I really enjoyed the Regaining Honor gathering at the Lincoln Mem Mall. It epitomizes the cause of all America's problems, starting with taking the Bible out of public schools in 1962. Immediately upon that, teen preg, drugs, crime, drop-out rates all sky rocketed. And in many ways the lack of that foundation is reflective on society today. And also with Welfare, for it rewards broken families. The Gov't & people are looking for answers, but, as with a long trip, going backwards is necessary when your going the wrong way. But Glenn Beck's message of FAITH, HOPE & CHARITY are what we all must pray for, on our knees, for the sake of our children & our future. And it starts with each & EVERY one of us. So PLEASE, everyone have Faith in believing what we WILL become, Hope in our future, our youth & our fellow people, and Charity in helping in ANY way you can. And re-establish TRUST in people, see the best in each other. That includes our Gov't. See the positive, pray for them, have Faith in them. For we can not harbor HATE, for there's more than enough in this world. So in performing Faith, Hope & Charity while praying, we WILL see GOD pour mercy & blessings over America again. So lift each other up America, for our future & children are depending on it.
did I read something here about a meth lad bust in hamlet anyone know anything about it.
But Glenn Beck's message of FAITH, HOPE & CHARITY that is the real important issue !!!
I was wondering if anyone knows what is going up on highway 30 just west of the truck stop????
I believe it is a gun shop hurray for the 2nd amemdment
I didnt hear any political ads this morning. I'm lovin it. Did they all run out of money at the same time?
one of my freinds motorcycle got stolen from the down under in hamlet but since the officer reporting the accident is (freinds) with the girl that stole it not report or nothing is done about it I know that the prosecuter has been contacted but they have no report go figure typical starke county politics not what happen but who you know Or in a nice way are with
I heard the truckstop bought the property and is making it into a bar, but not sure.
If that idiot that calls himself glen beck had one ounce of brains he would leave the world alone, find hisself a real job and stop complaining, the world and its problems are going to do whatever it is going to do. If people like him would stay out of politics everything probably bwould be less confusing. Read up on the man 7 to 8 years ago he was for the totally opposite.
We are liking the live streeming and not haveing to listen to the drumbeat of political ads in the morning. You rock wKvI. You care about the listeners more than making money. But we still need more music and less comercials. Just charge them more for the comercials and you get your money and we get music. Just sayin.
Negative glen Beck comment....
I do not care for glen beck However, he is allowed to change his mind as he sees fit just like you and I. You dont know his circumstances. You may not like what he says but the same system that allows you to say what you did about him allows him that right as well. This country is based on the difference of opinion! If you really dont like it then reread your comment and see how communist it sounds!
I 100% agree with Glenn Beck, and it we all worked on those 3 qualities he emphasized, it would definitely be a better world.
Another jail issue...
How is it that an inmate can escape the police from the hospital get captured and taken back to jail and then escape from the jail again.
Why wasn't the community informed that someone had escaped so my kids would not have been out in the streets playing and then in harms way. Someone needs to answer.
What's the deal? It's was 6:00 Sunday morning and listening to WKVI, the "Acuweather" forcast said it was going to be "Hot and Humid, high of 94 today and a high of 96 tomorrow with a chance of a couple of late thunderstorms." I started to work on canceling plans because that would be too hot for a number of people. Good thing I thought to check online because it says only a high today of 77. Someone sure goofed somewhere.
i heard about the jail escape sev eral times on wkvi saturday afternoon, wkvi coverage and warning was fine.
has he been caught yet.
the sheriff and county commissioners are who needs to answer for this.
if the jail was a factory these managers would be fired now.
I'm certainly hoping the Commissioners see the wisdom of accepting the extremely generous offer from the person offering 128 acres of land to the County. Looking at the photo of the land I suspect it is mainly woodland and grass areas and the amount of property taxes generated by that parcel is miminal compared to the value of a future recreational area for future generations. It isn't that the County needs to do anything with the land until the owner moves or passes on. Parks and recreational areas contribute to the quality of life in our area and an offer like this does not come along often.
Ok a little deduction in the property tax here and then there, it all adds up what about the upkeep insurance etc. The glove factory is a pretty good example. that has worked out well.
Rodney Craft escaped from the starke county jail but IS NOT DANGEROUS....The Jailers and Police officers are the ones who make dangerous situations in Starke county!!!!! There is something in the jail so OUT OF CONTROL that the state police have to come in and investigate on a regular basis!
Were was the jailer, when Rodney escaped?
Great Video!!!!!
how about a mobile page like to read when not at a computer
Wonder how long it will be before the people who made the you tube video of welcome to Knox decide they better get out of town , they were very dis-respectable to a lot of people in the county. If it was not for the corn and beans they would not eat . They and others see it to be funny well I believe that a lot of good people in the town see it otherwise. For all those that see humor in it you need to grow up .
That is the trouble in this town to many want to do things like this that takes very little effort as to work and help out in the city of Knox , it you dont like the way it is maybe you should put forth your energy that it took to make this video and see what you can do to improve the city instead of your childish acts of discrimination to others. Some are not as fortunate to live in better homes and run successful businesses.
re: the Welcome to Knox Video.
I personally do not think that this is funny at all.
I only looked at the first minute or so of it and I shut it off. You will find many situations with people like these kinds of people in this video, in many towns and regions of the USA.
I don't think that people should use this kind of video to degrade Knox. In my years at The Leader and WKVI Radio I worked with many hard working, industrious and brilliant people. Knox and Starke County is an area full of wonderful, great people. I am proud to be from Knox.
Visit the Starke County Fair during the summer and see the hours of dedication that people like Mabel Paul and others on the fair board put in during that week. Tony Radeciwiecz and all the friends of the park who tirelessly put on the Harvest Festival each year. Irene Szcony and the people who take care of the Starke County Youth Club. The volunteers in the hospital and nursing homes, the Pop-Werner and Striper League Football volunteers, the park board...the school pta groups. NOT TO MENTION all the workers in the ministries at the various churches in the county...week after week, doing what is expected of them with no applause or adulation. This is what I think of when I think of Knox.
Take a trip to the cities and sit in the parking lot of the super stores.... there are less-than impressive people everywhere.
Whoever put this video on of Knox should consider leaving, if he or she thinks it is such a bad place.
I don't think this should be passed on...it should be taken offline.
My thoughts.
Rich Wallen
Apparently you folks complaining about the Welcome to Knox U-Tube video have no sense of humor. There is a disclaimer at the end that it was all in fun...maybe not worded exactly that way, but there was a comment that indicated it was not to be taken seriously. Starke County has its good points, but you do have to wonder when you repeatedly find meth labs dumped in your property, houses burning repeatedly in the same one-mile stretch of road...actually within a couple hundred yards of each other, sheds blowing up, etc. I have lived in this mile of road for about 15 years and am to the point when I am no longer surprised by ashes in my driveway from yet another house fire. How come the one Saturday night didn't make your news stories?? Was it arson? Inquiring minds would love to know. Oh...and trash pickup...we do that repeatedly throughout the year because people around here are such pigs that they teach their children to throw their McDonald's wrappers, etc. out along the road along with so many other things. Maybe you need to travel around Knox and see the other side...it's here too.
In response to the person who wrote that people around are pigs and teach their children to throw out garbage along the road. You obviously haven't driven the back roads of neighboring counties, or you would have noticed they also have their share of garbage throwers!!!!
in response to the knox you tube .look at the girl in the video and think about her family and what they have did to make knox a better city... I am proud to live and work here and this is my home!!! make a video of the good things here!!!!!look around there is alot of GOOD!!!!!
To the person that posted the comment about the girl in the video. If it wasn't for what her family does for a living you would'nt have your corn and beans!!!!! And I don't recall any part of the video that said there wasn't any GOOD in the city. People need the not take this so personal.I bet the same people that didn't like have watched the popular show that was out in the 70's Hee Haw!!! or go to a comedy club!!! Or told a Racial or a hillbilly joke!!!
This "little" video has caused quite a commotion! C'mon people, LIGHTEN UP! The same people bashing those kids are the same ones that poke fun at homosexuals, people of different race/ethnicity, people of diffeerent size. A group of kids (whom I personally know, which are good kids) make a video about little ol' knox...And suddenly all the "righteous, proud citizens" want to make their voice heard? Where are your voices when your/the communities CHILDREN are out partying, drinking, being promiscuous? Where are your voices when another person overdoses? Where are your voices when another teenager goes into labor? Where are your voices, when another teenager is arrested for "minor consumption"? Where are your voices then? At no point in that video, did I hear that girl say she "hates" Knox. All in all, every one of us is entitled to their own opinion, that is our right! Some of the very same people I have seen posting comments about the video on Facebook/Youtube, are the very same who might visit a homosexual establishment (i.e. gay bar) and for his sake, I won't say names.
I don't hear any person ever thundering off at the mouth about another teenager in The Leader for minor consumption, or illegal possession...Why, because it has become a part of Knox. We as citizens of this community have become accustomed to such "normal" behavior. But a group of kids make a video about their town, and all of the sudden they are disrespectful? You know what I find disrespectful, those of you who are members of local churches PREACHING to our youth about how they should be, when you, yourselves are far from the image you portray. These kids did not single out any person in particular in that video. "Most of Knox's youth spend their time making babies or doing recreational drugs."....This is no lie. I, even yourselves as taxpayers, are supporting these young CHILDREN (because, truly they are very much so indeed children) with our tax dollars paying for their formula, their doctors visits, so on and so forth. These group of kids who made this video are at the age where they could have went out, had a "few" beers, gotten into their vehicles and caused a horrific accident. Instead, they sat down, and brought their creative idea to life. Do you know how many of Knox's kids I WISH would spend their time doing things like that?! Even though the kids did not say in the video that they "hate" Knox, this town is their home. I have never seen ANY of their names in the paper for wrong doings, or traffic infractions...All in all, they are great kids. And to Mr. Rich Wallen, yes the people you mentioned are very dedicated and do put hard work into this community. But let's not try to paint over a picture of crap with daisies and butterflies. Knox is home to a lot of people dependent on drugs (as most towns are), Knox is also infamous for having the leader of the KKK live here before he was murdered. Knox even ALLOWED for a KKK rally to be held around the courthouse! Knox has been home to racists, (child)murders, rapists, and habitual sex offenders! Yes, Knox is a good place to live....But just as you FINE FOLKS are doing to these kids by pointing out the BAD instead of the GOOD, that's exactly how every person outside of Knox views this town. Racists, "degenerate hillbillies". By reading about Knox in the papers from past and even present times about racism, drugs, adolescents giving birth, crooked cops....Please, somebody tell me how these kids making this video is in any way, shape, or form, any worse than what is currently going on?
