and makes them wear pink underwear, and feeds them peanut butter and jelly and baloney sandwiches, says if they don't like it there, don't come back!! Incareration is not supposed to be a comfortable vacation, with emenities some taxpayers are without. Questions about the construction of a new jail should be limited to safety and ergonomics, not creature comforts. (Hint to the supervisors: if you build it larger than necessary, you can rent out cells to the state and other departments (income).)
The Union Goons that you refer to are the ones that stood up to the elite goons and saw workers rights put into law. "Depression era thinking" Look at what has happened recently. Millions have lost their jobs, homes, healthcare and hope for opportunity. Now your State government wants you to just shut up. Sounds like a depression. Perfect time to come together and organize and have a say.

We do need a new jail, it should be located out of town on land that would provide a yard for inmates to excerise. They could have a garden in the summer and inmates would have to work and raise their food.
A room could be provided for them to get help for rehab on drug problems. Yes we need a new jail.
Why did we build a new jail in 1976? What a stupid idea.
It has only served as a high end resort. Swimming pool, spa, room service. We need a new building one without TV's for inmates.
I have worked as both union and non union and fared well on both sides of that fence. Any reasonable employer whether union or not will treat his employees fairly. It is only to his benefit to do so. Greed is the operative word when employees are not paid a livable wage or treated disrespectfully.
I wonder where the dems are hiding this time. Illinois?? Ohio? Oh where oh where have they gone?
Its a shame when politics in Indiana has to be conducted with a party leaving the state to protect its citizens from a State government that believes in oppression.
Limit retirement and cut healthcare benefits. Can anyone relate to this?
Th Republicans give it a name, demonize it call it Obamacare. Instead call it "watch your loved one die because we can no longer afford healthcare insurance that our employer no longer provides". Sorry I had to put it that way but the wealthy and our state government want you to work until the day you die. Or perhaps just fall off the map. I can't sugarcoat it, judge for yourself. According to the 2010 census report only 45.8% of Americans receive healthcare insurance from their employer. What do the other 54.2% do. Lose their Homes, suffer, turn to criminal activity? Our unions have fought for healthcare and retirement for all working people, Union employees or not.
I really hope you feel good about your comments regarding our Democrat representatives that are courageous enough to stand up to those who have no compassion. Please tell us we are wrong.
Hope you sleep well tonight dreaming of the Hoosiers that will suffer when Mitch has his way.
another walkout, your fired
Fire the my way or nothing Republicans and their man Mitch
One neurosurgeon returning from a briefing in washington regarding neurological treatment of seniors in ERs gives the following info. Patients are to be charted as "units"(not human beings, persons, etc), they are to be treated with tender care, no expensive testing or the like! So if your parent has a stroke or suffers from cranial bleeding, he/she will receive TLC and nothing else. A Panel of administrators will be the final word for a treatment plan. These are the "death panels" warned about in obamacare!! So it is true that Obama and his gang of thugs have no regard for your parents, or you for that matter. This despotic ideology, and the death of the Constitution has lead to our present depresssed state and will continue until we shed this nation of this criminal enterprise in the white house. How do you really feel about union goons setting the legislative goals for our state? I believe that founders were in favor of the people deciding by majority rule, not by the whim of self serving cadres of socialists. Remember folks, socialism is not for the socialist, just you and me!
everyone state, federal offices, should be voted out, period.
To Anonymous Jan 5 5:55 AM. With Republican "Tea Party" Cut funding mentality your loved one will never make it to your neurosurgeon unless they want to give up their home. Many of the elite businessmen and corporation's backing the Republicans have have moved our jobs with healthcare benefits and pensions to Communist China. Seems like a socialist system is OK when it benefits the rich.

Typical Rush Limbaugh scare tactics.

Why would you kill the messenger? A great percentage of people are lazy thinkers who would prefer to be told how to think or reiterate popular rhetoric rather than to invest some time and effort into looking into the issues and draw a logical conclusion for themselves.
Manufacturing moving to China, there is a reason for that. Repressive taxes and regulations forced on them by the present administration forces them to move to friendlier climes, only good business sense for the owners. These include GE, owned by one of dear leaders right hand man! This wasn't because of "tea party cut funding", it is due to democratic tax and regulate policies (tax and spend), and union interference (Boeing for example). Keep drinking the kool aid!
There have been no tax increases during Obama's term just a parole tax cut. Millions of jobs left during the Bush years. During this period and currently corporations and the wealthy have enjoy multiple tax shelters that translate into a minuscule proportion of their profits being taxed. The lure of cheap labor and exploitation of workers in third world countries has fed their greed. Now these workers are demanding a fare wage and standard of living. If these employers would only share their some of their good fortune and provide workers with health insurance and the dignity of a retirement during old age the government would be less burdened. Translating into lower taxes and regulations.
I will drink the Kool Aid you and Rush drink the Wild Turkey and eat the pills.
It is amazing to me that so many "meth labs" opperate in this area, and no one sees or smells them. What will it take for people to make that call to police. When will people stop turning a blind eye and make a stand? Will it take one of your children being arrested for meth use to say enough is enough ? Will it take a call from police to tell you that your child or loved one was killed in a drug related accident, or overdose ? Will it take a call telling you your child was killed or mamed BY a drug user running from police? When will people realize that not reporting these suspected "labs" does nothing but encourage others to indulge in the same activity? When will you realize that allowing these suspected "labs" to opperate puts everyone in the area in danger?
When you see someone that appears to be "high" on meth, does it cross your mind that they might have gotten the drugs from the place you have failed to report??
Please my friends, if you see what appears to be a meth and/or drug related dwelling or area, REPORT IT ! If you smell strange odors comming from a dwelling or area, REPORT IT! If you see a vehicle with appears to be involved in these activities, get the plate number and REPORT IT! We ALL have a responsability to help keep our area safe for our children and loved ones.
There we go, already wanting to fire those in office. Ok, do that. Who's going to fill their space and do something? Primary filings start next week, who's going to run? To those wanting to fire those in office, you better sign up or shut up.
no you can be fired just ask the treasurer.
INDIANAPOLIS -- If House Democratic lawmakers don't show up for work today, they could be fined $1,000.
Democrats have shown vociferous opposition to a right-to-work bill championed by Republicans, who have control of the House, Senate and governor's seat.
Republicans established the $1,000-a-day fine last year after Democrats bolted to Illinois for five weeks to keep right-to-work off the table that session
agree or dissagree it dont really matter just show up and do your job your being paid to do and was elected to do. or you will be fired
On a local level, I just read this morning’s WKVI IC headlines.
How does a bridge make a person do anything? That is as about as logical as the devil made me do it. Further evidence that personal accountability is no longer necessary or expected and we need to protect them and us from their own stupidity.
rod weigel, not often do i agree with what you say but you definately hit the nail on the head about the bridge. once they realize taking it out or closing it off doesnt work, whats next diverting the river ? i just hope the DNR doesnt let the city/county do anything to the river there as it is one of the very few good fishing spots left on the river without having to go into marshall county !
Please don't eat the fish you catch at the railroad bridge they are contaminated with mercury and we wouldn't like the park boards liability insurance to increase.
Thank You
Being the litigious society that we are, there is no more personal responsibility(nor common sense). With the hordes of unconscionable attorneys convincing the courts that inanimate objects are the direct cause of person injury, regardless of the fact that the injured party was drunk, stoned, or failed to perceive the obvious danger staring him/her in the face! Ergo, that damned bridge reared up and threw the last victim into the river causing injury/death, and therefore the city/county is liable for the exhorbitant attorney fees. Don't even ask me where we would be without attorneys!!
My posts are proposed to cause critical thinking.