In the first 19 months of the Obama administration, the federal debt increased by $2.5 trillion, which is more than the cumulative total of the national debt that was amassed by all U.S. presidents from George Washington through Ronald Reagan.
As the video states - it's not meant to be taken seriously. What part of that don't you get? Some of you DO realize that it could have been harsh, correct? Did you notice any mentions of the KKK? No. Did you hear anything about bigots or racism? No. In fact, did it ANYWHERE in the video ever say anything about hating Knox? No. What I feel the main problem is, a lot of truth is in the video and it's a mirror that some people are having a lot of trouble avoiding.
Anyone with a sense of humor who has NEVER been to Knox and watches it is going to think it's funny AND OBVIOUSLY realize it's sarcastic. Not only that, but it showcases what kind of talent this small town actually has. Do you think people honestly will think we have cardboard signs and road signs that fall over on cue? Give me a break. The video is funny and creative. If you want a video of Knox that shows it's "better" side, grab a camera and go out and film one.
You should be happy these kids made this instead of going out and doing meth or drinking and driving. My goodness, learn to laugh people.
Obama is taking this country down the road of ruin and we sit here like a bunch of lobsters falling asleep in the boiling water on the stove. If we don't get rid of his Democrat friends in Congress this election, it will be too late by the time of the next presidential election. We have to come together and save our country.
Thank you to all who can find the humor in our harmless video. These are the brief thoughts I posted on my Facebook page, and I stand behind them.
"I noticed that there were some people who were rather offended by the video I helped put together, and their way to respond to that offended feeling was to write untrue, hateful and rude things. This is my response.
This video was made in complete light-heartedness and not meant to be mean or offensive. If I really hated living here, I'd spend my time trying to get out instead of making silly videos.
Believe what you want about me and the other fantastic people who made this video. At the end of the day, we know where our hearts were at and that is all that matters."
Well, at least the children who made this video thought of a creative way to show their frustrations with living in a small town. I am glad they are not out their doing far more destructive activities. Who knows, maybe they will remember these frustrations as they grow older and they will form committees, join our city gov't etc and change some things!!! Heaven forbid these kids just settle for things the way they are and not try to change them for the better!!!
I am from Knox and suggest someone make a more appealing video of Welcome to Knox! No matter where you go there are always bad parts in every city, disrespectful? yes, sort of...rude? yes, to some...commical, yes in a non harmful way...it is part of Knox, the part some never see or look at...those of you complaining, when was the last time you took a ride through parkview? Those of you who think it is commical, well, it is in a lighthearted kinda way, but seriously...find something else to make fun of instead of your own town. I my self am in the middle of the road on this. It is somewhat embarising and somewhat made me chuckle inside because it is a place that i was born and raised and no matter how bad it looks i still love my hometown! Seems like people in Knox judge one another to much, find a way to come to a medium where you can all look and say YES this is a part of our town that could improve, but do something about it...don't argue...hey knox built a skate park for our youth, that was something i thought would never happen and it did, my kids love it! Please someone make a video of the highlights in Knox and the positive things!
If you are looking for positive videos about Knox, look no further that the WKVI Facebook page. I've posted videos of my experiences since I've been here just over a month now.
You have to scroll down a bit but they are there.
Or you can search 'wkvi' on youtube.
I have watched this video many times, An for those of you who are finding the video to be offencive well all I have to say is "what are you doing to change others minds about knox"??? It is always said "children are the future" well here it is in a nut shell........"YOUR FUTURE IS TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING" unless everyone decides they have had enough of "Knox" alway being the "butt" of everyones jokes nothing will be done and the video will remain the truth! I thank those kids who took the time to make the video and open everyones eyes to the truth. GREAT JOB KIDS! Now its time to stop pushing everything that is wrong with our town under the rug and do something. Stop these drug houses, respond to our calls we make to the police about "shady activity" going on in our neighborhood. And listen to our YOUTH........they are after all the ones following in your footsteps. Set the example and try to fix what is wrong! and lay off these kids, you people who are mad or upset are just mad you didn't have what it takes to make your voice heard!!!!!
About the video of Knox- While there are truths to the video and the kids were creative- the point is this: There are many people in this town and county who work hard to try to better the community and try to bring tourism here. The video was meant to be fun but obviously there is a lesson to learn here- it is not always a wise choice to post things on the internet. In the process, you are most likely causing a harsh effect on tourism. The efforts put in by people trying to do good in this community is wiped out with one video. My suggestion to those who made the video is to do the right thing and remove the video, then showcase your talent by creating a video which the board of tourism can actually distribute to help the area.
In response to "My suggestion to those who made the video is to do the right thing and remove the video, then showcase your talent by creating a video which the board of tourism can actually distribute to help the area."
Thank you for saying that we have talent, I know we all appreciate that.
Regarding the removal of the video, I respectfully disagree that that would be the 'right' thing to do. I do not suspect that anyone from out of town (or even most people who live here) would look at our video and take it seriously.
As for working with the tourism board, I cannot speak for my friends, but I think that would be an absolute honor and I would most definitely seize that opportunity should it arise!
I agree why did they have to bring out the negative in our city ? If they want to do something for fun do it on a more positive note. Today in life we have to many disappointments with our everyday lives being it a job lose, cancer, stress and so on. Do something that will make you remembered by the good deeds that you have done or someone in your family has.
Not by stepping on people and degrading the town you call home. It is to my understanding the children in this video have good familys and that the one is the grand son of our own state Representative,so by knowing this I think they could of come up with a better video of our community.
As a business owner who works with the tourism bureau, I don't see that this video is going to negatively impact my business in any way. I rely on a lot of folks from out of the area to purchase my product, but I highly doubt that any of my customers are going to even see it. If they do, I would hope that they would have enough sense to realize that every community (large or small) has the good and the bad areas, etc. Leave the kids alone...at least they aren't bashing my mailbox.
Rachael,
I'd say the opportunity has arisen- at least to start a discussion. I would much rather have the positives portrayed. Also, since WKVI has been streaming live, they have had people from all over the US who used to live hear or have ties here listening. Please don't think only people who are currently in Knox are the only ones who would look up Knox. Please contact the board of Tourism.
I just watched the video that has Knox freaking out. I really don't understand what the big deal is. I'm from Winamac and we have the same things there, from the cornfields everywhere to the "scenery". It's just part of a rural town. It's nothing to get upset over. We laugh about having cornfields surrounding us everyday. Also, as mentioned in several of the posts, it was just for fun. They didn't mean any harm, and they didn't say anything particularly bad. Lay off. There are much worse things these kids could be doing. All the people who think it's a horrible thing just need to get a sense of humor, lighten up, and not take everything so personally.
I think that the video is funny and that is just what it is meant to be but, the sad thing is that alot of it is the truth, I have lived in this county all of my life, as my family has for the last 100 years, I am not offended by it some people might because alot of is true, I really think this a waste of time subject, not even sure why I am wasting my time on it!
I viewed the Knox video on youtube and I was not highly offended by it. The video was well scripted and delivered. My question is, what is the location of the seemingly abandoned brick street/road shown in the tape? Also, when you go to youtube and type in "Welcome to Knox", to see this video, look to the right of the screen. There is a list of other videos available about Knox and Starke County, some of them posted by the Starke County Historian. These informative videos are about the early settlement of Starke County, early schools, the gateway project and more. Or, try Search, type in Knox, Indiana for a list. There are also videos from Hensler Nursery, Hamlet. For those whose main focus has been on this one video,I suggest you view the others.
did anyone go to njsp jv football game at Boone grove? all I can say is that coach radtke is one heck of a guy, what an outstanding roll model for our young youth! we are very lucky to finally have a coach/teacher who wants to be a part of these kids' life and not just there for an extra paycheck!
I have not seen the video, but from the comments, the complainers act like everything is peachy around here. I see too little being done for our youth(except the skate park, park improvements). I know a few are working very hard, but MUCH more by MANY more people needs done. I've coached for many years, & nearly 75% of kids are from broken homes/families. These people need mentoring/counseling/guidance. We need more outreach, and a REAL COMMUNITY CENTER instead of a banquet hall to impress meeting goers & passerbys(it is nice but we have far higher priorities). I've been praying for decades for something similar to Lifeplex(but on a smaller scale) for kids/people of all ages, to be in a positive environment. YES, we have MANY positives, but our school system is lagging far behind on the dual-credit system of neighboring schools(classes that qualify for college credits for easier transition & success). I see nothing wrong with young minds expressing their opinions, for we all must honestly see the error of our ways in order to correct them. But I would also like to see these brilliant young minds remain here & work to make THEIR HOME better for the future. And 1 thing is for sure, we definitely need some fresh, unbiased, honest people leading us in politics.
The satirical video about Knox on YouTube is not going to hurt tourism. Those of you who think that need to wake up. People don't go to Knox just to explore like they do Chicago or New York City. People drive through Knox, they don't stop and look around.
In response to Rachael Shepherds video. I have lived here for all my life, 60 years to be exact.
I do not even know these kids in the video, but I believe they were having fun which some of you people don't know how to do. Come on people lighten up...the video could have been titled Knox the capitol of Meth.....but was it no. The kids did nothing wrong, I found humor in it. These kids could have had a meth lab going or out stealing, but they were not. I have seen worse videos on you tube that are real shockers, that should not not even be online.
In todays society everyone needs a little laughter. There is nothing wrong with the video, you people just want something to complain about.
The following has no humor in it at all. Well...if you want something to complain about? Complain about the new local tax that Mr.Smith wants started, with todays unemployement record. I think he has a screw loose. I don't agree with the sherrifs pension. I am sorry but there is people out here without jobs, that can not afford another tax so a sherrif can live comfortably in his or her golden years'
For those who say that there need to be more positive videos about Knox and the surrounding area posted. I just want to follow up with an interesting statistic:
i have 7 'positive' videos posted on the WKVI facebook page and on youtube.
They feature my experiences at the National Night Out, Harvest Fest, a Winamac HS football game, the Kelly Miller Circus in Winamac, a visit to the Culver HS cafeteria, Cruise Night, etc...
All very positive, wouldn't you agree?
All my videos put together have received 540 views.
The "Welcome to Knox" video has almost 5,000 views.
Are you SURE you want more positive videos about Knox on youtube?
;-)
Lets see are we building hotels every year NO! so the video has no impact on tourism because there is none.NEXT TOPIC how dare the county council think about raisng our taxes, I cant raise my pay so I can pay my property taxes, mortage utilities groceries etc. Dont try the scare tatics that it is for ambulance, police, etc BLAH BLAH BLAH Dont wait until the next election now is the time for a real change
I watched the video of Welcome to Knox, and I also found it amusing. I don't think it will harm tourism or anything else. All counties that are agricultural have this going on. The kids did a good job with this video.
How do you think the owners of the mobile home feel about you poking fun at their home? How would you feel if it were your home?
New taxes you have to be kidding me! How can that be oh yea forgot they get insurance for attending a meeting every month maybe 2 I guess that is why they can afford how about get rid of all the perks for part time elected positions that will help not much but better than raising OUR TAXES
why dont you look at the knox video this way......its through the eyes of KIDS i wonder what ADULTS think of this community when they scout it for a site for a future factory or bussiness and they see the exact same things the kids had in the sketch !
further more...whats the deal with our football program ??? i see being a homegrown coach or out of towner they all adopt the "lets do what weve always done so we can get what weve always got" approach. anyone who has watched a game knows what i mean its like the coaching staff almost TRYS to insure victory (to the opposition). we have a "young inexperienced" team yet we play the EXACT same kids play after play quarter after quarter with almost nil in substitutions...lets miss the same block or same tackle play after play and reward the kids for it ! then talk about how our team is inexperienced !!!!! i say lets put the light on the kids who dont get to play instead of the coaches kids or my mommy and daddy are well known in the community kids.....think about it varsity...both games have been blowouts and im sure tonights will be no different but count the subs going in ......im guessing NONE !!! we watched a freshman game and to be honest they played with more heart and discipline that the jv or varsity could only hope to but the ones that really made a difference will hardly ever see more than a minute combined of play time on any other game ... SAD...embarrassing and sad...but we gotta keep tradition !!
I know the Mother that lives in the moblie home in the you tube video,a single mom trying to make it.I do not think seeing a deer on the side of the road is funny either.I do belive someone is trying to cover this, up by saying it was just for fun. When I grew up I was always told not to make fun of other people, what has happen to this world. How sad!
"I know the Mother that lives in the moblie home in the you tube video,a single mom trying to make it."
So is the mother that lives in the yellow mobile home, outside of which one of her children took part in the video, and she didn't seem to have an issue with it.
Also, from my understanding, the girl in the video was shooting these corn scenes in her OWN FAMILY'S FIELD, and none of THEM seem to have a problem with it, either, so anyone who says it's offensive to farmers should think twice as well.
The truth is, whatever your situation is, if you can't take some time out to laugh about it, you are taking things way too seriously.
There is nothing wrong with living in a mobile home & there is nothing wrong about being a farmer. A dead deer laying beside the road can be seen almost anytime. What's so funny? Nothing, until you associate it with a town, occupation or family. So don't try to tell everyone it's not making fun of Knox & a way of life. (Nothing wrong with living in Knox either.)
Everyone is sure worked up about nothing it was a satire do you hear OBAMA whinning oh yes I guess we all do, but this is not meant to be a slam bet you cant watch HEE-HAW either lol . let focus on what the goverment is trying to impose tax hikes and coverups instead everyone is worked up about a satire some kids did. here is part of the problem !!!!
Perhaps the makers of this video will help us to open our eyes that maybe we should look around and do some spring cleaning in the community. If elected officials are discouraged about the video it might be a sign that we should look and assist a new retail company to open in Knox. Perhaps, the young people in our area have better eye sight or is it we are just so use to the same everyday outlook in Knox.
Welcome to Knox Video, These so called KIDS need to get a JOB they have to much time on their hands, where were their parents and GRANDPARENTS, do they have any respect for anyone, evidently Not, not even for themselves. I believe this will come back to haunt a few parents and grandparents.
"Welcome to Knox Video, These so called KIDS need to get a JOB they have to much time on their hands, where were their parents and GRANDPARENTS, do they have any respect for anyone, evidently Not, not even for themselves. I believe this will come back to haunt a few parents and grandparents."
Oh please. True, the people who made this video are young adults rather than kids.
Where are their parents? Their parents are busy supporting their children for using their creative outlets to do something they enjoy rather than the myriad of horrible things they could be out doing like so many others their age.
As for mentioning their grandparents in all caps, please stop being passive-aggressive and just come out and say what you're thinking: Yes, one of the people who worked on the video is related to someone in politics. That is so irrelevant that it isn't even worth mentioning. I doubt she even knows of this video's existence, let alone would be worried about a silly little 3-minute video effecting her campaign.
If the people who made this video were really trying to be disrespectful, they could have been. They could have mentioned something about the huge amount of KKK supporters Knox has had in the past. They could have taken so many specific jabs at specific people and businesses, but they were just showing the humorous side to life in a small town.
You'd have no problem with this video if some other town's name was slapped on it (as it very well could have been), so get off your high horse and use your brain to think for 3 seconds about what you are saying. Just the fact that they put their names on it shows they never dreamed it could have been taken in a negative fashion, or else they would have done it anonymously, I'm sure.
Please stop looking for reasons to be hateful and attacking and move on to something else.
I think anyone that has a problem with the Welcome to Knox video should just yhank the kids for having the curage for doing what they did if some people would take some pride in their homes or properties the would be a very beautiful town
These 'kids' are all over 18 and are responsible for their actions. If you blame parents or grandparents for the actions of these adults, what does that say about you?
I agree w other posters here who say that this is satire.
Lighten up, Frances.
Just a thought, maybe when making this video this is what the kids wanted...all the publicity {which is what they're getting} just saying
"Welcome to Knox Video". I simply have one suggestion... At the end of the video, the "disclaimer" you put on is rather vague. You see the title of the video "Welcome to Know" with the statement "not to be taken seriously" under it. It suggest that Knox itself should not be taken seriously, not the video. Please, simply alter the disclaimer to clearly state that the VIDEO is not to be taken seriously.. Also, put the disclaimer at the beginning of the video so that anyone viewing it will know up front that it is all made in fun so that they will not develope an attitude while viewing it....
KNOX 0-48 ! I like what the one post says about, "lets keep doing what we've always done." And i wonder if they kept the same kids in the entire game too .
C'mon...the video is funny. At least creativity is being cultivated here.
I love the anonymous sparring over the "Welcome To Knox" YouTube video! So, obviously I'm going to keep it anonymous as well...lol I thought it was quite funny and a good reflection of what all small towns have. No need to take offense to it you "GOOD" citizens of Knox. Winamac, North Judson, Plymouth, Valparaiso, South Bend and so on have the same issues. Maybe it has caused so much upset due to the fact that it's an election year and a reflection of our elected officials...not sure...I'm just sayin'. Lay off the kids...You people that keep saying there should be more positive videos about Knox...ummm there are positive videos on YouTube...have you watched any of them prior to this video? I bet not. Tom Berg said it best...he has posted several videos of his experiences in the area and has only gotten just over 500 hits and this WTKV has gotten over 5000. Just to reiterate...there are no false statements in this video. Knox is what it is and a tourist spot it is not. When my daughter got married I was embarrassed to tell my out of town guests that we even had a hotel/motel because they are very disgusting establishments. I told them to stay in Plymouth or Valparaiso. Has anyone in tourism development even visited these establishments? If so, I am quite sure you would agree. So answer me this...if we are supposed to promote this city as a tourist spot, where are these "tourist" supposed to stay? What are these "tourist" supposed to do while they are here? They have to drive 25 miles to the nearest WalMart and 25 miles + to the nearest Target. Wake up Knox...we do not need a tourism development program in Knox...you people are putting the cart way before the horse here. First you need to have the necessary attractions and accommodations to get people to actually want to spend time here. Take the money you are using for tourism development and use it elsewhere until there is a need for it. Let's say we take those monies and clean up the downtown area. How many vacant buildings are on Main Street? How long do we have to look at that vacant "movie theater" on the corner of Lake and Main? Or even the building on the opposite corner?
Signed,
Just keepin' it real
I sure hope I don't have to depend on the Knox Fire Dept. to save my house. I first went by Jerry's Burger Store, then commenced to watch the action, & 1st of all, it took over 1/2 hour of smoke coming out for the Fire Dept to get there. Then it was over an hour before anything was done. & I thought firemen were trained to unhook electricity, but they waited for NIPSCO. But it looked like a circus, with everyone standing around just waiting for it to burn down, cause there was flames coming out a vent on the roof, but we saw no water being sprayed. Hadn't that store been for sale for along time?
I must say Shut up if u do not know what ur talking abou....
Jerry's Burger Store? Tell me more. When did this happen?
Good points "Keepin' It Real". How long do we have to keep looking at these rundown and vacant buildings? What are some of the ordinances for a property owner? Everyone in politics wants us to be proud of Knox, so please give us something to be proud of. The negative press we get heavily outweighs the good. I'm not saying the media is painting an ugly picture, I'm saying that's what it is.
Yeah, I watched Jerry's store on fire too. It looked like the firemen were unsure of where the fire was and how to exactly approach it, but yeah, they looked more like they were standing around wondering what to do. Looked like one of the roof fan motors caught on fire. Hope everyone was alright. Drove by today and it looked like alot of smoke damage. I did see it in the Real Estate 4-sale magazine awhile back, but they'll have to do alot of repairs before even reopening again. Have faith, it'll work out ok.
WAKE UP STARKE COUNTY !!!!! dont be fooled by the trickery if we dont raise your taxes we are going to have to this and endanger your safety. Live with in your means like the rest of us do we have all suffered suck it up figure it out !! election day cant come fast enough!! at least there is hope for the federal goverment getting straighted out..
Local Option Income Tax????
Now here is a discussion everyone should get involved in........Not just Mark Smith. Less money from land line service, cell phone funding not coming in as fast???? How much cell phone funding money is coming in ( reguardless of the speed)? If 25% is lost from land line users switching to cell phones, cell phone users should increase by at least 25% ? Since cell phone funding is computed using a different formula, what is the formula? How much money difference? Many people that never had a land line now have cell phones. Families once using one land line are now using two, three or four cell phones. Sheriff's pension not guaranteed if gambling boat monies are lost? OH NO!! I just realized, My pension is not guaranteed either & I don't receive monies from the gambling boats.
NO NEW TAX WITHOUT ALL THE FACTS !!!!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations on your 500K hits! I'm one of those people who like to keep up on what is happening around Judson and Starke County. I have been gone for some 45 years, but still recognize many names.
Keep up the good work!
Tom Vessely
Colorado
I like the questions asked by the earlier poster. But I was also wondering, is the Sheriffs Pension the same no matter how many terms elected? I never even knew their was a LIFETIME MEAL TICKET pension for becoming Sheriff. So, if by chance, we elect a new Sheriff every election, then we have to give each & every 1 a lifetime pension? THAT'S REDICULOUS. A pension should be earned after 25 years of service as an officer, and if by chance an officer becomes Sheriff, then it should be a little higher. But nobody deserves a pension for just becoming Sheriff. That's as rediculous as these 1 term Congressmen being paid for life. This sytem is heavily flawed & needs a total, major overhaul. I would still like to see the exact amounts & projects that the major Moves $ went for.