There were a few previous posts expressing concern about traffic on Main Street. I have lived on Main Street since moving here and have not noticed much difference in the way vehicles are operated. Most drivers drive responsibly but there seems to be some vehicles, and they are mostly the same ones, that are driven as if it were a drag strip. Yes, I have witnessed vehicles trying to pass going southward side by side metal to the petal.
Additionally, seems every day after school dismisses there are youngsters who are letting off steam by seeing how fast they can go from the railroad tracks southward through the three-hundred block. This group is also a problem at the park.
I would not advocate a four way stop at each cross street but think beginning at Delaware and perhaps every other cross street going southward would be appropriate.
Main Street is not a thoroughfare as is 35 for those in a hurry
First off, I agree, the bridge is NOT the problem. Having no public pool for the kids is the problem.
Secondly, if Deniis Estok takes out the rapids at Hwy35, the water levels upstream will drop at least 16", thus ruining any canoeing or fishing that's there.
And Third....I know Joe Gurrado is sure enjoying this years IU basketball team. Go Hoosiers!
I have been around the USA, & jumped from many cliff-sides into water. Whether it be the quarry pits in Bloomington(the ones in Breaking Away), or on Table Rock Lake in Missouri, OR EVEN THE TRAIN BRIDGE, where I grew up next to all my life, you have to be aware of what you're jumping into. Yes, we grieve for that young man, but like in all cases, be sure of what you're jumping in to. The bridge SHOULD remain, but put a DANGER sign on the East side of the bridge(as well as the NO SWIMMING/DIVING ANYWHERE sign), for that's where it's too shallow.
An afterthought: I would think the railroad bridge is every bit as historically significant as the railroad station in front of it. I wonder why the area surrounding it has never been cleared and lighting installed to highlight it? That would not only further enlarge and brighten the view coming from the north into Knox but would deter undesirable activity at night. The cost to accomplish that would certainly be less than attorney fees and potential court ordered awards.
Just a question, I have no idea who to ask to get something done about the problem we are having on our street. About a week and a half ago, my two young sons found our small puppy, who had been missing for one day, dead on the side of our house. Last night, Friday, January 6, my husband and I went for a walk and saw a dead squirrel in the middle of our street, Keller Ave. This morning Saturday, January 7, as I was leaving the house there were three dead squirrels. My husband called me while I was at school and now there are five dead squirrels on our block in the middle of the street. I called humane society, which told me to call NJPD. An officer came down and spoke with my husband. However, the five dead squirrels still lay in the road. Should we find out if someone is poisoning the animals? Should we have that person come clean up the mess he/she made? Should we have this person come and apologize to my seven and ten year old children who found their new puppy dead? Nevermind the fact we spent alot of money on this puppy for our children. I had to explain death to my seven year old as he cried about the loss of his new puppy. Is this a health issue we need to be concerned about? Nobody has come and collected these lifeless bodies to assure everyone of what is causing this. Alot of children play on this block. Someone from the city couldn't come and dispose of them or send them somewhere to be tested? If anyone knows who else I can contact, could you please give me names and or numbers? Thank you so much.
fibre optics
does anyone know if the new fibre optic cables being installed in starke county have any residential benefit? such as high speed internet and if so,who would i contact?
Thank you Robert Tauteris for serving our country.May you rest in peace.
With regard to the possible poisoning of the animals, it may be up to you to send one off for testing to determine if this is in fact what happened. If you find that they were poisoned (your puppy included), you might be able to go to the police department with more than just "dead animals" being an issue. Poisoning would be reason for someone to get into trouble if you can figure out who did it and if it was intentional. If it is Decon or something that someone has set out for mice, there may be nothing you can do about it. If you get another puppy, I would make sure to walk it on a leash so you can keep track of what it is getting into and where it is going. I'm sorry you lost your puppy and your kids had to go through that, but there may not be much anyone can do without knowing how these animals actually died. If it were obvious they were beaten or something, the police and/or humane society might be taking a more active role in figuring this out.
All the dead squirrels and the puppy, if not poisoned, the outlook is scary!!!!
no dont fire Mitch and Do whats right for INDIANA REPs. but fire the chicken little dems who have fled like like little spoiled babys!! What a disgrace..
Question about fiber optic cable being installed. When being installed by my home I asked about it and was told it was for high speed internet. As far as who to contact I do not know.
Contact your phone company for high speed internet. Embarq put the lines in here just over a year ago and we got it at our house in December 2010.
Prayers to the families & friends of our lost soldiers. And not to be offensive in any way, but why are we in Afghanistan? We've never gotten the truth for Iraq, as Saddam had no part in 9/11 & hated al queda, yet we invaded TWICE. We all believe deep down it was oil, but why can't we HEAR the truth from our Gov't? So, why are we in Afghanistan? Look forward to all our soldiers, fathers, sons, wives, mothers coming & staying home. God please be with them all.
WKVI shouldnt make tom berg stay awake and on the air for 8 days. its not safe, tom is not a jeteye, they are not real, it was a MOVIE. its not meticlorines in his blood, its cholesterol. wkvi is better than its ever been, so lets not change the name meaning to We Killed a Valuable Investment (WKVI) leave it at We're Kooky and Very Interesting. just wanted to put it out there, i'm just sayin.
The longest radio DJ marathon was achieved by Stefano Venneri (Italy), which lasted a total of 183 hours on Radio BBSI, in Alexandria, Italy, from 16 May 2009 to 23 May 2009.
Guinness World Record NOT a movie.
We're there for you Tom!
Tom wasn't forced into the newest stunt, but it fits his personality while building up publicity for him and WKVI. But is his co=workers donating their hours of pay to him, or are they looking forward to all the food that he will acquire during those hours and who will pay the salary of the medical staff he involves. WKVI ought to sponsor a contest in which its audience gets to pick the kind of contest in which Tom is the star....he can be very entertaining.....
If Tom plans to stay awake to long, he needs to get new topics as we have heard about his dating adventure in which his battery was stolen. Maybe he could open the discussion so that callers could interview those nearess and dearess to him to just get to know Tom much better.
Shifting attention from local to international discussion. I was wrong in my original prediction that Korea would be the United States' next point of aggression. Not enough focus is on the current, and most explosive issue. IRAN. If and/when they go through with the execution of Amir Mirzaei Hekmati, an NATURAL BORN AMERICAN, that served in in Iraq. What would your position be with reguards to a response ? What do you think the United States do in response? I know th popular answer would be to nuke them off the map. But realistically, what should we should do?
In MY opinion, we should continue attempts in obtaining his release diplomatically without any military intervention. We should take full advantage of the 20 day preiod that Iranian law allows for an appeal to be filed. However, if they actually carry out their sentence, at that point there should be an immediate and decissive military response. We know EXACTLY where Irans reported nuclear facilities are being constructed or are already in opperation. THe first response should be to destroy these targets as well as any major military compound currently in use.
We, as a nation, can no longer be the worlds "whipping post". We MUST return the united states to the Superpower it once was during the cold war. We must regain the respect, or fear, of these countries that continually threaten the United States. We must stop sending billions and billions of dollars to countries that use this money to build armies to fight US.
Jeteye = ROFLMBO!
First, I had to read this about 5 times before I had any clue what you were trying to say. Thanks for the laugh.
BTW, I really hope you were joking around by spelling it wrong because I do not know ANYONE who can't spell Jedi. :) Oh, and what do you mean they are not real? The force is weak in you.
i knew how to spell jedi, dont want the trade people after me for using name without approval. may the farce bwu2.
Lucasfilm is litigious to be sure. I don't think they are THAT litigious though. :-)
Where are the owners of Premier Rental. I have been there everyday to pay my bill but they are never open. I also have a loaner tv becasue they had to send mine to be fixed. Now I have paid on a much larger tv which cost more than the loaner one I have and no one will answer my calls and its never open. sheila
I agree, Iran is our next threat. There will always be someone ready to antagonize us. Those goofballs in Washington want to reduce our military!!! What kind of idiots do we have running this country?? Also, I support the Democrats sitting out this ridiculous "right to work law". Since the Republicans rule, I'm sure it will be passed. This is a bill that should be put before the people to vote on!!!!!!
is it true that maroon 5 will be preforming at the radio station tom-a-thon? cant wait!!!