Good luck on that I be that it cannot be reproduced another waste of OUR money, that is what everyone needs to remember it is not the councils they are suppose to be the carekeepers
Was in Knox High School recently, and came away wondering: Do we only have two sports going on? The cafeteria is decorated with only football and cheerleading. Lockers are decorated...but again, only for football and cheerleading. What about boys tennis, boys and girls cross country, girls volleyball? What about band? Where has the school spirit gone? Isn't that the job of the cheerleaders: to raise school spirit for the WHOLE school? Do the other teams not deserve the same treatment or do we only cheer for football in the fall? Just wondering.....
Does anyone on here actually have facts about any topic or do you just make comments on subjects you know absolutely nothing about ie. fire department and police reports. Maybe instead of sitting around gossiping about people who give their time ie. volunteer firefighters who come from their homes to a fire scene or police reports. You should A:Join the fire department. B.Run for an elected seat in the city/county or C. Get the police report oh didn't you know those are public records. In case you don't know what public means OPEN TO EVERYONE. But instead you will sit here are complain about what everyone else does or doesn't do and how you could do it better. BUT YOU WON'T.
To the person wondering about Knox only having 2 sports team. The swim team gets absolutely nothing.(You didnt even mention them in your complaint) They werent even included in the Starke County Super Senior picture. These kids work nearly year around and deserve to be recognized
To the person complaining about Obama and the 2.5 trillion dollar federal debt. I notice you didnt mention George Bush sr, or George W. Bush. Why is that? I know for a fact that they didnt wipe the debt clean.
To the person complaining about Obama and the 2.5 trillion dollar federal debt. Are you saying that the Federal Debt was zero from the time Ronald Regan was in office all the way until Obama took office. What about George Bush sr, or Bill Clinton or George W. Bush. I dont think it was zero then either.
I have to agree with you. Blogs are filled with talkers not doers. I bet 9 out of 10 never even considered joining the fire dept. or running for office. They are experts on everything but never accomplish a single thing. The internet gives them power but they don't have enough power to lift a finger to help someone in the community. Keep on punching those keys on your keyboard but I'm gonna hang out with the guys with dirt under their fingernails.
I know these records are Public, but they're not free. We pay everyone's wages w/ our taxes, yet we still have to pay for anything we request, like it's an extra burden on them to print up a report for someone who's taxes pay7 their wages, insurance, retirement & pension. PLEASE tell us the facts. Put an itemized statement in the paper of the dollar amounts & projects the Major Moves $ went for & then we'll might be satisfied. We get taxed when we're paid, when we buy anything(-food), on all our bills(cell, elec., heat, everything), each dollar is taxed coming & going...& even while it's sitting in savings, if you're lucky enough to have any. And obviously too much of our Property Tax $ is going downstate if we're relying on Gambling $, because we have no casino, so that should've never been taken for granted. We Need Transparency. Try Us. For example, show us a statement for Major Moves $ and let us see for ourselves. Transparency...isn't that the big word all the politicians are running on presently? Where is it.
What "facts" are you talking about? What lack of "facts" about the fire dept. & police reports have you upset? You are talking & not doing. Give us the "facts". You just keep punching the keys on your keyboard keeping us informed with all the facts you find in the public records & good luck with finding a politician with "dirt under their fingernails"!
I'm a licensed qualified nurse who submitted a resume the first day I heard that a temporary nurse was needed. What's wrong I can't even be called for an interview? Why even announce that a nurse is needed on WKVI?
To Anoy.
I didn't mean to slight swimming at all. I was talking about the fall sports and what was being celebrated/recognized in the school last week. I absolutely agree that swimming, wrestling, and almost all of the spring sports are completely ignored. Danny Bradley went to state last year, and he got some well-deserved recognition for his incredible run, but what about the other kids? As a parent of children in something other than the big two (football and boys basketball, for those who are lost)I am asking why they are largely ignored by the cheerleaders. I recognize that football and basketball bring in the highest gate, almost by virtue of their start times and weekend play, but is that a factor in cheering?
Many years ago, when I was a student at KHS, there were spirit competitions among the classes; there were pep sessions and the band and the cheerleaders worked together to keep the crowds going. While the dance routines are fantastic, and I admire the work that goes into them, where is the spirit part? (remember when the dance routine was by the Redsteppers? Do they exist anymore?) The homecoming pep sessions were run by the cheerleaders, with skits and things designed to foster school spirit. I have been to the last six pep sessions, and this has not been the case.
Mr. Cronk, extremely capable of getting a crowd going, does an admirable job, but does anybody remember the students in the stands as floats and queen candidates drove onto the cinder track, the band marching in, the football team on the field cringing/excited at the thought of being called up to participate in a skit? It just doesn't seem to have the same excitement.....
I realize that expectations have changed along with the times, and that state rules don't really allow for pep sessions, but couldn't there be a happy medium? We used to have a check-in desk at different functions (can't remember who ran it -- anybody?) and got spirit points for signing in. This got students to cross country meets, tennis matches, volleyball games, swim meets, wrestling, track meets. Not all of them, but more than usual.
I still recall fondly the final spirit day...class against class, competing for the right to be the best class. Obstacle course, three legged race, fun stuff with the grand finale: the tug of war. There was a tote board hanging on the wall in the gym, updating the score.
I also have to say that I was kind of annoyed that in the last two weeks that I have had the opportunity to listen to Saturday Sportsline that I heard only about football. Granted, I did not listen to the entire program (was in and out of the room)but there are other kids out there knocking it out of the park in sports other than football. Perhaps Nathan's show discusses the others on Thurday, but I have not been able to catch it. My kids have had games and I am unwilling to pay $4.95 for the pleasure of finding out.
Another note, Anoy, Super Senior was decided by the three area principals, according to the card. I agree the sample was odd. Largest group I saw in the pic was cheer, with 6 (one was in her track uni). No swimming, no wrestling, no CC, no boys basketball, no baseball. If I forgot someone, I apologize....this is just off the top of my head.
Super Senior Picture is decided by the area principals, and they are supposed to be decided not only on who but what they have accomplished in their school work and in the extra-curricular. Why it is unbalanced I don't know but you would have to talk to the principals to find that out. The premise behind the Super Senior picture is a good one in that the photographer is trying to highlight the best in the area schools. If you have a complaint you would have to talk to the principals.
I do listen to Saturday Sports Line and Thursday Sports Talk. Nathan's show on Thursday covers all sports and he does a good job. Saturday Sports line, covers the sports of the week but does not lean as hard on the stats as Thursday's show.
Thanks for the info. I will try to catch Nathan's show.
Stop complaining about other sports getting recognition and start doing something. It is real easy to sit in front of your computer and complain about everyone else. You could submit photos to the papers and radio. Make signs and banners for them. Make goodie bags for them at sectional time and have them get them at the school. Don't expect everyone else to do things for your kids all the time!
I think she's referring to the school spirit from within, and you knock people for communicating over the blogspot, or "hitting their keyboard", while you're doing the same thing...hypocrite. I agree, their should be support from cheerleaders & students for all sports, but times have changed everything in our world.
"you knock people for communicating over the blogspot, or "hitting their keyboard", while you're doing the same thing...hypocrite."
Completely agree, very well spoken.Thank you.
I agree with both posts, the coaches need to contact all outlets of the media to report scores. Just about everyone has a fax, email or cell phone. Even though I do not have children in swimming I would like to know how they did or any activity. Or how the band is doing. Time to get up and have everyone get involved. If your son/daughter are involved in any sports or non-sport activities contact the media (radio/newspaper/blog) and let everyone know.
Why shouldnt the cheerleaders do things for all the sports. Yes I understand that there are some sports hey cant be there cheering at, but ALL the student athletes deserve to get recognized. You go into the school and the lockers for the football team, basketball team are decorated. Are the other student athlets lockers decorated. Nope they are not.
I was just wondering when I was coming out of Knox this afternoon and all the firetrucks were just flat out flying down the highway do they ever stop to think they may kill someone !!!! They were driving way to fast through lines of traffic back and forth to get water . The fire is all ready out of control and flying up and down the highway and then one in a pickup drove past me on 350 E just flying too where did he think he was going and on top of that flew right through the intersection of 200 S and 350 E without even slowing down come on he was heading away from the fire and in a pickup what possible could he be doing to help out . I always give the right of way but there are alot that dont and these firefighters are going to kill someone someday if they dont slow down !!!
Aw poor cheerleaders are getting picked on ..... Well when I was in school that is just what they were cheerleaders . Today all they are is girls trying to out do the other not actually there for team spirit anymore. A lot of bickering of whos who and whos got what and look at what I wear.
Wow! It is great to see that we have so many people interested in school spirit and supporting all of the various sports at Knox High School. It would be wonderful to see all of you at the next Knox Community Athletic Booster meeting on September 30th at 6pm in the Redskin Room. Regarding the locker decorations, the problem(yes, it is a problem that not all are recognized) was discussed last weekend and will be remedied by tomorrow.
Friends, we all can think of some way we've been slighted by someone, or some recognition we haven't gotten. It's unfortunate, but it happens. When you feel like that, try doing something thoughtful and nice for somebody else who also might be feeling unrecognized. Make someone's day--you might accidentally even make your own!
Where Does Starke County get their fuel from now? Why would they buy their fuel from a out of county business, to save 2 cents or no kick back offered ???? Why do they buy police cars in chicago ? Why not a local dealer I am thure when they break down you remember the local dealer then... The tax dollars that come from Starke County should when ever possible stay in Starke County, I don't remember the saying right this minute but it is about a dollar spent locally goes around so many times.. Wake up lets worry about our Starke County businesses and the Starke people that work at those businesses. They are the same people that voted you into
office.
About school spirit, when I was in school, we had the I.C.E. program, where kids would get credit for working part-time, so why is there not a student working for our local newspapers reporting all the scores & happenings? It would be a great start for someone's journalism career. About the fire at the junkyard, this has happened multiple times, and they give the excuse that it was an accident, but it seems to happen everytime they get a big pile of tires. There was a Hazardous Cleanup Crew there all evening, and I think this one's gonna cost them big bucks. What made it more dangerous is that traffic was outrageous(school was about to get out)+ people like to see fires, it was insane. The craziness about caused many accidents, & with so much traffic, it makes it difficult for firemen to do their job. Hope fully that junkyard will be forced to make certain that these "accidents" don't happen again.
one day you guys b**** cause we aren't fast engoung and now we are to fast, hope none of your houses catch fire or your kids aren't in a car acciddent maybe we will just volunteer not to come at all and we'll see how much you have to say then. oh but thats right we are all anonymous on here so its easy to set on your fat --- and run your mouth. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE WAY FIRE DEPTS. ARE MAYBE ALL OF YOU SHOULD TAKE OUR PLACES!!!
Here is an easy solution with raising taxes. Every County Office holder and candidate needs to know the answer to the following question. What is the Daily Average Cost to operate their office.
Reduce that daily cost by 1%
and then figure what that plays out for a year.
1. Charge more for the services you provide- Charge more for ambulance rides, especially for non emergencies.
2. Stop Giving Raises! When unemployment is up and revenues are down, the county gives out raises. How does that math work. Since some of the council members are business owners, Would they do that in their day to day operations?
3. Pool Resources- Within the county create a county/public employees association. Knox, North Judson, and Hamlet. All of the School Corporations, etc- Group them together for their benefits, and you reduce the cost because fo the lower cost. Do not get an elaborate hollywood insurance policy that covers the non-essentials like cosemetic surgery or married children as dependents.
4. Create a single control point where all of the purchasing/procurement is done. This will prevent over purchasing. Set supply limits based upon bi-weekly useage. Then order accordingly. Visit savings with printer sharing. Encourage electronic documents.
Well to the one who is upset with another of why they have to drive so darn fast and you made the statement hope it is not your home or you in an accident --- WELL what are you going to feel like when you or one of your own member's of the department kills someone that may just be your own family member ever stop to think of THAT ! your driving so fast you dont even know who you are passing or whos view may be blocked and they pull in front of you on accident and yesterdays timing of the fire was really a bad time as we had school letting out factories changing shifts and just a bunch of on lookers so you should have taken all that into consideration . Also like someone had stated this has happened many times with Scrap burning .
I just want to say that I am greatful that the citizens of Starke County have such a wonderful group of firemen. Not only do they put their own lives on the line to protect our homes and businesses, but they also put up with the complaints of some, who would prefer them to slow down when responding to a fire, and those that think they aren't doing their jobs quickly enough.
I for one am extremely happy that those firemen are here of us and that they rush to get to the scene as quickly as possible, so the damage can be minimized.
Stop your negative comments, those firemen work really hard under conditions that are not always optimal. Would you prefer them to take their time if it is your house or business that is on fire? And I would also like to remind some of you, to move over and get out of the way. Someone who needs help during an emergency is counting on quick help!
I would like to thank all of the Fire Departments that spent over 6 hours of their time putting the fire out. They are truly very appreciated by the silent majority.
I really just don't think before they talk. We have some amazing firemen here in our county. Not only do they fight the fires in their own districts but they are there for back up and help in other districts as well. People are going to complain about something everytime something happens regardless of the situation. All these people bad mouthing the firemen that protect me and my family are amazing. I know each and everyone of them personally and they would stop anything and everything they were doing to help me or anyone that was in need.
I get so sick and tired of all the complaing and bad mouthing. You want the facts go get a report of the accident, fire, or whatever the situation is. The firemen come from all over center township to proctect the community and get $10 to do it. They don't do it for the money they do it b/c they care. I bet no one has checked into the positions at the fire house because they had to do a call out b/c they don't have people knocking on the door to run into a burning building and leave their families everytime their pager goes off. I would just be glad you have 25 men that do want to help and yes that's it 25 and they are all volunteer and all have families and full time jobs to tend to.
A remark (jokingly, and taken as such) made on WKVI radio about Starke County being isolated by all the road construction in the county. This is not directed at WKVI but to county officials.
Well, not really isolated. If you live on 300E that runs north & south one mile to the west of US 35 you will see most of the traffic speeding past your once peaceful country home. On this small country road posted with "No Truck" signs, "NOT BEING ENFORCED BY LOCAL OR STATE POLICE" you will see tractor/trailers, some pulling two trailers & speeding, most all of US 35 traffic is using this road or so it seems. The road, not meant for this heavy traffic, is breaking up & the pieces are being thrown to the sides & into the lawns by the speeding traffic. I wonder if this torn & broken road will be resurfaced after the culvert on US 35 is completed or if it will be patched, leaving it in such bad condition it will barely be able to be traveled. While county workers have partially patched some of the holes & placed stone along the sides making it more drivable & helping to stop it from crumbling, it's still in bad condition. The truckers need to follow the detour signs & use state roads that are built to take the heavy loads. Will the road repairs be paid for by the state or the county? Since the state has a posted detour, I think Starke Co. taxpayers will be stuck with cost. The Sheriff's dept. should stop the truck traffic & slow down the speeders. Remember we also vote!
Just curious what is the population of people living in center township??? that 25 firemen are making sure that they take care of all the fires ??? or lets do bigger lets do all of starke county what's the population ?? and we have Center, Bass Lake, Hamlet, Koontz Lake, North Judson, San Pierre so we have 150 firemen give or take a few to take care of HOW MANY PEOPLE???????? oh but they are not quick enough or wait they are driving to fast or OH NO the took an extra minute to get there but they did get there and where were you????? oh that's right not doing anything to help anyone...probably one of the people standing there watching the firemen get the fire out but to lazy to do anything to help them out or VOLUNTEER!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with the poster about the detour at 35 most of the traffic does come down 400N and turn onto 300E. They speed and don't seem to care that people live on these roads. My kids get on the school bus at 6:30am and this morning we had two semis speeding down the road with the bus making stops. This is ridiculous and nobody is doing anything about it. The police themselves can be seen speeding down these roads and not caring that there are kids playing and people who are trying to safely exit their driveways and 400N is also starting to crumble but I don't see the county fixing the problem. They prefer to look the other way.
To the person posting about the truck traffic, etc. on 300 East...they are doing the same thing on 600 East and 700 East. Just last week there was a head-on collision on 600 East where I believe there were injuries to both drivers. That wasn't on the news. My husband was almost creamed by a Fed Ex semi that was doing at least 65 mph on 700 East as he attempted to see around the trees blocking his view as he pulled out onto the road. The signs on 30 are not very obvious about the road being closed. There is a small sign right be State Road 39 indicated "Detour State Road 35", but if you are in the passing lane on 30 with a truck next to you, you will never see that sign. There is a lot of traffic turning off of 30 onto 35 that doesn't realize there is a detour until they hit the road block...thus the increased use of the side roads. The semis are also driving on 500 East and that is a dirt road...that's fun.
We have great firemen that risk life & limb(not to mention their time). Yes, we can never use too much safety, and it is documented how many accidents happen with emergency vehicles at intersections, but most of it is people just not paying enough attention & yielding the right of way. But these men(&women) risk it all, and accept the responsibility & maintenence of millions of dollars of taxpayer equipment to make certain everyone is as safe as possible, so there's no way someone could do this job without genuinely caring for their community. Be safe fellas, and thanks.
Remember! The only firemen we have in the county are Volunteers. They do their best. Maybe sugest they drive a little slower when conditions allow or a little faster when possible so they are aware of your feelings but be sure to thank them for their time & the great job they do for us. Let them know we appreciate the sacrifaces they make to help the community & our families. Thank you to all the volunteers!
Whoa, everyone, let's take a deep breath. The VOLUNTEER firefighters go through months and months of training to run into a fire when everyone else is running out. Yesterday, as I pulled over for a passing firetruck, I got flipped off by the jerk in the semi behind me. Aren't we supposed to pull over for emergency vehicles --fire, police, ambulance? If everyone was pulled over, it wouldn't have been a problem that the fire trucks were racing to the scene. If it were your house, you would want them there as quickly as possible, assessing the situation, and containing the fire. There are houses surrounding the area of the fire that were probably in danger also. There were cars parked on the side of the road, across the street...congesting the traffic at an already busy intersection. I'm sure some were just travelling on their merry way and had no idea what they were driving into, but some were there just to check out the scene.
My father, brother, and husband are/were all volunteer firemen and I couldn't be prouder of the service they and all the other firemen provide to our county. These wonderful men and women give back to the community in such a positive way. When that tone goes out, they drop whatever they are doing and rush to help. How many people can honestly say that they would do the same? Not many, based on the dwindling number of volunteers. Thanks goes out to all of you.
Oh, and by the way, do all you naysayers really want to get the guys that could save your kids, pets, houses so disgusted that they quit? Then where would you be? They just don't go to house fires....they go to car accidents (those Jaws of Life -- that's the fire department), assist the Ambulance drivers with lifting patients, cover other departments who are out on call.
Most of this discussion board has been about new taxes and the volunteer fire dept. So here's an idea, lets put paid firemen on staff in Starke County. They will get all the training they need, be on staff at all times, and be able to slow down and be more efficient. They can get on scene faster and not have to fight traffic to the fire house.
But we will need to raise taxes. Because now you have to pay for salaries, health insurance, vacations etc. for at least 150 more county employees. But that shouldn't be a problem, because safety is worth any cost! Lets see how many of the critics would vote for that tax increase.
Oh, and lets not forget about the cheerleaders. Seriously, can't the people in this community find something better to do than complain about what everyone else is doing? At least they're out there doing something and trying to help their community.
Is that the backhoe the County bought from Mark Milo for $35K in the County auction that's coming up?
I'm a firefighter for knox, I find it extremly hurtful that people would say negative things about us! We all have jobs and familys! Firefighting is not the only thing we do. Also we just can't run into a burning buliding! Have you ever heard of safety first! We are not cavemen, So if you don't want our service don't call.... But that won't happen if you do call we WILL BE THERE! no matter what
I think everyone needs to realize that this forum is here to be used for expressing opinion. If you dont want to hear an opinion then dont read them!
Furthermore the raising of the taxes is a stupid Idea there are other ways to get the money and why should the sheriff get a pension? Really? When it isnt the norm today. 30 years ago yes a pension was a normal benefit. In todays society that isnt the case! Give them a 401K like the rest of us have to have!
Firemen I appreciate you every one of you but just becasue you have a blue light on your vehicle doesnt mean you can speed in excess of 90 MPH. You should be driving safely. I understand you will be speeding but sometimes it is a bit too much. It isnt the law that I get over for you but I do and always will. I am grateful for you sacrifices!
It is funny to see the posts of the cheerleaders! When reading the posts you can obviously see how our society has changed and broken down.
In response to:
"Most of this discussion board has been about new taxes and the volunteer fire dept" and second paragraph "But we will need to raise taxes."
As of now there are 120 posts. Twenty two posts is not the most of 120. Only eight posts refer to taxes of any kind new or old. There are twelve or fourteen posts that refer to firemen of which only two are negative, the others show support or are firemen who are offended, and rightly so, by the negative posts. Before I go on let me say that I fully support the fireman. Judging from your solution of raising taxes to solve the problem; well I hate to say it but you must be a politician because that is their answer to all problems even when there isn't a problem.