Is it true Haley Barbour, former Gov. of Miss., just pardoned over 200 felons, with 18 of them murderers, this week on his last day of office? That should be a crime in itself. How sickening some of our politicians have become.
Hope everyone understands the
Republicans have begged for unlimited campaign contributions without disclosure of the contributors. Now the presidential election will be bought. The wealthy Wall street millionaires are lining up with their checkbooks to funds the GOP super Pacs. Your voice in the workplace and Government is being taken away by the wealthy. Stop corrupt government.
@January 10, 2:30 p.m. - spoken like a true 'union' thug'! Not every person who works wants to be part of the same union thug mentality that you are. Every worker should not be FORCED to belong to a union, nor should they be FORCED to pay union dues, especially if they know the dues are being used to support political policies that they don't agree with. You just said a mouthful when you said it's 'ridiculous'. Please clarify why you think that every working person should be forced to pay union dues so that one party's political cronies can be supported? Unions used to be a security blanket FOR the worker, now they've become nothing more than a way to elect and contribute to a larger cause, and that is supporting and electing the 'donkey'. Good workers have a right TO work, and not have to support one political party. You DO realize that's what 'right to work' policy means, don't you?

There is informed speculation well within the realm of possibility that the Rothschilds bought the white house for BHO. This adequately demonstrates how easily the media, for the right price, can control public opinion. Point being both parties purchase as much media influence as they can afford, which equates to uninformed votes. The people let the media do their thinking for them. The sad truth is both Parties are enormously corrupt and becoming even more so as time passes. Sad.
Next item: First the bridge and now a handcuffed suspect commandeered a Kouts police commission. 2012 is off to a very humorous start. No?
To Anonymous,JANUARY 11, 2012 5:18 AM,
Wake up, the reason the unions support the Democrats is they both support the working class. The Republicans support the wealthy, the privileged, and those who oppress free speech and do not want you to have an opinion. Look at your future Republican presidential candidate Mit Romney the hatchet man that likes to fire people.
The democrats and the unions support the working class?? NO........they support themselves with their hands in the workers pockets. What they support for the workers is a socialist way, but socialism is never for the socialist!
just because i have never worked a so called "real job" doesnt make me stupid. i worked hard to get my disbility, had to fill out all kinds of papers and out smart doctors, lawyers, and the system. my kids go to school free, my food is free, and my fishing licenses are free, i have disabled plates on my bass boat. i have help with my rent, utilities and free hi speed internet. God bless American and God bless Obama. fight over your right to work all you want, as long as i have the right not to.
Ok, do some of you reaize that not having unions can cause you to be fired for no reason? You can be passed by for a promotion, the boss preferring to promote his best buddy, and guess what??? You can't do one thing about it. Union dues are not that much for the protection you recieve. Also, I would wonder about the safety of the shops without unions. The right to work does NOT mean you will automatically have a job because you want to work. And working for less is not something I would want to see happen. Wages are not that high as it is and the owners of non-union shops can pay what they wish. Once again, nothing you can do about it!! I still think it should be put before the people to vote on.
In a free country business owners have a right to fire anybody that works for them that they want to fire...hellloooo...the owner of a business has the right to pass ANYbody up for a promotion that they WANT to...it is THEIR PRIVATE BUSINESS! That's the trouble WITH unions...even the BAD employee gets to keep his/her job, while someone who is ready, willing, and able to do that exact job is unemployed. That's the trouble with unions...and good for you, 11:26 a.m. You get it! As for the safety of the shop...that has nothing to do with the union, it has everything to do with the business owner and the codes he has to hold up that are mandated by law...that's not a UNION thing, it's a FEDERAL and STATE thing. Protecting union members from losing their job, whether they PERFORM that job or not is reckless, irresponsible, and just plain...well...stupid. Not saying all union members are lazy, so p[lease don't even go there, but what I AM saying is that there should be consequences for bad behavior on the job, low production, etc., and your job should not be protected for bad behavior or inferior work ethic just because you're in a union. You BET you should be fired 'for no reason'...if that's what the boss or company owner says. And, guess what? It's HIS company, he does not have to give you a reason.
WKVI could help the unemployment rate for Starke County go down by hiring people to observe Tom's attempt to break a record. Imagine the interested people lining up outside the station. What a Great Public Help to those of us with a limited income!
No voice in the workplace that is very UNAMERICAN!
Anonymous January 11, 2012 12:35 PM
You apparently have no idea what you are talking about.
Take it from someone that has worked union and nonunion. The union provides training and guaranteed competent workers.
you are responsible for the quality and quantity of daily work. Competition for the union wage is very competitive if you don't deliver you are gone. Plain and simple. Most nonunion places I have worked at the pay is so low that the workers make up for it by being nonproductive they just don't care about their job.
I am not talking about a business that has maybe 15 or 20 employees. I am talking about larger factories. I personally know of a factory that treated employees unfairly. They demoted people with the training that DID do their job, but a woman better looking walked in and got the job that should've gone to the qualified person! And don't say that the qualified person should've just gotten another job.Where????????
If you are a compentant employee you need not worry about being fired, I have always worked for at will companys, and the pay has always as good or better than union pay but I never paid dues. So Hurray for MITCH AND THE REP Leg.
@4:56 and 5:54 - look at the big picture, if you can. Why do you think some 'big' businesses go out of business or file bankruptcy? It's because of unrealistic promises made by the company and unions, to GET those people to go back to work, once they've been on 'strike'. Greedy workers, in quantity, will force the doors of a corporation closed every time. You are out of touch, and just plain incorrect about being gone if you don't 'deliver'. It's possible that some unions are still acting on behalf of the product they make, to assure quality, but MANY are just as stated above. And what's 'un-American', is forcing people who don't want to BE in a union to pay union dues that go to a political party whose 'values' (if you can call them that) you don't agree with. Why is that so hard to understand? You personally know the factory treated someone 'unfairly'? That's a serious 'charge', so before you spread that around, you probably had better have the real facts instead of relying on someone who lost their job's point of view. (You can bet there was more to it.)What ever happened is between him and the employer, and there is no way you know what happened, except for what you 'heard' from the now angry ex-employee. As stated above, any employer, who puts up his money to start a business (and where do you think 'big companies' started...it was with one or two guys who had the guts to put up what little money they probably had, and with good business sense, and a lot of time they grew into a big company) has the right to do what he sees fit. If you don't like that the guy sweated with his own money in the beginning and grew into something big has the right to hire, fire, unionize or NOT unionize, then YOU start a company and work 18 hours a day to grow a company like he did. You're being naive if you think a non-union worker doesn't care about his job. And even more so, if you think a union worker cares MORE about HIS job.
Have a great day...I am heading off to my non-union job. I plan on working hard today, doing a good job, and I know that, because I do, I will be compensated for it. But, I also know that no one owes me anything, and there is no such thing as job security, so I don't take my job for granted.
I have a challenge for all the pro union workers out there who are adamantly against the "Right to Work" laws. As I read it, the law states you can't force workers to pay dues, but says nothing about donating your money to the beloved unions! Let's see how many will be willing to donate out of pocket and how many will not, but do the most complaining! If the unions are so vitale to your livelyhood, put your money where your mouth is. Otherwise, I don't believe we will be falling into potholes, unable to stop our vehicles w/o brakes, or unable to start our cars due to unions being unable to collect dues.
If you want to know the truth about what Gov. Daniels said about Right to Work in order to get union support read his signed letter. This letter from 2004, signed by then-candidate for Indiana governor Mitch Daniels, was released Wednesday by the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150.