Isaiah Lott
I support the firemen as well I was one of them for alot of years. and the train wreck that is talked about on the headlines I was there for almost 24 hrs straight all for $ 2.00 / hr I remember walking across a ditch not realizing that it was completly full of molten sulphur that had crusted over. So I know first hand where they are coming from !!!
As far as the tax issue it is un belivable that the council is even thinking about raising taxes talking about it here will do nothing but maybe stir up the taxpayers which is good! CALL the council tell them NO NEW TAXES live within your means like the rest of us do...
Can any body just be positive anymore ???
How about it is a beautiful Friday Hope all enjoy the weekend and stay safe !!!! :)
Not be picking on one another all the time about stupid things that can not be changed by a discussion board.
To many people judge others today without knowing the facts just to cause heartache .
Thanks for the post about the cheerleaders. If you go into the high school you will see not only football and cheerleading but volleyball, cross country, tennis, band and color guard represented in the halls. Spirit week is celebrated next week for HOMECOMING 2010. One thing you can do to help school spirit is to have your child/children participate by dressing for the day. Monday - Superhero Day, Tuesday - Fairy tale Day, Wednesday - Black out day, Thursday - Class Color Day and Friday - the whole community can join in by wearing RED & WHITE, Attending the Parade at 2pm to cheer on our school and coming to the PEP SESSION after the parade in the middle school and watching the GAME at 6:30pm. Help support the Band, Colorguard, Cheerleaders and Football Players.
Really Raising taxes is stupid you are right, you must not pay property taxes or suck off of the system maybe you are right about nothing beinsolved here but at least people will become aware. take the infamous welcome to knox video on you tube it has over 15,000 hits I would say that probally attributed to here and word of mouth if that many people were intersted in how our COUNTY is ran we would be alot better off..
I, for one, salute the firemen. They do an awesome job. There are times when they are pulled out of bed in the middle of the night and there are times when they are out there in below zero weather battling a fire. Now, if my house were going up in flames, I would want these brave men there. They really do the best job they can and I appreciate it!!!!!
As a local fireman, I would first like to thank all of the persons who took the time to thank and defend us and what we do. For some, they just seem to take it for granted. Most people will never understand because they have never been called out in the middle of the night, had to give up precious time with children and other loved ones, left a hot meal only to return when it is cold, or drop things that are important to take the necessary training required to do our job, just to help others, sometimes, total strangers. That's right, REQUIRED TRAINING. Just the same as the ones on full-time paid departments. There level of expertise is no higher than most of the firemen in this county. The difference is, we are not paid for our services. I can speak for the large majority of us when I say, we do not ask for anything much out of our service, and we certainly do not do this for the money. For most of us, seeing that we have helped make terrible situations better is enough. I realize that people may not understand why we drive so fast. Just to make it clear, we go through training on a regular basis to learn how to drive safely, and quickly. People don't understand that the reason for driving away from the fire might be setting up hydrants for water supply, or getting other needed equipment to bring to the scene. We use extreme caution while responding to ALL calls, and the last thing any of us wants to see happen is an accident involving anyone, not just our own. So please, in the future, thank these men and women for the job that they do very well. A handshake, a pat on the back, or even a smile means more to most of us than you will ever know.
One more item, and I will get off my soapbox. To the 9/11, 6:26pm post. You knock the Knox fire dept, but your statement needs to be corrected. The call for this came in at 6:32pm, that's 6 minutes after your post if you are keeping track. If the building was smoking for half and hour before we arrived, why didn't you call it in instead of worrying about bashing the fire dept on this blog? There were emergency personnel on scene in less than 3 minutes. I would say that is pretty impressive. They stood around for an hour without doing anything? You need to open your eyes and look at the entire scene before you make these kind of comments. The entire department does not rush into the building and do an interior attack. We enter in teams of 2-3 people, and back-up teams stand by and wait. We do not just aimlessly spray water unless it is needed. This helps avoid costly water damage. As for calling the utility company to kill the power, 4 electric meters had already been pulled, another was locked, and there was still power to the building. That is the reason they were called, not because we weren't trained, or didn't want to do it. We do not want to enter buildings with live electricity unless there is someone inside. That call, just like all other calls, was handled properly, and ended with the best results possible. I hope you never have to rely on the Knox fire department, or any other department either, but if you do, rest assured, WE WILL respond quickly, and do the job in the most efficient and professional manner, without asking for anything in return.
I want to thank the firemen, EMT's, and police officers for the job that they do. I witnessed them at work last week at the horrible accident on 200S and 100E. I watched every one of the emergency vehicles speed past my house, and all I could do was stop and pray. I prayed for whoever might be hurt, and for the responders who would take care of them. I don't care that they were speeding, they were doing their job. How many thankless people could do what they do? When you rescue and injured person, you have to be strong, physically, mentally, and emotionally. I can't even imagine what they must go through when they have to actually use the jaws of life to cut a deseased person out of a vehicle, as they did that day. We might have an occasional mishap that shakes our world, but they go through it every day, and for $10.00. They deserve a raise as far as I am concerned. Thank you so much, Emergency Personnel. I hope that I never need you, but I'm sure you will do a good job if I do.
I am a local fireman, and I would like to let everyone know how much it means to us when someone has kinds words to say and understands the sacrifices that we make. It is very disheartening when people slam us for no legitimate reason. Not everyone realizes what it is like to get called out in the middle of the night, or leave a hot meal only to return when it is cold, or give up time with our loved ones to help others in need. We do not ask for anything in return, but sometimes it is nice to hear someone say thanks, offer a handshake, or even a simple smile. We do not do this for the money, but what most do not know is that we are required to have the same training as full-time paid departments do, and are held to the same standards. Training that requires us to give up long hours of our own time. There are times when we do drive at high rates of speed, but please understand, we all go through large amounts of training to drive emergency vehicles safely. The last thing that any of us want is to be involved in an accident. To the person who hopes that they do not have to rely on the knox fire dept, I hope you don't either. I hope you never have to need any department, but realize that if you do, we will respond as quickly as we can, and handle the job in the most efficient and professional manner as we can. What you see firemen at a scene "standing around" realize that most times, these are a back-up team to the 2-3 people already inside. You may not see water being sprayed, but I assure you, it is being used to put out fire, but it is used sparingly to reduce water damage. We do pull meters, but when they are locked, we must call a utility company to do this.
Great job Redskins on the Victory last night. Keep working hard, trust in each other & have faith and many more wins are in the future. I salute our Firemen, Police & EMT's as well. Thanks for all you do.
Here's something of interest that our Knox City Council approved, Golf Carts! I saw one today leaving Taco Bell with 3 or 4 adults and a baby on the lap of one of the adults. This was Sunday afternoon about 5 pm. Great! When in ride in cars we have to use car seats or booster seats or get a ticket. So is it alright to have then on a golf cart? What would happen if an accident happened? Can you give them a ticket? How fast would the police or fire dept. show up?
Come people, don't be so stupid.
Has anyone else noticed an increase in theft lately, We had a string of car break ins on pearl st. last week just wondering if it is happening anywhere else in town??
I am upset & disappointed about many aspects of our Knox school system. It's very disturbing to hear that Plymouth bought laptops for their whole Jr. High, in which they carry to each class, to keep everything organized & better their computer skills. All Knox did was buy 40 Ipads for the teachers. 2nd, my gradeschool daughter is picked up by the bus at 6:30am(we live 4 miles away), then sits on the bus til 7:45, and my son is late many times for his 1st Jr.High class at 7:35(but glad he gets up at 5:45 to have breakfast cause he's never able to get it at school). I was told by a bus-driver that the schedule change was done to allow busses to leave earlier for sporting events. If so, that's rediculous! Academic wise, I don't believe that the children that excell are challenged or taught near enough, with NONE learning Our Constitution. I have nephews & nieces in Plymouth & Rochester, & their curriculum is far more advanced. I feel with the State's new quota's that teachers will focus more on the kids lagging behind, thus the advanced kids get less attention & opportunity to excell even further. So, for 1, this bus situation needs adjusted, and I don't believe Mr.Kroft is the one to run the bus dept.. And 2, BEFORE we buy Ipads for teachers, we need to be looking at what we can get for the kids to better their education. And 3, we need to raise the bar, set higher goals than the minimum. And why was Knox not selected for the State's New Online Tutoring Program, when many neighboring schools were? For, I want my kids(& all Knox kids) to get the best education possible, but all I hear is that by moving 20-30 min in any direction would help. As I've researched, our High Schoolers are deprived from the same, broader Dual Credit System that neighboring schools have. We need to make the schools priority #1, & not the jail & cops, for they all seem to be driving brand new SUV's, cop trucks, & Chargers, so we're tired of hearing about their crisis's.
What do you think teachers are doing with the IPads? They are using them in combination with other technology to enhance classroom learning. You insinuate that teachers received this technology for their own personal use, rather than for educational purposes. That is an unfair accusation.
If you are unhappy about your child's educational progress, you need to be having a conversation with your child's teacher. You should be open to hearing an honest assessment of your child's abilities, but your child's teacher should also be open to hearing your suggestions for providing additional educational opportunities for your child.
You would probably get more positive results from approaching people who can actually make changes (such as your school administrators, teachers, and school board members) than you will from criticizing our schools on the WKVI message board.
conversations with teachers ????? HA ! my wife and i have called and left multiple voicemails for one of our childs teachers and the last ive heard/seen we have not heard from them (its been a couple weeks now). maybe they should be more concerned over thier struggling students instead of dropping thier ipads ! besides didnt we get letters a few years back over the school system being sub standard or something because of ISTEP scores ?
Interesting.....Knock the teachers and the school system for the failures of the students.
Not being in the "Babysitting" position myself...(Yes,believe it or not that is how I perceive the job of teaching.) one could say that if 10% of the parents who have those disruptive "Students" who "Do what they want"...would make sure "Junior" or Princess" would see the light.
Come on! I can't believe the "Blame Game" goes on in this County...I have to believe that this "Attitude" has been handed down generation to generation.
My reason for this reasoning? I had the opportunity of seeing....and hearing ...the same lame brained excuses...in the Public School system in Chicago.....
I would like to recongnize and say a big thank you to all the emergency personal that worked throughout the night of Monday Sept 20th when a woman crashed her car into a telephone pole in front of the hospital. That couldn't have been easy.
I would also like to thank the crew from NIPSCO, who worked not only throughout the night, but stayed on the scene working into the next day, working hard to restore power to the citizens in Starke County. Their dedication is astonishing! Prayers are going out to the victim and the families involved.
I would also like to thank the police departments for thier efforts to keep us all safe, when during the same time, a situation arose involving a man and a gun. Thank God we have all these dedicated professionals. Thank you everyone, you did a great job!