I would post the letter but it is in PDF format & I can't get it to paste on the discussion board. Unfortunately the union believed him & gave him their support.
If the link isn't active copy & paste to your browser.
Excellent idea...give the unions your money if you want to...but don't force everybody to do it! Good idea, 5;09 a.m.!
O.K. folks lets skip the politics, there is nothing us poor folks can do except VOTE them all out. We ought to start organizing on Mr. Tom Berg,he is an interesting import to Starke County, I think he is trying for Hollywood or the Letterman show. Support him, listen to him and call him and ask for money to monitor his newest idea!
To Jan 12 4:55am; I DO know the person who was treated unfairly. It is a relative and they were NOT fired, only demoted and pay cut. They were a loyal employee, never missed work and worked overtime when asked. They were sent to school to do their job and did their job well until a nicer looking woman came on the scene. Yes it is a serious charge, but a true one. Had there been a union, this would not have been allowed to happen. She worked there 25 years. It wasn't like she could go somewhere else and get a job, because there aren't any!!!!! I agree that someone who has a business has the right to do as they please, but would you work for someone like this????
why is right to work bill over 100 pages if it only allows union people not to pay union dews, 1 page could state that.
Thurs evening, 7pm, pickin my kid up from practice...& it's slick as snot out. Toto Rd., solid ice, w/ a car slid off & an officer tryin to keep passer-by's cautious as they get'em out. It was a dangerous situation, especially for the officer helping. But my question...WHY IS THERE NO COUNTY TRUCKS ON MAIN COUNTRY ROADS? We've had a great winter thus far, saved alotta taxpayer $$$ and should be well prepared for this arrival, yet..NOTHING. No salt, no sand at intersections...NOTHING. This has been forecast for days. I certainly hope they get out there and make roads safer for not only motorists, but for our emergency personal that can't sit at home & stay warm, & instead have to drive these roads to keep us safe. We do greatly appreciate our Plow Drivers, but their Supervisor seems to have dropped the ball on this one.
Once again another individual has taught others how to escape even when handcuffed, maybe it is time to add the weight of a ball and chain to the cuff, that should slow others until somebody says it is unfair. Maybe if the county would use the local inmates to clean up the trash on our county roads while dragging a ball and chain, they would just be too tired from all of the exercise of being productive people who were learning to obey the law and saved everybody lots of problems by staying out of trouble. It would be hard to escape and fewer guards would be needed. After all even inmates need fresh air and lots of exercise or they will get bored and cause more problems. Starke County's inmates are teaching other county's inmates how to cause problems!
1. i could care less if you are union or not.
2. your man mitch is NOT a politician, hes a bussinessman.
3. ask the ip&l guys in indy
4. the meek shall NOT inherit the earth because mitch will have it leased out or sold by then.
5. right to work= right to be replaced by a lower wage earner and theres nothing you can do about it because indianas labor laws are written on an etch a sketch
6. who cares about dem or rep? give me someone who says they are "none of the above" but can honestly say they are FOR THE PEOPLE and they wont win! for its the wallet and checkbook NOT the values and ideas of a person that wins elections.
7. why do we support aid arm and fund a country one decade and try our young men and womens best to oust what we created 10-20 years later ? ie iraq, afghanastan.
8. if we pretty much own one of the worlds largest oil producing countries then why is gas so much ? is there a perpetual hurricane over the refineries in the gulf ?
9. blah blah blah blah blibbity blah.
10. god bless starke county !!!!!
all the small town charm with the big city crime !
We need a "like" button on here! Ill start with comment january 11 4:56!
To driving Toto road. I was on Toto road at 7:00 pm and had no problem just had to slow down and drive for the conditions as is required by state law. Another thought put sand and salt down then it snows on top of it . How much good would this do. I here the highway is takeing application so if you know so much go apply for the job
January 12 8:56
I think you mean 'You COULDN'T care less'...saying "I COULD care less" means that you do, in fact care, but you could care LESS. But, if you had said, 'I COULDN'T care less', you would have meant that you ALREADY do not care at all.
The unions seem to be fairing not so well so far this year. Indiana is pushing "Right to Work", and the unions' beloved president has snubbed them in favor of the environmentalists over the Keystone pipeline. Maybe we'll see union bosses, stewards, and goons carrying cardboard signs at the mall saying "will gripe and complain for money"! We do however, lament for the worker, who is losing jobs over the pipeline decision by the potus, a sorry thankyou for supporting him.
Friday,Jan.13,2012,IT is officially
BLAME SOMEBODY ELSE DAY!
What an opportunity! The first voice over WKVI at 5 a.m.is to blame for our winter weather. Crime is caused by the poor, the rich should not fund the tax collectors, farmers are lowest level of independent workers, imports of foreign goods hurts America, everybody except the millionaires are just blame lazy, and the Democrates are responsible for the economy and the wars leftover from the Republican! Don't miss this annual opportunity to blame somebody or something today! God Bless all of you unfortunate people who must travel today, drive careful and pray as you drive slowly, snow, ice and the weather can not be controlled by us humans. Of course, Alaska has lots of snow if you want to share more of it.
January 13, 2012 4:44 AM
WOW ! Pathetic. You must be the bestest most awesomest super duper person to have ever walked the earth ! -Thank you for our daily grammar lesson-
here we go with the stupid grammar remarks. leave my grammar out of this, she was a fine woman.
Dear January 13, 2012 4:44 AM,
Party on Wayne ! Asphynkster says what ?
“Obama is truly a dark character from the Marxist-Mafia underworld – secret societies promoted him , are protecting and guiding this man to set in place a totalitarian rule in America, telling him what to say ……. And telling him what to do.” Trefez 2009
His latest demand for even greater powers demonstrates his vision of dictatorial status.
A quick financial fix for our country, stop the large tax returns. Americans should not receive thousands of dollars in tax refund money if you did not work or receive more than you paid into the IRS. We should stop paying Americans to live in our country or reward them for having more children than they can support.
“Rush Limbaugh is truly a dark character from the Teabag-Mafia underworld – secret societies promoted him , are protecting and guiding this man to set in place a totalitarian rule in America, telling him what to say ……. And telling him what to do.” Trefez 2009
His latest demand for even greater powers demonstrates his vision of dictatorial status.
Rod, Don't worry to much your in Knox now and a country boy can survive.
All who read this are now under our control. We have seized your computer and brains. We will now control all of your actions by inserting secret words into the media that will trigger the following actions.
When you hear the name Mitt Romney you will automatically check your shoulders for dandruff.
When you hear the name Barack Obama you will be compelled to visit the nearest tanning bed, for you are not truly a dark enough character.
When you hear the name Newt Gingrich spoken you shall feel the urge to consume hotdogs as fast as humanly possible, as if you were in a hotdog eating contest. For you must fatten yourself up to survive the long Marxist winter ahead.
When you hear a US postal commercial you will proceed directly to your mailbox and see if your monthly check has arrived.
When you hear the name Mitch Daniel you will be directed to steal from your neighbor to the north of your domain.
You will no longer spend your mornings listening to Glenn Beck. You will put down your 42 ounce bottle of Pabst Blue Ribbon and be a productive cultivator of the community garden.
You are now a member of our secrete society. You will promote and protect the president. You will guide this man to set in place a totalitarian rule in America and may the “Truth Be Known”
It finally happened, we have all just GOT to become REPUBLICANS,they are promising to get rid of the Internal Revenue Service, so no more taxes for us middle class/poor class either.
One even wants us back in Iraq, I wonder how the next Republican President will fund their next war maybe they will just drop an atom bomb on Iran just in case they hate us Americans, maybe the nation's top millionaires plan to finance the government and fund the next war that their leaders want to start. I have heard that the second Mrs. Bush has suggested that her brother-in=law Jeb Bush, former governor of Florida, run on the Republican ticket, we sure could use a third Bush. So Folks vote Republican, and save our nation a lot of problems with us less than rich folks and preserve the rich class in our society!
A LOT PEOPLE HAVE A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH THE LOCAL AND STATE LAWS.
maybe you all should:
Stop inhaling air that is poluted either by the cars, factories or livestock. If we stop driving cars to factories or farms,it would stop the need for a lot of energy that production needs. Farms came first, then factories built cars and before that America imported its population and drove the Native Americans off their own land, but now they can built places to take the stupid folks who do not have money for food but plenty to gamble and drink and smoke. Maybe that is justice Indian style today, if they just wait awhile the White Man will destroy himself in a nice legal way.
Ban Smoking in all places and let every store sell liquor even drug stores that sell medicine to dry out the drunks. And of course, now they want the right to sell it on Sunday too, why can't they stock up on Saturday or does the stores close after the supply is gone. Police would not have enough revenue without those who misuse the legal adult beverages regularly and liter the roadside with their empty cans and bottles! And the poor lawyers would not make much money if everybody obeyed the law, so vote against laws and let the old time justice return, if somebody killed somebody, you just hung them and partied under their body while the birds fed on the human remains! Even the BIBLE says, An Eye for an Eye, it does not say it is o.k. to kill another person even if society furnishes the liquor to do so, so why not let them smoke too. It is good to start them out young, so they learn out to teach their next generation! Or you could let them live in jails without airconditioning, indoor plumbing and internet--and take them for exercise regularly picking up the liquor bottles and cans while dragging a ball and chain, they would be a little too tired to create trouble from boredom. Somebody would protest the inhuman treatment of the inmates for sure! Then a nice lawyer will make enough money to take a round the world trip while he is still young and able to travel or he will just get HIMSElf elected to Congress!
I stopped on Saturday the 14th to help a young man who had fallen on Toto Rd and injured his ankle. I waited with him until his mother showed up. Does anyone know how he is doing. I did not get his name and I have been curious if he is okay.
Thank you for stopping to help a boy in need, there are lots of Starke County people who have helped me out just as an act of kindness. Once when I slide off the road on black ice, a nice young man stopped and drove my car out for me and once after an operation a nice neighbor man scooped off our doorstep--thank you, Rev. N.Fletcher, you are one of the finest men who lives your faith here in our county. There are more good people than bad who never make the news because live as God would have all of us live.
Don’t support Jackie Wolorski, The first time she ran against Joe Donnelly she proposed investing your social security fund in the stock market.
The working class pension funds have already been looted by wall street.
Scary thinking
Foolish Ideas
Working for the Fat-cats funding you?
Regarding your SS funds, Johnson opened the lock box in the 60's to give congress unfetered access to your future, followed by Carter in the 70's to support undocumented aliens with your money! It has been a continual rape of the SS funds since, so don't blame Jackie!
We as Starke County Citizens should be embarassed as to how our State Re( oops mean the unions Rep) is acting union membership is less than 10% in this conty but she probally gets over 50 % of donations from the unions, so if they refush the will of the majority of people as well as disregard the duty that they were sworn to it is time to change the Constituition to all recall elections and throw them out, I am disgusted as a Taxpayer to held hostage by this.
job? whats a job? like fighting over bigfoot. if a bigfoot is ever spotted they will just kill it or send it to china (bigfoot=Jobs) so run bigfoot run, come hide in starke county you wont be found here, (bigfoot=jobs).
Anyone notice how many more comments there are on here once the weather gets cold. Perhaps you should all take up knitting.
So why aren't you knitting, if you want us to do so! You enjoy whining about the rest of us with worthwhile thoughts! We could all use new knitted caps and gloves, when and where will you deliver them! Soon I hope while the cold air is with us! I suppose there is lots of hot air where you sit and knit!!!
Make matching red, white and blue knitted hats and gloves, thank you kindly.......
Dang Anonymous 1/17/12 @ 1:41! Angry much? First of all, I have knitted today. Secondly, I never said anything about whining, those are your words. Third, why would I knit you anything? I work on making things for people I care about not angry people on the internet who are so very easily offended. I just don't understand your tirade.
BTW, I think you asked me a question, but since there was no question mark I'm not sure. I am also wondering if you are aware that there are other forms of punctuation other than an exclamation mark?
DID ANYONE READ THE STORY OF THE RED CROSS? THEY WERE FINED ALOT OF MONEY FROM THE FDA FOR POORLY TRAINED STAFF AND OTHER NONCOMPLIANT PROCESSES.
Well, pardon me, you tell the rest of us to get off this site, and when we reply, you get very upset, why? Sorry if responding to your tirade required so much anger! Nobody would want to make you that upset, relax and stop taking every thing too seriously.
The sign up for next election has been done and we need to consider some of the people that have signed, do we really want some of them back in any office that effect the taxpayers? When we vote be sure to consider replacing some of them. We need new people in there to do their job and not accuse people of miss deeds when those elected people have been proven wrong. Think carefully about your vote next election.
Voting is our best way to change what we do not agree with and during the last election people just refused to vote because of the president's race. What is not shown is his white relatives, but at least one person believed internet stories and she threw away her right. Many men and women of all faiths, races and heritages have fought and died to give us the right to vote. You dishonor their life by not voting. How can you complain about the laws, if you do not vote, sometimes one vote can get a good person elected. If you are disappointed by those you elect, then vote against them the next election. Women in American got the right to vote in 1920,women is some places still do not get to vote!
Worthwhile thoughts, worthwhile thoughts. You got to be joking. Most the people on here don't know what they're talking about, and the other half can't put a coherent sentence together.
VOTE NO On O-D tax referendum lets get the ball rolling right now to much taxation as it is!!!! to bad we would not have had a chance to vote on the library bond as well.
The library bond did not raise your taxes. Please do some research before you speak.
In Ref to the LIBRARY BOND well that is not exactly true because if it would have not been approved it would have lowered them, you might need to do some research!!!
Seven Dangers to human virtue.
1.) Wealth without work
2.) Pleasure without conscience
3.) Knowledge without character
4.) Business without ethics
5.) Science without humanity
6.) Religion without sacrifice
7.) Politics without principal
Don’t question my right to own a gun and I won’t question your stupidity not to.
If I were queen....we would have a prison farm, hard labor work...for anyone incarcerated in our county jail. From 6 AM until guards discretion. No TV, no cell phones...and visitors would be an earned privilege/reward...no fancy meals...just cold cereal for breakfast, pbj for lunch and dogs/burgers for dinner....they would not need an exercise area if the had farms...they could be utilized to keep our county clean...
Here at the Leader we are wanting to know if anyone in Starke County has a pet Groundhog? If you do, Please call 800-933-0356 ex. 134 or email class@thepilotnews.com
Taxes staying the same is not raising taxes. I'm sorry that you have a problem with semantics.
oh Newt you bad boy
write to work is the worst legislation to ever be written.Repubs should be ashamed
Right to work doesn't mean more jobs.It doesn't mean that all these jobs will just appear. Are there more state jobs now, since state jobs are basically right to work already. Let's face it,it's just a union busting tactic.Although I guess a lower paying job, with terrible benefits, where you're at the mercy of your employer is better than no job at all. Which is what will happen without unions to protect people.
Well said, Clark Starke !!!! Nice to see someone else agrees with me. Go BOY !
the right to work bill means just that . Your employer has the right to work you as hard as they want pay you what then want and get rid of you when the want. The have the right to have poor safty no benifits or retirement. The employeer does have the right to make a larger profit on the back of under payed workers. this is big bussiness 101.