Hmmmmmmmm Vollyball..Knox Vs Jimtown..at home JV 5:00...Varsity follows after warm ups...More than likely at about 6:30...
How many will be attending to watch a JV Team that is "Undefeated" and a Varsity that is virtually unstopable..and once again on the road to a "Great Season"....
I cringe at seeing the small group of individuals who attend this exciting sport!
How about you "New" WKVI Disc changers !!!!!
With the power failure lastnight I think this is a big wake up call for WKVI! If their backup generators fail in both the station and the tower imagine if there was a real natural disaster and there was no way to get emergency information to the public. In all seriousness WKVI should consider purchasing updated generators that way the public has some information on what is going on. Let's get it together now!!
Yeah, it's great that teachers get Ipads, but shouldn't the kids come first? I have also spoke with some kids that say they don't like the new 45 minute class period in the Middle School, for it's not allowing enough class time to learn the day's lesson and work on it. I also would like to see that Knox students get every opportunity that every other school offers, but don't take away from the fact that Knox is doing alot of great things.
I heard something about that accident last night and wondered if anyone else had heard it too? Is it true that there actually was a fire and that a local man actually pulled the woman from her vehicle before first reponders even arrived? If that's true, which I believe it to be, as I heard it several times this morning, why is that man not mentioned? If he saved her life, he deserved some praise for being part of the rescue effort and putting his own life in danger in a selfless attempt to save another's. I heard the guy was behind her driving a red car? Like I said, I've heard it quite a few times this morning, and wondered if anyone heard this too, or knew the guy's name?
how about giving the county workers a true voice in the work place! They need a UNION! It is crazy that people who work hard in our community have to suffer from the greed of the "factory owners."Lets wake up people! Only being united in the work place will make changes! There is a saying "united we bargain, divided we beg" Lets wake up and push back!
WKVI - I love that you guys keep your website updated with the news every day, I really do! I just wish that the layout was easier to navigate and easier to share news stories on Facebook and other such sites. When the actual news story is a big image file, it's hard to post that on Facebook! I would highly consider simplifying the site and making it all text - Just a friendly suggestion from a life-long listener! Thanks!
There were at least two civilians at the accident scene last night and while it's true that there was fire it was the transformers blowing after the pole was hit. Both of these individuals assisted this victim and one even went so far as to go to the ambulance bay to let them know there was an accident, then returned to the scene to assist further. Both of these individuals need to be recognized because without them who knows what would have happened. The one who went to the ambulance bay had tried to call 911 and was unable to get through they got a busy signal. Makes you wonder, if 911 goes down when the power goes out how safe are we truly.
Complete rubbish. The driver of the car was still in the vehicle when emergency crews arrived on scene. It's really amazing the rumors that follow these types of things. If you didn't see it, keep your flaps shut.
To the gentleman who says he cannot get a response from a teacher, I would offer this suggestion. There is a chain of command that should be followed within the school corporation, and you will get results by following it.
First, contact the teacher. If, as you say, you are not successful in resolving the issue that way, you should contact the principal or assistant principal next. If that does not bring you satisfaction, your next step is to contact the superintendent, followed by the school board. You should allow two days between these contacts, because if you call the teacher and the principal on the same day, you will be seen as unreasonable and argumentative.
The ipads are not for the teachers. They are for the students. They will be available for teachers to check out for a couple of days at a time so that STUDENTS can use them. Teachers will basically not use them at all...other than to be familiar with them so they can help the students use them for educational purposes. Are we really going to complain about our students getting exposed to learning tools that they will enjoy and still learn from?
I contacted 4 teachers to get the missed work for my child when they missed due to medical issues, and only 1 of the 4 ever contacted me back. And I've heard from many kids that the 45 minute class is too short as well, saying that the lesson is rushed.
To the person who posted completely rubbish what don't you understand about two individuals assisted this victim. I happen to know one of the two individuals who actually packaged the items from the scene for transport, unlike the one fireman who is taking credit for packaging everything on the scene that needed to be packaged, when in fact he didn't, this is par for the course when it comes to the incompetence that follows some, not all of the people in our emergency response crews. As I say this understand that I have dealt with and know many volunteer firemen in this county and for the most part they are good men who give up everything when that tone goes off. For those who are saying completely rubbish maybe you should realize that most people are onto the incompetent ones and they just take you for what you are, not worth listening to. Trying to call others liars is par for the course with you maybe if you actually did all that you say you do people would listen to you.
In regards to what is being built west of the truck stop on 30....
it's a saloon!!! It's going to be awesome, but the only thing is you have to ride your horse down there from the rodeo. Giddy up,,what a great idea!!!
As a student of knox high school i was wondering how come we dont get ipads, laptops, and all these fancy thimgs? Od has them! Plymouth has them! Ad alot of other schools have them! If we had laptops we could have our textbooks and evreything online. Even take test, quizes, etc on them. Also what about this art teacher? She seems that she has no clue what shes doing!
Note to Congress,
Do NOT increase the taxes on anyone. Let the rich keep their money, because they run the businesses that HIRE people. The rich want to make more money and they need their businesses to make profits, which meens more JOBS for us. Don't take their money and throw it into the black hole of the federal government.
I think the response to rubbish is in regards to the person who said that a person pulled the victim out of the car before emergency personnel got to the scene. That is the part that isn't true.
I never said the person was pulled out I said that at least one passer-by assisted by getting help and helping to pack up the items on the scene that needed packed up. The woman had a pole on her car anyone in their right mind would not try to remove the victim with the pole as it was. However, the fact that the emergency personnel were assisted by the passer-by (I only know of one for sure, the second could just be talking)is true. The fact that 911 wasn't working is troubling. As I said I know and deal with a lot of volunteer firemen, and for the most part they are great people, however as with anything you have a few bad apples that make all look bad. Everyone who took part in assisting this victim deserves to have our thanks as a community, to try to say that only emergency personnel took part in this situation is a flat out lie and the person who cannot give credit where credit is due needs to understand that, it takes a lot for a civilian to help out in this type of situation.
tax increase for the ones in starke county who are working.
i would like hear from the other 9 of us that are still working, and see if they want a tax increase, i sure dont
I was referring to the anonymous Sept. 21,10:04 who stated that a civilian pulled the victim out of the car. I agree that the civilian who helped pack up things deserves credit for his kind act. There are always going to be the bad apples who tarnish the reputation of the good ones. Lets just hope that most of us remember there are more good than bad.
to the person who said 'Let the rich keep their money' That is why so many working people in this country are working in poverity because the rich are not being taxed. Why tax working people more? The rich keep getting richer and the poor are getting more poor. Wake up!
Kudos to the student asking about all the issues of Ipads. Yes, nearly all the neighboring schools have laptops. I think our kids are short-changed in many aspects academically. Why doesn't someone from our School Board contact the other schools & see how they are ale manage this, so tha Knox may take a positive sep forward.
lets see here we go the council just gave a 3% raise well that must be to help the employees pay for the tax increase that they are planning kudos to the 2 that voted against it this is total BS I hope everyone else dosent forget this I know that I will not!!!!
Thank you Mr.Lee Nagai. Finally someone has PUBLICLY brought to the attention of the Starke County Commissioners the condition of the county roads caused by the illegal truck traffic detour of US 35.
Just gotta know. Is that sexy voiced man I hear in the mornings
married? If not how do I meet
him? Sounds like he'd be s fun
date. Tom Berg, I'm listening.
The dangers of the truck traffic on the county roads and just the increased traffic in general is ridiculous! The corn, tall weeds and trees along the roads make it hard enough to see if someone is coming...but to add to that situation cars and semis doing 65 mph or more just makes it deadly! I saw in the police reports where one of our customers was hit pulling off of 200 N onto 600 E due to inability to see oncoming traffic. I've had some very close calls myself but see the corn fields on 250 N and 600 E have been picked...we can SEE AGAIN! Now if we could just see around the trees when we try to pull out onto 700 East we would have it made. I can't wait for 35 to be open again. I still don't understand why it is taking so long to replace a culvert, but apparently this was a BIG job.
Has anyone remembered a post on Aug.25, when it was stated the county employees were getting a 3% pay increase? And another on Aug.26 where someone asked where info was coming from because budget meetings were not going to be held until Sept.? asking if person of Aug. 25 knew something no one else knew. Well either our elected officials illegally met prior to Aug.25 and decided the pay issue or the person who posted the Aug.25 comments can predict future events and therefore our elected officials should find out who predicted this pay increase fully a month before it was passed in bubget meeting.this week and have them give you the lotto numbers which will help pay cost of raise.
Ken. Arnet
The condition of the county roads is just as bad as the pig odor coming from Mr Nagai's CAFO's. I do not see anybody doing anything about that either.
There is way to much bickering on here.
Does the news ever change around here? And I would file your statements downstate about the raise, because I also have the 3% Raise comment saved, & being that it was just passed, that is back door meetings, which is illegal, & is actually nothing new for County Commissioners, for Kevin Kroft & the gang were pretty good at it. Kroft actually funnelled other County Office's budget through the Highway Garage, that had NO relation to that dept., and had people asking how he could do that.
This is soooo exciting....I heard from an out of town contractor that they are building a casino/restaurant where Sysco was going to be. What a wonderful idea!! Cha-ching!!
TODAY...IS THE...ONLY SAY POSITIVE COMMENTS DAY! What a great harvest the farmers look to have. What a great summer it was. I'm certain great blessings are coming to Starke Co. I'm so grateful for all our public volunteers, may your lives be overly blessed for it. I love all the wonderful people, honest leaders and cordial police officers. Yes, some may not be quite as 100% as we desire, but we will speak it through Faith, for it is that very Faith that I MUST lean on to make myself a better person. May everyone have a blessed & joyful Homecoming Weekend, in Jesus Name, Amen.
What Lee Nagi is complaining about truck traffic ??? He has alot of room to start anything around Starke County and besides is he not a farmer ? How does he plan on getting to the Hamlet Elevator with grain this year for farmers South of Knox if we can not drive our semis and grain trucks on the county roads without taking the detour that will add alot of time and miles to take a load of grain in. Remember what they have been saying on the WKVI -Have you thanked a farmer today. Without them you would not have alot of things that you do today. What about Toto Rd. and all the semis hauling dirt all day long . I believe we all pay taxes and should have the right to our own roads . Rather there is truck traffic or not alot of our county roads are in bad shape has nothing to do with semis being on them . After all you dsitrbute the weight of them over 18 wheels and you dont get the torn up roads as you are thinking. I agree some need to slow down but also I have seen my share of plan pick ups and cars speeding down these same back roads so you just need to take a little bit more time and watch for all the traffic. You think with all the stir he caused with his stinky pig issue that he would keep his mouth closed who does he think he is anyhow ? Oh thats right he is the TROUBLE maker for alot of people.
North Judson school is very fortunate to have Lynn Johnson as their new superintendent. She is doing a great job. We are blessed to have her and our great school board members.
WHAT???!! Where in the heck did that idea of a casino/restaurant come from? Oh great, like Starke Co. residents can afford to gamble. Are they going to go & legalize prostitution too? That'll really help our image that we've worked so hard to improve. Heck, let's just start making moonshine again. And why not the pharmeceutical marajuana empire as well, since it still grows wild all over the county. POINT BEING....WE DO NOT NEED A CASINO IN STARKE CO. I'd rather see a corn field, an old junk yard...anything but a casino. Mr. Weaver...can you give everyone in Starke Co. a TRUTHFUL status update on Sysco. We appreciate your efforts, but would like the truth. AND....Farmers can drive on any road they desire. This country was built on farming, and they pay their taxes. How much longer will 35 be closed anyway?
I am not a supporter of Lee Nagai, but I do not believe he is necessarily referring to the grain trucks on the county roads. We have seen many semis that are totally unrelated to farming barreling down the roads...Fed Ex, etc. due to the detour with 35 being closed. The other traffic is also significantly increased so it has become rather dangerous with the intersections being blocked by corn stalks, weeds, etc. People all need to slow down...this is why I believe he was seeking some help from the county to start enforcing the speed limits, etc.
Okay, if people don't want "stinky pigs" around, how do you propose that we get pork to eat??????? And I would like to thank all the farmers in our area!!!
I laughed hysterically when I read the casino/restaurant post. I do not see that happening here.
Having read the article by Mr. Hayes with County Council President Mark Smith, I sympathize with you and any elected official in these tough economic times. One thing our elected officials can do is educate their constituents on the harm that every community is feeling from the new property tax legislation and ask them to vote "NO" this November when tax caps are on the ballot to be placed into the State Constitution. We need more time to study this. Our Governor will be out of office when the s__t hits the fan, and communities like yours will be broke and once they're in the constitution there's no turning back.
WhoooooHoooooooo!!!!!! Great Game REDSKINS!!!!!! We should have you a parade every Friday, cause tonight you were Bad to the Bone! Keep it goin young men, we're very proud of you all! Great HomeComing Game, and glad to see some old faces, as the stands were packed! The line did a great job on both sides of the ball, awesome gang-tackling, great speed off those killer blocks, very good special teams, just a great fundamentals, start to finish. Now let's get ready for next week!
A casino in Starke County, what a really bad idea. It's a shame that people want one. Our county is so poor. I know lots of people take their children to the casino in Michigan, let them spend their time else where while their parents gamble. Not a good influence for children. I went with a friend one time and I can tell you I didn't spend any money there as I saw people on social security waste their money gambling. And as most people of that age now know you don't get a lot in social security money. Starke county wise up- If that comes to past about a casino I hope everyone will be smart enough to stop it. Spend you your money on what counts the most, feeding your family, paying your bills, and keeping your home together. God Bless our county.
One question for you Mr Ted.
Why can't the current temperature be given each morning after your newscast and the canned weather report?
Parents need to know how to dress their kids for school.
Please
Stop the article about a Casino in Starke County.
I can not believe any one would fall for the JOKE I put on here.
I was just trying to change the conversation.
I can not believe people would believe this.
Folks you have to have a populated area to put something like that UP.
LIGHTEN UP AND PLEASE DON'T SPREAD THE WORD THAT WE ARE GETTING A CASINO IN STARKE COUNTY.
Have a GREAT DAY.
Anybody know what all the sirens were near Hamlet in the middle of the night? Three weeks ago, it was a house fire. Last night sounded like a repeat performance but I see nothing on any news sites about anything happening near here.
cisco is casino with some different letters is all.
both a joke i think.
Glenn Beck acknowledges he used to be a real jerk (about 7-8 years ago as you put it), until he had a religious conversion. That's part of his point. DUH. You basically supported his stance 'Anonymous'. Maybe YOU should find something better to do than complain (non-sensically at that) yourself since you're so worried about complaining. I'm not, but make sense at least.
WKVI.com is nice to have, but the layout is substandard honestly.
You don't make one effort at something and then so 'Oh well, I tried, now it's their fault'. If you don't make sure it's taken care of, and you don't quit until it is and it affects you or your family, it's all on your shoulders.
Anyone notice certain candidates can't hardly find anyone to put signs in their yards and only put them at vacant farmland and corners? That is trespassing if they did not permission from the owner. Not sure where people think that is 'community property'. This is America if you forgot. We still have property rights - sort of anyway. You have to get permission to put signs up on personal property. Pretty simple.
Also I saw a vandalized political sign out at what I think is Nagai property maybe (not sure) on the detour. Who has to vandalize a sign?? LOSERS, and sore losers at that, that's who.
Wow. Venting today I guess. Perhaps more uplifting thoughts anohter time...
the post that someone is trying to take credit for the casino/restaurant, you are not the one that posted it as a joke.
I really did hear that & don't appreciate you trying to make it out to be a joke. I'm just saying that is what I heard....
That would probably bring more jobs & revenue to Starke Co than Sysco anyway,,,so you never know.
IN RESPONSE..........What Lee Nagi is complaining about truck traffic ???
YES & I THANK HIM! Not for his pig farm but for complaining to someone who can do something about the Illegal trucking on county roads. These roads are posted with no truck signs, you know, the ones with a picture of a truck & over that a large circle with a slanted line over it? NO one is talking about farm trucks. We're talking about commercial trucks carrying loads rated for state highway load limits which are more than county road load limits. Interstate truck traffic is using county roads & Starke County taxpayers are going to have to pay for the damage to the roads. Surely, anyone blessed with even minimal intelligence can understand this reasoning. If he is not a farmer why would he have grain going to the elevator? What does owning a pig farm have to do with commercial truck traffic on county roads? Are you trying to say that no matter how much weight a truck is hauling, if it is spread out over 18 wheels it will not hurt the roads? COME ON, use a little common sense!!! I don't like the smell of his pig farm either but it doesn't mean he isn't right about other things. BUT...... I do like pork.

"You sympathize with any elected officials" ??????? They spend large sums of money for the privilege of running for office or accepting appointed positions so they can make these decisions. Everyone is not going to agree that their decisions are correct. They will not always get what they think is best. Get use to it. If they are so easily discouraged & can't take the criticism that comes with the job.... why apply for the position?

I saw the same vandalized political sign. Last week someone vandalized another sign & the mail box next to it along the road by the same field.

I haven't seen any postings about the jail in a while so I will start it up again! Did anyone read the Letters to the Editor in the Leader? Seriously! How sad that a person can compare the condition of several jails! Once again, if you don't like it, stay out! Nobody is making you go there. It's by your own unintelligent decisions that you get to experience what happens in a jail. Quit complaining, it's jail. You could be in shackles and chains and thrown in a dungeon somewhere. You sound like a spoiled brat. WA WA WA! If you keep doing what you have been doing, you'll keep getting what you've been getting.
I would like to thank everyone who came out Friday night to support the Knox Redskins, for once this year the bleachers were full of fans cheering these players on.
Yes, that was a great game by our Knox Redskins. And not just the fact that the stands were full, but it seemed that for most of the 4th quarter everyone was standing, screaming, cheering...VERY FIRED UP, and it was great. So guys, it's not how you start a season, but how you finish. So keep building on these wins, keep increasing that intensity, and I think you may have found lightning in a bottle.
Isaiah... Do you realize that most farmers today have 18 wheelers hauling grain from there fields to the elevator ? They are commercial trucks not your typical old farm grain trucks so yes he is talking about farmers .
Also does he fail to realize most these semi commercial trucks that have been on 300 E are only going to the factories that most the people in this area get income from?
And if our roads were kept up like they should be the weight of these trucks would not affect them. But our county unfortunately does not have all the funding's to do this so therefor they are and were and will be in bad shape.
Semis are on our county roads every day of the week it is just a fact of life they need to be rather it be delivering or just going to there place of residency . I am sure Lee has commercial trucks come to his home rather it be for fuel delivery, feed, or other things he may be getting that can not be hauled with your basic 4 wheel vehicle . It is just part of life these semis are all over .....
The Knox pop warner Tiny Mites had their homecoming day Saturday, it was a joy to see these little guys and cheerleaders so full of excitement and engery. The parents were introduced with their son or daughter. The tiny mights won with 2-0. Each player and cheerleader had a sign hung on the fence as you went into the field. it was fun to see them all. Good job to the tine mites, future football Stars!! Why doesn't WKVI show some of them or do a story on the website for them?
To the early morning announcer, this morning I heard him saying that he would like to take a gaint pumpkin and throw it off the building, he stated he has some in favor of doing this. What a stupid idea, why waste a pumkin. We complain when we get pranked with the kids smashing pumpkins, now you want to throw one off a building. How old are you? I'm sure you will probably have some for this but I hope you have enough against it, to not let it happen. Please reconsider doing this. We have enough problems in the county. Grow up!!
To the early morning host that is TOMB BERG!! I think you are doing great and I think the Idea is also great! How many pumpkins go to waste anyway? These large pumpkins are just that "large" Nobody uses them for anything but to look at in awe! I think some would be left in awe to see how this thing would splatter! I would suggest a whole day fundraiser with vendors and such with the grand finale of the day around 4:00 with the 1,000 lb pumpkin SPLATTER!!! Much more useful and exciting than to let it sit on the porch and rot. LOL run with it Tom!!
I agree Tom Berg is the best thing that has happened to WKVI in a long time I enjoy the station broadcasting all day long now with the team they have . It is wonderful to hear someone talk of all sorts of things rather then just music , ads and such... Keep up the hard work that you have been doing since taking your position... think alot in Knox would have to agree you are a great broadcaster making the days go by faster.... And it is just a pumpkin that most are wasted anyways or left to rot until spring in many yards...
Cool. You should throw the pumpkin from the top of the court house, & then maybe some other fruits & veggies, i.e. David Letterman. But....why is nobody updating the website? The news hasn't changed in over 10 days, & you were formerly updating the police blotter weekly, but for the last month or so, nothing new has been edited.
I would like to see the pumpkin splattered, but wouldn't want the job of cleaning up the mess!!!
I love NJSP BlueJay Cheerleading(:
I was thinking I could hollow out the large pumpkin and Tom Berg could crawl inside and then I can drop it from the crane!!!! We could fill it with Jello, how many gallons would that be?
To the blogger who asked about why the website wasn't updated: I'm not sure what's going on, but I check the website and discussion board several times each day and I find that it's being updated daily. I just checked again, before writing, to be sure and it's current as of now.