Now that the Colts have fired their head coach they should give the job to Payton Manning
It would appear that many are listening to the whine of B Patrick Bauer, lamenting the impending loss of his union stipends with the eventual passage of RTW! He would have you believe that life as you know it will end, when in fact, all that will happen is more money in your pocket, and the union goons off your back! Take the time the research the job market and economic stability of states with RTW, compared to non RTW states. You have the right to work without paying a union for the privilege, but you can always donate to them if you wish. Unions don't speak for the worker anymore, that ended with Hoffa, they speak for the benefit of the unions and the criminal enterprises that control them.
Thank you Nancy for standing up for the working class not the upper class. the right to work bill is wrong on so many levels it is a terrible bill and will further destroy america .Repubs will not be happy untill working class pays all taxes and makes only minnum wage. thanks for taking high road Nancy Jim Hudgens
WOW SOUNDS LIKE WHATS HAPPENING IN HEALTH CARE RIGHT NOW. LESS PAY WORK HARDER/FASTER FEWER STAFF. ITS A MCDONALDS MENTALITY
I don't know about a groundhog,but I have a pet badger named Rufus Milsap.
I wonder if Americans are aware that there is no such thing as a "stand-alone" bill. Meaning that all bills have items referred to as "pork" attached to them. These are other parts attached to a bill that we never hear of untill it is passed. Maby, just maby, there is more to the "right to work" bill than we are being told of. As of yet, the ENTIRE bill has not been made public. I said the ENTIRE BILL. Not just the points of major debate. I also think the "right to work" bill is not necessary and is simply for the employers. However, I think there is much more to the bill that would take much of the attention away from that issue. At any rate, the fact that our ELECTED officials are once again playing hide-and-seek is rediculous. Why would they not report to the positions they were SWORN to uphold and debate/vote on the issues at hand. Leaving their positions vacant only slows other state legislation and shifts the focus away from other important issues such as education, taxes, fuel prices, ect... As for the imposed "fine" they are responsible for.... If it actually came out of their own pockets maby it would make a difference. Instead, it is taken out of a "fund" that was set up just for this type of action. I know this due to the fact that I once worked for one of these "representatives" and had access to this imformation.
No matter what the issue. These ELECTED "officials" should be in the office they were SWORN to hold and continue to preform the duties they PROMISED the people they would do. Remember, it is not just the "right ro work" bill/issue that is being delayed.
CORRECTION.
In my post, I meant to say I know someone that had access to the imformation concerning the fund that pays the imposed fine. I personally have not worked for any political party.
A number of states have been passing right to work bills. It's not union busting, it's helping create jobs. Go to work Nancy and do your job. It's our right to have you at work. If you want to join and union then do it, but don't make me join if I don't want to.
Re: New Jail
Has anyone considered converting what would be the old jail to a Juvenile Justice Center? That would create income, as several surrounding counties could send their juveniles here rather than Muncie. Starke County might also save money in not sending our kids to Muncie. It would create jobs through staffing and could run as a profit center for the county. Knowing that we had somewhere to refer truancies, troublemakers, etc. might also be a deterrent.
Could be a real win/win.
To New Jail Post. You can not just take the inmates out of the jail and put jueviles in. There would have to be a reovation of the old jail first (how much would that cost and who will pay for it). Second. Most the large counties around already have juvenile centers so where are you going to get the kids to put in it other the Starke co .

First President to go on 17 lavish vacations, including date nights and Wednesday evening White House parties for his friends; paid for by the taxpayer.
First President to have 22 personal servants (taxpayer funded) for his wife.
First President to keep a dog trainer on retainer for $102,000 a year at taxpayer expense.
First President to repeat the Holy Qur'an and tell us the Islamic call to worship is the most beautiful sound on earth.
First President able to break all these laws, be openly corrupt and get by with treason.
welcome to starke county where a new jail is called economic growth. didnt think a snow job was a real job, i stand corrected.
Rod, you seem to be doing an awful lot of complaining. There is a seat in Congress up for election this year, why aren't you running? It is easy to find "facts" on the internet and to keep posting them on a message board. I suggested once that you go start a blog where people who want to hear what you have to say can read it instead of spamming message boards. Now I am suggesting that you put your hat in the ring for office if you can do things better. Be the change you want to see, not a loud obnoxious voice claiming to know all the truths for behind your computer.
Rod, Rush Limbaugh again?
How is the right to work law creating jobs???? As for Nancy and the other Dems not going to work, what's the point, when the Republicans are just going to pass the law anyway since they dominate the house. I agree with the Democrats. It needs to go on the Ballot and let the people vote on it!!!!
Kate, your charge of complaining is baseless, I simply post facts. Further you should have responded read what I have written not hear what I have to say and spam is typically defined as unsolicited advertisement email. And what do you mean by for behind my computer? You are, just as I am, free to post and read what you want. Seems my last post might have struck a sour note for you. Sorry.
I am thinking you should put your hat in the ring as it appears by the tone of your comments that you consider yourself much wiser than I. Yes, there is much information on the net that is deliberately ignored by main stream media but few have the mettle to ferret it out. Sadly, John Q. Public tends to let main stream media do their thinking for them or worse yet one of the two corrupt political parties and that is how we arrived at this crucial intersection in the history of our country. And believe me when I tell you that the 2012 elections will either make or break the back of freedom as we once knew it.
How is it we are paying taxes for plowing the county roads that look like they have never been touched?
Rod,Post something positive about Barack Obama.
Rod,Seem like you have a point. Main Street Media doesn't pick up on a lot and people aren't able to judge for themselves or find the true facts and become informed. A lot of people also are mislead by only listening to conservative radio propaganda or only forming an opinion based upon what there preacher tells them the facts are.
Hopefully the American people can form a logical conclusion or at least be willing to work together and keep all radical prospects from developing.
God Bless the USA
Maybe I'm not smart, but how does not paying union dues create jobs?
heres the thing......right to work wont make any jobs but what it will do is give employees the option to decline joining a union in what is a union shop. in doing so you basically leave your options up to the employer who lets face it isnt out to make you any more money than they have to, and for the ones that continue to support the union they are members of will basically be pushed out of thier job or submit to the will of the employer also because a strike will not effect anything because all the employer has to do is replace the striking workforce with non union and say see ya later. things is...the governor and his bunch are all about big bussiness and screw the little guy which is why the rtw will never get the possibility to be voted on by the common person which is one of the reasons the dems are protesting it, or running, hiding or whatever the rest of you that cant see the forest from the trees wants to call it. if you truely think "our man" is out for anybody other than "our man" you, dem or rep are sadly mistaken....just ask the guys down at ip&l !
ok, I am POSITIVE he is a one termer.
JANUARY 20, 2012 2:12 PM
You sound really creepy
What prospective employer would want to move into a state where union goons decide who he is going to pay, how much, and for what? Why would a prospective employer knowingly pay a wage to union hacks knowing funds provided by him are going formulate rules and regs to destroy him? What prospective employer is willing to turn over operations of his company, with no say over promotions within that company, to a criminal syndicate? What prospective employer would want to move his company to a state like Illinois and pay exorbatant taxes with insufferagle regs by union picked and payed for corrupt politicians? Your right, why would anyone vote for a Right to Work state?
Rod,I found the facts about the President very interesting. This is something you will not be hearing from the media. And yes, scary reading this and thinking this is our Leader?
Question: What gives that criminal enterprise in the white house the power to turn down the Keystone pipeline? Answer: NOTHING! He does not have the Constitutional power to do anymore than make suggestions! Only congress can make these decisions using the commerce clause or treaty powers. The president and the secretary of state are overstepping there boundries, as usual, and denying this nation energy and security! John Boehner and Mitch McConnell know this, and are allowing it, as usual! Makes one wonder what this is actually all about, and as money is usually the bottom line............I'm just saying.
Limbaugh is little more than a comedic entertainer and let me assure you neither he nor any of the other right or left leaning, high profile political pundits are listened to read or watched by yours truly. If by chance some of my postings happen to coincide with their dialogs it is purely coincidental. Apparently there are more than a few who do follow those folks as they are referenced here quite often.
About BHO, I must concede the President is indeed a gifted and effective speechmaker, very eloquent, articulate and well informed. That said it would be prudent to look beyond that façade to gain understanding of where he is leading those who blindly follow.
Jan 20th,8:39pm,Thank You for admitting that RTW is meant to put an end to those big bad unions.Let me see,now I won't have to pay union dues.So that would give me on average an extra 100 dollars a month. Sounds good right. Sure sign me up,an extra 100 bucks a month is worth it to be at the mercy of some fat cat CEO.
Why would a union want to "destroy" a company, since that is where their money is coming from right? I didn't know that unions controlled how much taxes a company has to pay. Wow,I didn't know that unions were more powerful than the Gov't.
As for me I say "GOOD JOB NANCY" its very refreshing to have a representitive finaly doing what is best for and what the majority of your district wants you to do for us or on our behalf. I hope you will continue to stay out of the house or whatever it takes to keep right to work from passing. Im so very tired of the Republicans pasing things that only benefit the wealthy and going against the President and the people of the state and United States as well. Elected officials work for the people its time they started doing just that. KUDOS Nancy!
This county has had these same old problems with the jail for years and only now that they are being sued is anyone worried about it and I wont be voting for any of the current county commissioners as they come up for re election if my taxes go up property taxes or income tax they ned to find another way to pay for this this county is small with alot of us unemployed so we struggle to pay house payments or rent and now were to be expected to pay for criminals to have a nicer place to stay than some of us have. NO WAY! Kathy Norem especially needs to go with Fingerhut right behind her!
You might get that extra $100 that you paid in union dues back, but your insurance premiums are going to increase far more than $100 a month if you no longer have your benefits from the union. Your deductibles will be higher and your dental benefits will likely not be there. Eye care??? Maybe but highly unlikely. I'll stick with the union benefits if I have a choice and would willingly continue to pay the dues!
And how many of those non-union jobs offer anything that even starts to resemble a pension? I realize no pensions are guaranteed anymore, but without the union it is pretty certain you won't have one.
I know my 401K has been shrinking by the day, and my husband's union pension still arrives each month on time.
Rod as a former union member you Know that being Organized as employee helps the family. Please speak on behalf of the working mans cause.
The auto companies always say the reason cars cost so much is union wages for the workers. So if RTW goes through, the cost of vehicles should go down right??? Yeah right, just like it will create new jobs.
RTW isn't meant to get rid of unions overnight. It's meant to phase them out slowly over the next 20-30yrs. Make no mistake about it though it's a deal to bust unions.
Great Girls & Boys game @ Knox against the Bluejays tonight. Girls fought valliantly & pulled out a great win, and our boys fought hard, kept Judson on the ropes & lost a close game to a very good team. Very proud of both Knox teams. Great job & keep fighting on!
Rick Santorum is against the RTW bill, and would love to see him & Ron Paul on the Rep. ticket. Regardless, I hope people of all parties can see what future Obama has jeopardized for our children, and unite to vote him out. But I don't see Gingrich as a viable option. He strikes me as a "Bush War-monger".
RTW is not meant to be a union buster, but it will put unions in their place. No plant owner wants a union dictating more regulations and rules. Learning how capitalism works is a good start to learning how unions disrupt a free market system. By all means, donate your dues to the unions to keep your union insurances and perks, just don't force me to give a part of my wage to support idealogs and corrupt politicians.
The GOP presidential nominee field is so lacking in moral character. Hopefully the American voters have had their fill of banking and Wall Street deregulation, also big spending deficits imposed by the Bush administration that has led us down this road of economic turmoil.
Finally it appears we are on our way out of this mess. Lets not put the same people back in office that have no regard for the middle class.
I too attended the Knox versus North Judson basketball games. While the games were great, I would like to ask the Knox school administration how it is that they feel comfortable with the Knox boys team not being on the floor for the National Anthem. This has been a recurring theme with them, and I can't think of anything more disrespectful. If it were not for the many in attendance that fought for their country there wouldn't be any Knox high school or basketball team. I can't understand how the administration allows this. Apparently the coach feels that his extra 2 minutes in the locker room is more important than having the kids on the floor honoring our country. From looking at his win/loss record, it isn't working, so why not let the kids at least show respect for our country!
How soon some forget!!! In 2005, the Bush admin attempted to regulate Fannie and Freddie, but were blocked by the likes of Barney Franks and Chris Dodd and then Sen obmana. The result was the final straw that brought about the financial crisis we suffer with. And who benefitted from allowing Fannie and Freddie to operate unabated: Barney Franks, Chris Dodd, and then Sen obama, who were recepients of huge amounts of "political" funds, while Fannie and Freddie heads, Raines and Jones, cooked the books paying themselves huge bonuses! Yep, tell me about the morals of the Republican candidates, which can never match the desecreation of this country by the democrats!
I think if someone doesn't pay union dues then they shouldn't be allowed all the same wages and "perks" as you call it,and union insurance. They should get what the plant owner decides is fair. Then once he's hired enough people to phase out the union he can give YOU the benefits and pay he decides. It will be too late, but you'll be begging for a union again. "Gimme a little extra now, take alot later". Some people just don't understand. So sad.
people always say,"if you didnt vote then dont complain". but what the people saying that dont realize or cant conceive is that maybe the people that didnt vote didnt want to choose the rock or the hard place. why not be able to have canidates from any party be on a ballot ? instead we only get to choose the crooked or the crooked.
on tv this morning about the auto show said, cut auto wages by 50% price of new car only goes down $500
plenty of jobs opens, dont need to be qualified, you can sign up to run for several different jobs at the starke county courthouse.
We're seeing some fear tactics here that are particular to a certain party. There is more going on than what happened in the distant past, and what "might" go wrong in the future. Better to look to the states that are RTW states, lower unemployment is the thing that sticks out here, with no losses of wages or benefits. Problem being the truth does not always win out, lies and negativity are so much easier to believe. Look at the condition of this nation at present, a good example of lies, fear tactics, and a whole bunch of negativity!
DEDICATED TO THE WRITER OF THE FIRST PRESIDENT EPIC.
WHO DECLARED WAR TO GET EVEN FOR THEM TRYING TO KILL HIS DADDY?
If you was alive during the previous president's 8 yrs., do you remember the his very well broadcast remarks.
Who was the first president who had to duck the shoe in a foreign land?
Who declared the next prsident would have to end the war? Our soldiers have left Iraq, but over 2000 died there while the previous war making leader was in charge.
What president failed to get rid of the terrorist who created 911?
Who failed to detect and therefore prevent the 911?
What president had to go to the Supreme Court to get a win in the state of Florida to win the election?
What president barely made it through college even with lots of money?
What president had a drinking problem before he became president?
There are more interesting facts including the fact that the previous president inherited a balanced budget but left us in debt to finance his wars based on false information.
Those who live in Glass Houses should not cast stones if their opinions are simply their right to express their opinion. Let hope they are not armed with guns to take aim at those of a different opinion. If one does, there is the Starke County Jail just waiting for them, it is a bit crowded but that makes for a warm relationships and a chance to make new friends. Birds of a feather flock together, it should apply to jailbirds too, at least it will be warm there this winter or you can just sue the commissioners!
To Jan,22 2012 7:45am. How tricky of you to attack the Knox basketball record, by commenting on the lack of players on the floor during the National Anthem!!!! Perhaps they should be out there, but while we are picking how about the sportmanship of the blue jay mascot????? That person shouldn't have been on the floor at all!!!

I will be very honest with you about my life experience with unions. During my late teens and early twenties I was a member of USW for a few years then during my mid thirties I belonged to the CWA for a few years. While a union member I received good pay and benefits but in order to better myself I had to bid on an opening in a higher classification which was almost impossible to accomplish because if there was another person with more seniority or a minority bidding on the same opening and even if I was more qualified they would get the job before me.
I also witnessed the union protect people who could not perform their jobs in an acceptable manner while other union members would have to pick up their slack. Many members found this demoralizing. How would you feel if you could accomplish twice as much, twice as good as another and he received the same pay as you?
In both cases (USW and CWA) after I made the transition to management my salary and benefits were commensurate with my ability and contribution to the corporation and their bottom line, in other words raises were qualified by merit not a time dependent pay scale.
With respect to RTW, imagine you were starting a business and had to hire someone to help you grow the business. If the person performed acceptably and the business grew you wouldn’t want to let him go you would pay him more to keep him and search for another like him to grow the business even further. However if the second person came to work late and couldn’t perform his duties, then expected a raise what would you do? If a union was involved according to my experience the two workers would go out on strike if you didn’t keep the second employee and give him a raise. A classic catch 22.
I firmly believe that if anyone is a dependable hard worker with a positive attitude an employer will take care of you, whether it is a union shop or not, by providing competitive wages and benefits. It only makes good business sense to do so. If an employer does otherwise he will not be able to keep good help and the quality of his product will suffer eventually leading to insolvency.
Did you know the average federal employee earns 57 percent more in salary and 85 percent more in total compensation, including benefits, than the average private-sector worker?
Low Morale Character????? You REALLY need to research Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney or Ron Paul, as these are all stand up, family men who've accomplished far more than Obama ever imagined before becoming President. The problem is that Obama came along when the country was so fed up with Bush & his deceit, that O was a shoe-in. He's trying to please everyone with handouts, giving unlimited Unemployment Checks(as I know many who don't want a job since they can draw for eternity), and dividing the country to gain minority votes. Fact is, he has NO CLUE how businesses run. He gives Billions to Solyndra & similar companies, receives much of it back for the re-election campaign, & the companies file bankruptcy. Obama fed Fast-n-Furious, with Hillary's help, to push for weapon's ban. Through the UN they're undermining our Constitution. Yes, the Bush family was TERRIBLE for America, but Obama is bent on driving this country 6 feet under. So PLEASE research ALL the candidates & make the best choice for our country & children's future...because if Obama gets re-elected..our debt will be insurmountable and our country lost, for Obama's main supporter, George Soros, wants nothing more than to see our economy collapse.
Would you please stop running that add that bashes Nancy Dembowski!!She is only standing up for most of the people she represents. This right to work bill is nothing more than a way to dissolve the unions. Why don't they put this on the voting machine to really see how the people of indiana feel!!!
The democrats, not able to get their way in the legislature, have stooped to going to the courts, hoping to find a sympathetic liberal judge more than willing to legislate from the bench! In the meantime, they're still trying to get a public referendum on the RTW initiative. This is like playing mommy against daddy if you can't get your way. Is it too much for the public to ask for the elected politicians to act as responsible adults, follow the rules. Everyone knows that from time to time you have to take your licks, you simply can't win every time! But with a liberals line of thought, maybe we should expect the 49'ers and Ravens to appear in court this morning in an attempt to overturn yesterdays results in their favor!! Don't laugh, this might work if they can get in front of the 9th circus court of appeals in San Francisco!!!
this might clear up some questions on Right TO Work. It doent mean you have to work just means you have the right to work. If you have a fake back pain, you can continue your fraud, you dont have to work. Your check will keep coming, you kids will have free lunch, breafast, books. That way you and your family can still have your 6 Iphones, 80 in tv, dish hanging on the side of your rent subsidized home, with your free heat. be careful not to drop your food stamps on your way into the dr office for your free health care.
Call it a threat or promise. A letter sent out by the IBEW #725 in Terre Haute to some southwestern Indiana charities and other not-for-profit organizations is asking them to either write letters to Indiana lawmakers in opposition to “right to work” legislation or never ask again for donations, sponsorships, or services from the union hall.
In the letter dated on January 13, IBEW #725 Business Manager R. Todd Thacker asks recipients to write letters to members of the Indiana House and Senate to reject the bill because it would lower the wages of both union and non-union workers. However the letter also states…
"If you feel you cannot send a support letter because you have a philosophical difference, please send me a letter explaining why. Unlike legislators trying to push this bill through we want to hear everyone’s opinion on Right to Work for Less, as we have found a majority of Indiana workers and Indiana legislators do not understand the bill.
If you feel you cannot do this because you have a philosophical difference, please refrain from requesting any future donations, sponsorships, or services from the union hall as we will have limited funds to pass on to our community. Please do not perceive this as a threat, it is just the prudent thing to do with our member’s money."
Rod, you summed it up when you stated.
"Did you know the average federal employee earns 57 percent more in salary and 85 percent more in total compensation, including benefits, than the average private-sector worker?"
People in the working sector are desperate to earn a living wage.
The RTW states are Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming.
Most statistics taken from portions of “ Effects of RTW Laws on Employees, Unions & Businesses” by John W. Cooper
Right to Work/ NON- Right to Work
Union is generally required to represent employee.............. yes........ /......Yes
Employee is bound by union contract ..Yes ....../........Yes
Union is the employee’s exclusive bargaining agent.................. Yes......./........Yes
Employee is required to join union or pay union dues............... No......./........ Yes
It would seem that the union workers foot the bill & non union workers get the free benefits.
BUT eventually all workers will suffer from lower wages & less benefits.
Opponents of RTW like to point out that the average wage in RTW states is lower than
the average wage in non-RTW states. For example, on the issue section of AFL-CIO’s website,
they cite the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2001: “The average worker in a ‘right to work’ state
earns about $5,333 less a year than workers in other states” (“RTW States Are”). Proponents of
RTW do not dispute the above statistic, but suggest that the statistic is overly simplistic,
manipulative and misleading.
Proponents of RTW states use an example of (2) two towns & the 4.5 total employees making a total of
$17.00 an hour. One new hire, one experienced worker & one manager, but suggest that the
statistics of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2001 is overly simplistic, manipulative and misleading?
I stopped reading the article after reading the following Paragraph.
Lawrence Mishel, president of the Economic Policy Institute, completed a study in 2001
which found that the mean nominal “effect of working in a right-to-work state results in a 6% to
8% reduction in wages” with the average reduction being 6.5%, and that even after controlling
for cost of living differences, there is still a 3.8% wage penalty for living in a RTW state (Mishel).
Mishel’s study was based on a sample of approximately 150,000 salaried workers
between the ages of 18-64, with average hourly wages of $15.54 and median hourly wages of
$12.25 (Mishel). What made this analysis unique is that it used a regression model to pair and
then compare the wages earned by similarly situated workers in RTW and non-RTW states. The
study used the workers’ industry, occupation, and demographic information to group workers
into comparable groups.

Yes we do need to get rid of the fake back pain recipients but we also need jobs that can support families.
The rich have moved all of their assets and they hide their profits paying minimal taxes. They have moved good American jobs many union positions abroad for cheap labor. And now you think people that have been thrown into this jobless mess should do what? Starve maybe.
The rich don't want to create jobs here.
Our country was the greatest in the world for decades when employers rewarded their workers with a proportionate percentage of their profits. Now greed rules and the working class is desperate.
A threat or a promise?
If I was supporting a charity & they didn't support a cause that would help me to help their cause then I certainly would, out of courtesy, inform them of my situation & reason for discontinuing my support for their cause. If I felt they could help me to help them then I would definitely let them know what would help me. I'm sure the charities need to know of a reduction in funds as soon as possible.
Sounds like the basketball coach is like the football coach. He won't let the band practice on the field as they might tear up HIS field
How come none of our representatives are representing us? They need to listen to the people, as we are the ones who put them where they are!! I guess they will say whatever it takes to get them elected, and then forget the true wishes of the people who elected them.
